Subject: un even tyre wear

Question:
my car is lowered by three inches, too much maybe, but it looks good, however the front tyres have worn horendousley quickley. I have seen the camber correction product on gt tunings website and am interested in knowing if you think this product is worth wile, how effective it is and everything you know about it really. also it needs an new clutch is there anything else that can only be done with the engine out that would be worth getting done at the same time.

thanks very much.

Answer:
Yes your cars ride height is your problem!!!

I have not seen GT Tuning's camber correctors personally but i know the bolt type from another company will reduce tyre wear but effect handling as the strut is still at an angle.

What is really needed is adjustable top mounts.

Subject: no fuel

Question:
well u c my car ran out of petrol and when we filled it up it started up for about 30 seconds then cut out we`ve had a look at the fuel pump to c if it was blocked but it wasn`t that but the question is theres no petrol being pumped into the carb, its bone dry. We tried putting petrol in the carb and it started fine untill the petrol was used up. Please advise me of what else it could be.

Answer:
You have to put about 10 litres or more of petrol into the car before it will be pumped into the main fuel tank from the auxiliary tank.
Your fuel filter is probably blocked, try replacing it with a new one as it will have dragged all the gunk from the bottom of the tank.

Subject: Holding Back

Question:
Hi,

When driving at a steady speed with the throttle opened just enough to keep balance the speed, I can feel my 5 'holding back' as if it's not getting sufficient fuel. Though when I accelerate, the problem seems to dissapear. I've had the emmissions checked at the garage and they are fine. I was thinking the fast idle may need adjusting or could there be a problem with the dizzy? I recently had some work done on the engine and a few miles down the road, the car began misfiring like buggery! I checked the dizzy & it had become loose. Could it have become damaged by the rotor arm?

many thanks,

Rob

Answer:
If there is no visable damage to the rotor arm and inside of the cap then it could be that it is another problem like plugs or leads.
Try replacing these with known good ones (from a friends 5?)

Was the distributor removed when this work was done to your engine?
Could be that it is not in the correct place.

Subject: gordini dump valve

Question:
I know it's not a GTT, but could you help me?????
I lumbered myself with helping a mate to tune his ""A"" reg gordini turbo. He's rang around for a dump valve and fitting kit but gets the same ans. everytime there isn't a kit listed.
Surely there must be a way of fitting and dump valve to this motor???(some places have said that we will have to make up an plate to fit a GTT carb to his manifold to make a dump valve work. is this right and how can we do it????)
THANKS V.MUCH 4 ANY HELP...
O GREAT AND WISE WIZARD

Answer:
I know that a member called Gav has done the GTT carb conversion which also includes a dump valve and intercooler conversion.

He said you have to shorten the height of the gordini manifold, weld a plate on the top, cut a hole over the centre of the manifold to ensure even fuel distribution, replumb the pipework and so on.

I do know this works as i have been in the car at 30 odd psi with no pinking and a nice whoosh from the dump valve!

Subject: Rotational Knocking Noise from deceleration.

Question:
When I anchor up after decelerating at roundabouts or junctions for example I can hear a knocking noise coming from the rear end of the car, is this the shock absorbers (as the car is lowered) from what i have read before Benny more has gone through a few. Also sorry to be a pest but can you get clio hubs/bearings to fit the 5 aswell as I have recently changed both front wheel bearings but the n/side has started to vibrate again and as i have 15inch clio wheels fitted i thought it would be advisable to uprate the bearings and hubs aswell-please can you blow some magic dust my-cheers once again Simon J.

Answer:
The 5 and the clio use the same hub and bearings. Were the bearings genuine parts? If not try them. More expensive but probably a better made product than most pattern parts.

Try using the shocks for a clio on the rear as they are shorter and better/longer lasting on lowered cars.

Subject: Oily Mess !!

Question:
Dear Wizard
After thrashing my poor car at York drag strip I opened my bonnet to find an Oily Mess !!!
The turbo wont boost any more than 20 psi even with the screw to the bleed valve removed !!!!! ( I used to get 30 easy )
It smokes at idle and oil has come out of the breather.
Is this because the seals have blown into the the oil line and is pressurising the sump through the oil return or am I compleatly wrong and its worse than a blown turbo ?

Answer:
Get a compression test to check for damaged pistons/rings as it sounds like an excess of crankcase pressure to me!

Subject: Anti-perc sensor

Question:
I have an 87 ph1 turbo, with low and behold, a non-working anti-perc. I Traced it to the sensor in the side of the carb. Now Ive been down to renault who could'nt find the part No. So for now, I've conected it to the fan, but I'll need to sort it a.s.a.p, your help would be much needed. Cheers

Answer:
The sensor on the carb is 'T'ed off from the one on the turbo heat shield, which is more common to go wrong as they get affected by the heat after so many years. Remove both sets of wires and if you short the two wires together and the fan comes on then it is one or both of the sensors. connect them one at a time to suss which one.

Subject: No windscreen washers

Question:
When I try to squirt water onto the windows using the pull selector stalk, no water comes out, however the wipers still work. I've heard that there could be a fuse for this, but I cant find it. and I've heard this could also be a Mot failure, Plese help mmmeeeeeeeee!!!

