Subject: CUTS OUT UNDER LOAD! Question: hi, new to the club via purchase of an ill r5,need all help i can get.start of a new project.on the left of carb theres a clear pipe thats off one end and i cant see where it goes,as its melted! also on the electronic ignition box on the bulkhead theres 3 black plugs with wires coming out of them but the yellow one that doesnt go back into plug isnt connected to anything, is this for the suppresser? also if anyone would like to offer any help for cash to help me get up and running id appreciate all/any help. Answer: Right lets make a start, Firstly, where are you looking at the carb from? If it is the pipe coming out of the triangle shaped part of the carb on its own on the side nearest the centre of the car (left hand side if you are looking from drivers seat!)then it is just going to atmoshere. It is to prevent fuel from getting onto the engine/exhaust if the diaphram splits in the carb. The plugs on the Ignition module should be connected to:- 1) Timing sensor. (Top of gear box) 2) Knock sensor. (front of head) 3) Battery positive etc for power. 4) Small wire to suppressor. (On ignition module itself) All cash should be sent to Turbo Wizards retirement fund, RTOC.

Subject: vibration at 3000 rpm Question: hi wiz, i have a vibration at around 3000 rpm regardless of gear selected and roadspeed. If i go above 3000 rpm i can ""drive through"" the vibration and below 3000 the car is perfect. It is the same sort of vibration as a knackered wheel bearing but happens regardless of roadspeed. Oil pressure is 70psi at 3000rpm and 30psi at idle. The car is completely standard. Gratefull for any help. Cheers mate!! Answer: It mcould be some sort of balance problem, possibly due to the clutch or maybe due to the ignition module. Try fitting a different module from a friends car to see if it cures the problem. |

Subject: temp gauge Question: no matter how hot the car is the temp gauge want work also the speedo is out. it allways reads 10 when still and only goes to 35 40 even when im doing well over 95, help Answer: Sounds like the temp sender wires are off or broken or maybe the sender fitted to the water pump is faulty. Speedos are a common problem but it could be down to the sensor on the gearbox or the grey and black connector near the air filter box. |

Subject: Electrical problems! Question: Hi, Recently my battery light on my 5 has started lighting. It goes away when I put my foot down. Im not running anything too fancy (just a cd player/amp/sub..but this has been fine for about 6 months). Tonight i went to take it out and it wouldn't start. I got a jump and it was going but as soon as I turned it off i wouldn't start again (it made even less of an effort then before). When it finally got going I went for a spin and after about 20 mins of driving all my lights went dim and my petrol gauge suddenly dropped from 20 to 10. Now it wont start at all!! Any ideas?? Thanks Answer: I would say that the alternator is faulty. Get it checked out or replaced with a spare. |

Subject: Bleed valve Question: My car has a bleed valve but one side was blanked off when i got it! Dp motorsport recently had the car and wound the bleed valve fully in thinking it would turn the boost down but on the way home the wheels were spinning in third and the boost guage was reading 2 bar i pulled over and wound the bleed screw nearly all the way out and the boost has returned to about .6 bar! do bleed valves usually act this way or is mine shot? Answer: I would say that your valve is a different design to normal but as long as you know how to adjust it then its fine. |

Subject: Oil pressure Question: Could you please tell my why my oil pressure drops during hard driving. I.e when the boost is on full. Are the piston rings worn? Is it normal in a 5 Is a breather blocked Thanks Andy Answer: It could be the oil getting thinner due to the temperature or just a faulty sender. |

Subject: Fuel pump ralay Question: Could you please tell me where the fuel pump relay is on my car, I have a 1989 G plate, Ive been told its at the bottom right next to the fuse box, This would be the smallest of the three that are there, is this the right one, also is there a way i can test it without splashing out £47 for a new one. Thanks Answer: It is a largish relay with 6 wires coming out of it. Try bridging the main positive wires to give 12v at the pump without the relay. If it cures the fault then replace as soon as possible rather than risking fire from the bodged wire. |

