Subject: more bhp

Question:
i asked u last week what bhp my gtt was running [ u said about 150-160 bhp ]
this is what i have done, hybrid set at 18 psi, pace intercoler, magnex exhaust and baileys dump valve.
what do i do now to make it around 200 bhp?

Answer:
I would expect you to raise the boost to at least 22-25psi, rejet/rebuild carb to group A, probably better head gasket and bolts, maybe headwork/cam, more than likely better fuel pump, etc etc etc.

There is a big jump in work required over about 160bhp to get gains. This also relates to big money and less reliability.

Subject: in car boost

Question:
i bought a forge(three way one) in car boost control recently. once opening the package all i found was the boost control nothing else? how do i hook it up and how much pipe and what diameter will i need to run it to the dash? also bought a boost guage as well does that get connected up through the boost control or seperate??

Answer:
for safety sake, get 3 metres of 5 mm ID bore tubing.
connect the tubing as follows, assuming you have a twin pipe actuator.
From the actuator port closest to the front of the car, straight through to the left hand 'arm' of the bleed valve. Then the black pipe you just disconnected from the actuator, follow up towards the carb top. diconnect from black T piece, and put more silcone tubing onto this and feed through to right hand 'arm' of bleed valve. the centre 'arm' of the bleed valve if the waste pipe- vent this back into the engine bay. the boost gauge is separately connected....if it has negative readings too, just connect to the same pipe that runs to the ignition unit and also the dumpvalve! aiiiii!

Subject: gt cup mod

Question:
i.ve heard of something called a gt cup mod?? it supposed to make the car more responsive and tidy the engine bay. if this is true how is it done as my engine bay looks like a spegetti junction!!!!

Answer:
1) Remove the metal pipe from the turbo elbow and block the hole (M10 or M12 can't remember which)

2) Follow that pipe up to the carb top, remove it and block the hole left in the carb top.

3) Remove the rearmost pipe from the actuator to the carb top leaving the actuator to fresh air.

4) Check i haven't missed anything! Basically this removes the overboost circuit from the exhaust actuator and carb leaving only the boost control circuit. This may leave you with less boost than before but this can be rectified by shortening the actuator arm until boost is recovered.

Subject: Want to fit a newer/better engine in my 5 1.4 gtl

Question:
I was thinking either clio 1.4 16v engine or the 1.7 gte engine, what you think would be the best?
I know ill need the whole engine, gearbox, ecu and fuel lines. what else wiz?
I really need to do this conversion as 1 my engine is crap and needs changed anyway and 2 i need more power and reliablility.
Thanks kindly
Gareth

Answer:
Either conversion will really effect insurance so check that first as the car is classed as modified after an engine swop.

If insurance is still cheaper than buying a GTT then i would say the best would be the Clio engine as it is newer and more likely to be tunable at a later date.
The first thing to check would be if the engine will fit onto the standard gearbox or if the gearbox is a straight fit as this will make life much easier.

If all this is too different then go for the 1.7 as it is a straight fit with a standard box.

Subject: MILAGE

Question:
hi, just a brief one. cos ive just put a 58000 mile engine in, does that allow me to swap the clocks from 120000 mile ones to the 58000 mile ones, as long as i inform the DVLA? i know i have to inform them of the engine swap numbers etc.

cheers, chris(r5turbonutta)

ps. you offer an invalueble service to this club!

Answer:
Your car has still done 120000 miles so you are not legally allowed to swop the clocks for 58000 mile ones. However, you could fit the clocks with a note on them (on the back??) saying changed with 58k engine, total mileage 62k plus dash reading or something like that. Therefore you are not ""Clocking"" the car but replacing the ""broken"" clocks with second hand ones.

Subject: hesitation

Question:
when driving along in any gear my car is hesitant even under only very slight load, until the turbo picks up fully an then shes away! ive tryed new plugs, leads, rota arm &disi, fuel filter an today i rebuilt the carb with one of k-tecs service kits but still know joy!! can you help me please im stuck!!

Answer:
I would say you have either got an accelerator pump problem on the carb or maybe you are over fuelling badly.
Try getting it set up by K-Tec or whoever.

Subject: restrictor

Question:
what is a restrictor???? i know the just of what they do.can you make them ureself or do you need to buy them??? if you can make them ureself what sort of size are they. i don't want to crank the boost further than 16 psi on my boost control.

Answer:
a restrictor, is a piece of plastic or metal , with a hole drilled in it , that fits inside a tube, to reduce the air flow to a particular component. you can make them yourself, or you can use the carb jets, which work quite nicely. ;-)

Question:
Hi wiz, should the timing chain be replaced at a certain mileage?do they start to rattle first or do they just snap?my car has done 95000 still on original turbo and never had the head off

Answer:
When it rattles change it!

Never know of one to snap unless it has been rattling for ages first.

