Subject: stalling at idle Question: every time i stop the car it konks out. it idle irratically then dies even when hot. it misfires too. the plugs and leads are fine so i think its a fuel problem. i have to drive about with the choke on to stop it dying. help needed big time!!!!!! Answer: from the drivers side of the car, look at the carb. take the very large brass screw (idle jet)out of the carb. then take it apart and clean it thoroughly. you may have to reseal it with PTFE tape, if the rubber O ring has perished. you may have also lost yer mixture screw which also causes problems. look at haynes to see where it is. |

Subject: T3 Question: Hello all I was thinking about getting a new turbo and i have spoted something on e-bay it is a t3 garret of i think lotus esprit but not sure would i be able to get it to fit my renualt This turbo is of the type that can be rotated to align the pipes to where you want them, and at the moment it is as it should be for a esprit which is I think mounted almost upside down. So you may find that you need to undo the 6 bolts on both the housing and twist around. Answer: the big problem is fitting the exhaust elbow to it. can it or will it fit?- also how does it fit onto the manifold?- 4 bolt T2 type or 4 bolt t3 type?- or even a weirder one? all questions that need answering. Anyway- do you REALLY want to fit a turbo off a METRO TURBO to your car (its the same!) *roflol* |

Subject: Clio 16v/Williams shocks Question: I know that clio shocks fit the 5 and as its lowered -40mm i thought due to shorter travel they would offer a better ride. Do the front ones fit and are the williams any different/better? I have heard that Extra van shocks work well as they are designed for load carrying which is what the rear is doing when lowered? Thanks Wiz Answer: not sure about the front ones!- at all! although i do know that the extra rears are worth having. - especially for lugging those overweight wolverhampton women around ;-) |

Subject: missing pipes Question: dear wiz my inlet manifold has no water pipes connected to it is this ok or would you replace missing pipes as it seems to hold back when accelerating. Answer: i would replace them and replumb them back into the carb base heating system. It could cause slight fuelling problems without them, cos the water actaully heats the manifold up and helps vapourise the fuel droplets! |

Subject: Gasket or seal Question: Hi Wiz, Should there be a gasket/Seal between the distributor and the engine block? Bought new upper and lower gasket sets did not seem to be one supplied in either set. Cheers. Answer: I've never seen one. Although if there was originally one it'd probably have flaked away to nothing by now. I wouldn't get to worried about it. |

Subject: Accelerator pump? Question: Hulloo, Now and again, usually after the car has been running for a while if i jab the throttle it stuttuers and struggles to pick the revs up. What should i try first to fix the problem? Do you think it's just a sticky accelerator pump or maybe something else. Thanks for taking the time to answer. I did look for similar questions but wanted to be sure. Answer: make sure the accelerator pump moves freely. if it doesnt remove it from the carb and have a good clean ;-) |

Subject: fitting gtt into Question: ello wizza can i fit a 5gtt engine into a clio phase2 99? Answer: i dont see why not. some of them run a similar gearbox as the GTT, and i bet there is more room under the bonnet tha a GTT. Whether the subframe would cause problems is another matter, as all new renaults 'hang' the engine from the suspension turrets. Also, have you figured out whether you'd have problems with the speedo cable? It's a big job...maybe worth while talking to people who have done the conversion before. eg: Torsion Tuning. |

Subject: SHIT HAPPENS! Question: Hi, there seems to be water leaking (spiting) from where the engine exhaust manifold joins to the turbocharger! it also looks like there's a slight hint of blue smoke comming out of the exhaust(sometimes). Do you think that both problems are turbo(starting to get shagged) related, or is the water leaking problem because the head gastket is also on its way out? I hope that both problems are related to the turbo, but i have a ""shit happens"" feeling that it probably isn't. PLEASE HELP me clarify this shitty situation. Cheers, chris(r5turbonutta) Answer: are you TOTALLY sure that the spitting water isn't actually coming from the little metal end piece that is bolted to the end of the head? as it is right next to the turbo-manifold join! could be that the gasket is failing there and spitting water onto the manifold. If however it is the manifold throwing water out, then you got serious probs! defo sounds like a headgasket problem!- esp coupled with smokey exhaust! |

