Subject: No power

Question:
Wizard, my car seems to have no power. Its running 13psi, exhaust and filter, when accelerating there seems to be a big hesitation, not turbo lag, but like the engine is somehow holding back. It gets through this but never really seams to get going, feels slower than a standard car. Any tips on what to start looking for.

Cheers

Answer:
Try the fuel filter or pump.

Subject: smokey/tappy

Question:
hi wizz, ive just replaced the turbo, new head gasket etc,the problem is that ive set the tappets 4 times now and i still get a tappet sound to go with this i get a lot of smoke(exhuast) that smells oilly when at idle but she dosent smoke or smell at all when under load, i changed the valve stem seals and reground the valves in head was checked and was fine. any ideas as im all out of them. ta,

Answer:
The tappet noise could actually be a manifold gasket failure.
As for the smoke, it really sounds like turbo seals or stem seals but could be ring related possibly.

Subject: illegal exhausts

Question:
alright wiz do you know about the laws concerning exhausts because the police round here are nicking people with non standard exhausts as they call them over forty in the last two weeks £100 fine £100 costs i know you said about the noise 108 db . cheers happy christmas

Answer:
Non standard exhausts are perfectly legal as long as they conform to noise levels.
If you get stopped then ask them to get environmental health out to test the noise unless they are carrying a decibel meter.
If they try to do you without proof then take it to court.

Subject: pinking

Question:
hi,when i run about 15 psi and acclerate hard my car starts to pink.what could it be and how can i sort it.

Answer:
Use super unleaded if you are not already doing so.
Get the timing/fuelling checked preferably on a rolling road.
or
Turn the boost down! It could be that your head has been skimmed too much or maybe even a faulty intercooler.

Subject: Gearbox

Question:
Can anyone get hold of the tech. drawings for the R5 gearbox (mines an '89)? I am going to stip the box down for a rebuild and the drawings would be helpful, if not the end float would do.

Cheers

Answer:
Try the Blue Haynes manual.
If you ask nicely on the boards, i'm sure someone will scan them in for you.

Subject: More power

Question:
I have completely stripped my R5 for a rebuild. The engine will be having new pistons, liners, big and small ends, uprated head gasket, seals, etc. I have spoke to a few companies and I am geeting mixed answers. I want my baby around 180-190 bhp, what do you recommend?

cheers

Answer:
Good exhaust, air filter, Uprated T2 or T25 turbo, larger/better intercooler, maybe headwork and cam. Expect to run at least 20 psi.

Subject: oil in expansion bottle

Question:
Wiz,
I was having a load of oil getting into my expansion bottle so i thought the head gasket was shot so i replaced it and i'm still getting oil through.my temperature doesn't rise and it runs fine.i also have just replaced the turbo and not long ago the rad so would you have any other ideas where it could be mixing.thanks

Answer:
It could be a cracked head or block or possibly a slight leak from the liner seal but that usually means water in the oil more.

Subject: Turning up boost

Question:
Hey, just wondering how to turn up the boost, i have a standard car with an air filter and exhuast done. I hear that you can do this by adjusting the actuator (make the arm shorter?) I undid the nut but thats not it. Do you need to remove the arm and screw it up a little?
Any help would be good, thanks

Answer:
Remove the small circlip that holds the actuator arm to the wastegate lever. Swear because you have dropped it! undo the locknut and screw the arm to make it shorter. Try it a turn or two at a time and test. When you have the desired boost level then tighten locknut and refit circlip.

Subject: Water inj 3

Question:
Wiz, would the advance retard need altering with the w/i ,if so would the wire swap on the timing sensor be worth while, like in the tuning section .

Answer:
Timing will not NEED altering but more power may be gained if ignition is advanced. Timing sensor mod could be a good move but make sure the car doesn't pink.

Question:
My car wont start ! Its had a new battery and alternator but the starter motor just clicks or turns the engine real slow !!!

Once its running, jumped or bumped, the system charges itself OK. But when I switch it off.....no joy

Its got to be the starter motor hasnt it cos the damn thing wont turn the engine or it turns reeeeeeaaaaalllllllllllllly slowly...

The connections seem OK but Ill double check.

