Subject: Roller bearing Turbo

Question:
I have a K-tec Rollerbearing turbo, and it starts to spin up about at 3k, and hits about 15 at 4.7k. Is this right or should it be quicker?

Answer:
depends on what size housings it has got. I'd query this with ktech, as they know the specs of it.
I used to have a laggy T3 rollerbearing, which reached max boost at around 4k...then i broke it :-(

Subject: BOOST

Question:
I asked about my turbo earlier but anyway, how much boost(PSI) can i be running safely. And how much max should i use??. (I got KTR350 rollerbearing, uprated head gasket, low com pistions, charge cooler)

Answer:
as long as your carburrettor is set up correctly....you can use 25+ psi.
if you run 'race' fuel anything is possible ;-)

Subject: running hot

Question:
help! ive just fitted a low temp fan switch, low temp stat & copper rad & changed the rad cap. The car stays fairly cool when im driving fast, but heats up to 2/3 mark very quickly when i slow down and takes a while to cool once it gets there. it never goes above 2/3 as the fan kicks in. its been bled a couple of times and that don't seem to help. any ideas what the problem could be? where should the temp ideally sit?

Answer:
mine does the same thing...but i've got a 83° thermostat, with no holes drilled in it.
check the heat range on the thermostat....i BET it says 83°. if you want it to run cooler, drill a 1mm hole in the edge of it, so the water can bypass it. if this isn't enuff, then enlarge to a 2mm hole.

Subject: hoses

Question:
when buying samco boost hoses is it better to keep the overboost sensor on or not? what difference does this make? the cars running standard boost at the moment but i'm gonna increase it to about 15psi sometime soon.

Answer:
personally, i wouldn't bother......unless in the future, you plan to run some boost pressure operated goodies, such as water injection...etc etc...where a boost pressure sensor is ideal ;-)

Subject: Grp A carb

Question:
Hello again my friend. I have recently got a T28 rollerbearing turbo and running 16 psi. But the car doesn't seem to be as quick as i think it should be. My friend who has a T25 tomcat turbo could keep up with me only running 14psi. My tuners say i need a Grp A carb so i can run more boost safely and the car will go quicker. Is this true or is he trying to get all of my money?

Answer:
what jets are you running in your carb at the moment?

Subject: Clutch rattle?

Question:
ive got this rattle, its very similar to a rattle that i heard when my last clutch went, when i depress the clutch pedal to the floor the rattling appears it doesnt make a difference what the engine rpm is and wether or not i select a gear, it does'nt last for long, when the clutch pedal is not depressed it doesnt make the noise. i recently took all the sound deadening out, which means the pedal is able to travel further? would this make a difference? because when the pedals depressed and the rattle appears i only have to raise the pedal an inch or so to stop it? thanks in advance

Answer:
ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha...ho-ho ho ho!
i had exactly the same problem on an AP racing paddle clutch centre, with a Volvo 480 turbo cover...
what was happening was the pedal pushed the metallic teeth of the clutch cover, onto the plate springs...causing a very pleasant 'tinkling' sound! in the end i pushed my mat under the clutch pedal (hence reducing travel), and it stopped! *lol*. Unfortunately, within 4 weeks, my AP paddle centre had snapped between all of the springs, and had also COMPLETELY GROUND 1mm off the face of the cover and flywheel!
take this tale, as a precaution....but you gotta agree it sounds similar to your problem.

mind you, when you fitted the centre plate, did you fit it round the right way? cos it you didnt, the springs on the plate are currently wearing a groove in the flywheel bolts! - i did this too....also makes a tinkling sound!

Subject: Loss of boost pressure!?!

Question:
Hello Wiz

My name is Kathryn and I have just joined the club! Renault Turbo club that is!