Answer:
Yes it is an MOT failure.

Have you put any water into the reservoir? only kidding!

It could well be a dodgy stalk as they are renown to go wrong.
Try a known good one (from a friends 5?) or get one from a scrappy. about £5

HI WIZ,NEED SOME ADVICE ON MY DUMP VALVE.MY DUMP VALVE IS FORGE STD TYPE,I HAVE A BLEED VALVE + CONE FILTER UT NO OTHER ENGINE MODS,CRUISING ALONG WITH TURBO NEEDLE AT ABOUT A THIRD I RELEASE ACCELERATOR AND QUIET 'WHOOSH',AT UPTO TWO THIRDS LOUD WHOOSH BUT AT FULL BOOST IT SOUNDS MORE LIKE A COUGH AND NOT A VERY LOUD WHOOSH,I HAVE INSPECTED THE DIAPHRAM AND THERE R NO TEARS OR CRACKS AS IT IS QUITE NEW,IVE HAD ABOUT 3 DUMP VALVES,ALL HAVE SPLIT DIAPHRAMS UNTIL THIS ONE,WHAT SHOULD I CHECK NEXT?WELL CONFUSED,CHEERS TONY.

Answer:
I would try looking at the diaphram with it stretched out as this has been known before to be a small hole that grows under full boost.

Subject: SILICONE HOSES

Question:
HI WIZ,GONNA UPGRADE MY TURBO HOSES TO SAMCO SILICONE ONES BUT IN THE ADVERT IVE SEEN THERE R TWO OPTIONS, 1,WITH DUMP VALVE OUTLET AND BOOST SWITCH AND 2,WITH DV OUTLET BUT NO B/SENSOR. MY QUESTION IS ...DO I NEED THE ONE WITH BOOST SWITCH?WHAT DOES IT DO.HOPE U CAN SOLVE MY DILEMMA!CHEERS TONY.

Answer:
The OVER boost switch cuts the ignition when you are overboosting from standard. If you run more than a few psi extra then you will have to either remove the switch or if you are lucky enough to have the adjutable type, adjust the max setting.

So really the choice is down to you whether you have the switch fitted or not!

I would ask a question, but everything is hunky dorey at the moment, so in the mean time, what air freshners do you recommend, or do you really not care?

Answer:
I really don't care!

Thanks for writing in though!

Subject: Kit car conversion

Question:
Hi,

Are there any renault gearboxes from rear wheel drive cars which will accept the GT Turbo engine? I ask this because I'm in the process of building a Lotus Sever Replica kit car & can't think of a better engine to use than the GT Turbo. I've already got a Sierra donor car & are thinking the GT Turbo engine & suitable renault gearbox could drive the Sierra diff through a modified prop shaft. I've spoken to some engineers & they suggested a plate to adapt the Renault engine to the Ford Gearbox!!!!!!!!!! I can't imagine this is at all possible. Any ideas?

Rob

Answer:
The adaptor plate is not only possible, but the most common way of fitting different engines and gearboxes.

I cannot think of a suitable gearbox off hand!

Subject: carb top

Question:
Wiz. I have a strange occurence goin on that is bafflin me. I bought an alloy carb top from BB tuning but when i put it on my boost goes from 15psi (plastic plenum) down to about 9psi. I have a bleed valve on my car but it is completely closed at 15psi and i haven't wound the actuator arm out. I know there is a restrictor in one of the ports on the plenum and thought on the placcy 1 it mite have been removed but it is still there. The alloy 1 seems to sit down nicely onto the carb and Andy at BB says he's road tested it on 1 of their cars and it didn't leak boost.
Any ideas? seems strange to run 15psi without touching actuator arm but it does still hav the yellow paint on it that looks unbroken ie. no-body has altered it and the 9-10psi shud be correct. so why do i get 15 with the plastic 1?
cheers wizzer

Question:
HiYa wizard, Can you tell me why my GTT is making a awfull throaty noise from the breather were it goes into the air filter hose, it seems to have started doing this since i have put a Piper x filter on and done away with the standard airbox? If i remove the tube and put my finger over the pipe the noise will go! Not a really loud noise but it does make the car sound awful on tickover Thanks Steve

Answer:
Try putting a small filter on the breather pipe to quiet it down!

Subject: Inlet / Exhaust manifold gasket

Question:
Wizard,

When fitting a new inlet / exhaust manifold gasket does the metal side of the gasket face the manifolds or the cylinder head??

Also what should I torque the nuts up to??

Regards

Chris Roberts

Answer:
Fit the flat metal side to the nice flat head face and the softer side to the uneven manifolds.

Renew the nuts with the correct metal locking nuts and torque up to 22lbs/ft as per the Haynes manual or more if you are carefull not to strip the head stud threads out.

Subject: Arch/Bumper Fouling on 17

Question:
Mr Turbo Wizard Man,

I want to know if it possible to create good rear wheel clearance with 17's using the standard R5GTT rear bumper? And I'm not just talking about driving over your average high street pot hole with 3 bags of Tesco shopping in the Boot and no passengers at 20mph! I want to go down the motorway at 80mph and be able to drive over a roller with passengers and not get any tyre fouling. Release the knowledge Wizard!

