Subject: gear scrape Question: hi whizz have a small problem when i put the card into 3rd and 5th i get this weird scraping sound coming from the gear stick any ideas it sound like something is turning but,no problems getting it into gear at all cheers whizz Answer: i'd jack the car up and check your linkage ;-) if there's anything rubbing on your shaft, then it could possibly cause a leak, especially if there's summat rubbing aginst the (gear)box too....:-D if its interminttant, and you've got a standard exhaust system on yer car with a middle box on it, then your linkage could be catching on that. |

Subject: Pressure loss after cup mod? Question: Hello again Mr W. I have done the cup mod on my 5. I seem to have lost 3psi out of my max boost now. Is this normal? Andy. Answer: yeah, i've heard that the cup mod does reduce boost slightly, and that you have to turn the actuator u alittle on the turbo to compensate. the benefit is that you have better spool up time on the turbo....apparently. |

Subject: Heater Question: How can I get my heater temperature hot quicker? If I replaced my heater matrix, would a new matrix be more efficient and hence take longer to heat up? Or should I just buy a new BMW that de-ices in 30 secs or summit daft! Answer: the only way to get your incar temp up quicker is to make sure that you run with a thermostat. this heats the engine up quicker and hence you can feel the warmth in your car. if this aint good enough for you, i'd go down yer local BMW dealer tomrrow... :-P |

Subject: cup mod Question: alright whizz can you tell me what the beefits of doing this cup mod and is there any risks involved,i have looked at the master files but iam a bit confused, like the connections on the bottem of the carb from the actuator do i not need this i know you have to remove the pipe on the actuator closes to the passenger conpartment what happens to the other pipe that is blocked on the lobster neck on top of the carb,is it worth the hassle whizz cheers Answer: cup mod: from actuator port closest to front of car...goes to T piece near carb top. T piece then joins to carb top port closest to front of car and port coming out of the side on the carb lower down. block up the unused port on the side of the carb and block up the hole on the back of the turbo elbow. followed it ok? |

Subject: Gearbox (5th gear) Question: I bought the car a few months ago knowin gthat there was no 5th gear. The stick went into gear fine but the engine just reved. When i got the car home a tried 5th again and it went in with a slight crunch. When i loaded the engine it lost the gear. There was no loud noise or anything. Over a period of a few days i was able to use 5th without it slipping out. On my way to the R5 meeting at S.end, i boosted in 5th and it held for about 4 seconds but then the engine freely reved, just as when I got the car. It also jammed in the gear and took a little effort to get it out. I took the end plate off of the gearbox to have a look and there were a few bits of metal lying there. The nut that holds in 5th gears syncro had a metal like washer around it that was rather MASHED and the bits of metal were clearly from this washer. I removed the washer and was able to select 5th and all the other gears. (tested by engaing gear with the engine on and wheel rasied) I think i may be able to repair the 5th gear in situ, but dont know what to replace because i think that when i put it back it will just go again. Also there was slight scoring on the inside on the end plate, probably due to the washer hanging around the nut. Please help! Answer: you need a copy of the blue haynes manual. borrow one off a friend. this has a reletively detailed section on how to take the gearbox apart. this section was subsequently dropped from the book when haynes produced the green book. (pah!) |

Subject: questions Question: Hi wiz, i need to ask a few questions mate... 1) How do u know what psi the cars running at-and what does psi mean?? 2) sometimes when i whack my foot down a massive BANG comes from the engine.i was advised that its because too much boost is goin through a pipe-and i need to unscrew it too allow more boost to flow through. Is this correct....and where is this pipe located? 3) just purchased some r19 phs 2 alloys.i was lookin a sprayin them gold.do you reckon this would look tacky?the cars black. 4) i looked in my coolant tank and there was thick brown muck in there(and i mean thick)-could this be cos i havent driven it 4 about a week-or is there some problem i need to sort out?? i appreciate your help mate........ Answer: 1)look at the boost gauage.- always helps.*lol* if the needle gets to the 'R' of turbo then its standard boost- 7psi. if it gets to the 'o' then its 10psi. at the end of the red hatched area is 14psi. psi means pounds per square inch.- measurement of gas pressure. 2)sounds like someone is feeding you bullsh1t. disconnect one of the two wires that goto the overboost switch on the pipe that goes from the turbo to the intercooler. this may stop your banging! 3) personal opinion: they look sh1t. only cars that should have gold alloys are clio williams and McRae Scooby. on the other hand they look different to the normal silver. 4) flush the coolant out, if it returns then there maybe oil contamination issue here. |

Subject: A-P FAN Question: A-P FAN DOESN'T SEEM TO WORK. TRIED SHORTING ACROSS THE HEAT SHIELD CONTACTS, SPARK BUT NO FAN ACTION. TRIED TO SHORT ACROSS CARB CONTACTS: NO SPARK, NO FAN ACTION. IN-LINE 10A FUSE BLOWN, HAVE REPLACED WITH 15A. I GUESS IT'S EITHER SOLENOID/RELAY, OR THE A-P FAN ITSELF. HOW TO TEST, AND ARE THEY EASY TO FIT (SOLENOID AND A-P FAN)? Answer: change the relay with a new one, or one that is next to the horn...assuming that the horn works ;-) to test that the fan is working, connect a car battery to it.simple. if thats knackered, then dont get yer knickers in a knot, as you 'could' ditch the antiperc fan, and use reflective heat resistant tape to cover the fuel line instead.... but thats only what ive 'heard' other people do ;-) |
