Subject: Sensor??? Question: G'day there, i hope you can help me? I'm trying to find out what a certain part on the R5 engine is. Its obviously some kind of sensor and is located towards the flywheel end of the cylinder head, inbetween no.1 and no.2 spark plugs. What confuses me is that it is screwed into the head in a dead end hole. Please can you tell me what this component is and what it does. Cheers Scott Answer: its the pinking detector. when you get pinking in the car, it detects the noise and then retards the ignition 6°. |

Subject: Pipes Question: hello wiz just rebuilt engine from scatch and nows its in a ready to go just a few probs on the bottom left of the carb there is two water outlets one is to the turbo where does the other go and where does teh pipe nearest the bulkhead on the water pump go help would be apprieciated also the fuel pump will not work and theres no indicators any ideas ! cheers Answer: from the outlet on the water pump nearest the bulkhead....that goes to the inlet manifold outlet nearest the waterpump. then from the inlet manifold outlet furthest away from the waterpump, that goes to the carb outlet closest to the bulkhead. follow? check the fuel pump relay located top right hand corner of the relay bank, next to the fuse box. you can short this out, so that when you turn the car on, it runs all the time. - some cars even run without the key being in the ignition *lol*. failing that check to see if the pump is actuallly receiving any power. |

Subject: flywheel Question: hey,wiz im having my clutch replaced next week and im wondering if i could get a lightnbalanced flywheel done at same time, my car is totally standard engine wise, are there any benefits from this or disadvantages.thanks Answer: benefits: quicker spool up of engine. easier to rev. releases 'lost' bhp. disadvantages: can cause car to stall more easily at low revs, and loss of small amount of torque from engine. the pro's do outweigh the cons. |

Subject: pinking detector + boost switch Question: what connection should the pre ignition sensor be?? i have seen 2 types, one had an ecu plug and the other had a 3 pin male connection similar to the gear box lead. where should i connect it??? do you have to run the switch in the boost hose as i have got a set of samcos and they dont have an inlet. if so what is the best way of fitting? Answer: both types end up plugging into the ecu. just that one has the three pronged connector along its length. are you missing the piece that goes through the bulkhead into the ecu? - from the 3 prong connector? haynes does show you where it should go! you don't have to run a boost pressure switch. if you did want to run one probably best tap it into the carb top. |

Subject: perc fan Question: the perc fan on my car is missing the outlet to run the hosing. the hard black plastic pipe that points to the carb is there but nothing else. is it from a different model / year / phase. there are also two small wires with female spade connections one is orange and the other is purple are they something to do with the perc fan as they only reach the water pump perc fan area?? Answer: sounds like the wires should connect to the perc fan sensor under the carb. connect them together (carefully) and see what happens! ;-) not sure about your black plastic pipe. i need alittle more detail matey. sorry :-( |

Subject: hoses and pipes Question: Hi this might sound like a stupid question but is there a kind of coloured tape that i can wrap around my hoses etc to make them look better as i aint spending over £500 on samco/silicon hoses. i was tempted to try coloured electrical tape but i thought the heat/temp of my pipes would be too hot. please help as im skint and wanna make my engine bay look a little more respectable. cheers Answer: try some heat resistant spray paint as its a sorta powder coat it should tidy up the look of your pipes . just get one can for now and see if it works .. ive have used it to tidy and make look good after a steam clean and it seams to be ok ..... .... |

Subject: Bottom end work Question: Hi mate - just a quick one! I've got the head off me engine at the moment as I'm replacing one of the piston liners. I'd like to make use of your vast wizdom - any work you recommend I get sorted on the bottom end while the head's off? I keep hearing that some of the fastest 5's (GTTuning in particular) have completely standard bottom ends, so is there really any point uprating anything down there??? Any standard stuff I should replace....timing chain etc... Much appreciated dude! Jon Answer: well, to get the bottom end balanced, you have to take the engine out completely. its worth while checking your bearings for wear. and even renewing your liner seals. it's worth changing the chain tensioner, and the chain at the same time. |