Answer:
If you are using the correct offset wheels and correct profile tyres then all you should have to do is either shave some of the rear bumper away where it meets the tyres or move the bumper back on its mounts a bit. (Makes it stick out to the rear more.)

Subject: Boosting

Question:
I've wound up the actuater on my turbo and now its at the point where it starts to pink, why is this and can anything be done about it, thanks Jase.(P.S. I know its not good for a standard turbo but it's good fun).

Answer:
It is pinking because there is not enough fuel and the mixture is lean.

THIS IS VERY BAD!!!!!!!

Get the boost turned back down untill you have a bigger main jet fitted.

Subject: tired seals

Question:
Hiya Mr. Wizard,
can you tell me if it is possible to purchase the rubber seals that go around the hinges and lock mechanism thing on the rear windows(mainly external)?? Mine are falling to bits - do i have to buy a load of unnecessary bits in a pack a la Renault - i.e. rubbers attached to glass in turn attached to rear quarter panel attached to new chassis!!

thanks in advance.........Adam

Answer:
Just order the seals seperately!

Question:
I recently done a quarter mile run at Santa Pod in my R5. I was making great starts and leaveing everything for dust of the line but when i turned up the boast, on the in-car adjustable, the car seemed to lose power especially in 4th gear.
The car was running max 16PSI on a full group A engine, but a standard turbo. The fuel pump is uprated but somethings not quite right!

Any ideas?
I managed a 15.8second run at 87mph.

Answer:
What jets have you got fitted?

Try getting the car rolling roaded to check the fuelling.

Subject: it

Question:
Wiz - would a big brake conversion - i.e. one that simply changes the size of the discs but retains the original calipers (with adjustment)be of any great advantage when the time comes to 'slam on the anchors' - ok so i can understand that heat dissipation would be better due to a greater surface area to aid cooling but would it really make much difference compared to a set of quality standard size discs and good pads??
thanx...
ad.

Answer:
It makes all the difference as it increases the braking leverage and therefore stopping power with the bigger diameter brakes.

Question:
Wizz,

I am upgrading to 310mm disks but don't know what the torgue setting is for the 2 Torx screws that hold the disk to the hub? It does not specify this setting in the Haynes manual.

Answer:
Tighten by hand with a little copperslip on the threads to make them easy to remove next time.
They don't need to be very tight as they are only to keep the disk in place when the wheel is removed.

Subject: Cylinder head gone porous!

Question:
Hi Wiz, I was wondering if you could help me. I removed my cylinder head thinking the gasket had blown. But on inspection there was nothing wrong with the gasket. So i had the head pressure tested and the guy said it had gone porous and there was nothing i could do with it.
Is this true and if i need a new head, where would be the best place to get one from. I thought about a scrap yard then having it pressure tested and skimmed, buying a new/reconditioned considering i cannot exchange my old head or any other ideas you have ?

Cheers Wav

Answer:
It all depends on how much you want to spend!

Obviously the new option would be best but most expensive.
I have know heads to be rechambered to reduce the compression ratio even after they have been skimmed a few times, so second hand would be acceptable but you have the chance of it too being porous.

At the end of the day, you pay your money you take your chances!

Subject: Kit Car Conversion

Question:
Can you suggest where I could have an adaptor plate made so the Renault engine will accept a 1990 Sierra 2.0L Gearbox. What else do I need to take into account? Obviously special engine mounts will have to be made though can I still keep Renault cluch & what about the strobe sensor which reads off the flywheel?

cheers,

Rob

Answer:
Keep the flywheel and I would suggest an uprated clutch.

Any competant machine shop will make up the plate but it will cost a lot less if you make a template or technical drawing of what is required.

Subject: EXHAUST WHISTLE

Question:
I HAVE A 4 INCH SCORPION EXHAUST FITTED TO MY TURBO AND HAVE RECENTLY NOTICED AN EXCESS WHISTLING NOISE COMING FROM IT WHEN ACCELERATING

Answer:
I expect the noise is just the turbo spinning up.
If you still have it connected then the boost compensation circuit will adjust boost in relation to the exhaust backpressure.

Subject: carb top

Question:
back to my earlier question Wiz, the hoses have definately not split as when the placcy 1 goes back on i'm straight back upto 15psi.

Answer:
I take it you are using the same rubber ""O""ring seal with both carb tops.
Pressure is caused by resistance so it is possible that your car now has less restriction to flow and therefore less pressure.
Is there any loss of performance with the alloy carb top?
You could always try plumbing in a boost gauge to another point either under or over the carb and compare the readings!

Subject: Tapping noise

Question:
Hi, thanks for your last advice on my wheel bearings, in the end I had to get both of the front ones done. I have recently started to hear a tapping noise coming from the bottom area of the engine on the drivers side. The tapping is slower than the usual tapping of the engine I also recently noticed a rumbling noise when pulling away in first which is more noticable with 2 or more people in the car. Could they be connected?

Answer:
Sounds like it could be a drive shaft on its way out.
This could have added stress to the wheel bearing causing it to wear faster.