Happy Xmas and New Year aswell !!!

Answer:
Poor connections will cause current problems as will corroded cables or a lazy starter motor.

Subject: Too much FUEL!!

Question:
Hi Wiz, I've just rebuilt my carb and re-jetted with a 130 main jet, I now get 80 miles to £20 of fuel! Even when I had a standard carb I was still only getting 110 miles to £20! I've got quite a heavy foot but I would of thought I would get better fuel economy that that.

Cheers

Answer:
Sounds like you need to get the fuelling set up correctly on a rolling road.
You will save the cost of the tune in only a few tanks of fuel!

Subject: smokey/tappy 2?

Question:
ahh wizz in response to your answer to my last ?... can you tell wot u mean by failure, its brand new and only done a bout 200 mile on it, wot should i look for?? the turbo is brand new only done 20 mile on it so i guess its the rings, wot do i need to look for? and this may be a silly one for u but do valve stem seals only go on one way?? im gonna take the engine out is there any thing else that should be replaced while its out, within reason cheers m8, hoo hoo and all that

Answer:
It could be that the gasket has split or it is more likely that some of the manifold nuts are loose.

Get the rings compression tested wet and dry to compare readings.

Valve stem seals will only go on one way.

If clutch is not recent then it may be worth uprating/replacing.
It may also be prudent to replace the lower gaskets/sump seal as this is easier with the engine out.

Money will dictate mods but balancing is a good idea.

Subject: Rocker cover breathing

Question:
Hey Mr Knowledge,

Had my sump off at the weekend and learnt that the one of the pipes that extracts the fumes from the rocker cover travels along the bottom of the sump - i guess below the oil level.
1 - why is it below the oil level?
2 - why does it go from one side of the sump to the other?

Thanks in advance Mr Wizzo!

Answer:
The fumes are condensed back into oil in the pot which sits at the end of the head. This long pipe is to stop oil getting up to the pot and coming out through the breather system.

Subject: 1.8 16v conversion.

Question:
I've seen the 1.8 16v engine conversion on prima's site and was wondering, (a) is this engine as tweakable as the standard 1.4 lump, (b) is there anything to seriously worry about when getting it done (i.e. reliability...etc), and (c) does it make that much differance, really? cheers wizard!

Answer:
You are probably better off spending the money on the 1.4 these days as there is much more available for it and it will get more power for the money and will be just as reliable.
The 1.8 turbo conversion is better for clio or 19 16V owners.

Subject: power

Question:
hi whizz thanx for all your help, mate i need more power at the mo iam running 13psi with air filter scorpion exaust and uprated head gasket iam looking for 180bhp, the way i would go would be a larger turbo large intercooler and what about the clutch can i run 180 on a standard clutch ,what about the volvo 440 clutch take that amount of horses, what cam would you recommend.do you think i would have problems with pistons small end etc,if i didn't balance the bottom end cheers wiz

Answer:
Go for about 20psi or less with a cam and/or head.
Engine balancing is allways a good idea as it helps the car rev more smoothly. The volvo clutch is fine for power but may be a little heavy if you don't do the soft pedal conversion as well.
Cam choice is a very personal thing. You may want a subtle performer like the K-Tec item or something wilder like a Piper 285 or even a GDI 292. Phone round the tuners asking them how their cam acts with power bands etc. You may well be better off getting the turbo etc matched to the cam.

Subject: why me???

Question:
hey wiz merry xmas. well where do i start ?? firstly as i was driving home from work my car started backfire-ing and then kept cutting out. the engine temp was halfway and oil temp was 80deg it seemed like there was no fuel but if i kept it revving over 1600rpm it kept runningand soon as i let off it stalls.but i was told after a crypting tune up i had a littte under fueling prob but its been ok for 3 weeks now this has happened.i have replaced the fuel filter and pump. any idea what to do about this as it wont drive like this and i need it for work. 2) i have done the cup mod and my cylinder head has been flowed and now my boost pressure is only about 6/7 psi is this normal? 3) what temp should a copper cored rad be? as mine sits bout half way but been told it should be lower than that? 4) is there any one close to norwich who u know of could test my car to see all is ok as im starting to get worried about the amount of problems im getting.plz help with a speedy reply cause im up sh1t creek without a paddle.thanks in advance.

