Subject: Head Re-thickening? Question: A local engine tuning company told me that when a head is skimmed below tolerances they can make a stanless steel shim that is set onto the head with a special glue. Have you ever had any dealings with this technique? Would you reconmend it on a 5 turbo? Answer: Never heard of it before! It sounds viable as the shim will be like fitting a thicker head gasket. |

Subject: Alternator not charging: Question: Ok my car has suddenly developled an alt/battery problem. When i am driving along the voltage on the capacitor is slowly falling, when i stop, the car will not restart-is this simply the alternator has stopped working or could it be something else- by the way the alt is only 3 months old???? Answer: I take it you mean you have a cap fitted for the stereo if you can see it falling?? Get the charging tested by using a voltmeter on the output side of the alt and earth. Should be at least 12.5 - 14.5 volts. If it is knackered then get it replaced free from where you bought it from. |

Subject: Timing adjustment and setup: Question: how do you know if your car is overfueling???? I have a suspicion mine is, is it worth getting a timing adjustor and retarding the timing to get optimum power, also is it worth getting it setup at a rolling road so the fueling/air etc can be set up???? Answer: Rolling road is usually the best way for an acurate set up. Black smoke or very sooty exhaust (even after long run) means over fuelling. You could use an adjustable timing sensor but it would more likely improve power to advance it a little. |

Subject: over fuelling Question: Wiz, I know its a pretty generic question but what are the major causes of over fuelling? My car overfuels to high heaven but i'm not sure if it just needs settin up or if sommat is knackered? will a rolling road setup diagnose any potential problem? cheers Answer: Just about the only things that cause over fuelling are blocked air filters and jets that are too big! Rolling road is designed to show up problems! |

Subject: Rich fuel/oil smell Question: Hi, My clutch has recently started slipping but only when very hot. When I 've been driving the car for about 10 minutes, if I stop, I can smell a strong oily smell come into the car. It doesnt smell like engine oil. Could this be my worn clutch or is it more likely to be gearbox oil leaking from somewhere? The gearbox only gets difficult to change gear when stood in traffic for lengths of time, when it is cooled again it is fine. What do u reckon? Cheers. Answer: Could well be gearbox oil on the clutch plate if it is leaking. Check the gearbox level and then get the clutch replaced as soon as possible. |

Subject: Mystery Oil leak??? Question: Hi wiz, I could do with you vast experience and knowledge on this one ![]() There is no leakage from the rocker cover, all the bottom end seals, sump and even pulley seal have been replaced. Now the oil leak is quite bad, it seems to drip from (possibly) the top of engine onto the subframe parallel with the pulley wheel then drip onto the floor. Harpo and i have had a look, and the sump is dry etc... And we concluded that the head gasket could be leaking oil from it??? What do you think? could this be the cause? Thanks in advance, Wav ![]() Answer: It is possible for the head gasket to leak if it has blown between the oil galleries and the outside of the gasket. |

Subject: Start bitch, start!!! Question: Hi Wiz, My raft of shite will no start. Its been sitting for two weeks plus now and i've decided its about time to get sorted. The problem is it will not even give any responce when you try and start it. About a week ago it did start but with alot of effort and gournin from the engine. Since then i've fitted a brand spanking new high performance altonator, spark plugs and battery on her but still nae responce. The disstributor cap and leads are spot on. I was thinking there may be some sort of problem with the starter motor or corroded connections. Can you shed some sort of light to get her moving again? Answer: Could well be a dodgy starter motor or connections. Check that the small cable to the starter solenoid has not come off as this will stop it working. |

Subject: Sticking Revs Question: Wiz, A quick poser for you. After driving my car for a few minutes, and then stop in traffic or something, the revs seem to stick at 1500 - 2000RPM, but if I rev the engine it then drops down to a much nicer sounding 900RPM. What could be causing this? Thanks T. Answer: Could be a weak return spring or more likely a sticking/fraying accelerator cable. |

Subject: Slapping sound Question: Hi Wizz, I was driving home from work today and about halfway through my journey I noticed a slapping sound coming from the front right wheel. When I speed up the noise goes faster, when I slow it slows. I too the wheel off and there's nothing touching it, also its not flat. I have 15"" momos and the car isn’t lowered. Any ideas? Cheers Answer: if all checks out and you cant find anything. look for any stones in the tread as a stone etc will produce a tick tick sound |

Subject: Will not start when cold Question: Please help. My engine takes a long time to start when cold.It will turn over and after a few turns the engine is trying to run. I cannot use any choke as it just stalls the engine. It will start or less OK when it is warm. When the car is stationary and the engine is warm i can slowly build up the revs. however if i put my foot down on the throttle the engine stalls. The engine has just been rebuilt and i had a large fuel jet (which came from K-Tec with a boost adjustment kit) changed back to the original due to fuel consumption. thanx John Answer: looks like you need to get the carb properly cleaned and set up mate |

Subject: Cuttin Question: The coil lead and ECU leads are well away from each other. What does the ign. relay control and do they ever give grief?.I'm puzzled with this one. Thanks for your time. Answer: the ign relay is trigered by the over boost switch located in the large boost hose between the turbo and intercooler cutting ign if too much boost its poss that its a poor conection or earth run engine and pull and wiggle all wiring looms inc under dash see if you can reproduce prob check the two main earthing pionts that are located behind the kick panel trims in both front footwells 10mm bolts that hold wires onto body |

Subject: Cone Filter Question: Hey Wiz, Just fitted a piper X induction kit Nice ![]() A couple of things... it's situated next to the turbo - I have a GT Tuning heatshield with the double skinned heat barrier and a scooby bonnet vent. Do you reckon this is sufficient for cooling, or should I be looking for more ducting? This was my 1st adventure under the bonnet of the 5. I just disconnected all the hoses, lifted out the old air box, binned the pipe that dissappears under the turbo and fitted the filter onto the end of the U shaped pipe coming from the turbo. All sound OK? I've left the cold air pipe pointing at the filter which I assume is a good idea. Thanks for your help well appreciated! Jon Answer: cone filters are good if you can get them in a possition that draws in cold or cool air they also make a good induction noise but they do have a down side its difficult to get them to just suck in cool air. Keeping the air duckt above the intercooler is a good idea shield the cone from any hot air better still reposition away from turbo |
