Subject: Blown blower!

Question:
Hi wiz,

My turbo has recently let go on me! (loadsa oil in breather system)!after checking oil level and cruising home (bout a mile) i noticed that under slightest boost there was noise! Sounds like turbo bearing but sounded like it was coming from other side (cant be sure)!? want to know if there could be other engine damage and if any way i can find out easily??? There is no noise at idle, only under load/boost!

Much appriciated
Steve

Answer:
I expect the noise is the turbo if it is not there at idle but it is possible that bits of the blades have come off and are in your engine. Get a compression test done to make sure all the cylinders are still ok.

Subject: heater relocation tw@ about

Question:
hi wiz, im in the ,middle of doing the heater/stereo swap mod and was using ur step by step guide that you put on here before, but im now stuck big time and have worn a bald patch on my head by rubbing it too many times. i have got everything where it shud be,the heater cables ive re-routed and they just to say reach but the 2 wire pulleys for the heat/direction wont reach, they are a good couple of inches too short and i cant really re-route them cos they dont bend very well and i cant drill a hole for them b`cos its metal plate and my ickle dremel aint powerful enough.

hope you can help me mr wiz

p.s do you look like gandalf from lord of the rings? wink

batman

Answer:
By good routing one cable should just reach and the other needs to be changed for a longer one from another car.

My picture is up on this site so you should know that Gandalf does look a little like me!

Subject: two small wires

Question:
Should either of the two small wires that go to the top of the alt have any current coming from them when the ignition is on?

mine haven't!

if they are meant to have any current going to them, any ideas what could prevent this?

cheers

Answer:
These wires are for the warning light and exciter circuit of the alternator. As long as your warning light in the dash works properly then they are fine.

Subject: make it faster

Question:
Hi wiz, Ive had my 5 turbo for about 2 weeks, its got a dumpvalve, exhaust system, and cone filter, i want to make it faster without breaking the bank? some people tell me to have a bleed valve fitted is this the best way forward?
Thanx wiz. David Bradbury

Answer:
I wouldn't fit a bleed valve unless you get an in car kit with the max boost preset. This will stop you using too much boost and blowing the car up.

A cheaper (free) way to up the boost is to shorten the actuator arm to increase the boost, a turn or two at a time.

With standard carb jets i would not increase the boost past the start of the red area on the boost gauge.

Subject: Water pump

Question:
My bearings in my pully arm are in bad shape do you think it is making the car run hotter than norn? i.e not pumping the water around at normal speed so not cooling as fast.
thats all thats left is the pump i have cheaked every thing else and it still runs hotter than it did all last year

Answer:
The impellor from the pump may be broken if the bearings are damaged also it may cause a little water loss which in turn will add air into your system.
Get a new water pump as soon as possible.

Subject: Cup Mod, breather hoses and perc fan

Question:
hi can u tell me what the cup mod is again why its done and how do i do it. Also i want to remove all my breather hoses and use crankcase breathers, do i have to put a valve in the carb or something. Could u please explain what i need to do to do it. And last of all i want to remove the perc fan completly, is there anything i need to know or is it a case of just unbolting it and throwing it away. Cheers Graham.

Answer:
cup mod is supposed to help turbo spool up time, as well as removing a sh1t load of pipes! to do it all you gotto do, is remove the metal pipe from the turbo elbow, follow the pipe back to the carb and disconnect it there too, as well as the pipe to the actuator port closest to the passenger compartment (assuming you got a twin port actuator). then block up carb top hole, and exhaust elbow hole!

unbolt the antiperc fan, via the two bolts under the o/s wing. then sell it. whilst you are at it, you might as well ditch the two sensors that run it...you wouldn't want them to short out and fry your wiring would you ;-)

Subject: anti perc fan!/ ecu!/ discs n alloys!

Question:
hi wiz, hope you can help with a couple of enquirys please.
firstly-can you fit an anti perc fan to a phase 1, if so how?
secondly-can you move the ecu to somewhere cooler on the phase 1 also?
thirdly-whats the biggest size disc i can put behind 15""alloys?
ok, 3 questions, sorry thanks for the wiring dilema i had and all done thanks mate.
all the best
julz

ps still the best tenna ive spent!!

Answer:
The anti perc fan can be fitted but it will need either a proper phase 2 wiring loom fitting to the car or a lot of wiring added. The rest of the parts are simple enough to fit but you will also need to fit phase 2 intercooler to carb hose for the connection.

The ignition module can be moved to the other side of the bulkhead using the bracket and wiring extension from a phase 2.

