Subject: T28 On a 5

Question:
HI there wizard,

Will a garrett T28 from another car fit on my renault (turbo is from a skyline I think)
As all garrett fitments ues the same style manifold fittings, so is it just a question of size ??

Cheers Wiz

Ben

Answer:
Ben,

The garrett T28 will fit on the 5 with some magic dust, but be careful to select the correct air ratio's otherwise it will take a millenium to produce boost pressure!

Best of luck

Wiz.

Subject: Where can i get an air ratio housing from ??

Question:
The T28 I mentioned earlier Is it fairly easy to swap the exhaust housing over ???

Also I have got an erl water injetion kit Where do you recommend fitting the water jet ???
any idea of the size jet i would need ??

cheers
Ben

Answer:
Get a pro to do the turbo and get it rebalanced after to retain reliability.

You could put the water jet in the dump valve T piece, carb top, boost hose etc. your choice really. Try asking someone like Europarts for advice.

Subject: Raising boost level

Question:
Please could you tell me the 'safest way' to raise my boost level currently 12 psi & 16 psi in car electronic switch, my car has a uprated fuel pump, new hybrid, volvo clutch , copper rad & various other up grades, would i need a charge cooler & uprated head gasket to run say 19 / 20 psi ( not all the time 'incar switch' for to vary boost ) my main priority is relability ! would raising the boost without the above cause problems? your advice would be appreciated. regards michael

Answer:
I know a few cars that use 20-22psi on a completely standard engine with hybrid and bigger cooler/pump etc.

They are fine but are lowish mileage and well looked after(no offence intended to you!)

Make sure you get the fuelling set for whatever boost you use to prevent pinking and engine problems.

Subject: Losing boost

Question:
Dear Wizard
Recently on a rolling road I did a power run which returned 170bhp and 236lb/ft
The problem is that the boost pressure kept dropping away as the run progressed .i.e. 25psi then down to 18psi this meant that the peak bhp was at 3900rpm. This only occurs on the rollers and will stay at 25psi on the road. No wheelspin or climbout occured. Any ideas on what is causing this and how can I prevent it cos I need a graph showing over 200bhp !!!!

Answer:
Sounds to me like heat soak into your intercooler is causing problems as the airflow at a rolling road is not as fast as the actual airflow on the road. If you can find an old CO2 fire extinguisher, spray the intercooler to cool it and see if the power rises again!

(I take it you have an uprated fuel pump? If not get one!!!)

Subject: Harnesses

Question:
Wiz, if you fit harnesses to your 5 do you still have to retain the original seat belts for m.o.t ing
also the same question for taking the rear seats out.Keep up the excellent work....

Answer:
If the rear seats are removed then the belts can be taken out too.
The front harnesses must be of an approved type or you will need to keep the front belts in for the MOT and just take them out afterwards.

Subject: Dump Valve

Question:
i have recently fitted a dump valve to my raider, but when i start the egine the valve will open fully drawing in air, as the revs increase the valve will slowly shut, only when at high revs will it the let enought pressure build up for a good noise on release. i only have one pipe comming from the Ecu through the bukhead, has my ecu had it?

Answer:
I take it you mean you ""T""ed into the ECU pipe??
This would be correct.

Subject: Turbo stopped working

Question:
The other day my turbo just stopped working there was no smoke or any noises has the turbo gone or could it be something else. the turbo is a standard one it's done 120,000 miles and has been put upto max boost 20,000 miles ago

Answer:
Take the elbow off the front of the turbo, if the blades cannot be turned easily by finger tips then the turbo has seized. If it spins freely then there must be a boost leak at the intercooler or one of the pipes.

Subject: Using loads of water

Question:
I noticed the other day my car is using loads of water i can fill the bottle up go for a little drive and when i get back it's nearly all gone it's doing this all the time,i have look and it not leaking from anywhere any ideas

Answer:
Sounds like the head gasket has gone, the head has cracked or a liner has split.

Get it pressure tested at a local garage to confirm the diagnosis.

Subject: Boost presure

Question:
My old turbo has just gone it was a standard one put up to max boost when i fit my new one do i have to set the pressure again and if so how easy is it.

Answer:
It depends on if the new turbo comes with an actuator or not.

If it does then it should be preset and changing it will invalidate most warrenties.

If not then try it and see! Pressures can be set by shortening or lengthening the actuator arm length.

Subject: Rev Limiter

Question:
IF my peak power is at 6750 rpm where is the best place the set my rev limiter as if i change at peak power then i may not be extracting the quickest 0-60 times / standing quarter due to the power curves of the engine. As the rev limiter is only there to prevent serious over revving could I set it to 7000 rpm or just over say 7200 as no engine damage will occur due the the bottom end being balanced ??

Cheers
Ben

Answer:
7200 sounds like a good limit to me, 7000 may be too close to max power to gain full advantage!

I know 5's that will happily run to 7500-8000rpm but they run out of puff much earlier so it doesn't do any good holding on longer.

Subject: cooling

Question:
i was wondering if its poss to connect up water pipes somehow to spray onto the intercooler manually rather than buying a chargecooler,is it possible? if yes, how?

