Subject: soft pedal conversion

Question:
Hi, instead of buying the soft pedal conversion kit, could it be possible to weld a longer bracket on the exsisting one, if so, how much longer should it be. thanks

Answer:
I think you'll find you could probably bolt a piece on, instead of weld it ;-)
i have never compared the two arms next to each other. probably best to post on the board....some saddo probably has a normal and an extended one hung up on his/her wall or summat.

Subject: Smoke!!

Question:
I'm getting puffs of blue smoke but not all the time. Sometimes if I'm sat in traffic then pull away I get a big puff of smoke. Does this mean my turbo is on the way out or something else. Please help!!

Answer:
stop smoking da REEFER! puffs of smoke are not uncommon when pulling away from the lights, as the G force on the lungs when driving a 5 are prone to force air out of the body! aiiii! ;-)

could be your valve stem seals......take off your rocker cover and have a look 'inside' the springs, if they are all over the place then they need replacing. it could be you turbo, check what happens on overrun- they like to smoke when they are knackered. try wobbling the turbo shaft too- alot of play means it fecked.

Subject: fan not kicking in

Question:
Hi mate

replaced my radiator today with a copper core, and also put on a low temp fan switch, and low temp thermostat (It didn't even have one at all before) with a small hole drilled in it.

Ran for about 10 mins and the guage went past 3/4 without the fan kickin in. My mate took lid off header tank and water went everywhere (like it was boiling!)

The fan still works cos I touched the fan wires and it started.

Please help, one thing after another at the mo

Answer:
sounds like the relay infront of the alternator is knackered. replace it and you probs should magically disappear! - just like my VD problem! *lol*

Subject: Odds

Question:
Bonjour Wiz ...

Just a few silly Q's to ask - as i'm new to the R5 game ...

1) What pipes run off the turbo - and where do they go to .. ??

2) I have one small blue & 2 black pipes which goes from the bulk head to the engine bay - what do you think these could be / where do they go .. ??

3) There is a thermostat looking thing with two spade terminals on the carb body. There are no wires connected - what could this be .. ??

If you can help me in anyway - that'll be great ta.

Cheers wiz ..

Answer:
1)a)air inlet for turbo...usually attached to filter.
b)exhaust outlet...usually attached to elbow.
c)oil feed in....usually metal pipe ontop of turbo 'core'
d)oil out...usually a black pipe that gets split every few months- under the turbo!!!
e) water in....
f) water out...

simple huh?
2) these sound like incar bleed pipes to me... probably gonna connnect to the actuator.
3) this is the anti perc fan sensor (one of them) should connect in parallel to the sensor over the turbo...

all in all, its probably best to compare you car with someone elses, as its rather hard to explain, pipes and stuff! ;-)

Subject: sunroof

Question:
just wondering how easy would it b to put a clio electric sunroof in a 5?

Answer:
Probably about as easy as sticking cucumber up my ar*e.

points you need to consider:
size of hole.
size of unit entering hole. ;-)
where take electrics from....if needed.

sounds a nightmare job to me.

Subject: boost gauge???

Question:
Hello mate.

I've just taken the dash clocks out and i noticed that the nipple thing where the pipe connects on the back of the boost gauge is blocked off(never been drilled out). However the boost gauge still works. What controls the gauge because the car is running standard boost but the gauge registers into the red (is this normal?). Are there any tests I can carry out to the gauge/sender?

Cheers boss!

Answer:
sounds like the bit that isn't drilled out might be a restrictor. check closely to see if there is a small hole in the centre of it.

Subject: Indicators..

Question:
Hey Wiz.

Hmm, I've got a bit of a problem that I can't really get to the bottom of.. When I use the indicators for more than a few seconds I get a scary bzzzz noise from the glovebox area, my battery warning light flashes, and my hazard flasher fuse (is that meant to be a 10A btw??) blows.. After that the indicators don't work at all.

If I change the fuse sometimes the car is ok for a 100 miles or so, other times it
blows the second I use the indicators.

Its got me a bit stumped boss!!

Any ideas?

Answer:
sounds like summat is shorting out at the front of the car. take the bumper off and check all the connections to the lights etc etc. sounds very odd to me!

Subject: Cr@p in header tank

Question:
Hi Wiz

I've been getting a load of dirty water in my header tank, and this slimy stuff. My car over heated for about 1 hour a few weeks back but that’s fixed now (fan didn’t kick in), could it be all the cr@p off my hoses and my rad floating round the system due to it over heating for a while???? The car's water temp is normal now

Do you think a good flush out will get rid of it?

Thanx.... AK

Answer:
try the flush. costs feck all. if it sorts it - no probs ;-)

Answer:
what boost are you running?- how do you know its leaking? more likely to be a sticking piston....squirt with WD40...this'll sort it!

sounds like you have disconnected summat ! - have a look round the area you were disconnecting..this may reveal more!