Subject: ITS GETTING HOT IN HERE!!!

Question:
HEY WIZ
ON MY GT IVE GOT A COPPER CORED RAD ALSO LOW TEMP SWITCH AND LOWER THERMOSTAT BUT STILL MY TEMP ALWAYS GO TO THE 3/4 MARK AND FAN COMES IN UNLESS DRIVING IVE TRIED PUTTING AN HIGH PRESSURE AIR LINE THROUGH THE SYSTEM AND THIS HELPED A LITTLE BUT NOW BACK TO SAME TEMP AGAIN SURELY THIS CANT BE GOOD FOR IT. ITS BEEN BLEED LOADS OF TIMES AND MAKES NO DIFFERENCE.

Answer:
Believe it or not the low temp switches don't work as well in a copper cored rad due to better heat dissipation. As long as the temp stays below the 3/4 mark and doesn't go above it then it should be fine.

All this is assuming that your rad isn't blocked at all!

Subject: Correct pipe location?

Question:
Mr. Wiz,

I have put my car back together, and it is ready to run! But I wanted to ask a question about one hose I have - the water-pump to lower-end of header tank. Does it goto the lower connection that is nearer the front of the car, or the rear of the car?

Also, what is the correct route for this hose to take? Have run mine along the top with the degas -> header tank top connection hose, but the only place I could drop it down the the header tank was between the boost hoses, there is not much room there.

I was thinking that maybe it should be ran through those eye-hole things that are bolted to the front of the head....

Any tips?

Answer:
Although it doesn't actually matter because the two connectors are directly linked in the header tank, it goes to the front one with the hose to the heater on the rear one.

It is a long time since i have looked at a standard car but i believe it runs along clipped to the boost hose.

Subject: Oil Everywhere 2

Question:
Latest update - car is fine until it is running full boost - then oil explosion occurs! Boost gauge reads almost off the scale (it didn't used to!) on full boost, but the car doesn't feel like it has that kick on accelerating that it used to - the power is more distributed through the rev range, but kickes in later than it should. I've had a look at the breather system for holes/crax in the pipes but all seems ok. Haven't checked the intercooler - worth a go?

When I fitted the cone filter I removed, then replaced the breather pipe going from intercooler to turbo, and the U-bend pipe also going into the turbo (on which I attached the cone filter). Other than that I did nothing with the breather pipes.

When the car is boosting the induction noise sounds more metallic (like a much louder version of the whirring noise the turbo normally makes when it boosts up), than airy. Not sure if this is normal as I've never heard one before.

Thanks as always!

Jon

Answer:
I think you need help!

Good job i am here then!

Oil explosion is most likely due to a build up of pressure in the breather system most often caused by worn or not bedded in piston rings.

As for the boost problems, i think you need to check your actuator pipework for splits or holes.

Metallic sound from turbo doesn't sound good, should be more of a whoosh or whistle.

Subject: the smell of oil

Question:
Hello i have a small problem with my reno.......the engine is running fine, but after abit of a long journey (about 10or so miles) i can smell a hint of like burning oil......also the car smoked a little but then went away after a few seconds............sometimes when booting it, it lets out a bit of black smoke............can you help me with this?...........thanx wizz

Answer:
Right lets get things sorted.

Smell of burning oil is probably down to oil dripping onto something hot like turbo or manifold.

Clearing smoke from startup is probably down to slightly worn valve stem seals.

Black smoke when booting it is overfuelling.

Question:
Have you come across anyone who has used nitrous on the 5 engine, i have some fairly decent mods (running 180bhp@20psi) and am thinking of putting 50bhp of nitrous on too, not to be used all the time as it is pretty quick now, just sometimes (when it has to be done!!!!). What do you advice??????

Cheers,

Chris

Answer:
Get it fitted and set up professionally and it should be fine.

Subject: dodgy brakes

Question:
Hi Wiz,

When braking if i take my foot off the brake pedal then re apply it i lose about half of my braking power,it does this each time untill i have almost no brakes at all but if i accelerate they work again.
Hope you can help

Thanks,

Scott

Answer:
Sounds like you have a servo problem. Check the pipe from the manifold to the servo for leaks, the valve into the manifold should only work one way as should the one on the servo end.

Subject: Gear selection

Question:
Hi wiz i cant select reverse and sometimes 1 or second could you please help me, my clutch is not slipping but the pedal is hard to push down. many thanks wiz David Bradbury

Answer:
It sounds like your cable has stretched in which case you need to replace it or you can fit a spacer to the pedal end temporarily.

It is also possible that the clutch pressure plate is going but check the cable first.

Question:
what kind of filler is best for filling in the gaps where the strips used to be?

Answer:
Elastic/flexible type filler is needed to make sure it doesn't come out under a little bumper flex. Make sure you allow for sinkage of the filler before final finishing/painting.
