Subject: Turbo is gone!!

Question:
Hi wizz, driving along no smoke or noise, but turbo just was not spinning up??removed airfilter and found unable to turn propeller!seized solid!I assume starved of oil or bearings gone?(engine did sound bit rattley before?)Anyway dont know much about turbos, either way it needs replacing!Do i get a standard one or uprated?ive strapped intercooler, bigger carb jets, uprated headgasket and bolts, airfilter and exhaust, running 15psi.wat turbo would you recommend for my setup? Also what is the turbo on a standard r5 engine? many thanks Des

Answer:
The standard turbo is a T2.
You could go for a better built T2 with 360 degree bearings etc or a bigger T25 which will handle the boost level better/for longer.

Just make sure you sort out why the turbo failed before replacing it and do a full oil change as well.

Subject: Engine trouble

Question:
Is it bad news if the head gasket has gone?.........ive heard that if this goes on a renault 5 then its not worth fixing as you'll always have problems..............is this true?......also is it expensive to get the head done on a reno 5?

Answer:
You are being mis-informed. As long as the cylinder head is checked for flatness and skimmed slightly if required then it will be fine. If you follow the Haynes manual step by step then you could do it yourself in a couple of days. Try speaking to some of the tuners like K-Tec, BB, DD etc about a head job and prices.

Question:
hi wiz me again its a new day and i have bleed the water again and road tested it and it still runs to hot its wierd cuz why is it messing about now anyway just been out in it and the temp went up again so i lost my rag and red lined the c**t down the bypass and when i came back in to the 30mph zone it went down to normal for about 5mins and then as i was going alone it started going back up to half way so i went back on the bypass and it stayed up at half until i went back 2 30mph stayed down 4 5 mins and then guess what back up to half why is it doing it 2 me every thing seems to be working fine and its not overheating its just running 2 hot. ever known this to happen?

Answer:
Half way up the gauge is not too hot it is quite normal!
If you previously had a lower temp thermostat then it may have run cooler.

Don't worry unless the needle heads for the 3/4 mark or higher.

Subject: Actuator/lack of Boost

Question:
I asked you about a lack of boost problem which is now sorted thanks, I did have a split that was not obvious. It is now boosting happily although my dump valve is not working properly it is a diaphram type and the diaphram looks fine I think I will have to replace it. My new question is I blew down my actuator pipe as instructed and nothing moved? I did not get any evidence of leaking it just did not move. Does this mean its broke? you can move it by hand if you push it. What happens if it is broken?
""P.S. Happy New Year""

Answer:
if you got a mate near you ask to borrow his or her dump valve see if you got the same probbs

Question:
wizz, thanx 4 v reply, got a few more 4 u, as imthick lol, is the lower gasket/ sump seal only available from renault and how much??. when you say wet and dry compression, i take it you mean get a compression tool thingy and test each cylinder in turn, with oil in etc, do i need to take the other 3 plugs out 2 do this? and the same again when its all drained, silly question but do i turn the engine over by the key when its drained ?thanx m8 have a good new year

Answer:
to do a compretion check ... remove all four plugs fit comp gauge to No1 cyl open throttle and crank on the key .. repeat on all cyl's wright down the readings.. now on a wet test squirt some oil into the bore via plug hole using pump can(5 to 6 pumps) and check comp pump the same amount of oil into each boar and only oil the boar that you are testing

Subject: Non Starter

Question:
First of all happy new year wiz! wondering if you can shed any info on this , my car is standing at present due to me being banned, i was starting her every otherday no problems. Then out of the blue i started her and she ran like a pig (3 1/2 cylinders) so far i have checked the dizzy, leads, carb, idel jet and what i thought was the main jet because it had 125 on it but turns out to be the air corrector(dunce) how do i remove the main jet once the carb top is off etc and where is its exact location going across the venturi?? I'm getting petrol upto the carb so that rules out a few things and i'm getting a spark from the leads off the block and the fuel sender is all present and correct..i'm running out of ideas how to remedy the problem, your wisdom would be appreciated thanks in advance michael...p.s the car is just turning over and not firing up.

Answer:
The main jet is accessed through a 12mm bolt on the front of the carb on the outside. It sits in the float chamber. Main jet blockage will stop all cylinders.
I would say that it is more likely electrical like plugs. They may have a build up of crud due to not getting up to full temperature.

Subject: How much BOOST/ Which TURBO

Question:
Hi Wizard,
I'm planning to buy a new turbo in the next few weeks and i was wondering what i should go for. I was thiking of a T25 Turbo. But am unsure of how much lag and how much boost to set it to.
The modifications i have done are Front Mount Intercooler, Group A Carb, Exhaust, Airfilter, Enlargened Downpipe and Elbow and Uprated Fuel Pump. No Block or Head Work Done.
I think i'm running 14psi at moment(with my T2) but need more power. Cheers Wizard

Answer:
A T25 hybrid will do up to about 25 psi or a T2/T25 would do up to about 20psi with less lag.

You are bound to get some more lag with the T25 but the power potential is greater.

Head/cam would benifit with both these turbos.

Subject: Its trying to kill me!

Question:
Hello again Mate.
Following on from my last question about it dying on me....
I took the carb off, cleaned it out and rebuilt with new gaskets/diaphrams and fitted a new fuel filter. Car fired up first turn. ""Shit hot!"" i thought. Went for a spin.....and it died again!
BASTARD!
However when i took it for a spin, each time i booted it the boost gauge would go up but the car accelerated normally until about 3500rpm then it took off like a nutter, wheelspining and throwing me all over the road! Its trying to kill me i'm sure!