My renault GTT only when in mild/heavy traffic suffers from loss of boost pressure then when I get out of the jam and put my foot down nothing? then after a 5 or 10 minuites of traffic free driving it just cuts in as tho something had cooled down? I've bought all the Samco boost preasure pipes as they were very old and looked knackered, but still the same!. I was then advised that it maybe the turbo unit itself on its way out and under hot strain the blades/shaft expands thus no boost until it cools down and can spin freely woosh!! boost is back! so it did in theory make sense and it was a tiny bit smokey - not often, just now and then, so my boyfriend got me a stage 2 unit as a present for my birthday and, altho it is a lot better, it has not completely gone away! and after all this money later it's quite annoying as you might imagine!. Is there a temperture sensor or unit somewhere as I have changed the things we think it can be?

Please help !!!!

Many thanks
Kathryn Scrimgeour

Answer:
this is very very strange.
it could be so many things!
check for boost leaks.....perhaps a leaky intercooler - check this with white spirit...take the unit out, pore in white spirit, swish around and then check to see, if any has leaky out of any holes.
also check that there is a seal between the carb top and the carb itself, as people tend to forget to put these on....
have you checked the manifold gasket for leaks?

best way is to find someone with a 5 locally, who knows what they're talking about, and get them to have a look!

if its of any consequence, i'd of pointed my finger at the turbo first too..

Subject: Low power

Question:
Hi Wiz i got my car RR after fitting all engine parts in my profile (except the exust and filter) and re-torquing the head and re done my tappets. Before i fitted them i got 120 at the flywheel @ 10 psi but after fitting them @ 17psi i only get 134 bhp and 158 torque and the fulling is aparently spot on. As far as i know the engine is in good condition with only 75,000 mile and has a good vacume of -11 psi. I know it is vage but do you have any idear what could be causing the low figures as i was expecting around the 150 mark for bhp.
Thanks
Chris

Answer:
depends on alot of things.
your Rolling Road for a start!
check your compression, to see if you are losing any power that way!

Subject: Turbo Dynamics MD 28r

Question:
Howdy Mr W,

Just a quicky. I am purchasing a Hybrid turbo, Turbo Dynamics MD28r and I was wondering what is the max PSI I can run this upto on my relatively standard engine, (Induction kit / scorpion etc.) At the moment I only have a strapped intercooler but I will soon replace this with an alloy one. Could you please tell me for both scinarios please?

Andy

Answer:
Andy, you smell of wee. ;-)
the main problem here is....what has been done to your carburettor?- i am hoping that you've got larger main / smaller air corrector in there, else the max you'll be running is 15 psi safely.
It won't matter about the strapped intercooler...they can run 25psi if necessary.
get the fuelling sorted and 23psi is safely achievable. - the turbo can run more i think, but you could be asking father christmas for a new headgasket, sooner rather than later.

Subject: what boost and jets

Question:
alright mate
just fully rebuiling a engine at the moment
every thing new apart from pistons and crank
got a uprated clutch
grp a head set
stage 2 cam
t25 turbo
polished head
all manifold etc heat raped
full mongoose
filter
cossie intercooler in front bumper to handle the boost !

just wanna no what boost you think the engine could handle sensibly was gunna run it as 20psi but people say it could yake more

what would be the best size jets and air corrector

Answer:
u can run upto 23psi safely, after this you have to start pumping alot more fuel into cool things down... either that or get water injection...
assuming that you've got a standard carb at the moment, i'd stick a 100 air corrector, 140 main, and stick a slightly larger enrichment jet in too, probably a 125.

you'll probably over fuel like a bitch, but you won't blow up....*lol*

Subject: Ignition Feed to Ignition Module

Question:
My car is very tempermental. Sometimes it will start over fine and restrt good. Other times i have gone to startand the engine turns over fine(with a new starter motor) but it doesnt get a spark from the main HT. I have fault finded the problem to a positive feed from igniton to the module.....sometimes power is there sometimes it is not??????
I have replaced the HT leads but was wondering if i needed new module or wiring from ignition to the module.

Answer:
are you sure it's not the timing sensor lead? im sure that if the ecu doesn't see a signal from the TDC sensor, then it won't produce a spark!!!
if this aint the cause of yer probs, then suspenct the relay next to ecu, as this supplies the power to it. - can make a very simple immobiliser, by cutting the looped yellow wire and sticking a switch in it!
aiiii!