Subject: in car boost Question: what is the best way to use my in car boost? i've got a k-tec racing one with the underbonnet valve so it wont overboost. is it ok to leave it open or should i be controlling it as i go through the gears? Answer: there are many different ways, according to when you come on boost, how much wheelspin you get etc etc. personally i leave it open all the time, but the transmission does take a beating if you do this. whereas constantly fiddling with yer knob, can be time consuming! |

Subject: 17"" and the MOT Question: Hi mate I have just fitted 17"" to my 5GT, as it is quite low on the rear the tyres are close to the arches but not rubbing will this pass an MOT ??? also with the 17"" the front wheels both rub on the inner wing when on full lock, can I sort this with spacers if so what size do I need and is this also a MOT fail. Cheers Mucca Adam ![]() Answer: you can sort the front wheel rubbage with spacers.....although a large lump hammer also does wonders ;-) as long as the body work doesn't foul the wheel i'd imagine that you'll be ok. |

Subject: Foam filters! Question: Hello Mr W, How the smeg do I clean my piper cross induction foam filter. Flibble! Answer: well.......as it's foam, i wouldn't suggest white spirit or carb cleaner, as it'd melt it! i think i used a combination of things. first off i used 'mr muscle' in an attempt to break down the grease and oil etc etc..... then i dunked it in the hottest soapiest water i could find and basically hand washed it. then i repeated two more times, till, when i ran water through it, it was clean....should also SMELL clean too ;-) |

Subject: Fuel Pump Relay Question: The fuel pump relay has just gone on my 5 and Renault recommended replacing both of them. Is it necessary or do I just need to replace the one that sits next to the fuse box? Answer: just replace the one next to the fuse box. as far as im aware the other fuel pump relay controls the auxilliary pump, and is located behind the interior trim next to the drivers side rear passengers leg!- i personally never let the petrol get that low! |

Subject: cup mod Question: hi wizard..just done cup mod on my 5 ...i have a t2-t25 turbo and a in car boost control and a polished and ported head..when my boost control is off it used to run about 12psi and turning it half a turn got me up too 17psi and now when off with cup mod in only runs about 6psi and to get 15psi you have to turn it 1 and a half times round ..is this right if not please help.cheers juggy. Answer: try swapping the two pipes over that connect to the carb top (passenger side), as one has a restrictor in it. which should change the characteristics of the bleed valve! also you may find that the accuator may need turning up to get the required boost . its due to the fact that as it was there would be some boost holding on the wastegate and as the cup mod does away with the hold on boost circuit you will need to compensate for this by increasing the tention on the wastegate (shorten the accuator rod a bit at a time).. |

Subject: oil pressure guage Question: hi, wizard i seem to have a problem because my oil pressure guage is not working neather is my oil level light and the bloody boost guage. can you give me some sudgestions on what the problems are and how i could fix them thanks for the help. Answer: the oil pressure gauges always have problems. try cleaning the connections and crimping the spade connectors alittle more. - to get a good contact. if this don't work the consider an after market gauge! to sort the boost gauge, then check just behind the manifolds, where the boost pressure gauge piping goes into the bulkhead...there should be a 90° bent piece of black plastic, sometimes the pipe comes off there. failing that check to see whether its connected to the carb top. if you are really unlucky, you'll have to take the dash apart and see if the pipe actually at the back of the gauge is still attached! |

Subject: more power please Question: hi wiz ive been told your a realy helpfull guy and i am seaking your help as you can see ive got a renault 25 v6 turbo i was hopping that you could lett me know how i can get the boost to be more than 0.9 bar cos if i try to turn it up above this she will not run nice . she cuts out pops and bangs a generaly sodds around its not the over boost sensor as ive now disconnected it and it does the same if i leave the boost at 0.9 bar she runs absolutly perfect hope you can help ... ive not got alot of hair left its dooing me nut in thanks wizz Answer: ho-ho-ho! i feel my leg being pulled here!, Master, if you don't know how to make the ol' barge go faster, then what chance do i have *lol* but i will make an attempt, bearing in mind i have no idea about the V6 lump.... ok, so popping and banging...potentially not enuff fuel. perhaps you need an injector in the inlet charge, to add extra fuel at higher boost.- can run it off a boost pressure switch, or one of those ERL mappable driver thingies. i suppose the other thing you could do is get some wilder cams made up, some head work done, freer flowing exhaust etc etc, to make the most of your 0.9bar...;-) if all else fails then reach for a dirty bottle of Nitrous Oxide. or if you've got big pockets, goto Prima racing, as i know they've tinkered with the GTA V6 turbo engine before...which i do believe is very similar to your own engine!!! can't you just get summat simple with a C1J turboed lump in instead? |

