Subject: off the road Question: Hi, Im considering taking the car off the road for a minimum of 12 months. Im not able to use it much at the moment but i dont want to sell it. The car will be garaged and obviously covered over but is there anything else you would recommend doing to the car or engine to protect it while its not being used. Cheers, Dave Answer: keep the handbrake off for gods sake! make sure the coolant has plenty of antifreeze/anticorrosion in it. thats about it. probably best to put fresh oil in it too, as the old oil apparently has acidic properties....better safe than sorry. |

Subject: fuel Question: hello mark......can you help me out on a question............i think the car is running too much fuel.......cuz im using about 20 quid a week going 75 to 90 miles......is this normal as im going to have to start getting shares in Esso.......the car has been upgraded to a bigger turbo, as you know.............also i was driving it to work and i was approaching an island so i pushed on the cluch and the revs went really low, so low that the car cuts out, but obviously starts again as soon as i accelerate........why is this? Answer: clean out yer idle jet. check yer rotor, cap etc etc. sounds like you are running a little rich..... mine does about 20miles to the gallon....if im lucky. |

Subject: Wheel vibration. Question: Hello Mr W, I have searched your pages for some resolution but to no avail. My problem is this: - Approaching 70mph I get wheel wobble. I haqve recently changed wheels, 15's with a 35mm offset. I have recently changed the bearing on the offside but did not torque it to spec. I checked the wheels again last night and found a small amount of play again in the offside wheel when pulling and pushing at the top of the wheel. 1. Is a 35mm offset ok? 2. Would a worn lower ball joint show this play? 3.How do you check to see if there is play in the lower ball joint and lower wishbone bushes? Thanks a million. Andy. Answer: wobble the wheel and have a look at the bushes and joints in question. alot harder than it might seem. but, have you considered that the problem might be that the rubber bush in the suspension top has worn, and that the top hat inside the susp top has cracked? you can test this, by jacking the front wheel up.taking off the balck cover on the shock tower...and with the tips of yer toes, rock back, and push the wheel upwards. if the centre nut on the shock, moves up and down, you got play in the susp top. ;-) |

Subject: Starter Motor Question: I had a problem with my starter motor being totally dead. I replaced it myself with a new starter (not easy) and it starts first time and everything. However after a long drive and then switching the engine off. If you go to turn the key there is nothing apart from a relay click. I left for a minute then tried again and it burst into life first time. The symptoms are identical to the problem I had which caused me to change the first starter motor apart from that one never restarted. Can you help? Answer: this is why reanult developed a starter motor heat shield. if you gotta bigger downpipe, then the heat is even closer to the starter motor than reno intended...... also.....if you gotta leaky rocker gasket, the oil runs thru the manifolds, straight onto the starter....thus causing a sticky, mess to form, on and inside the motor! could also be due to you shady mechanics, not fitting the main live wires to the starter motor properly ;-) take em off, clean em with sand paper, and stick em back on.... usually does the trick *lol* |

Subject: Smoking at idle Question: I have recently installed a rebuilt engine from Prima and have covered 1500 miles so far. The engine is running fine however i'm getting a lot of smoke on idle and when i pull away. When i put the turbo on i twisted the turbine housing slightly and now it is smoking a little bit out of the turbocharger, could it be that the turbo is drawing in air through the same hole its smoking out of and thats why its smoking a lot? The car just past its mot and apparently has quite low emmisions, although it smokes! There is some play in the shaft and i don't know the full history of the turbocharger. Do i need a new one? Answer: perhaps. does it smoke alot on over-run? if so, then yer seals have gone on the turbo. dunno why this should happen on such a new turbo, unless you got other engine faults.....or a dodgy turbo.... check to see the turbo elbow aint covered in oil, internally....this is usually a good sign the seals have gone. |

Subject: squashy top hose Question: when i rev the car from under the bonnet, my rad top hose squeezes together?? Are there any potential problems with this? or is it normal? also ive got an oil leak, it gathers on the top of my gearbox, it is engine oil and there is no visible sign of leakage from any pipe work? where could it be comnig from? cheers wiz Answer: can be normal, depends whether you're running a thermstat or not. oil leak ontop of gearbox, are one of two things..... oil from bottom feed of turbo, or oil from pipe that goes to rad cooler. where the metal pipe joints onto the rubber hose... |

