Subject: Can I use these gauges?

Question:
Dear Mr. Wizard.

I am wanting to get a nice set of gauges to use on my R5. I have seen some I like, the Defi Range. BUT - they seem very ""electronic"". Am I going to be able to use these, or are they to modern for our cars? I hope you can help me smile

Answer:
Most aftermarket gauges use there own sensors which are either supplied or available from the manufacturer.

Subject: misfire?

Question:
hi wiz got a good 1 for u,car has just started to develop a fault when driving steady after about 30 miles car starts to misfire as if it is chokin up?went onto 3 cylinders the other day so found that it was no 4 cylinder replaced lead no better, replaced plug then its ok,took it on motorway after 10 mins starts to choke up and misfire again,if i keep it at 3500 and keep it on and off boost the car is fine, replaced leads, plugs, cap+rotar tday but is no better, checked all the carb screws and jets all ok and the co at idle is 1.50% hc 150,ive ordered a new ignition coil tday to c if its that but im clutchin at straws, cause i dont know if its a fuelling fault or ignition fault, can u shine any light please??????

Answer:
Might be worth fitting a new fuel filter. If this doesn't work then it could be fuel pump/relay. Doubt it is electrical as you have changed all the parts that are likely to go intermittant.

Subject: how low can i go?

Question:
i have brought a r5 and it been dropped bout 30 mm.
im gettin some 15"" wheels, and i wanna drop it to the floor.
can you advise me of what springs/shocks to get.
and what arce mods will i need doin?
im only really up for rolling the arches-so how low can i go for this.
thanks for ure help.

Answer:
Rolled arches and lip removed will allow drops of anything up to about 80-100mm with coilovers.
Make sure the tyres are 195/45/15 as they are very close to original rolling radius. 195/50/15 are cheaper but WILL rub.

Subject: psi

Question:
what is the maximum psi that a turbo technics stage three charger will run at, or what is turbo technic spec for this turbo? thanks...

Answer:
Better ask turbo technics!

Subject: Recommended maximum boost

Question:
Hey Wiz, What would the recommended maximum boost be before you would expect big problems with pukka head bolts 12.9 and a top spec head gasket???

Answer:
If fuelling is correct and the cooling system is fine then I have seen people like Bruce hit 66psi with no problems. (Apart from the liners he split!)
I don't think there is a normal max but 35psi should be no problem at all.

Subject: evo vent

Question:
hi, my car is in the garage ready for painting and im wanting to put an evo vent in the bonnet, the bloke whos doing the work says that it will allow lots of water to get in and may make the car run s**t, i want the vent ative so it will let out heat and keep the engine a bit cooler, the holes will be near the dizzy, would the water do the car any harm??
thanks a lot.

Answer:
The water will get on the dizzy etc and will cause problems.
Consider fitting some sort of removable cover to go over the vent for when the car is stationary.

Subject: Not adjusting boost

Question:
I have just got a new standard turbo. It only boosted to 8psi when first fitted which i beleive is standard, the trouble is that i can't adjust the boost. Adjusting the actuator rod has no effect and neither does the adjust boost. The bleed/v has three pipes. One to front actuator, one to carb top and one to vent. Is there a particular order/way in which the bleed valve ports are to be connected to the boost circuit and is it possible i may have a weak actuator spring?

Cheers wiz

Answer:
I would try reversing the pipes on the actuator as it sounds to me like you have them on back to front.

Subject: head gasket

Question:
I just put my new engine in the car with all new parts and gasket, have warmed the car up and left it to cool then re-torqued it as you should. But yesterday after a short drive i started getting white smoke from the exhaust, from the look and smell of it, it was water vapour. It didnt seem to go away so I left it over night and ran it today, smoked again but after about 5 minutes it stopped smoking near enough so I was quite pleased! but then I started getting oily smoke! When it ran the temp got above half as the fan didnt work, could heat be the cause? All the while I was driving there wasnt a puff of smoke but when I pulled up it started the smoke. The head gasket is an uprated one and I also have wire ringed liners...any ideas?

Answer:
I would say the initial smoke was residuals in the exhaust but after that it sounds like turbo seals or valve stem seals.

Subject: Spindel removal

Question:
Wiz, could you tell me how to remove the choke spindal on my gpA carb. The reason is that when starting from cold ,if i use the choke it just seems to flood ,but if i hold the revs using throttle instead of choke its perfect, when it warms up(retaining fast idle).Ive noticed the 2 grub screws holding it on but thought it might be a bit more complicated than that.Your help is much needed thanx Adam

Answer:
If you just remove the choke flap then it is just two screws but the spindle is a little more complicated and the holes need to be sealed to prevent running problems.