Subject: no oil Question: Hi wiz, I've noticed that there is no oil being pumped up to the rocker cover, what could be causing this, I got a landrover dicovery oil cooler, can it be fitted to the car and is it worth it, cheers. Answer: you could have no oil pressure perhaps? :-( are you really sure about this?- have you started the car with no rocker cover on?- it should spurt out! the oilway that feeds the rockers is at the front left of the head- closest to the intercooler. If 'someone' has messed up the head gasket change it can cause this to not get any oil. If it has been blocked up with cr@p then try an engine flush. failing that your oil pump could be screwed. I've never seen a landrover oil cooler...but i'd imaging with a little 'magic dust' it'd be made to fit ;-) |

Subject: rad size Question: I'm going to make a alloy rad for my car, is there a limit on size, because people in my works say the water pump won't be up for the job, or is there a rad from another car that i can put in my car, or a bigger water pump that will fit, thanks. Answer: try a clio diesel rad. the other thing is how are you going to cool the oil?- have you got a seperate oil cooler?- as the clio rad doesn't have the oil cooler option in it! im not sure about the w/pump not being up for the job. sounds like the peeps at your workplace are a little more clued up than me! :-S |

Subject: Cylinder heads Question: Hi Wiz, I have a spare ph 1 cylinder head that I was thinking of preparing as a spare for my ph 2 GTT. It doesn't have provision for a knock sensor. Can I just remove the knock sensor lead from my ph 2 to run this head? Are there any other differences between the ph 1 & 2 heads? Cheers, Alex. Answer: yes you can run without the knock sensor. the ph 1 head, was originally supposed to run without any valve stem seals. Hence where the springs sit on a ph 1 head is infact different to where the spring sits on a ph 2 head. ph1 springs sits in a 'cup'...ph2 sits on a 'pedestal'... hope this helps. :-P |

Subject: OIL BURNING/CARB. PROBLEM Question: 1)WHEN CAR WORKS AT1000R.P.M WHITE SMOKE COMES OUT FROM THE EXHAUST.AT 1200 1500 R.P.M. THE SMOKE STOPS!!! 2)I REPAIR MY CARB.EVERYTHING SEEMS TO BE O.K. BUT AFTER A WHILE EVERYTHING TURNS SMOKY INSIDE (CARB. SPARKPLUGS)AND CONSUMES A LOT OF PETROL.(THE CARB IS IN NORMAL CONDITION) Answer: ok.... does the smoke stop when the car is hot? and been taken for a 'run' ;-) if so it's condensation in the exhaust! what does the 'smoke' smell of? fuel perhaps? cos it could be that the two are linked! excess fuel can cause 'whitish' looking smoke. what jets have you got inside the carb?- if they are 'normal' i.e standard jets then , have you tried swapping your carb with someone elses? just to see! could be several problems occuring!- let me know! |

Subject: leaking boost Question: Recently I have started hearing a hiss whilst on boost (I am losing boost, the gauge doesnt rise as quick or get to the top). I have cheked all the hoses that go into the carb, on the dump valve, they are ok. There is a threaded hole in 1 of the pipes that goes to the actuator, but I cant remeber if this was exposed prior to the problem. Any help would be great!! Cheers Arran Answer: is the threaded hole on the pipe that goes from the turbo to the intercooler? If it is, then the overboost sensor should screw into it! this should most definately not be open to the air!!!- Boost will come 'pouring' out! |

Subject: intercooler Question: Hi mr Wiz, I've read lots of things about strapping up the intercooler and flowing it. Do they mean glueing the flap in it to the open position all the time or is this something different?? Cheers. NIck Answer: to strap and flow the intercooler you need to take the top of the intercooler off. cut the thermostat off. get the flap to stay in the 'up' (open) position through means of a screw and sealant. then seal the unit shut, recrimp the edges down, and then with a very large jubilee clip tighten the ends of the whole unit down! |

