Subject: air corrector 1.00 Question: my cars fairly standard part from exhaust & slight boost increase, but is very heavy on fuel even when driven carefully! if i was to change the air corrector in my carb to a 1.00mm do u think this might help?? any other ideas would be very greatfull thanks alot wiz!!!!!!!!!! Answer: changing the air corrector from the standard 125 to a 100 will make the economy much worse. are you leaking any from the tank? have you got a split in the petrol feed to the carb?- is it over flowing from the float chamber out the side of the carb? so many questions! ;-) |

Subject: boost Question: i have a alloy inter cooler, t25 hybrid and d/valve. What do i need to run 14psi EG. head gasket and other bits Cheers Ash T Answer: 14psi...you can actually run this on a standard carb set up. but its probably better to enlarge the main jet slightly to a 130. you can leave everything else - it'll take it :-) |

Subject: pads Question: Wizard..... Answer me this from ure knowledge..o great one.. Is it rear or front brakes that do the most work??? As i was told to keep the rear standard and upgrade the front to ebc groove discs and greenstuff pads.....but the rear seem to have worn quicker and the front hardley used??????????????? Can i make the front more effective i.e grip the discs more 4 more stopping power........... I was told fronts do 70% and rear 30% PLease advise................. Answer: i heard it was 70% front 30% rear too. but if you have had the car lowered then this gets thrown out the window and you get all sorts of strange phenomena, unless you adjust the pressure regulator. you cannot make the pads grip the disc harder...unless you get REALLY expensive calipers..eg WILWOOD's!!! with more than one piston....OR!- you change the brake master cylinder for one off a larger/heavier renault...this should in theory, mean better braking....i think! |

Subject: is it me drive shaft Question: Where to begin Ummmm well me car has been in 4 new engine mounts and has also had a 50mm drop this was about 3-4 weeks ago any way since then when giving it some in 1st and 2nd gear there is a knocking and a vibe and it seems to be getting worse now the vibe is a deep loud hum and the knocking knocks more. If i wheel spin it really hates it and if drive calm there is nothing I know the work that has been done i.e Springs,Mounts is fine but when i was getting it done i was told a drive shaft had some play init. I know being lower the sarft has to work harder can the shaft not be up to it now????? Is it the shaft that needs replacing or somthing the shaft goes into? Or do you think its somthing else thats making the noise also if you replace one do you have to do the other if that is the prob heeeeeeeeeeeeellllllllllllllllllllllllppppppppppppppppp if its not one thing its another Answer: and wot drive shaft had play init if any play or leaks from the joints then its best to get a new shaft fitted |

Subject: OIL IN WATER, COOLING SYSTEM PRESSURISED Question: RIGHT WIZ.. MY CARS PLAYING ME UP A LOT. First off i replaced the head gasket about 2 weeks ago after getting the head skimmed, re-lapping the valve`s and fitting new valve stem oil seals. but now i have the problem of the cooling system being extremely over pressuried on the point of exploding and oil residue on the expansion bottle cap and oil visible on the surface of the water. the car will run really bad when it gets hot, so i think that the water is being forced into the carb somehow. Could the turbo be goosed and be mixing the oil and water and letting water into the carb through the turbo pipe?could the oil pressure be pressurising the cooling system? i`m pretty sure the head gasket is ok, there is no grey oil/water mix on the rocker cover.the problem gets worse when i put my foot down, if i drive like an old fart it`s ok. there is a bit of smoke too when i`m changing gear. it`s a standard turbo not the original one to the engine though.cheers wiz i`ve had a tit full of the shed! Answer: ive never herd of or seen a turbo put water into the intake but it is poss .. as for the oil pumping up the cooling sys you would get alot of oil in your cooling sys for it to do this and i mean alot wot i think is hapening is you have not diagnose the original prob that has caused the gask to go goty a feeling that it may well be lack of air passing through your radiator get a light behind it and look at all the dirt that has built up in the cooling vains jet wash all the dirt from the out side of the rad and also flush out the full cooling sys |

Subject: Reasons for this!!!!! Question: I am very very frustrated, hopefully by the time u get this the problem may be sorted, My Car will ONLY boost to 15psi, (ignore any pics on my profile), Boost circuit is, T3 Actuator (new 25psi rated), T25 Turbo, Cup Mod In car boost adj, , Boost Gauge, only boosting to 15Psi, will not go any higher, no overboost protector, no (known as yet) leaks, pretty sure it is not the wastgate as it is bang on 15psi all the time, intercooler fine pressure tested ok, my question is, what are ALL the reasons why the boost can`t be adjusted, why could it be limited, i had it at 25psi with electronic boost controller before my rebuild!!!!!!!!!!! Wiz u r the man if u can help!!!!! Chris Answer: put a restrictor in the pipe that goes to the actuator.- a main jet will do. this restricts the air flow to the actuator. try this first. |