Answer:
merry xmas to you too wavey beer
some things come to mind check the resistance of the fly wheel pick up should be around 200ohms
its poss your carb needs a clean out and setting up
when you done the cup mod did you change any of the pipes on the drivers side of the black intake elbow if so put them back as theye where
when doing the cup mod its common to have to turn the actuator up a bit

Subject: Whinning

Question:
My mates gearbox has started whinning majorly loud in 2nd and a little in 5th, i was just wondering whether its the gear itself that whines, or is it a bearing or something?

Cheers

Answer:
Could be bearings but they normally whine in all gears.
I expect that the oil level is low or oil is old to make the worn gears sound louder.

Subject: boost gauge

Question:
wiz man, Is the standard boost gauge usually accurate or are they crap? My car is supposedly standard and so is my mates but on his gauge he only boosts half way and mine boosts just into the red. cant race him cos hes off the road so dont know which car is quicker. Also tacho seems to be about 300-400 rpm out(tick over says 1400 but engine says approx 900). Is this normal? cheers mate!

Answer:
The gauges are fairly consistant but it may be that your actuator has been adjusted to give more boost than his car.
Tacho should be accurate as it is electronic and fed by the ignition module. It could be down to dodgy connections effecting the signal.

Subject: egine trouble

Question:
hello all might one......you answered a question of mine last week concerning the problem with the car cutting out and loss of power........you put your verdict down to the fuel filter, or the pump...........how can i tell it is one of these and not a serious problem like the head gasket failure that i thought i had....................oh and i have had the car for almost two years and i have never changed the fuel filter........could that be clogged?????????/..........please help......thanx

Answer:
Firstly, change the filter as it is only a few pounds.
If this doesn't cure the problem then get the car compression tested to check the head gasket etc.

Subject: felt a right tw@t

Question:
Wiz man, just pulled off from lights and gave it some, it pulled off, boosted, then cut out. I tried to start and it started but wouldn't tick over. Could only keep it going by pumping pedal and it was banging and farting and wouldnt run properly at all. Had to slip the clutch all the way home in first. Then suddenly it cleared and reved like a good un. took it slow the rest of the way but now i dont trust it. any ideas?

Answer:
Check the mixture screw is still in the carb. It could also have been a fuel blockage in the filter or jets.

Subject: Lack of Boost

Question:
Hi Wiz I wonder if you can help me? I am suddenly having problems with a lack of boost, or a struggle to boost( I was running 20-25psi). My dumpvalve stopped dumping yesterday and first of all I thought it had packed up so I removed it and blanked the hole but no change. I cannot find any leaks and it is boosting a bit but not much, could my actuator be playing up? How can I test it? Also what is the purpose of two dump valves, I have seen some set ups with one piston and one diaphram and some with two diaphrams why?

Answer:
If you have an alloy double capacity intercooler then it may be split at the bottom weld which can only be seen with the intercooler removed. It is unlikely to be the actuator but it may have split it's diaphram. Remove the front pipe to the actuator and blow down it hard. If the arm moves then it is ok.

As for the dump valves, some people believe it is louder where others just want them for looks or diaphram reliability.
If there are two types used then it is probably due to having got one cheap! wink

Answer:
You need to check the relay situated next to the ignition module as this controls the ignition module which in turn controls the fuel pump relay signal.

Subject: How big can I go?

Question:
How big a wheel can I put on the beast without losing speed and without the speedo needing adjusting?

Answer:
Most people believe that 15"" wheels with 195/45/15 tyres is as close to standard as possible. Most tyres vary due to tread depth etc as well so you can never be completely as standard.

Subject: water injection

Question:
merry xmas wizard i have another question i have a charge cooler should i mount a alloy intercooler with it or put water injection kit on with it which way would be better and keep the car more cooler so i can run more boost safley?
p.s have a happy new year

Answer:
If you fit an intercooler as well you will get some benifits but i expect water injection would be a better bet.
Malcolm Rouse has a charge cooler on his car controlled by a inlet temperature sensor. This is all he needs but maybe he uses less boost than you are planning.