Subject: Someone nicked my thermostat Question: Hi Mr Wiz I just brought a g reg r5 gtt for £300 (bargain!) but the radiator is fecked so I am in the process of changing it. However, I took it off and there is no thermostat there, why is this and is it ok just to put one of those low temp ones in? Also what are the benefits of external oil coolers and are they worth £90 or however much they are? Answer: people run with no thermostat in summer months, but put them back in for winter, so you can get incar heating! the added benefit of removing the thermostat is to disguise/cover up a shagged radiator, as everything runs alot cooler when it's out! external oil coolers 'help' cos they seperate the temperature of the water and the temperature of the oil. so they help by not letting the water get too hot too quickly. on the down side they dont heat the oil up too quick, unless you get a thermostatically controlled one, that only cools the oil once its reached its opperating temp. if you're getting a new rad, i'd save yer pennies, for summat more important. |

Subject: boot lock Question: ive recently hit a lamp post (dont ask) and cracked the back bumper and the bit of plastic at the bottom of the boot, with the lock in it. is it possible to get the lock barrel out easily or do i need to get a new strip and lock? Answer: you can get the lock out, by unscrewing the plastic lip at the bottom of the tailgate. Open the boot and look for the holes containing the torx screws. hell, you even follow MR HAYNES advice if you really wanted to *lol*. The lock then just pushes out. |

Subject: rear wheel drive a gt turbo shell Question: i've had to sell all the engine/running gear off my turbo (needed money new house !!!!) now i'm left with a rolling shell which i'm going to strip every thing out of i what to build a rwd 5 for the road/track days any idea's???? Answer: you could go the same route that EuroParts did, by taking a complete subframe/engine/wishbones/steering rack and plonk that in the boot. Weld the rack so it dont move. cut big hole in the floor (after removing fuel tank) weld H section beam into floor/chassis. bolt subframe to it, then.. weld two suspansion towers to the rear (alot more involved than you may think). then you gotta think about exhaust/ gear linkage/water hosing/ clutch....and voila.....Ians your mothers brother ;-) |

Subject: Question: Wiz, my batt light comes on every now and again and stays on for ten mins or so? The alt and battery are new and i've tested the circuit for continuity and its fine? all the fuses are mint? Any ideas? Also my car only does 45 miles to a tenner??!! not pastin' it!! whats all that about?? It runs alright, few back fires high up the rev range but other than that seems alright!! Just Expensive to fuel!!! What d'ya reckon? cheers!! Answer: try cleaning the brown plug that connects to the top of the alternator. i.e the regulator plug. crimp it together a bit if need be! failing that, clean the ring connectors attched to the alternator, they could be corroded. then clean the starter motor connections, as the alternator connects straight to this first before going to the battery. then clean the battery terminals too!!!! my car does 40-50 to a tenner if im lucky! - i know what carb jets im running! do you? start messing with them jets and you are DOOMED i tell you!- DOOOOMED! quickest way to empty the pocket of money!- a 150 main jet *lol* |

Subject: Carbs Question: Now that Solex are not making the DIS 32's any more what are the options ?? [I dont think they are making the idle jets either, cant get a new one from Renault or Southern Carbs] I think spending money on second hand ""reconditioned"" ones is a waste of time & a rip off, one tuner quoted me £200 ish for one, they where about £240 for a brand new one when they where available, they know they have got us by the short and curlies. A few years down the line there may not be any 2nd hand ones left, then what ?? Are there any companies that offer an affordable fuel injection option ?? [I saw a 4 way injection manifold somewhere on the site] Answer: i take it you haven't tried webcon, or fuel parts (Redditch), for replacement bits..... in a few years time, you may realise that tuners/ renault get their parts from somewhere, it's just a matter of finding out where you can get them new/reconned properly ;-) there are several fuel injection systems out there. all are fairly pricey.:-( |

Currently i've lowered about -50mm en in the fornt the adjustable bump is at its lowest in order to get some comfort. A the rear end also -50mm and i've turned the knobs 10 clicks (from 42 available) agaian to get a bit of comfort. I am only experiencing some sort of very slight knocking sound. If I take big bumps it doesn't do this only with very small irregularities. For instanhce when accelerating you hear the sound. s this normal with GAZ coilovers?