When i first got the car it was much smoother than this!

I dont know if its related but i have noticed that the flap on the air filter housing has been modified to only allow cold air in and the intercoolers been modded with a screw to allow full flow through the core all the time.
Could the carb be icing up? I havent tried to put it back to standard because i dont know whether the mods offer any benefit or not.

Sorry about the long winded question mate but I'm new to Ren 5 Turbos and need all the help i can get!
Happy new year!
Thanx.

Answer:
I doubt it is carb icing but try covering the front of the intercooler with card board to see if it makes a difference.

Check the actuator pipes etc are all on correctly.

Subject: Engine trouble

Question:
hello wizz

funny enough your right about the intercooler......it is an over size one from GT Tuning...........and also i notice its mainly when i am driving home from work.......which is at night.........i did drive it for a long distance the other week when i when into the city....(about 8 miles) and it was fine once its going.............i do however have the fan on all the time cuz the iso switch keeps going faulty (as its situated on front of car, and it gets wet easy), so the car is always running just below the first mark.........is this ok to do, or should the car be running a bit more hot?.........also can you tell me if not having a thermostat in the car is bad.......cuz i noticed that i don't think there is one since i can't feel it on the pipe that goes into the water pump?

thanx...........craig

Answer:
I allways run cars with thermostats in but with a hole drilled in the top to allow more flow when its closed. Go for a low temp one and get the fan wiring sorted/insulated. I think the ideal temp is between the first line and half way up the gauge.

Subject: how to remove slats

Question:
how do i remove the slats from my back and front bumpers so i can replace them with mesh .and how can i fit the mesh in place of the slats

thank you

Answer:
Use a hacksaw or similar to remove the slats and just fill in the bits to match.
Use either ""No more nails"" or fibreglass to secure the mesh after you have shaped it to fit fully.

Subject: Overheating

Question:
Hi wiz,

She's started to overheat! She normally runs at about 1/2 way up i.e. between the 1/3 and 2/3 marks. Today, after a 45 min run including traffic she crept up to 2/3 and occasionally higher. I could hear the fan kick in but it seemed to kick in much later than usual i.e. at 2/3 on the gauge and sometimes would kick in for a bit, not drop the temp very much, then stop again. I managed to get her home and when I got out I could hear water boiling. I'm having to top up coolant a bit more regularly than I should be I think (once a fortnight to once a month). Hope that helps

What do you think?

Cheers wiz

Gareth

Answer:
Bleed the coolant system thoroughly and see if this cures the fault. If not then it sounds like you have a leak causing air to get into the system.
Try pressure testing the coolant system and see where the coolant comes out.

Subject: setting boost limits?

Question:
Hi wizzard mate! Happy New Year!!! I have a 3 way underbonnet bleed valve, but also have a 2 way one which i want to use to adjust boost in the car.
can u explain to me how to set max boost under the bonnet and where to plumb in the 2 way one (i.e which pipes)

Thanks, Jay

Answer:
Put the three way into the frontmost actuator pipe with the middle connection going into the car. At the end of this pipe, fit the two way valve and run a waste pipe from the other side of this back into the engine bay and fresh air.
With the in car valve set to maximum, open the three way valve a little at a time and test until the max required boost is set.
Then close the two way valve until extra boost is required.

Subject: Oil Spraying??

Question:
I have oil spraying all over my engine and it looks like it is coming from the rocker cover or pipes. I have had a good look round and tighened my rocker cover but this has not helped. I have also noticed I have oil coming from the exhaust.

Help me what is wrong?

Answer:
Sounds like you may have a ring sealing problem causing crankcase pressure build up.
Get a cylinder compression check done to test for worn rings.

Subject: Fitting a turbo on a standard 5

Question:
Hi,
I am looking to add a bit more oomph to my 5. I have a standard 5 (1.4 tse).A mate told me that I could add a turbo to it but looking at the prices of turbos I don't know if it would be worth it. Would it be easy to do or is it something that a garage would do for me? Also could I use a turbo from a standard phase II (there's one in the breakers yard). If I cant do this is there anything else I could do ass at my age I can't afford the insurance on a real GT yet.
Thanks

Answer:
Sorry its not worth the effort and the insurance will be more than a standard GTT as the rest of the car isn't up to spec.

Question:
Hi Wizard

I have a 92 Clio with a 1990 R5 turbo
engine and i was wondering if the CAT could be removed and still pass a MOT as it was left on after the conversion, as i was'nt sure what to do with it, i thinks it's on cars after aug 92 that they must not be removed, but the as engine is older than the car what do i do?

Thanks

Ellis :-)

It will go on the car not the engine age.

Remove the cat for normal use but keep it for MOT Time to prevent any hassles!

Subject: oil/water mixing

Question:
Dear wizard, I’ve been getting mayonnaise type mixture in my water expansion bottle for about 4K miles now. The leak can't be massive because I’m not loosing to much oil and I’m only having to flush the system every thousand miles to avoid any clogging problems. The oil looks clean and uncontaminated. Am I right in thinking that the leak could be any of these things; cracked engine block, cracked cylinder head, turbo? I’ve changed the turbo so I know it’s not this. Could it be the gasket even though the engine still performs ok? Is there any way I can source the leak without having to take the head off?

Answer:
It is most likely head gasket or radiator/oil cooler cracked.

Get a pressure test done on the engine and cooling systems to determine the fault.
