Subject: grp a carb Question: alright mate just bought all the bits for a full rebuild which is taking place very soon also got a hydbrid turbo t25, stage2 cam filter , pipe, lighten flywheel and crank would a grpa carb be a wise buy or just overhaul a normal carb with different jets is a grpa carb worththe money Answer: grp a aint really worth the money unless you planning on running over 25 psi. + the enlarged venturi really screws up the carb's ability to fuel correctly across the whole rev range... |

Subject: Vaccum Possibility Part II Question: Wiz Further to my previous question. The garage have got my 5 running again. Apparently my carb was not fitted to the manifold properly?!?!?! Picked her up Friday and did about 70 miles absolutely no problems, it was flying along the dual carriageways & the old feelings were soon returning!! However Saturday morning when I went to the shop, I switched the ignition on & the revometer bounced to 7000RPM, back to 0RPM and back again. It would twitch a bit when I turned the lights or radio on as well. I went to the shops & the old problems returned. It seems OK now, but I just dont trust it anymore!! Any ideas on what to check, and why would my revvy counter do that?!?!? Sorry it's a bit long & thank you! Tud. Answer: try cleaning the rev counter feed from the ecu. as show by haynes... failing that the stock answer is: CHECK/CLEAN YOUR EARTHS! *LOL* |

Subject: volvo clutch Question: is there any chance you could give me the catalogue numbers of N group clutch for r5gtt( I suppose it is volvo's 480 turbo Valeo's clutch). Subject: rear axle Question: hi, is the standard 5 rear axle the same as a turbo? I took my car for lowering and it couldnt be done(thats 3 attempts now) the bloke at the garage said to get another rear axle and free it off and then replace it, it wont be much work to change he said, could this be done with a standard rear axle or would i need one from a turbo?? thanks, stef Answer: the standard rear axle is not the same as a gt turbo one. i think there are more torsion bars on the gtturbo, and i think they are thicker too... you could lower it another way..... the whole trailing arm is bolted to the car via 4 bolts. undo the bolts, lower the whole rear assembly away from the car. then fit washers onto the front two sets of bolts and re attach the trailing arm.....this in effect throws the whole arm at an angle, throwing the rear wheels up into the arch.....sounds dodgy.....but it works ;-) |

Subject: rear axle/trailing arm Question: hi, i asked you about changing the rear axle for one an a standard 5 because i couldnt free off the torsion bars, you said to fit washers to the front set of bolts on the trailing arm, how many sets of washers could i put on them because i want the rear lowering around 60mm, would this be safe? thanks, stef Answer: well, to be perfectly honest, i aint got a clue. trial and error i think is the key. as for how safe it is..... well some people would definatley NOT do it, but i suggested it, as you are in a desperate situation. i seen two cars run around for a at least a year each, and they never had any problems. |

Subject: Crackin Question: Howz it goin' Wiz? What do you think of this.Sudden lose of power and boost pressure dropped.Adjusted actuator to bring boost back up.Boost pressure went back up but power did'nt.Removed Turbo took of exh. elbow to look at wastegate and found 3 cracks on the face that the gate sits on.One goes right into the exh. turbine and further. The other 2 run into the exh. outlet. Could this be cause of power loss???.Sorry for the short story... Answer: could well be. but, i am assuming that you have checked the intercooler and boost pipework first.... cos that's what it sounds more likely to be , to me. |

Subject: Coolant boiling :( Question: Hi, When i bought my car it had some crap in the header tank, not mayo, not oil. A few days later the turbo coolant feed split at the clip where it had perished inside. So i assumed This was the cause of the murky coolant, and replaced the pipe. Since then i seem to get the header tank boiling over, with the same murky coloured coolant which leaves a sandy coloured dust when dry. I flushed the rad and coolant pipes until i had clear water running through, cleaned up the header tank, and topped up the sytem. OK for one day, now back to square one The car isn't over heating according to the dash hits 1/3 max then the fan kicks in. Help!Answer: take the cap off the expansion bottle and start the car. does the coolant bubble out of the exp bottle?- if so, you need a new Headgasket. if it doesn't you may need a new expansion bottle cap, as these have pressure release valves in them.....yours may well be stuck with that 'sandy coloured water' - i.e rusty water from the block... |

Subject: volvo conversion Question: now then wiz i am asking you this because i couldnt get that 1.7 conversion to work so ive had another idea could i fit the pistons into a gtx block the head off the volvo an r5gtt inlet manifold (does the inlet manifold fit the 1.7?) and carb so i could do away with all the electrics off the volvo and just use the simple r5 gtx loom also if i fit rear discs to the 5 gtx can i just replace the stub axle ar do i need to get a full turbo rear axle? thanks wiz ben Answer: sounds like alot of work to me. you REALLY need to have a look at the VOLVO 480 turbo forums, to see whether you really are going in the correct direction. they have trouble getting over 200 bhp, unless they spend ALOT of money. |
