Subject: Power loss Question: When I mean a power loss, the turbo doesnt work at all The turbo makes a very lound spinning noise Answer: sounds like yer turbo is fecked. if it 'wails' when it comes on boost, then the turbine blades are probably chewing their way through your turbine housing..... hence no boost, and hence no power. |

Subject: solenoid valve? Question: Hi wiz.. i recently asked a question on the boards about hearing a strange noiseunder accelaration. it sounded like a 'blowing' or 'sucking ' sound.. someone suggested it could be BOOST PRESSURE, BLOWING PAST THE SOLENOID VALVE. What is this and can it be remmeded? Answer: solenoid valve connects to the perc fan and the boost pipe, about 10cm away from where it joins the carb top. the actual unit is mounted onto the bulkhead, behind the carb. to remedy it just block the hole from the boost pipe...job done. |

Subject: low comp. piston Question: hi, I would like to fit low comp piston, larger turbo entc. but I use my car every day only at meetings on sprint I want to use max boost, Is it bad to drive long times on standart boost with low compr pistons. and wath can i do to keep my compresion standart on 1.5 bar boost? water injection I alraedy have, I was thinking of a second gas tank with hy octane fuel? or how many boost does it takes to compensate the low com. pistons. greetz from A turbo fan from belgium Answer: it isn't bad to run on standard boost on low comp pistons, it just means it'll be slower than a car with standard compression. im not sure how much boost it takes to compensate for the low comp pistons, im assuming it depends on how much metal has been taken off the top of them....how low compression are they? |

Subject: oil leak Question: Hi i found a oil leak under the engine but can't find where it is from can it be the intercooler as it is all straped up or i have a very small hose next to passanger light but i can't find where it is to go Answer: there's only a few places 5's leak from. check to see that the oil return hose from the turbo aint split. check the pipes going to the rad aren't leaking. check to see that the oil filter is screwed on tight. check that the sump isn't leaking along it's edge. crank seal in the timing cover? or even the crank seal behind the gearbox (a real bummer) the intercooler will not be leaking oil, unless you've got a completely knackered turbo, and filled it up with oil! |

Subject: leccy windows Question: hi wiz, how can i get the leccy window motor out without putting the window down? mine has stoped working when i put it up,it is the motor cos ive checked it for power and theres power all the way along the wires then it stops at the motor, thanks, stef Answer: oh dear, when i had this problem, i had to drill two holes in the panel at the inside top of the door (it gets covered by the long plastic grey trim panel.) and undo the window mechanism that way.... it was the only way i could think of at the time...... you may have to do the same.... unless you get a car battery, and connect it directly to the winder motor, and maybe force the motor to work, with full battery ampage! |

Subject: pinking Question: on my r5 i get pinking on high boost around 14psi. i have exhaust, filter, dump valve, in-car boost, boost hoses, up rated head gasket, hybrid turbo, and also things like the adjustable timing sensor that was advanced though i have returned it to its original position at the moment because of this pinking. at noraml boost around 8-10psi i dont get pinking. All the plugs leads cap rotor arm etc have just been replaced thinking this was at fault. i also run the car on optimax fuel.the car never used to do this so was wondering what it could be?? maybe under pressuring fuel pump or carb?? Answer: how do you know its pinking? could be an engine rattle or anything? you do need to rule this out first, before i start suggesting you change the ecu, or the fuel pump or jets etc etc... |

Subject: Water injection jets Question: G'day there. I am currently fitting a home-made water injection kit but have come to a little problem. I need to know what size jet to use. I am going to buy my spray jet from ERL but am unsure of the correct jet size. What size would you recommend to ensure suitable cooling (at 16 PSI) but not to cause flame out, bore wash, etc. Hope you can help. Cheers. Answer: go for the smallest they got, which is a 0.4mm jet. i did the same as you once, and used a 0.7mm jet, this literally pored water down into my engine..... i think i had the first steam powered R5....;-) |

Subject: Garett T3 Question: will a Garett T3 or T4 fit straight on my phase II ? Answer: no. the reason being is that the t3 exhaust housing where it fits the manifold is too big for the t2 style manifold we have. unless of course you bodge the holes, or weld on a converter plate. then you gotta suss out what todo with the exhaust elbow, as well as the oil feed. does it sound like i done this before.....:-P |