Subject: what boost and what to expect and what next Question: hi wizz my engine has been rebulit with all bb parts with 265 cam and flowed head and manifolds also got me a chargecooler piper x air filter and standard turbo so what is a safe boost to run for now without much hassle and what kinda bhp should i be expected to hit. also what turbo will be able to take me 200 bhp as this is my aim also what other mods should i do to get to that mark. thank u Answer: wouldnt advise running over 15psi, as you'll knacker the turbo quick-time! you'd probably get around 150-170bhp mark. you'd need a t25 turbo at least, or a t3, to get 200bhp, and around 22psi boost. |

Subject: Loss of Boost Question: Could you please tell me what hoses carry boost pressure? I have very little boost output and am getting a hissing noise whenever the turbo kicks in. Answer: startign from the intercooler, you'll see two hoses that carry boost, one from the turbo, one going to the carburettor top. if you look at haynes manual, it does actually show you what hoses carry boost etc etc..... but i'll carry on anyway... most pipes tend to split where they join the turbo, by the jubilee clip. just check all the pipework for splits... what more can i say? |

Subject: Perc Fan Solenoid Question: Hi, I have just connected my perc fan up and had ago with the solenoid as well. The solenoid had one wire coming from near the alternater somewhere so i left that and connected the other wire (which was cut) to the negative side of one of the perc sensors. Now when the fan comes on the solenoid opens. Is this correct? I have a feeling that when the car is boosting i am lossing pressure through the solenoid, is the solenoid supposed to prevent this electrically or mechanically? How does the solenoid work? Answer: i was under the impression that the solenoid only opened when the car was off, i.e when the solenoid see's a voltage its shut. this allows the perc fan to blow cool air into the boost hoses and purge any warm and oily gases, hence making it easier to start. |

Subject: starter motor/2 Question: hi there you asked me if my starter motor was sticking or if my perc fan worked..well the starter motor does stick a bit but my perc fan dont work at all..can you help me out now.... Answer: yeah, you've actually 'forgot' to mention any symptoms of your problem. 1)if your car just clicks at you when you try and start it , then starter motor is sticking. 2)if it doesnt click and the starter still doesn't turn, the solenoid on the starter is screwed, or the connections to it are loose/fallen off. 3)if it does turn over but won't start, then its more than likely that your fuel has got hot in the carb and vapourised. this is why you need the antiperc fan. (or bridge the fuel pump relay, so that the pump comes on when your key is in the 'on' postion in the ignition, its a little dodgy, but it means you can put fresh cool fuel into the float chamber of the carb, before you start it... ) |

Answer: on overrun and idle the engine is 'on vacuum' only place really it can be sucking water from is the head gasket. i advise to do a compression check to see if one or more of the cylinders is 'leaky'. |

Subject: flat spot Question: when i accelerate my car holds back before going? even if i rev it standing still the revs drop initially and then it revs up? i've give it a good service, ran a can of carb cleaner thru it and adjusted the valve clearances but it still does it? could it be my accelerator pump? cheers Answer: bingo!, flip me, we have another candidate for wizard folks! you are CORRECT! unscrew the 4 bolts that hold the accelerator pump on to the carb, check to see if the thing still moves, as they always stick! might be time to get a carb kit and change the gaskets.... by movement i mean that the 'rocker' part of the pump should move when you press the accelerator.... |

Subject: need input Question: Hello mate could you please tell me ex actly how to do the cup mod and what does it do. cheers Answer: easier if you find alex's web site as the pix are there. basically involves removing the metal pipe from the back of the turbo, and the pipe where it joins the carb top, and also the pipe where it joins the actuator...i.e one whole long length. block up the turbo elbow hole, and the carb top hole and leave the actuator port open to air. you should still have one actuator port connected to a pipe. if you aint, you've fecked up! supposed to aid spool up time on the turbo. |

Subject: How to Adjust Boost Question: Hey wiz, im quite new at this turbo business and i want to turn the bosst down on my turbo cos its running a bit too high at the mo. How do u do it?? cheers Answer: look at the turbo actuator. where it connects to an 'arm' poking out of the turbo- exhaust side, pop it off there. then unscrew the end of the actuator 3 turns, and pop back on wastgate 'arm'. take it for a run, and see what happens. if you haven't adjusted it enuff, just wind the actuator arm so it becomes LONGER....this reduces the boost. |

Subject: cutting out Question: hi i have fitted gas suspension to my car and ever since i have fitted it when i put my foot down a bit and i am going over a bumpy surface the car just cuts dead on me and sometimes kicks back in and i get a very strang smell coming form the exaust any idears thanks Answer: check your ignition leads. as the car now has a harder ride, the engine and all components will suffer extra vibration. also check your timing sensor wire, and +ve feed to the ecu, and earth connections from the battery to the bodywork. |