Subject: BIGGEST BHP RENAULT

Question:
Who has the most powerful, bhp single engined, 1400cc, renault 5 turbo, on forecourt fuel & no NOS? And who also has the most torque on a single engined, 1400cc renault 5 turbo, on forecourt fuel & no NOS? And finally who has proved it, with power read outs to show. I know such cars are around & what are the chances of the club getting them together to battle it out on the rollers?

Answer:
I have no idea who has the most powerfull car on pump fuel.
Most big bhp cars use additives or race fuel to ensure there is no detonation.

Subject: Oil Pressure

Question:
When i turn my ignition on the oil pressure gauge reads between 4-5 but when i start the engine its drops to the same position as when the ignition is off(below 0) i know i have an oil leak on the pipe that goes into the turbo but would this be the cause of the gauges behaviour? or could it be a faulty switch?

whats the best oil to use in the 5 gt turbo?

cheers wiz!

Answer:
When you initially turn the ignition on you are showing oil level and once the engine starts you are seeing oil pressure.
I would say that you have either a faulty pressure sensor (in the turbo oil feed pipe) or more likely the wire has come off or broken.
Best oil is probably 15W50 like mobil one motorsport.

Subject: maybe big problems ?

Question:
hi wiz, got a few more questions 4 ya.
firstly) my engine has been rebulit and now running but its now a bi**h to start when cold and when i turn the car off i get a pop any ideas why.
2) my water tank some times fills up with a brown froth and i have no ideas what it is. as it has had a new head gasket new linear seals and there not cracked either. the head is also flat. and im not loosing any oil etc and the engines temp is fine but rad is a bit suspect and wont work as it should so i have switched the main fan to work all the time.
3) i now have probs with the dash board speedo and mile counter not working at all and none of the bulbs workin either a part from the ones on the left side like rear heater etc and the oil pressure gauge wont work now either. but the rev counter still works ok.
4) how many miles do u recommend for a running in period?
5) would a turbo unit from a nissian 200sx be any good on a renault as it will go on the 5 manifold and the turbo blades are a little bigger? sorry bout big questions but nearly starting to lose faith in the old girl. cheers 4 the help. makaveli

Answer:
1) Check the timing and dizzy drive position.

2) Brown froth is rusty coolant from rad or block. Ensure you flush out the system and refil with correct water/anti freeze mix.

3) Check that the wiring loom is correctly secured on the back of the dash.

4) As many as possible with at least 1500-2000.

5) Some hybrids use parts from the 200sx but not sure how the complete turbo would run, try it and tell me!

Keep the faith, long live the 5!

Subject: Head gasket 2

Question:
Hello again Wiz thanx for replying to the last one, the water like smoke seems to have stopped(for now) but I got a whisp of blue smoke when it got warm and it smelt like a mixture of oil and fuel burning. I did a compression test and got 8 bar in each cylinder so I dont think the head gasket has gone, but i noticed the spark plugs where quite black and sooty so I replaced the fuel mixture screw and adjusted the fuel as good as I could and then smoke seemed to clear again! Ill check the valve stem oil seals havent lifted as they were new ones and probably quite stiff on the valves. As for the turbo, the shaft feels good and theres not much play and when I drove it before I took the old engine out there wasnt any smoke at all so I think its still good. Ill check the pipework for oil. Fingers X'ed theres no smoke today!wink

Answer:
I will keep my fingers crossed too.

Subject: oil

Question:
i'm using castrol gtx 15w40 oil, is this too thin, could this be why its smoking?

I doubt it but if you feel the need to go to thicker oil, then do it.

Subject: Bodykits

Question:
Where can i get a decent bodykit from.? I know that they stopped making the skeete bodykit but I still want to get one......!!!!! do you have any idea where I could possibly get one.....HELP PLEASE I've been searching everywhere.

Answer:
You can still get a wide arched kit similar to the skeete item from Carlton but i think the quality is a little poor as it is copied from a kit rather than from decent moulds.
I think you would be better off with something like the K-Tec kit as it is much better quality and cheaper due to not needing new wide wheels etc.

Subject: Spindal 2

Question:
wiz, if i remove the choke flap with the 2 grub screws surely the radius of the spindal decreases thus as u said running probs or is it just me.If i got the spindal out what would u seal it with?Thanx for help.

Answer:
I would get some small plugs made to fit or find some bar that fits and bond it into place. Carb will need setting up properly afterwards to allow for better flow.

