Subject: Turbo kicking in late

Question:
Hi again Wiz!

Having some strange readings on the turbo gauge. It's getting at least 3/4 of the way round before the turbo really kicks in - used to kick in about halfway round (can't hear the turbo spinning up 'till the gauge reads halfway to max). It all seems to be kicking off a bit further up the revs than it used to. It's nearly into the red before I feel any real pull.

The gauge is also reading almost off the scale at max boost, but I'm sure this is a lie! It doesn't feel any quicker than it used to.

Any ideas? I was advised that it could be a split in one of the boost pipes but I've checked them all out today and can't see any sign of this. I can't hear any air escaping when boosting. Turbo seems fine - old but no sign of smoking.

Thanks again for your help.

Jon

Answer:
sound to me like you got a leek some were in the boost pressure line pipes intercooler carb manifold etc
get some realy soppy water and paint this onto joints etc you should be able to get some boost just by reving it at stand still and watch for bubbles

Subject: Non starter, no response

Question:
hi wiz
After leaving my car garaged over the winter period (4 months) when I tried to start it, nothing at all happened. The battery has enough charge showing from the voltmeter reading (headlights come on etc..) and I've checked the connection on the starter motor which is also ok.
When I turn the key I hear the fuel pump (or a 3 second eletrical buzz ) buts
all.
Any ideas?

Answer:
do a little check put a volt meter on the battery and measure the voltage when you crank it if it goes bellow 9v then the bat is disscharged or it ffffooooppppaaarrrdd so charge it up fully and try again if no smilely joy then new bat

Subject: Quality French Electrics

Question:
Wiz,

I was driving with my lights and cd player on and every now and again my stereo went off, i stopped the car and when i tried to restart it, it was dead, I bumped it and left it running for about 10 mins and it seemed fine, lights weren't dimming or nowt.

I drove off and after about 5 mins my lights went so dim you couldn't see them. I charged the battery over night for about twelve hours and it still never read full, i fired it up but lights dim heavily when you use something else electrical, like the horn.

The alternator is pretty new so i dont think its that but also i aint gettin a battery light but i tested the battery with a multi meter and it aint receivin any charge from the alt?

Do you reckon it's the battery, alternator or dodgy wiring?

Or poss a combination of all!!

The battery is 2 years old but has been stood for a year!

cheers

cheers

Answer:
a batt that has stood for a year is most prob gonna be foopaared
do an easy check take off batt fully charge it and refit.. put on your head lights and other things like wipers heater etc and see how long the batt lasts if its only a few mins remove tops off bat and look at the fluid in all cells is one fizzing alot more than the others if it is then its of to meet its maker
the other check is replace the small connectors in the brown block in the alt wiring take note they are of diff size so get the correct size connectors

The pipe towards the front of the car is the one for the actuator and the rest needs to be binned and blocked off where it is removed from. This is known as the cup mod.

Subject: Head Gasket & ???

Question:
Wiz, don't know really where to begin with my problem.

My car is running very poorly. It judders, splutters, backfires, and the revometer goes up and down up and down and there's a loud ticking noise from the dash when this happens. This has happened before and I found out it was a wire that was earthing the car. Sorted that & everything was OK till now. Could it be the coil? ECU?

As well as all this I think my head is on the way out as the temperature rises a lot, although there is no ""mayonnaise"" in the oil or smoking. Although I only took the car for a 5 minute spin as it kept driving erraticly and bunny hopping on me so I've not had a chance to run it properly.

To make matters worse, all the specialists are hundreds of miles away so I'm unable to stick it on a trailer and dump it with them to sort.

Cheers Wiz.

Answer:
It could be a wiring problem behind the dash and there is an earth there as well. Dodgy wiring could be causing the ignition module to play up or it could be something else like the timing sensor wires breaking up. This could lead on to timing problems which will cause overheating or that could be down to fuelling or even a blocked rad or knackered thermostsat.

Subject: Oil Everywhere

Question:
Hey wiz - I have just fitted a cone filter and everything seemed fine. Car was running very well, boosting up a treat (quickest it's been) - everything, at last, feels very good.

Stopped the car and there'a a burning oily smell. Looked under the bonnet and there's oil EVERYWHERE, although all on the driver side of the engine. It's all over the underside of the bonnet so it looks like there was some serious pressure behind it!

