Subject: turbo smoke? Question: cheers wiz. afta recently goin for a spin i noticed black (i think) smoke when i put my foot down. thing is i can only see it in the night when i look in my rear view mirror and headlights from other cars behind me get blasted with it. iv checked the oil level and its the same as when i last topped it up, could it be jus burning rich or something more serious. my s/s tailpipe is always black its doin my head in, help? Answer: rich mixture. nothing more than that. ironically, you shouldn't really call it a 'rich' mixture, as when you run a 'rich' mixture, you aren't 'rich' for very long, especially when you do 20mpg!:-P |

Subject: Fitting Rover Tomcat T25 Turbo. Question: We are looking into fitting a Rover Tomcat Turbo. This has a built in dump-valve on the compressor housing side. What is the best method of blocking this valve off once the original cover is removed? Answer: i suggest you ask the person who's selling it to you. If it's a certain south birmingham sourced unit, then they definately know what they are doing :-) usually involving some flat rubber seal, and a triangular piece of metal.... |

Subject: Running Rich Question: I have noticed recently som1, asked a question of blackness in there exhaust. I maybe running rich on the mixture, where is the best place to sort this out or can i do it myself? At the moment i am running 16psi....and doing 20mpg around town, on the motorway around 30mpg if i'm lucky.... Can u please advise.... Answer: you may well be running rich on the mixture...but ask yourself this... which is worse, extra money on fuel, or a blown headgasket? im assuming the car doesnt bog down when picking up from low revs.... if it doesn't then the fuelling should be ok. |

Subject: strut top bearings Question: havig read a question from mad andy (2011) im having the same problem. i can hear my sprins clunk into place when turning the steering wheell. u said 2 get new stut top bearings. i got sum new bearings but when i went 2 fit them there wasnt any there. i tryed 2 fit them but wouldnt fit. even with the spring off. have u any idea what the problem is? Answer: they are there. the strut top should go like this... from the spring... 1)metal plate, with hole in that spring locates in. 2)bearing (flat thing) 3)'top hat' that gets hole punched through when you lower it... 4)rubber donut. 5)metal top plate that bolts onto shock tower...two bolt fitting.. |

Subject: 5 1.4GTL Conversion:) Question: Hi wizard working hard i hope- Im currently planning on getting a gtx 1.7 engine altho ive heard the volvo engine can go into 5's. Just wandering if i got a volvo 440 turbo 1.7, if i take the whole engine/gearbox out complete and put it in my 5, using its subframe will it work ok. i believe the speedo is plug connection not digital so this is good. What other factors are there? Thanks Gareth Answer: the multiple ecu's that control the volvo engine are VERY inflexible. My best mate has one, and they ARE a nightmare. |

Subject: Fueling ?? Question: Quote, ""im assuming the car doesnt bog down when picking up from low revs.... if it doesn't then the fuelling should be ok."" In response to a question asked about rich mixture, what if it does & what does it mean the engine is doing ?? Some times the pick up from low revs isnt too good [espically in a high gear] in my car. Once I have a new clutch fitted its going on a r/r for a full set up but until then is it worth lowering the mixture a bit ?? Answer: it really depends what size turbo you have.- when it comes on boost is critical. if you are running carb jets that are too big, or running the engine too cold, then the fuel never mixes properly with the air.... hence....splut splut splut, as you press the throttle. large turbos come on boost sooo late, that you need most of the fuelling at the top end... smaller ones need fuel lower down the rev range. |

Subject: Oil Pressure Question: Just wondered if ya could shed any light on why my 5GTT somtimes runs between 5 and 6 on the oil pressure bar gauge. It doesnt do it all the time just some times, although it does it more recently. Cheers Marty Answer: cars usually run higher pressure, when the oil is cold... cos as it gets hotter it gets runnier. the other factor could be shite (i.e metallic bits..) blocking any inline oil filter or even the one way valve in the oil feed to the turbo, as this is what the gauge is really measuring. but then again it could be just a fecked sender and gauge unit! :-P |

Subject: Cup Mod with a GTT Spider Valve and Single Port Actuator? Question: I am about to try and figure out how to redo the barb plumbing so I can do the Cup Mod to work with a GTT Spider Valve and Single Port Actuator? Can you advise me what to plumb where?!!! Thanks as always!!! ![]() Answer: not to sound like im passing the buck here....but i think the key to your answer lies in ""GTT SPIDER VALVE"". as it's a GT Tuning product, this means that you can't possibly comprehend how they work, hence its probably best if you give Roland a bell. Im sure he'll bend over backwards to help, ""cos that the type of nice guy he is"" ;-) |

Subject: Running Rich Question: Hey Wiz I notice that there seems to be a lot of talk about cars running rich at the moment. Something in the air?! With ref. to a Q&A posted a couple of days ago, my car also seems to be running rich at the moment, and IS bogging down when picking up from low revs. It's also CANING the fuel. Is this something I can sort myself, or should I be heading to the nearest RR for a tune-up? Cheers Jon Answer: several factors here.... what boost you running? what fuel? have you got an 'uprated' carb? you'd better bring a selection of carb jets to the RR place, cos what are they really gonna do? |