Subject: Could it be.???

Question:
Howz it goin' wiz? Just a quick one for ya...i know it sounds like headgasket failure but i'm trying to convince myself its not as it was changed a few months ago... NOT losing water,(or overheating),compressions even ,but have mayo under oil cap and white smoke from exhaust (NOT ALL THE TIME),any ideas. Thanks again....

Answer:
I am fine young'un, thanks for asking.

You will get a little mayo in the breather system etc if you only do short runs due to condensation. This could also be what the smoke from the exhaust is.
The car needs a good 20 miles plus to get rid of all the shite from the system and it will also get the oil fully up to temp.
I would say to clean out the rocker cover and breather system pipes and then go for a long run in the car keeping an eye on the temperature etc and see if this cures the problem.

Subject: fuelling

Question:
alright wiz,im running a strapped and flowed i/cooler,piperx induction kit and a 135 main jet and a standard air corrector jet, what sort of boost should i be able to run on super unleaded fuel?and also would it be better to use a .9 air corrector as well?

Answer:
I would say that with the 0.9mm jet as well then you should be fine for up to about 18psi as long as the intercooler holds out, but 16 would be safer.

Subject: In-Car Boost

Question:
Now I've had my kit fitted, how does the bl---y thing work? I don't wanna try it cos' I've heard of blown engines etc.
I have silicon boost hoses and alloy intercooler fitted. Anything else I need b4 I go for a burn? (Waiting on a boost gauge) Tks...Brian

Answer:
With the in car knob fully open, Turn the max boost knob from fully closed to open a fraction at a time until you find the maximum you want and then lock it off. Then you can adjust from standard to maximum on the in car knob with no worries.

Subject: loss of water

Question:
ive just bought a gt turbo which the previous owner did the head gasket on without having the head skimmed, now the coolant is getting into the oil and i dont want to go and do the head again and find its one of the linners or something, what should i do........or should i just get bb performance to fit there recon black engine for £1099.00

Answer:
You could go safely to the black engine if you can afford it.
If you do not have access to a cylinder pressure differential tester (and know what to do with it) I would recommend whipping the head off and getting the head checked for flatness.
It will almost deffinately be warped.
You can check the liners etc for cracks while the head is off.

Subject: drained battery/flickering rev counter

Question:
My battery ran flat the other day. On the way home the previous night whenever I turned on the fan heater and rear screen heater, the rev indicator needle went mad??
We have changed the battery but now the battery light on the dash is constantly on when the ignition is off. It goes out when the ignition is on but the rev counter needle flickers up and down whenever the electrics are loaded. The alternator is also doing alot of vibrating, so would you suspect the alternator or do I have a short somewhere else?

Answer:
I would say that the alternator is completely goosed.
Try your local auto electricians to get it tested before replacing it.

Subject: knackered, and fed up

Question:
i need your help and fast, my five cracked two liners within about three days of running and finally found out it was the ecu leaking and causing detonation having now put a different carb on it it runs fine but i gave it a bit of stick the other night and the turbo spun up and then died, the engine didn't stop running it just seemed like the turbo stopped. it does boost up sometimes but other it just seems like there is a split in the boost hoses and you can hear a hissing sound, also if you put it in 5th or sometimes 4th and touch the accelerator it makes a wired popping noise which sounds like it is comin from the fuel tank there isn;t any splits in the hoses or the charge cooler and sometimes it goes fine of maybe 2 gears but then half way through the third gear the boost just drops off, there is also nothing wrong with the turbo and it is spinning up its just not going into the engine help me please asap before i burn it!!!!!!

Answer:
This is a very strange sounding fault or more likely a combination of faults.
The boost problem could be due to the actuator or its pipework.
Do you have the valve that goes on the bulkhead with a pipe to the boost hose? If so remove the pipe and block the hole in the main boost pipe.

Get back to me if you need more help.

Subject: clear fogs

Question:
can i get these off any other renault or will i have to pay silly money £50 plus vat to some company? cheers also free flowing exhausts a good thing or do i need bacjk pressure k-tec say free flow gt tuning say not to free flowing??

Answer:
I believe the renault 21 uses the same white fogs but they cost about the same from renault as the after market ones do and have usually got to be ordered.

As for the exhaust, Free flowing is good as long as the turbo has the double type seals. It may be that GT Tuning use turbo seals that need backpressure to prevent oil leakage.

I recommend the K-Tec system highly as long as you don't have a GT Tuning turbo.
