Subject: oil pressure

Question:
Hi Wiz,

1) Other than the one in the sump where are the oil pressure sensors?

2)I've read about oil splirting out of breather pipes, all my pipework seems to lead to some other area of the engine. Where could i fit a catch tank and what pipe(s) would go to it? the oil breather infront of the carb has no pipe coming off the top of it where would this pipe normally go ?

My carb top has a blank on the turbo side of the carb? any ideas why this would've been blanked off in the past?

Cheers

Answer:
oil pressure is taken from the switch that is on the block follow the turbo oil feed to the block an you will find the oil pressure switch (the one in the sump does the level)
you could have a bit of crank case compretion but if you put all breather pipes on back to std that should cope with it
the blank on the turbo side could mean the previuse owner has done cup mode

Subject: run out of ideas

Question:
Hi wiz, I'm still no nearer to solving the problem with my car..briefly the car turns over but won't start .. Carb float chamber filling with fuel,(not evacauting thou) all jets cleaned, dizzy cleaned, all plugs sparking..AA came out he reckoned fuel wasn't getting throu to the inlet manifold? I rang andy at BB Tuning (they set my car up) quite a breif answer 'check the square like part on the drivers side of the carb with the diaphram this is whats likely to be causeing the problem' quite frustrating as i haven't got a clue as to what i am looking for or at, how would this have anything to do with this? any ideas very much appreciated wiz, i have posted a message on the boards and no one seemed to have any fresh ideas apart from the obvious, i'm desperate to get her going now please help..sorry for the essay regards michael

Answer:
if you got a good spark and no fuel (dry plugs) ten its a blocage in the carb as you say that fuel is going to the carb from the pump
if you know a mate in a garage that can clean and blow out the carb (with an air line) for you then try that

Subject: running out of ideas part trois!

Question:
Thanks for the speedy reply..the plugs were as dry as a bone .. the aa bod did the test u suggested, so it must be fuelling.. when i pumped the throttle (oherr) fuel was getting throu to the float chamber and just filling up not evecuating..is this the norm?

Answer:
BB were trying to tell you about the accelerator pump. its located on the drivers side of the carburettor. there is link from the throttle, that goes under the carb, to the accelerator pump. as you move the throttle you should see the centre of the accelerator pump moving in and out. it could be stuck...i.e fecked. in which case you need to take apart and clean it up!

my advice would be to borrow a friends carb....fit it. if it works ok, then you know that your carb need attention!

Subject: Re:loss of power

Question:
I havent got a boost adjuster, but can i leave the overboost sensor disconected, also would a knackered actuator cause the same simptoms

Answer:
you can leave the overboost connector off.
sounds more likely to be a split pipe, usually where it meets the turbo.

if not check all pipes, from turbo to intercooler and then intercooler to carb. also chck the intercoler aint leakin!

a knackered actuator would cause similar problems.

Subject: standard r5 gtt

Question:
I have just bought a standard 5 and i want to make it quicker but i dont know where to start, the car has a le mans twin piston dump valve and a pipercross filter bolted on to the turbo and all silicon hoses. what can a do to have a rapid r5 gtt

Answer:
more money means more power, unless you are willing to have a go yourself. :-)

most people get a bleed valve and get the carb tweeked. they then run 15psi and the standard turbo, which should push out around 140-150bhp.

unless of course you have loads of dough to blow!- then come and see me!- i'll be your friend ;-)

Subject: Temp Gauge shooting up!!!!!

Question:
When i first start her up and drive a mile or so, the gauge shoots up to like stupid temps levels, then it will suddently drop right back down to cold???????? Any ideas??????

Answer:
sounds like an air lock in the water system.

try bleeding the cooling system correctly, this can be acheived by undoing the bleed screws....then blowing into the expansion bottle. when the water running out of the bleed screws is bubble free (you can hear it splutter when there is air in there), tighten up the bleed screws , and refill the expansion bottle.

Subject: Exhaust heat shield

Question:
My fuel tank heat shield is well past its sell by date, the one that protects it from the exhaust at the rear axle and back. Do you think that binding the exhaust with cooling ribbon, the stuff that is designed for manifolds, would be sufficient cooling for this section. The heat shield restricts the positioning of the exhaust, and as mine is 2.5"

Answer:
I find it tricky to get it to sit high enough to avoid knocking on the rear axle without making contact with the heat shield itself. Removing the shield gives a bit more scope for clearance. The bound exhaust cools enough that you can keep your hand on it at full operating temperature."

Hi, just a quick one
What would you suggest i do now to increase power its recently be on a rolling
road and currently putting out 110bhp @ the wheels @ 14psi i've done the the normal things like air filter and intercooler also a bleed valve and now want more power but i do'nt really want to increase the boost if i can help it and i've been looking at cams are they worth it and how much would you say to have one fitted?also do you recommend any?

Thanks Ellis

get a 130 main jet put in and turn boost up to 14 psi all the cars i look after that have done this are around 150 bhp with no probs
work on getting the intake air cool (not cold)