Answer:
You could use 2 washer pumps in series to increase water pressure and route a pipe to the intercooler and then use a washer jet or two to spray onto the intercooler.

I have never tried this but it would work in theory!

Subject: how much?

Question:
dear wiz
ive just had my 5 on the rollers and was amazed to find i was getting 145bhp when i thought the car was standard! (apart from filter race plugs etc) it hasnt even got a performance exhaust!. the guy at the rollers said it was running 12-13psi, so i was wondering wether this can be acheived from actuator adjustment? (its hasnt got a bleed valve) or wether its a hybrid turbo?
cheers alex

Answer:
The extra boost could well have been due to the actuator being adjusted.
This is actually known as a phase 1 conversion by some of the older tuning companies.

Subject: gearboxes

Question:
what other gearboxes fit the 5? and what are the advantages and disadvantages of this.

Answer:
You can use the R5 diesel box or the clio 16V box but neither of these have ideal gear ratios for the GT.

Its up to you if you want longer ratios and more relaxed driving then try them!

Let me know how it goes if you do.

Subject: low temp fan

Question:
i have just purchaced a new low temp fan switch and put it into my new copper rad. i had an autoelectrition install the wireing and we set the car to idle. the temperature went up slowly and went well above running temprature , and didnt cut in. where on the standard temprature gauge should it cut in? and at how many degrees should it cut in?

Answer:
The temp switch should have the opening and closing temperatures stamped on it, which relates to approximately half way up the gauge.
Are you sure the system has been bled properly and if so check the relay for the fan, which is mounted next to the radiator.

Subject: Crankcase pressure

Question:
I have just built a Renault 5 turbo for circuit racing. The car has unlimited regulations so I have exploited as best i can. I have just shaken down the car and found the following problems.
Too much crankcase pressure - we have fitted to the car an aluminium baffled catch tank which takes pressure from both the rocker cover and the sump and runs around a baffle to atmosphere and a return tapped into the oil return pipe from the turbo to the sump.

In a 20 minute session the engine is putting about half a pint of oil into another catch tank where the first one vent to atmosphere

What is the ideal configuration? Has anyone else done anything radical? What creates the most pressure sump or rocker cover? Any advice would appreciated.

What plugs are people using? I have just used 9EV's which seem ok also standard Cosworth any tips

Answer:
I will start with the short and easy question, people use a variety of plugs due to engine specs being very different. 8EV,9EV,8EGV etc etc.

I have seen quite a few different configurations of breather system. Many use a small filter attached to the rocker cover with another on the oil seperator at the top of the crankcase return pipe, or a single filter off of the standard setup where the pipe normally goes into the turbo ""U"" bend.

A lot of fives suffer from this problem at higher boost levels and i think a decent catch tank is a better idea than just a breather system.

You could try brazing a bigger breather pipe to the sump as this would reduce any build up of pressure there and putting the pipe into a catch tank via a seperator.

Let me know how you get on.
Good Luck.

Subject: Exhaust noise

Question:
G`day Wiz, need your help. The 5`s due for it`s M.O.T. middle of April, and I`ve got a Redline Sidewinder noise maker. I`m a bit concerned that it won`t pass regarding the exit on the passenger side and of course the extra noise. Is the noise level tested do you know, or is it at the examiners discrestion? I don`t really want the hassle of putting the old pipe back on just to pass the M.O.T. and everyone I ask doesn`t seem to know if will fail, some say yes, some no.

Cheers Wiz, I await your reply with fingers crossed............

Answer:
As far as I know, as long as the noise level is below 108db, the car is road legal.
I know for a fact that the scorpion 2 1/2 inch side exit exhaust measures in at approx 100db. Is yours 3 times louder?????????????

As long as the pipe doesn't protrude past the side skirt then it is not illegal in that respect either.

Subject: Starter motor

Question:
Wiz - my starter motor stopped working the other day and after a clutch change it's hard to push start - so i borrowed the one of the car i'm doing up, no probs there

the question is - will any starter motor of a R5 fit - or does it have to be one of a GTT

as i can get one cheap of a 1.4 - which i though was the same block anyway??

cheers mate

Morrisey

Answer:
There are various starter motors that will fit the GTT, your best bet is to get a motor factor to compare the part numbers.

Subject: MOT!

Question:
I've recently fitted a carisma gt5 front bumper, and also have the car lowered on 15's by 40mm. Where do lowered cars go to get their MOT's done? All the places I've tried can't get it on the ramp! Even specialist shops like xtreme can't help me. What can I do or where can you reccomend?

Answer:
Try taking the bumper off when you put it on the ramp!

Question:
i recently have had a prob with my electric windows sticking half way up or becoming very slow and unreliable ....i have been told that it is possible to alter switches etc to make it work....................hhhhelp i hate this prob mr wizard your my last hope of fresh cool air

Answer:
Most of the problems relating to electric windows are due to the motor and mechanism being dirty and a good clean up and lubrication usually does the job.