Subject: Adjustable Boost

Question:
I recently bought incar adjustable boost for my car and it is three way
i have the two pipes connected to the pipe from the carb top t the acuator front using t-pieces where does the middle pipe go i have it connected to the pipe where the pipe off the dump valve goes to but when the bleed valves open the dump valve sounds s*** ! and my car does not seem to boost anymore

Answer:
you've connected it up wrong!
one end of the bleed valve goes to the actuator port.
the other end of the bleed valve goes to the carb top.
the middle one goes no-where.....but you must feed it into the engine bay...so the waste gas is bled away from the passenger compartment.

Subject: Perk fan solenoid + overboost switch

Question:
Wiz,
How easy would it be to remove the perk fan solenoid from the car, or should I say the loom that connects to the bottom of it. Can it be cut back or can it be stripped out completely ??

Same question for the overboost switch connectors / wiring.

Cheers

Answer:
i'd imaging you can trace it back to the main part of the loom at the front of the block and cut it out. But for gods sake, make sure you cover the ends of the wires, else they'll short out.

same goes for the overboost wiring.

Subject: Water level indicator

Question:
Hello Mr W.

As I see it, there is no coolant level indicator on the 5 turbo. Am I correct in saying this?
If so, do you know of anyone that has fitted one to thier car and how they did it or where they got it from?

Thanks.

Mad Andy.

Answer:
there is no coolant level indicator on the 5 turbo.
although on ph1's there was a screen washer fluid level indicator. Which i spose could be adapted to fit a expansion bottle... whether the ph2 has the necessary wiring to fit one is anyones guess.

Subject: IN CAR BOOST

Question:
I have a in car boost kit it hasa red anodised screw it has two pipes coming out one straight out of the back and one underneath where do these go?? and the other piece of it goes to the inlet elbow carb top it has a 3 way box t-piece one side goes to the carb where does the middle and the left pipes go??

Answer:
on the 3 way t piece.
one side goes to the actuator port closest to the front of the car.
the other goes to the carb top.
the middle one goes to the incar bleed valve.

on the incar bleed valve, one goes to the t piece. the other is the waste vent pipe...which need to be led back into the engine bay, and left open to air!

Subject: central locking

Question:
how do you connect the central locking motor to the lock to make it lock and unlock?? where does the rod coming from the door pin go and how does it connect??

Answer:
the lock unit on the central locking cars always have the solenoid with it! are you adding an after market one?- or replacing them?

the rod from the door pin, connects straight into the top of the solenoid. it has a green connector thingy on top. and a corrigated rubber boot over it.

the actual solenoid mechanism fits inbetween a 'Y' shaped piece on the back of the lock unit. with the mech sitting between the forks of the 'Y'..

Subject: Water pipes expanding

Question:
What would you say the problem is?
I have only just got my 5 on the road after endless amounts of welding but I seem to have have a problem with the cooling. I can druive the car for about 5 minutes and if I check the water pipes after that thay all expand and looks like they are going to burst.
As far as i can see it could be two things. 1: The water tank cap isn't breathing air if it is supposed to or
2: The air is getting into the water through the head gasket?
Any ideas?

Answer:
take off the expansion tank cap...it should be blue on a ph2.
then start the car.
if the h/g has gone then the water will be pushed out of the bottle, or bubbles with appear from the bottom of the expansion tank.

could be a blocked rad...or knackered thermostat...check these too.

Subject: Electric staring probs

Question:
I can start my car on a full battery but drive it for 20 minutes and it runs fine but when i turn it off and try to start it again the battery is dead.
I suppose it could be that i am not getting a decent enough return on the alternator but all the wires are connected as far as i know and this never used to be the case?

Answer:
BUY A VOLTMETER.

start the car.

measure the output across the terminals of the alternator. it should read between 13.5-14.5 volt approx.
if this is ok, then check across the terminals of the battery. if there is a substantial loss in voltage then you either:
a) need a new battery cos its fecked.
b) you got a major earthing problem.- check the starter motor connections....as these run real close to the exhhaust pipe...if u catch my drift.

Subject: boost

Question:
hi there iv recently fitted an incar boost (3 prongs le mans) ok and wen the boost is turned down the car dosn't seem to go anywhere but wen ya turn it up it reads 14 psi can is this a prob and can i fit a under car bleed valve and can you tell me how to fit it

Answer:
what exactly are you trying to tell me?
that when you turn the in car bleed valve off, you have low boost? and when you turn it up, you get high boost?- cos i REALLY thought that this is what it was supposed to do......as for an under car bleed valve...well....well, well, well....id imagine you'd have alot of probs trying to adjust the boost settings if it were under the car *lol*
you can fit an under bonnet bleed valve as well if you like to limit the max boost if you want. you just plug it into the pipe that comes off the carb top. left port to carb, right port to actuator, middle port to incar bleed valve. sorted ;-)