Subject: perc fan Question: when vehicle is up to normal operating temperature the perc fan works continually when the engine is running. It shuts off 10-15 mins after switching off engine, should it run when engine is running. Also is there a low fuel light supposed to work on the dash?thanks for any help Answer: The perc fan works when the sensors on the turbo heatshield and carb tell it to. It may or may not work when the engine is running. Yes the low fuel light should come on. It may be a blown bulb or a wiring fault. |

Subject: Hard Brakes Question: I have recently had the brakes fail on me due to hard pedal. I have checked the Valve on the servo.Seems OK. Servo doesn't seem to have any pressure however I was told that the servo are very reliable. I Have noticed that the vacuum hose from the base of the carb has very little suction(NONE). Have taken valve??? from the base of the carb and No air will pass through it. Is this Correct???? Tony B Answer: Sounds like the valve is seized, it should pass air on suction only. |

Subject: Milage countdown Question: Hello Mr W', Could you please give me some information regarding the way the milage is recorded on the dash board in me' 5 turbo? I understand that it is electronic, and that possibly a sensor on the final drive or simular picks up a signal from magnet and reads this and thus counting this as one 'pulse' My questions are:- 1. How many pulses are there to one mile? 2. do you know of anybody that could possibly make a digital countdown from 3000 to 0000 so that I do not forget to change my oil. Many thanks Andy S Answer: 1) No idea, sorry. 2) See above! |

Subject: door sag Question: Hi wiz. Is there any easy way to stop my door from droping, the hinge pins seem to be the cause, it means i have to really slam the door to make it shut flush with the body..... could I just fit new pins or would the hinges need replacing.....thanks for your help. my car should be on it way to a major revamp once I sort out all the nigly bits Answer: You can fit new pins but if there is too much wear then you need to replace the hinges which is quite a major job. A cheap alternative is to use a jack with a block of wood on it to jack up the door to bend the hinges past there normal point and this will allow for the drop. |

Subject: Oil pressure Question: Since i bought the car the oil light on the dash hasnt worked. i think ive found the orange wire for the switch, but i'm not sure where it goes. (or where the oil pressure switch is). Does it pick up off the oil pressure guage sensor? Also my car is equipped with a low temp fan switch. the thermostat is an 82 degrees one. will the thermostat still open with the low temp fan switch cutting in so low? Finally, my car has a 7/88 engine, will a sump of a 7/82 engine fit? Cheers Answer: The oil pressure sensor has two wires on it, one for the pressure and one for the light. The thermostat has to be open for the hot water to get to the fan switch! Yes the 782 sump will fit. |

Subject: Selecting gears Question: Hi Wiz, Recently but not every time I take her out, after driving for a while and I come to a stop, she won't drop into first at all (nor any gear that I try plus a lot of crunching if I try to find reverse). Maybe thirty seconds of trying later she'll go into gear OK and I can drive off. What do you reckon? If it helps the clutch pedal always used to, since I bought her in the summer, go down in two steps if you know what I mean. It would go down about 2/3s easily then the last third was a bit harder. Then after a couple of months the clutch pedal suddenly went in normally as you would expect but to be honest it's since then (about 2 months ago) that the clutch problem started (the pedal is also very squeaky). Its been suggested that the clutch assembly be changed? Sorry about the long question but I tried to give you as much info as possible! Gareth Answer: It could be down to cable stretch, incorrect cable fitted, incompatable cable/pedal segment or a worn clutch assembly. |

Any suggestions greatfully appreciated. Regards Munish Answer: If the connectors don't touch and are not able to be bent to touch then i would say that the heater unit will have to be replaced. |

Subject: Water inj. Question: wiz if i fit a water inj. kit do i need to alter the timing,ie retard the ignition or anything else .And what do you recommend in the tank(water methanol mix) half and half not sure.Your advice once again would be grateful. Answer: Timing can be setup on the rolling road to probably a little more advance than normal. Mix should be somewhere between 25% and 50% methanol which again can be adjusted due to rolling road settings. |