Subject: gaskets

Question:
Can you recommend a good quality head gasket and exhaust manifold (uprated). Also is it necessary to replace the head bolts?

Answer:
I have always heard good things about the Mellor head gaskets which are commonly known as Group A.

The best exhaust manifold gasket is the original Renault item (Part number 7700855962, These cost about £11) as it has the metal backing.

The head bolts should be replaced with uprated items, I know of two options. First is a 10.9 strength normal hex headed bolt and the other is a 12.9 strength allen key headed bolt. Both available from most big motor factors or a specialist supplier.
Normal head bolts are 8.8 strength and stretch.

Subject: indicator

Question:
My passenger side front indicator sometimes decides to stop working and the rear and side one's on the passenger side start going really fast, then later it will start working again, is it just a loose conection, corrosion or what?

Answer:
It could well be a loose connection or corrosion, your best bet is to take the indicator out and have a good look!

Just release the spring mounting and unplug the wires from the back. Take out the bulb and check the glass isn't seperating from the metal bit.

Take care to ensure the guide lugs fit back into the base of the headlight when refitting as these break easily if out of line.

Subject: moving hub

Question:
Ihave new 15 inch alloys which have been balanced, the tracking has also been done. The problem is the steering wheel is still vibrating around 70mph. The wheel bearings must be worn as the hubs are moving inwards slightly. This is having the effect of pulling the steering wheel when going round corners as the wheels seem to have a life of their own. What needs replacing to stop the vibrations etc? Is it just the bearings and track rod ends or is it more terminal. Ihave been told my rack and pinion is in very nick for its age with relatively little wear. many thanks

Answer:
Sounds very much like wheel bearing to me. If it was the trackrod end then the people doing the tracking ""Should"" have picked that one up, then again a decent place would check the wheel bearings to as these can also affect tracking.

Subject: LOADS OF FUEL!

Question:
WIZZY,How come my 5 only gets around 55 miles out of ten quids worth of petrol? Ive had it tuned and it seems worse!! Its running 9psi and only has a piper filter and exhaust, is there any other things i can check other than the air/fuel mix screw which is set about right cos the car will only run correct at a certain setting. Cheers.

Answer:
To see exactly what your cars fuelling is up to you will have to take it to a rolling road and get it set up properly. You don't say whether you have a bigger jet in there but i would say anything bigger than a 130 main jet would be like pouring fuel out the exhaust pipe and straight down the drain!

Subject: Matching the manifold

Question:
Hi wizzy,

I am currently running at about 15psi, have a scorpian exhaust, piper cross airfilter, uprated jets and a dumpvalve, rolling roaded the other day I managed 115bhp at the wheels and 146ib torque, what difference will matching the manifold make, and would it be worth gas flowing the head, or is this the same thing?

Thanks in advance.

Dave :-)

Answer:
Gas flowing the head AND matching the manifolds are two seperate things that usually get done at the same time.

Both will give good gains if done correctly.

Subject: Floppy stick

Question:
Wizzy,

My gear stick seems to have lost its spring when pushing left, i.e towards 1st and 2nd, but is fine when pulling right i.e towards 5th? Is there a spring somwhere which is easy to replace?

Thanks in advance

Dave :-)

Answer:
Look underneath the car, there should be a spring attached to the gear linkage These are commonly broken or missing.

Subject: Running rich

Question:
Ive just bought a GT Turbo after 4 years without one! what i am finding that it seems to be running too rich, starting up from cold with choke on it nearly floods and when i am taking it easy through town it will do the same, eg: It will hesitate if in to low a gear, i have to dip the clutch & rev it then it will clear? it does clear if i putt my foot down? Could it be the spark plugs, Which would you recomend? Thanks SANDRA, P.S Where would you recommend to buy some new door pins?

Answer:
I would say it was more likely that the main jet has been changed for one that is too big.

Get the door pins from Renault, only a couple of quid!

Subject: charge cooler or intercooler

Question:
i hope u can help me i have been advised to get an intrcooler for me to turn the boost up past 15psi that is what the car is running now.but which is the best intercooler or chargecooler and what bhp gains can i get from either of these.ps i currently have 150bhp

Answer:
A pace style single intercooler will probably not give you any noticeable gains but will not blow apart like the standard unit is prone to! Cost about £150-£200

Chargecooler will only give advantages if standard intercooler is not cooling the air enough. Cost about £500- £600

Both will allow more boost to be used safely as they are more efficient than the standard unit.

Subject: Locking up

Question:
Hi there i have recently had this problem wherebye I was approaching a roundabout in the left hand lane. When I braked to stop I skidded on what I later found out to be a small patch of oil. Instead of skidding straight ahead my car veered off to the right. Luckily I didnt cause an accident but I was alarmed at what had happened and put my car into a garage to get it checked. A faulty wheelbearing was diagnosed and replaced. Could this have caused my car to veer to the right, i would value your expert opinion.
cheers keith.

Answer:
I should think that could be the cause of your problem.

Try finding that patch of oil again and see if it is still the same!

If not then try getting the brakes checked on an MOT rolling brake tester.