I checked the dipstick and it was about half an inch out of it's hole - could there really be enough pressure here to blast oil all over the place? It shouldn't be the HG as I've had a new, uprated one fitted recently and the engine runs at the perfect temp all the time. No smoke at all from exhaust and no oil in water, although some in the pipes going into the intercooler.

Thinking about steam cleaning the engine to find out where this is coming from - any idea how much that normally sets you back?

Cheers mate - once again, I really appreciate your help smile

Answer:
Sounds to me like you may have a build up of crankcase pressure. This is normally due to either ring blow by or a blocked breather system.
When you fitted the cone filter, what did you do with the breather pipes? Anything?

Subject: Stalling at idle

Question:
Hi hope u can help,

I have had this problem for some time now, The car runs 14 PSI and a 130 main jet but appart from that is std. It starts fine using the choke and warms up quite quickly but once it reaches a certain temp (which is around half way between the first mark 1/3 and where i think the 1/2 mark should be) it keeps cutting out.... I have replaced the carb, cleaned the carb, fitted new seals and a new mixture screw, re routed and fixed the throttle cable and choke cable. Once the car reaches this temp it stays there for some time which makes me think it is the temp at which the thermostat is opening then once it rises past this temp it runs mint.

I have also tried changing the ECU for my spare Phase 2 one which seemed to make it run better 90% of the time but the other 10% it did crazy things like kangeroo hopping and irratic revs.....

Hope you can help wizzard......

Cheers Niall.

Answer:
Sounds like some sort of leak in the small pipework around the carb/actuator.

Subject: No Lights

Question:
Hi again,

I fitted a DIY alarm and remote door locking kit on my car.... Once finished the car went into the garage for a few months.... The next time i drove it the headlights didn't work properly.....

The side lights came on on the first click but if you rotated the stalk another 90 degrees the main beam didn't work but if you pull the stick towards you the full beam works.....???

I have checked all the fuses and they seem ok as do the relays.... could any thing eles cause this or is there a seperate fuse or switch anywhere else?

Cheers Niall

Answer:
Check the drivers side scuttle area for the resistor thing on the inner wing. May be a loose connection.

Subject: head gasket

Question:
putting a uprated head gasket on my car and just wanted to the best way to do this ie;tork settings for head bolts and any thing else to look out for please

Answer:
book says 44lbs/ft for head bolts but i would say at least 55-60lbs/ft if you use high boost. Also use better head bolts, either 10.9 or 12.9 strength.

Subject: Perc fan?

Question:
What is the purpose of a perc fan?
I've never seen anything like it on other cars?
Is it just to cool fuel and put cold air into the intercooler system?
Can it be removed and pipes be protected another way?

Answer:
The perc fan has a few functions.
1) It cools the fuel inlet pipe to reduce heatsoak/evapouration.
2) It blows cool air into the intercooler to carb hose when the engine is not on boost.
3) It blows cool air onto the carb again for evapouration prevention.

These all add up to better hot starting apparently but i know lots of people who just blank off the intercooler to carb hose connection and junk the lot!
I believe a vented bonnet does a better job!

Wiz,

My battery and alt are new but and my battery light does not work?(i have replaced the bulb)

The battery isn't receiving any charge even though the alt is new, I have re- crimped the wires that looked crap but still the battery light doesn't work?

Any ideas?

Answer:
Check the two wires that go to the top of the alternator, as these are the likely suspects.

Subject: which cam

Question:
my engine is shortly do for change, and im thinking of changing the cam shaft. would you bother?, if so which one would you buy as there seem to be ample gains in power. also is the timing on most after market cams sutible or do they need adjusting and how is that done.

cheers

muz

Answer:
I would say to go for either a piper 285 or maybe a tuner cam ie. K-Tec or BB Tunings.

Timing is correct on most cars but you could fit a vernier pulley but this would require a modified timing cover as well to gain access.

Subject: Bulk head solenoid?

Question:
Hi Wiz,
What is that solenoid supposed to be for that is attached to the bulk head? It has a pipe running from the air intake pipe and then goes into the anti- perc unit? And where does it get it's live feed from? I've got no current going to the solenoid, Is it supposed to open when the anti-perc fan cuts in? Cheers mate.

Answer:
This valve opens when the car is not boosting and the perc fan is running to allow cool air to be blown into the inlet to prevent fuel evapouration and hot starting problems.