Question:
cheers mate

any way got myself a 1.3 jet just for and starters and the correct air corrector

would this be safe to run 20-21 psi

how easy is to drill a jet out and what does the 140 etc stand for

cheers for your help mate

what boost do ya think will have to be run to make the magical 200

Answer:
yeah this should be fine for 20psi. i hope you got the 125 enricher jet in too though....
140=1.4mm
125=1.25mm
etc etc

Subject: Intercooler

Question:
Hi! what is optimum size of intercooler? I can have new intercooler with size I want

Answer:
i have no idea what the optimum size of intercooler is.
but there are a few things to remember.
the larger the intercooler, the more pressure/flow loss you get across it.
also you are restricted to how much room you have at the front of the car!

Subject: 4 STAR FUEL

Question:
I accidently put 4 star fuel in the other day cost 99.9 per litre.

The usual one is as u know 4 star (LRF)
75.9.

Would it do any harm to the engine?

can't believe i payed an xtra £4.00 for less fuel, but it still did more mileage and worked out about the same????

Answer:
4 star is what you are supposed to run the car on - back in the day!
much better for the valve seats!

Question:
If rust around the windscreen is quite bad (well it isnt gonna get any better) is their a fix....can u get the windscreen surround from renault and get it welded in????? im just guessing here....

Answer:
keep guessing, cos your guess is as good as mine!
you probably could get a replacement A pillar and surround for the car, but the cost and time and money could be very prohibitive!
best get the Rust Fix on it and start filling :-(

Subject: Horrible Tapping noise

Question:
After a bit of high revving (I have a flamer kit which needs to be revved to about 6k) I noticed a terrible tapping noise coming from the engine.

It sounds as if a lifter is knocking against the top of the rocker cover. However, it is not a constant tapping. It's more like an odd metallic knock on the cover, fairly often but not regular... any ideas what it is?

It sounds terrible, and the car really does sound ill! Help!

Answer:
Emma,
with all the 'helpful' blokes working at a certain magazine, surely they've come up with all the 'suggestions' you'll ever need ;-)

personally speaking i'd have to have a good listen at your engine, to see whether the noise was from the top end or the bottom end.
if it sounds like a set of 'metal knuckles' knocking on a dustbin lid, then it's the bottom end. if it's a higher pitched tap then its yer tappets.

if you're at the french car show i'll have a look then if you're in it ;-)

the exhaust and inlet manifolds SHARE the same gasket.

Question:
I have just made an charge air for my car can you suggest where i can buy some straight silicon hose and hard pipe from, cheers.

Answer:
straight silicon hose can be bought from anywhere really. Demon tweeks or other such places sell it.
hard pipe can be sourced from many places....probably the cheapest way, is goto yer local scrap metal merchants and ask them....they are bound to have some tubing in the size your want....usually for feck all £££!

Subject: white smoke

Question:
hello wiz
i have a problem with exhaust chucking out loads of white smoke when engine is hot and idleing, i have read through previous posts and you suggest a water leak, i have checked all my hoses and they all seem ok, left cardbord under car and no leaks, i have a new thick head gasket and turbo, all done under 3000 miles and car has not been run over 1.2 bar so i dont think there at fault, can you shead some light on it, or post me some wizard dust :0)

Answer:
first question from me....
are you loosing ANY water at all? it could be condensation....

if you are losing water....
Q1)is the water system being pressurised? Mayo on oil cap?
A1)yes: headgasket blown.- or even liner if you are really unlucky!
A2)No: headgasket is ok.....could be turbo problems.

You could always pressure test the water cooling of the turbo housing, to see if there are any leaks....

Subject: battery tray

Question:
i am changing my battery tray due to rust, wondered what the rubber/block connected to the bottom is. do i need this or can i do away with it?

Answer:
erm, to be honest ive never changed one, but common sense tells me that its either one of two things.
it could be to stop the battery tray touching whatever it sits on, thus stopping that corroding too.
or
it could stop large bits of debris blocking the drainage channel that runs underneath the battery tray!

if it's wrong im sure a cleverer turbo wizard will come along and change this answer for you!- in the mean time you got the apprentice's advice ;-)

was a garrett turbo which is quite a bit bigger than the standard jobbie

does anyone no how big it is

on the turbo reads

BSK 3
M27
AIR 48

anyhelp would be apprciated

Answer:
Mr Jackson!!!!
time to ask one of the MANY turbo rebuilders!
it sounds like you are reading off the turbo compressor. you are better off looking at the tag on the turbo core...assuming it's still got a tag :-(

Subject: HELP!