285mm discs are about the biggest you can fit behind 15's but they can cause the caliper to rub on some types of wheels.

Subject: Oil pump

Question:
Hi Wiz,

Just rebuilding my spare engine. Got a brand new gear type oil pump. When I offer the pump up to the engine, the dowel that locates the pump does not fit the new pump nice & snug. I can move it side to side about 1mm. The old pump sits nice & tight. Is this new pump OK like this? (Was supplied by a 5 Turbo tuner)

Also, I can rock the pump as if the face which seals to the block is warped. I can slip a 0.1mm feeler gauge under one side! Surely this is not good? Wouldn't I loose oil pressure as the oil could come out between the block & pump body? I haven't tightened the pump mounting bolts yet but do you think this would close the gap or could I put a thin paper gasket on?

Cheers Wiz. Sorry, went on a bit!

Answer:
I would go straight back to who you bought it from and speak to them as it sounds wrong to me!

Subject: Small end barings

Question:
Wiz,
after bad noises coming from the engine I popped into a garage to be told my small end bearings were going. Will this involve an engine rebuild or can I avoid such a costly solution?

Cheers.

Answer:
IF it is small ends then you will need to take the sump and head off to get the pistons/rods out to change the bearings.

However, i have never had a problem with just small end bearings so i would go elseware (a tuner?) for a second opinion before starting work.

Subject: Jet wash

Question:
Hi wiz, I'm spending a bit of dough under the bonnet and want to jet wash and degrease the engine bay before I put the new stuff in, Is that ok to do? if so is there anythings I should be carefull of or even cover up? If not what is the best way to clean it up. Thanks.

Answer:
The best way to clean the engine is with something like ""Gunk"" or another proper engine cleaner. These recommend washing off after use but i don't think they require jet washing.

If you do jetwash then make sure the air filter is covered and any breather filters etc are also covered.

Subject: BOOST

Question:
HI WIZ JUST GOT A GT TURBO AND I DONT NO TO MUCH ABOUT THEM. IVE CAUGHT THE BLEED VALVE WHILE DOIN SOME WORK ON THE ENGINE AND I DONT KNOW HOW TO RESET IT COULD THIS CAUSE ME ANY PROBLEMS IF NOT SET RIGHT.

Answer:
I don't know the spec of your car so i can't say how much boost to run. Close the valve completely for safety as too much boost will blow the head gasket or worse.
Get back to me with your spec for more help.

Subject: head removal

Question:
the head gasket blew last week i followed the haynes manual and still i cannot move it could it have got so warm that the gasket is sticking the head to the block or could i have just missed something out?

Answer:
Assuming that you are leaving the manifolds on the head, Make sure you have removed things like the exhaust and lower rad hose etc. Leave the front head bolt in the hole finger tight and twist the head. If you can't do it by hand then use a rubber mallet.

Subject: DUMP VALVES

Question:
HELLO ALL
I RECENTLY BOUGHT A PHASE 2 TURBO WITH HAD A GRP A DUMP VALVE BUT I HAVE ANOTHER BRAND NEW DUMP VALVE I HAVE SEEN A FEW CARS WITH TWIN DUMP VALVES WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO FIT TWO

Answer:
You can fit a second dump valve wherever you like in the system but some people think it is best used just before the intercooler and others as near to the carb as possible.
Make your mind up where you want it and then fit a ""T"" piece in the pipe. If you want it in the main boost hose along with the other one then try someone like K-Tec or BB Tuning for a twin ""T"" piece.
With regards to the small pipe then just ""T"" it from the first one.

Subject: water temp warning light

Question:
Hi Wiz,

Sometimes, the warning light of my water temperature goes on. Sometimes it does this when the engine is completely cold, sometimes in mid temperature readings on the temperature gauge. After a while it is gone again, sometimes very quick sometimes it takes alittle bit longer. My water is NOT running too hot, thats for sure. I already tried to clean the contacts near the waterpump. But to no avail. Do you have any suggestions?

Answer:
Might be wiring but if connections are ok then i would suggest a new sender on the water pump.

Subject: Rebuilt

Question:
Have recently rebuilt my gtturbo, new sparks, new HTs, all valves are corectly gapped, starter is fine. it wants to to go it chugs and chugs but wont turn all the way. any ideas.

Answer:
This could be a number of things.
Did you remove the distributor drive when the engine was rebuilt? If so then this is the most likely candidate.

If not then it could be down to a dodgy timing sensor or ignition module.