Subject: Quiet Scorpian System? Question: Hi, Just fitted a Scorpian 4"" System and its very quiet compaired with my mates, no burbling etc....not happy. The only mods I have are a dump valve (with broken spring so it bleeds all the time) and JR Filter and the gaskets on the turbo seem to have gone (smell of exhaust fumes when Turbo boosts high), could these be causing this problem. Any help appreciated. Chris Answer: could be just down to tunning..or engine set up if your running a realy rich mix then its gonna be a bit quieter than a set up that done proper (ie less pops and bangs on overun) |

Subject: twin intercooling Question: I have a twin core intercooler on the standart place, can I also fit a front mounted intercooler for more cooling or is this to much pressure los? Answer: you can fit as much intercooling as you want. some people reckon that it makes the turbo feel more laggy....others reckon it makes no difference! bear in mind though, that cool, is definately better! |

Subject: Stereo Question: Hi Wizard Just wondered what the stereo options etc were when purchasing a brand new phase 2 Renault 5 GT turbo? Thanks Yellow Answer: you know what, i really have no funking idea. and what's worse is that i REALLY don't care whether they stuck in a Phillips 660 (1-4 presets, + tape deck) into the ph 1 cars or that they put the slightly more updated phillips unit (in black with gold detailing, 4 x 6W, 7 preset radio channels, and tape deck)into the ph 2 cars. i somehow doubt that they gave you anymore choice back in the day. ;-) |

Subject: HOW MUCH DEAR.. Answer: unfortunately Cheddar Road is now a Cul de Sac, you cant drive down it now, unless you wanna pull a shady 3 point turn at the end of it... anyway, anyone with half an ounce of sense knows that the best place for prostitutes in Edgbaston, primarily, Rotten Park Rd, or Gillot Rd. So if you were under a lamp post you were more than likely, about to be relieved of all your belongings, and beaten to a pulp.... Subject: Dump Valve Woosh! Question: Hey Wiz, When i accelerate I get a wooshing sound (like a plane taking off) when the turbo kicks in followed by a quiet dump from my forge dump valve. Also noticed that when idling the dump valve stays open. Has the dump valves spring broke? Cheers for the help! Chris Answer: sounds more like a leak from near the turbo/manifold joint. or could be yer in car bleed valve hissing. Dump valves on 5's are supposed to stay open at idle.....your dump valve is fine. Actually, no it's not, i think it sounds terminal *scratches chin and shakes head*, if i were you, i'd give it to me for nothing, cos thats all it's worth, scrap value of about 1p. I'll give you a nice Bosch one, in tasteful black plastic, as proven by VW, Audi, Skoda, Volvo, even GT Tuning....;-) |

Subject: water pump temp sender Question: is their any way i can test wether my sender is broke rather than just buy a new one as my temp guage dont work but i thought it may have been dodgy wiring as i have no speedo either. what colour wires go to the sender. my rev guage and boost guage and other electrics work tho. Answer: there should be a green and an orange going to the sender. I am assuming that you've got them the correct way round, else it will not work. the wiring is very weak, so they may well be broken! |

Subject: Head bolt torque sequence. Question: Hello Mr W, Stanky p*ss mearchant old giffer here. Can you please clarify what the correct tightening sequence for torquing an uprated head down is please. My understanding of this is: - 1. From cold torque head down to 45-50 ft lbs. 2. Run engine engine up to temp. 3. Let engine cool and slacken off .25 of a turn, then re-torque to 55-60 ft lbs. 4. Run for 500 miles (easy going) and then let engin cool and re-torque to 55-60 ft lbs. 5. Start spankin. Many thanks, Andy. PS. Got to go, my travel rug is in need of a change. I wash it by hand you know and the water looks like lucasade when washed. Bye!!!!!!!! Answer: well, if thats what you reckon it is, then thats fine by me. i tend to go for this method: 1)tighten 30Nm 2)tighten 60Nm 3)tighten 70-75Nm 4)run the car as you usually would ;-) 5)500mile later tighten back down to 70-75Nm. |