Subject: ECU tachometer output Question: I need to find out the pulse width of the output signal of the ECU that goes to the tachometer and fuel pump relay. I need it because I have installed a programmable ECU (four point fuel injection) and it has an outpup wire for tachometer and fuel pump. Answer: flippin eck!- do you want me to tell you how to perform invasive brain surgery too? As far as detecting your pulse goes.... im sure places like maplin or RS have equipment that can do this... i doubt renault will have such info...but give them a call anyway. |

Subject: Bearings and seals Question: Wanting to replace the bearings in my turbo and seals which are past it whats the best way to part the turbo to replace them i can see there is a surclip but do u need heat Answer: the problem with changing the seals on a turbo, is that you have to take off the compressor wheel. Now unless you mark it, you'll never get it rebalanced properly down in yer garden shed! to get the circlip off, try any method you can...WD40, heat, blow torch, emergency cutting gear....anything really. housing should then come off with a little 'effort'. |

Subject: Brakes Question: I recently asked you a Q on EBC brake pads my pedal feels a bit soft.... so i assumed the front pads needed replaceing.... i have bought greenstuff ones however!!!! i have taken the wheel off and checked and the pad seems fine quite a bit on it but......the rear seem to have worn more than the front?????? Rear are standard pads i amd thinking of returning the new pads..... but aint it the front pads that go 1st???? Please advise.... as it may need bleeding is this a good thing??? Which brake fluid should i use??? Answer: new rear pads are 11mm thick and are ok down to a thickness of 5mm measuring the total thickness including metal backing if your wearing your rear pads out fast it could be that you have had the rear of the car lowered and not had the limiter reset .. this could also be the reason that you have got a soft feel to your pedal |

Subject: Re: Fueling ?? Question: Std carb & jets, turbo tech stg 1 blower. 10 psi at moment [slipping clutch]. I think it’s the air corrector that’s at fault. I had the carb cleaned not so long ago and the air corrector jet broke in the thread. The jet was progressively drilled & apparently no bits went down the hole but i'm not convinced [new jet fits perfectly]. With the carb body TOTALY stripped I can here a rattle when I shake it. Can this part of the body be taken out and replaced if so how [the bit the air corrector screws into] or is the body scrap ?? The car seems to idle fine and drives OK under medium boost, but its when the throttle is lightly applied at any revs it seems hold back a bit now and again [no miss fire] & when the throttle is snapped open and full boost kicks in it sometimes does the same [still no miss]. CO2's are fine. Any ideas ?????? Answer: well... removing the emulsion tube and cap, is no easy thing. the cap is where the air corrector screws into. ive tried tapping it smacking it and generally hitting it trying to get it to move. never suceeded. haynes also says the emulsion tube is push fitted in. although i have recently found out a way to remove the cap.... there are two screws that hold the carb togther....from the base upwards. remove one of these and it should be a direct fit into the air corrector hole. grip the end of the screw in the vice and tug it. the cap 'should' come off. then pair of pliers and the emulsion tube is out. I HAVE NEVER TRIED THIS METHOD THOUGH....YET! then clean out all the hole in the emulsion tube that are bound to be blocked with crappola! also: have you tried making your plug gap smaller? |

Subject: SOFT PEDAL Question: Hi, I recently asked you a Q regarding my rear pads wearing quicker than the front.... i thought it was the fronts that go quicker??? U advised me that the Limiter may need resetting due to lowering of rear... How do u do this... and how much do i set it too?? Lastly could it be that that front pads aint gripping the front discs as much as the rear.... If so can i check or see if i could make the front more effective as i've still got loads of pad left on my greenstuff pads.... and i've had tme on for over a year????? Answer: trust me, im the don! its the rear brake bias valve. adjustment is via the threaded bar that loops over the rear trailing arm. whether you wind it in or out is anyones guess *lol* as for the brake wear thing...just think about it. sort the brake bias first, all will become clear. |

Subject: windows Question: hello mate if i want some faster and better electric windows is there any you can recomend cheers andy Answer: erm....nope! could always try lubing the runners and mechanism in the current one. the window usually get squashed inbetween the two halves of the door...i.e the gap get squeezed togther and this causes, poor window motion! |

Subject: compression test Question: hi wizard, done a compression test on my car to day its a 87 e-reg from water pump end it reads 119psi-120psi-125psi-120psi does this sound ok to you.thanks how can i tell if the head gasket has gone by doing a compression test.thanks mate Answer: sounds ok ish....as long as you don't intend on running big boost... cos im sure the last few cars ive done a compression test on have been around 150-160psi per cylinder. could be just my gauge! if the gasket/piston ring/valve has gone then the compression reading will be down. |

