Subject: Bits & Pieces Question: 1) I have a quickshift induction kit and it seems to growl really loud all the time,do you know what could be causing it to growl and how can i cure it? 2) When lowering the rear torsion bars how much does each spline lower? 3) Is there a company who can repair ECU diaphrams or fit new ones. Is my knackered, i can suck it and hold a vacuum for about 10 seconds then it diappears, is this correct? Thanks for all your help Wiz!!!! Answer: 1) Induction kits do growl. It is the air passing through them. This is why standard cars have air boxes, to keep the noise down! 2) Just remove the bar, set the height required and refit. Height is calculated by the distance between the shocker mounting points. 3) Not really sure about it holding for 10 seconds but i expect it could be leaking. Try comparing it to another Ignition module. Probably cheaper to buy a replacement than get it fixed. |

Subject: steaming rad Question: just put new top hose on, and a new thermostat (cos it didn't have one before). I filled the water system again, bled it and ran it on idle. The radiator started steaming and the fan didn't cut in before the 3/4 mark (which it used to) where i turned it off. Also i know the thermostat works as i tested it first. What could you suggest is the problem, and do you think i should be lookin at a low temp thermostat/fan switch? Answer: drill a hole in the outer skirt of the stat .. put this hole uppermost ... hole size is about 2mm.... rad will steam if its got water on the outside as you just done top hose most likely to be prob |

Subject: Carb Question: Just finished overhauling my carb.is there a dimension to adjust the rod to, that runs from the carb butterfly throttle spindle to the accelerator pump? Cheers Wiz Answer: yes, my friend!- to quote haynes carb manual! turn the carb over, and inserta drill bit between the carb wall and the throttle plate. the drill shank dimension should be 5mm for carbs with number 804 or 912. 7mm for all others. the accelerator pump should be at the end of its travel with the drill bit inserted. adjust via the locknut. hope this helps |

Subject: frikking electrics Question: right wiz, i got a few problems with my chariot. firstly my battery light is on constantly, and the battery keeps going flat, surprise, and it`s a new battery. Then, my oil pressure and level gauge doesnt move at all whether running or just ignition on. the perc fan doesnt work, and the bloody radiator fan is on constantly now, even with the temp sensor disconnected. it`s all fun and games wiz...please gimme some pointers, i`m going bald! cheerz Answer: get a voltage meter, and check the output from the alternator. it should read between 13.'summat' and 14.8volts. if it does have such a reading then check the connection onto the starter motor, as it could be loose. if you aint got a decent reading then your alternator is fecked. the oil level and pressure gauges always go wrong. or it could bein the dash, there is no real way of guessing with one it is.... check the perc fan actually does work, by connecting a battery across it. if it does work then suspect the fuse, inline with the motor. or that both the perc fan sensors are shot!- could also be a relay fault. which temp sensor have you got disconnected? if yer fan is running whilst the rad fan switch is disconnected then its definately a knackered relay, situated next to the alternator, attached to the front of the car. hope this helps, my friend :-P |

Subject: COOLANT HOSES Question: Hi wizard. just noticed a split in the coolant pipe going from the bottom of the de-gasing chamber to the matrix. Its the first time i've had to change this hose.. looks difficult at the matrix side, is it? what is the best way to tackle this problem, from top or bottom? its the bulkhead end of the job i'm worried about. your help would be mucho appreciated. Answer: if you were a cheapskate, then get some copper tubing (or even plastic 'joiner' piece) from B&Q and cut and shut the pipe. You may have to cut the hose clip off if its one with a very small hex head on. best off trying to tackle from the top, then if that dont work then attack from the bottom. beware though....the part of the matrix, which the hose attaches to it plastic, and could break if you decided to lever it off too violently... |

Subject: Stalling pt12 Question: wiz, probably a common question but basicly fitted a gp a carb, when using choke to start car from cold it flooded and stalled so i removed the choke flap as prev. questions ,now starts spot on idles to what i set fast idle 2,then after 5 mins or so starts 2 stall, have 2 rev to keep it running. Then after couple of minutes of this is perfect any ideas.cheers adam Answer: when you start the car, in the morning, the carb is very cold, and the fuel has difficulty vaporising properly. After a reasonable period of time, it runs ok, cos the carb is now warm and the fuel isn't puddling in the manifold anymore. try putting a thermostat in, as this helps warm the car up considerably. other than that, you've got to accept that with this carb in this weather, you will always have problems starting with no choke! |

Subject: 4 pots brakes!! Question: is it possible to get a four pot kit for the phase 2 r 5?? if so where and how much.. if not can i get a clio 16v kit to fit? Answer: why would you want to have such powerul brakes on a car that is so light? all you'll end up achieving is very long skids, as the tyre grip isn't the best, at the best of times!!! ok to stop the wheel turning , but when they stop too quickly on the GTT, then you end up losing traction.... i think wilwoods are 'multi-pot' calipers that can fit the 5... |

Subject: Volvo/Padle hybrid clutch? Question: Hello Wizard, My problem is that I need a stronger clutch than the Volvo one, as I had some slip with it. I wonder if I can fit a Sachs paddle disc (torsion dampered, 7.7 mm width) with the Volvo cover. I mean, will it work? Sachs catalogue says that their organic disc can take 160 lbft, the paddle about 210 lbft. The Volvo cover being stronger it can take 220 lbft with organic disc (so they say!) so with the paddle it might be able to take 250+ lbft, which is plenty. It will run low mileage, do about 10 races this year, each race about 4-8 Quarter mile runs. Apart from the races it will be used on the road too, but very rarely. Or any other ideas to have a strong clutch? Answer: if you wanted a really strong clutch, then try an AP cover and plate. i think HELIX also do a similar clutch kit. the volvo item is very good, although it doesn't take kindly to too much slippage, especially when you take off and have reasonable power. you can end up glazing the surface of the flywheel if you are really unlucky, and this will cause it to slip very regularly! |