Subject: Bodykit for Campus Prima Question: Hi there. I have a Standard R5 Campus Prima, which I was to add the GT Turbo Phase I or II bodykit to, but Im unsure as to whether it will fit. I am planning on taking off the bumpers that go all round the car (bout halfway down the doors, you know the ones!) and I'm hoping that my normal car colour will be underneath, allowing me to add the bodykit sude strips etc. Will this be the case, or am I thinking incorrectly?! Please help!! Ben Answer: the car will be the same colour under neath, BUT!- i do believe that the plastic bits at the bottom of the doors are held on by strange rivet affairs that actually poke out of the door itself. so basically you've have to grind them off, and then paint them.- potential £££ nightmare! |

Subject: Which Gearbox? Question: I'm building a 19 turbo at the minute and want to replace the standard JB3 box with something stronger. AFAIK nearly any FWD box will fit. Which is the strongest? My guess would be laguna 2.2TD but would the ratio's be way wrong for a petrol? Thanks Answer: if i were you i'd go for the 1.9td kangoo box... im not sure, but isn't the laguna box, a completely different design? i was under the impression that the JC series geraboxes would fit onto an engine where the JB series used to fit. |

Subject: Sober, Stoned or just plain crazy? Question: In looking through the copious amount of questions and queeries that you deal with I get the distinct impression your a bit mad. Would you like to join my club? I'm going now, got to feltch the dogs!!! Spoons! Answer: well, being as the 'Wizard' is a collective and not just an entity, i'm not sure which one of us is mad! ""The finger"" can point at a few people! Now here's an interesting point....did you mean to type ""fetch"" the dogs......or ""felch"" the dogs? cos obviously, one of the two means that you're a sick individual, the other means you like dogs ;-) and does the spoons thing indicate your favourite sexual position....perhaps with the dogs? :-D |

Subject: sump Question: MR WIZARD CAN YOU PLEASE HELP I AM GOING TO REPLACE MY SUMP SOON BECAUSE OF COROSION AND WAS THINKING ABOUT PUTTING IN A BAFFLED SUMP IN BUT DO NOT KNOW HOW TO MAKE ONE OR WHERE I CAN BUY ONE FROM. AND CAN YOU ALSO TELL ME HOW TO REMOVE THE MAPLIGHT ASSEMBLY FROM THE ROOF. THANKS IN ADVANCE ADEEL GTT Answer: baffled sump can be made, see Kd's pictures on the site...or you can get one off a renault 11 turbo.- or a very early 5 GTT apparently. to remove the interior light....unclip the bit that houses the lenses....so you can get to the bulbs. remove the bulbs and then unclip the bit that sits behind the bulbs. you should then see two torx bolts....undo these and unhook the light assembly from the roof. |

Subject: my limits Question: hi wizz just wondered about the limits to run on a standard fuel pump at what psi would i need to uprate it?? also i have a chargecooler made by pace but it cannot be used with an intercooler so what psi would this be stable ??? 3rdly what kinda fluid is best to use in the charge system? thanks in advance. mr makaveli ![]() Answer: well, the standard pump is rated at 2bar and 60litres an hr. so if you were much over 1 - 1.5 bar, you could be asking for trouble. it's always worthwhile replacing it anyway, as if its been on the car since new, who's to say that the pumping mechanism isnt knackered! i thought that pace would be able to tell you that....although i did think it was originally about 30psi...but they uprated recently...i may be wrong though. well, you can use water...but what id probably use is a water/ methanol mix, as the methanol draws heat from things alot quicker than water does ;-) |