Subject: Clocks Question: HI wiz, over the winter period i fitted white dials to my clocks and i also put the milometer forward 4000 miles by hand (as it wasnt working and i didnt want the miles to be the same for the two mots)But now my speedo isnt working properly. It only rises when i go fast i.e i will be doing 100 and it reads 60. The needle seems quite free.also the connections in the back seem ok as does the connection on the passenger suspension strut. Could i have damaged it when i took the needle off as it was quite tight. thanx for any help. Answer: so are you saying that if you are travelling 40mph then you dont get a reading at all, or are you saying the reading is right out? sounds like you've: a) set the zero point completely wrong b) screwed the clock up. |

Subject: I think i know what you will say Question: Hi wiz I have had a problem with my car running hot for 3-4 months now and i had drilled holes in the stat to hide it But i have just had new pump stat and switch put in and i am getting something strange happen the temp gage sits to high for the and i know this cuz it has a low temp stat in it Strange thing that happens is it only sit at norm when the revs are above 4k as if the water dont get round as fast as it should and when revs high it does. A couple of times after a good redlining it will run norm til a turn the car off and leave for 30mins and when get going again its running to hot and i can't get it to run norm again What can this be cuz i can not rev it high when trying to do 30mph??? I think i know what it is cuz there is only one more part to replace for the cooling but would like to hear what you think Thanx Answer: ok, after decifering the hidden message in the above paragraph... where is the temp gauge coming uo to? 30° or 45° off the bottom of the gauge? - i.e your version of hot and my version of hot maybe different.... also when did you last replace the rad?- could be blocked or generally pooed up! |

Subject: Clutch Cable Question: Hello Wiz, I was ""poodling"" aroung my home town on Sat eve, came off a roundabout and my clutch cable snapped. I managed to get hold of a new cable, but im having REAL trouble fitting it... it just doesnt seem long enough. I think ive got a group N clutch (soft, hard, soft when putting the pedal down) ... will this make a difference? Cheers, Tiny Answer: fit the pedal end first, route it behind the rear angine mount. then fit to the gearbox. if it appears it isn't long enuff, then you need a friend to help you! you must pull the ratchet mechanism with your hand, ontop of the clutch pedal, so that your friend can hook the cable onto the clutch fork...then let go of the mechanism, this will then self adjust. then 'pump' the pedal a few times so that it can readjust itself. |

Subject: Broken Wheel Bolt Question: Hi, have managed to snap a front wheel bolt. No end of drilling, tapping will shift it, so it might be quicker to replace the drive flange. Do all 5's have the same front hub, drive flange arrangement? (most scrap yards have standatd 5's but few turbos) or do any other Renault models share the same bits?? Thanks, Tom Answer: yeah clios mk1's are the same (non 16V), what is important is the external diameter of the flange, i.e the bit that fits inside the bearing inner race, and the splines that fit over the driveshaft as it pokes thru the hub! im pretty sure that normal 5's are the same too. |

Subject: fuel gauge Question: HI WIZ, NO I HAVENT GOT WHITE DIALS FITTED SO IT CANT BE THAT.A BLOKE FROM WORK RECKONS ITS SOMETHING POSSIBLY TO DO WITH THE SENDER UNIT IN THE FUEL TANK, ANY MORE IDEAS FOR ME TO TRY OR SHOULD I JUST SEE AN AUTO ELECTRICIAN WITH THE FAULT. CHEERS MATE.WOZA. Answer: ok, i answered this, posted it up, re-read it and decided i was talking rubbish! basically, get your back seat up. remove the black circular cover. then with a screwdriver tap the lip seal holding the sender in place, round so that you can remove it. then open the unit up. there is an electrical contact running the entire length of the unit, and there is a slider that registers the fuel depth. clean all the contacts and make sure the slider- slides up and down! |

Subject: Brake bias Question: Now u've confused me The Don...... O.K..... If i take the rear tyre off is the brake bias setting easy 2 do... would i have to wind it clockwise or anti clockwise??? i.e what difference will it make on the brakes.. Will this make a difference on the pad wear...would this then mean the brakes won't be as efficient??? How would this make a difference on the front pads??? is there a seperate setting for this? If you can explain then u r THE DON..lol Answer: dunno about the adjustment, you will have to have a play with it! it will make a difference to pad wear as the rears should start to work more, hence the rears wear quicker, and the fronts wear less than usual. define braking effiency... |

Subject: Re:Fuel Question: "".....remove one of these and it should be a direct fit into the air corrector hole. grip the end of the screw in the vice and tug it. the cap 'should' come off...."" Sound advice Wiz, took an old carb apart to see if it works and the technique is spot on. You have to be a bit careful screwing the bolt in as the thread is seated [to stop the air corrector going all the way in to the tube I suppose] so it only goes in about 3-4 turns. It took a bit of ""gentle persuasion"" [there had to be a hammer involved somewhere !!] to get the tube out but it came after about 3 taps. Don’t expect the bolt to remain in perfect nick though, it got a bit bent. I'll take the carb on the car apart this weekend to see if helps the running. Cheers oh helpful one. Answer: feck me it worked! *roflol* |