Subject: Air filter

Question:
I have a green cotton cone. Now what i would like to do is move the cone some where else in the engne bay so it gets colder air and so the colder air gets forced onto the cone. Is it ok to move the cone and extend the pipe it goes on to.
The air will have longer to travel down the pipe will it all work ok.

I would like to put it at the front of the car near the bumper some where so air coming into one of my many intakes cut in to my bumper hits the cone.

Answer:
its ok to extend the pipe and move the filter to where ever you want to.
what else do you want me to say!:-P

Subject: Chrage cooler or intercooler?

Question:
I'll soon be getting a GTT lump put in my Clio 16v and im wondering which is better a chargecooler or a large intercooler. Can you run both? (samller I/cooler of course)

if these are daft questions , sorry i know very little about GTT's

Answer:
this question has caused many ""heated"" debates in the club! - hahaha!
run whatever you can afford to run! run both if you want to! tuners always have their little favourite way of getting cool induction temps. some say chargecoolers, some say large intercooler with water spray. both have pros and cons....probably time to do some research ;-)

i.e there is no set answer on this one! - sorry!

Subject: Fuel Problem (???)

Question:
Greetings Wiz,

After nearly 5 weeks of my gorgeous Renault sitting on my drive, & me relying on lifts, walking and borrowing the old dears car, things have come to a head.

Now then, I'll go back to the start.

'Bout 5 weeks ago I ran out of petrol on the way to work. Put about 3 cannisters in her to get her to 1/4 tank, but on the way home it was bunny hopping & backfiring, then it died. Being the lazy sod I am, I did nothing except get angry!

It was about 3 weeks ago that I started her for the 1st time and took it for a spin and it did the same. Have changed the timing sensor, but no joy. Do you think it is worth changing the fuel filter as it could be that it full of cack? And also removing the fuel pipe from the carb (whichever one that is) and see what happens? The car starts first time and runs absolutely lovely, it's only when I move that it bunny hops and the rev counter dies, so I've only been about 100 yards in 5 weeks! No fun!

I've had several different answers from people, ECU, Coil etc etc so I'm even thinking about just sacking this engine off and buying a new one as I'm pretty frustrated!

Cheers
Tud

Answer:
take you filter off, and replace it. then take you carb off, and clean the fecker out. especially the big brass screw on the drivers side of the carb!- ie the idle jet!..also the main jet need cleaning too...
then take a small spade, smack it around yer head a few times..repeating the words "" i'll not be so stupid nxt time, cos running out of fuel in a GTT mean certain grief"" ;-)
glad to of helped :-P

Subject: Injector kit

Question:
I've been look at an injector kit from BB they have a 4 injector option would this be staged so the carb works on it's own up to average boost levels (15psi say)then the first two injectors kick in then the next 2. Is it worth the expense, on a 250bhp + engine?

Answer:
erm, perhaps it's time to call BB and actually ask them! I know they work off a pressure operated solenoid, so i'd imaging it'd be fairly easy to use two solenoids, and actaully have two sets of jets coming in at seperate times. whether its worth it is up to you....just look at what everyone else with big bhp is running...then you'll get a 'clearer' picture ;-)

Subject: smaller thrust bearing turbo or larger roller bearing one?

Question:
It's a big dilema, i know bigger turbos have more lag but do the roller bearing turbos really compensate for this, or would i be better of with a smaller thrust type?

Answer:
depends on what other engine mods you've got. depends on what size exhaust housing the RB turbo has got. the thrust type is easier to repair if it goes wrong, the RB is quite hard to repair, dur to Garrett being a little frugal with the repair kits (allegedly).
a big can of worms is trying to open here....

Answer:
erm, when you changed the oil, did you use oil flush too? did you reprime the oil system by taking off the kinglead and turning over the car till the oil reached the turbo?....you could well of killed yer turbo..:-( try the shaft wobble test first, to see if it's totalled.

Subject: CLIO 16V INJECTION

Question:
hi wiz,
before my gtt i had a 16v which im now breaking what will i need to put the injection on the gtt in addition to the parts i have got off the clio?

cheers red face)

Answer:
PVA glue, toilet rolls, some sticky backed plastic.- maybe even some washing up bottles.

sounds a really easy job to me! - NOT!

what a feckin nightmare!

probably ask one of the tuners who's dealt with turboed clios, to see what the limitations of the clio injection system is!

i know some of our foreign friends have done similar stuff...ask some of the guys from Holland.- and whilst you're at it, get em to send over some dirty hooker....im gaggin..;-)