Question:
Cars got gradually worse over the past few weeks - it won't start at all now - i've changed dizzy cap, rotor arm, leads, spark plugs.

Its turning over and there fuel getting to the carb.

Someone told me that the TDC sensor wires may have broken but i haven't got a clue where this is!!!

any advice?

Answer:
yeah, Tidy boy, can i call you a plum?
you PM'd me yesterday, you testicle!
and my advice still stands.....check the timing sensor wire! *lol*
the unit bolts ontop of the gearbox, where it joins the engine. the wire is black and feeds over the top of the turbo to either a grey connector, or goes straight through the bulkhead and connects to the 'ecu' (ignition unit).
hope this helps ;-)
if you get a muliti meter and measure the resistance of the sensor it should give you a reading of around 200 ohms
also if you get the 200 ohms cheak the voltage should give you an A/C voltage the higher the better

Subject: power

Question:
hi wiz,
My car seems to not be producing as much power as before-i've turnt the boost up-so running about 14 psi, and its still not pulling me back like it used to.
The boost gauge still goes up correctly-so not leaking boost.
Im stumped-any suggestions?

Answer:
you've got used to the boost.
happens time and time again. bit like a drug, u need to keep upping the boost to get the same rush... :-(
however, if it's not that then....it could be a leaking boost from the dumpvalve/overboost switch areas (i know you said that you aren't leaking any boost, but are you REALLY sure?)
failing that, test the compression of each cylinder. just to see if it's down.
if thats ok, then make sure that the carb jets aren't blocked causing lack of fuel into engine, which will give 'flat' performance.- infact check to see that the accelerator pump is working correctly, as this gives the initial 'umph' when you press the throttle.

hope ive scrambled your brains!- i know mine are! aiiii! :-P

Question:
it happend wit my old turbo, now its da same wit my new 1!wen my engine gets hot my turbo hardly works!sounds like sumit is blocked

Answer:
""when my engine gets hot it hardly works""
how do you mean...EXACTLY?

does the boost pressure drop off?
does it just not rise at all?
is there an odd metallic scraping from the turbo?
do the blades in the compressor housing move from side to side..alot!?

if the turbo isn't spining at all, the max you can get out of it is 90mph (allegedly) in 5th, foot to the floor. is this whats happening?

Subject: All torque, no power

Question:
Wiz,

Recent power run showed I have 178lbft of torque (this is good) but only 148Bhp (this is un-good); torque curve drops alarmingly after about 4000RPM.

I think it could be one of two things:
1) Weak wastegate actuator - I'm using the standard boostgauge BTW, dunno how acurate it is at higher boost.
2) Fuelling problem.

Most peeps reckon it's a fuelling issue and I was hoping you could shed some light on the matter. FYI, I am running about 18-20Psi @ carb elbow on a T25 (MD84??) in conjunction with a Pace chargecooler and a GT Tuning ""Gp.A"" carb., the spec of which I believe to be a 130main, 0.9 air corrector and a 27mm body.

Your help is appreciated, fella ;-)

Answer:
you need more fuel.
try a bigger main jet.

Subject: Water Loss!! HELP

Question:
Hello

My Ph1 is losing a quite a lot of water and i dont know were?
On start-up it usually has some white smoke and i have been told it sometimes does when i change gear.

One of my bleed screws has been letting out a little water, when the car is running and hot it spits a little but i dont think it would mean i would lose as much water as it does.

It is really confusing me. dunno wether to invest in new silicon coolant hoses and new header tank or switch to a ph2 cooling system.

Sorry for the long winded question

Thanks bud!!

Answer:
your best bet is to look at all the hoses whilst the car is running.
cos to lose that amount of water it's either liner/head gasket or pipe/rad leak!