Subject: Lowering car affecting braking Question: Hi I'm about reset / lower the torsion bar, and was wondering how this will affect the brakes and also how to adjust the brake bias valve if this is going to be needed as a result of lowering. If so is this something an average person can do? thanks in advance Answer: yes, your average one armed, siamesed twinned, wheelchair riding lesbian, deaf mute, could do this one.. of course if they didnt have a spanner they could probably do it with their bare teeth... just a matter off turning a nut...to adjust the length of the bar. i think when you lower it it makes the rear brakes work tooo much....so adjust accordingly..i.e look at how the rear arm moves when lowered and then fool the bar into thinking the car is at normal height. |

Subject: Vaccum Possibility Question: Dear Wiz After nearly 4 months, the old 5 is still not on the road!!! The symptoms are...running VERY poorly, spluttering, cutting off, loss of power, backfiring etc etc. Anyway, I have changed the Renix unit, the TDC lead, cleaned the pipes & carb out at a great cost. I lost count after about £350. So now, it's in a different garage and different diagnosis. They have told me that there may well be a problem with the vaccum pipe/dump valve in that too much air is being taken in, hence it running poorly. They as yet havent had an opportunity to look at it properly - so can you advise me what to do as this is testing me to the absolute maximum. Cheers Tud Answer: have you checked that the ignition timing is correct? get the mark on the flywheel to line up with 0° mark on the gearbox. undo sparkplugs 1 and 4 and check to see that the pistons are at the top of their strokes. then take the top of the distributor cap off. the rotor arm should be pointing towards the radiator...straight to the front of the car! if it aint you need to remove the distributor...then take out the drive gear from and follow Mr Haynes bible.... let me know about this mate! you may have to see if the cam and crank marks are actually facing each other too....but thats only if the carb is backfiring up through the carb top *lol*- a favourite trick of mine ;-) |

Subject: valve stem seals Question: Wiz, Would a dodgy valve stem seal show up on a comression test?? My mates car (honest!!) smokes quite a bit now and again and has been advised to change these as it may be the cause. We done a compression test and all cyls are roughly the same [11 bar]. Is it gong to be worth changing them anyway ?? Subject: Manuals Question: Wiz, There are a few differences in the Haynes manual and the original blue Renault handbook that came with the car. (dont have them to hand so I cant say exactly what the differences are) 1.The oil capacity in the blue hand book its apparently 2.something litres and the Haynes says 3.something. [I fill my car up with 3.7 and the dip reads full any less and it doesnt,my mate fills his with 2.5 and his dip reads full, odd] 2. Tappets. The inlet and exhaust clearances differ, what are the best settings to use. 3. Spark plug gaps. Any ideas what are the correct settings/numbers to work to and why there are differences ?? Would the different oil capacities be down to some cars having baffled sumps fitted from the factory. If so, what capacity corresponds to a bafalled sump - 2.4 or 3.7 ?? Cheers Answer: thats odd try comparing dip sticks or even swopping over and see wot readings you get the inlet valves are set at 0.2mm the exh are set at 0.25mm and must be done on a cold engine ......ie left overnight plug gaps are normaly 0.6mm champ n3g are at 0.6 but cosult the maker of the plug for exact plug clearance as they can slightly differ depends on who makes them |

Subject: yet another 17"" question! Question: hi wiz I have spotted a nice set of 17"" for sale, there off a vauxhall but i have been told they fit a 5, but after reading posts, it seems they need 35mm offset, and to be honset i dont have a clue what that means! is it jst a matter of putting a spacer in, or do i have to buy some specially designed for the 5? Answer: probably best to ask someone who knows about wheels....such as soemone who sells them...and who is impartial (very unlikely). look on the web to see about offset. it basically mean how far the wheels stick in or out from the car when sat on the hub. |

Subject: Tapping Question: Hi wiz, I've recently bought a ph2 and it makes quite a loud tapping noise at all times, any ideas? I also had some oil in the expansion tank, It's not using excessive amounts of water. Also on the dash the oil warning light is on constantly and the quage reads empty despite being full - faulty sensor? Thanks - Paul Answer: swap the wires around on the oil pressure sender unit. sounds like someone has put them on the wrong way round! the tapping is most likely to be tappets....or even a leaky manifold gasket...which makes a very odd metallic tapping noise... |
