Subject: Smoking Question: Hello again Mr Wiz It's me again my problem this time is that for the past 2-4 weeks I have not been able to give my car any abuse due to the wobbly wheel feeling problem that I had which turned out to be the drivers side d/shaft I have since sorted the problem and am now able to give my car abuse again. But wot I noticed the other nite as I looked in my rear view mirror when I floored her in 2nd gear there was quite a bit of blackish/greyish smoke is this normal when booting a 5 turbo or is it a sign of over fueling or some other under lying problem boost-12psi on a bleed valve/std carb & i/c engine totally rebuilt 10k ago run in for 3k miles at a max of 3k rpm oil & filter change every 3k miles Thanx Mr Wiz Answer: i get this prob when the misses drives it and its my turn. does it happen all the time or when you only first boot it for the first few times. if smoke goes away then its just a bit of choking up but if it happens all the time you are most probbibly over fueling |

Subject: Tapping Question: Hi again, Another quick quessy, after seting me tappets my 5GTT is still very tappy and seems to get even more tappy as the days go on, i havent checked the tappets again yet but i am goin to this weekend if they r ok what could be the cause of this thanks, ive also changed my manifold gasket as a friend told me that can make it sound louder. Cheers Answer: i will try to exp how to do tappets. engine MUST be very cold (leave overnight dont run in morning). use rule of nine (thats not 7 of 9 she's horny ). valves run 1ex 2in 3in 4ex 5ex 6in 7in 8ex no1 flywheel end turn engine until 8ex is fully down adj 1ex. turn eng next valve fully down should be an inlet think its 7in adj 2in see how it goes add the two and you get 9 easy... gaps are ... inlet 0.20mm exhaust 0.25mm make them a firm draw on the feller gauge but most important is that you get the drw on the feller gauge to be the same on all of them |

Subject: Lowering the boost Question: Is it true that fitting a bleed valve in the rear actuator pipe would enable me to lower the minimum amount of boost, i have an in car adjustable boost at the moment but the lowest i can get it to go is about 12 psi. If this is true do i need to open or close the vavle once i have put it in the pipe? Answer: do the cup mod take off all the pipes on the rear of the actuator and blank off any holes/pipes etc exept the one on the actuator leave this open. fit the adjuster in the pipe on the front of the acuator this should give you a low boost setting of about 5to6 psi and wot ever you like when you turn up the boost control |

Subject: main fan not workin Question: i have had my 5 for about a month now i have rebuilt the engine to standard form at the mo i have had a few probs with the rad fan it only seems to work if it is bridged i have replaced the sensor but still no luck should i fit a switch? Answer: When you say bridged, i take it you mean that you have taken the wires off the rad switch and joined them together. If this is correct then it means that the fan, wiring and relay are all working properly. If you fitted a new switch and it still doesn't work then it points to either an air pocket around the switch in the rad or the rad is blocked around the switch. Try bleeding the cooling system from cold by opening the two bleed screws and blowing into the header tank hard till just coolant comes out of the screws. Get another person to close the screws whilst still pressurising the system to ensure all the air has gone. If this doesn't cure the problem then try back flushing the radiator. |

Subject: misfireing v bad! Question: hi wiz, i ran out of petrol just yards from the bp station and i had a small amount of petrol still left in my jerry can in the boot. But this has been there at least a year, so i was stuck and had no other option but to use it. Since then there car has been un-driveable due to it stalling and very very badly misfireing! im not sure if this was down to the old petrol or all the gunk out of the bottom of the tank. please help because ive only had the car two bloody days and its a minter, and now its sat on the bloody drive. Any suggestions will be much abliged because my last 5 was off the road for ages and now i just want to sort out this prob and get rollin' again. I hope this is only a small prob (unlike the question) Answer: If the fuel was stale then it could be a problem. I take it you have filled the car up with new fuel since. I would suggest removing and cleaning the idle jet which is located behind a large brass screw on the right hand side of the carb as you look at it from the drivers seat. Also look to see if the mixture screw is still in the carb. Same side as the idle screw near the back of the carb in a little tube sort of affair. |

Subject: Charging???? Question: Well just fitted bottom end 2 my turbo got it all up an running and when it came 2 connecting the battery the starter motor started, then swopped the wires over and all seemed fine. BUT started car up and the battery lite stayed on! the alternator is new only done bout 300 miles, connections seem ok, cud i of shorted ne thing out? and how many wires shud there b on the startermotor? ive got 2 plus a little white 1, is this right? cud the starter corz this fault? Cheers wiz. hope 2 hear from u soon? Answer: You need to make sure that the alternator wire is connected to the starter motor. It sounds like it is if you have two large wires connected but make sure. It could also be the exciter circuit of the alternator, located at the top, it has a block with two wires. (orange and brown i think) make sure this is a good connection and not corroded or loose. |

Subject: how much boost Question: i would like to know how much boost i can run safely please,on my car ive got twin dump valves, polished and ported head, group a carb which has been bored out, straped and flowed inter cooler, and std turbo, thanz wizard Answer: I would say that as long as there is enough fuel then 16psi would be fine and the turbo may last ok if you use 18psi for short bursts only. You may find problems with the intercooler at 18psi but they have been known to hold together with higher boost levels. |

Subject: rear brake compensator Question: Hi Wiz, My 5 failed the MoT on the rear brake compensator being seized, ive looked in the haynes and cant seem to see anything about it, where is it located exactly and is it maybe called something else in the haynes? cheers ![]() Answer: It is located in the centre of the rear axle beam on the body. You will see the pipes going in and out of it and the spring type rod for load sensing. I think the Haynes manual may refer to it as a load sensing valve. Try moving it by hand to try and unseize it before replacing it. |

Subject: 3rd gear 3000rpm power loss Question: I have a 89G phase II r5 turbo, it has a t25 hybrid turbo, ported polished head, gt tuning carb, cossie actuator, in 1st and 2nd it is fine, it boosts up well and pulls right through the revs, however in 3rd, 4th and 5th the power stops at 3000rpm, if i keep pushing it, it either floods or pops a flame out the back??? i have changed the fuel pump, the fuel filter and some suspect looking vacuum hoses! but the problem remains? The problem is hard to pin point because the car idles fine! also What length and bore of hoses would i need to replace the whole vacuum system? could this problem be a vacuum leak? Answer: If your fuel pump is not uprated then it could be this or a faulty fuel regulator. A vaccuum leak in the regulator pipe will also cause you problems. You will need 4 and 6mm vaccuum hoses and a couple of meters should do it for the lot. |

Subject: Looking for shocks.. Question: Hello.. Just bought R21 Turbo (Phase1) from Germany, and got one big problem.. Can´t find new shockabsorbers anywhere.. How the turbos different from ex. 21GTX ? Second one.. Whats the standard boost pressure.. And can I go over 1bar safely? I noticed that the intercooler looks same like mine 5GTT. That I can fix easily.. Third.. How much I can use standard parts from ex. 21GTX ?? Thanx in advance.. Answer: the shocks of a 21 gtx will fit but i think they are gonna be to soft and spoil the cars feel (like having a porky on a fat bird) its difficult to turn the boost up on a 21tub as the boost is controled by the inj computor if it senses to much boost, comp turns boost down via the demale valve (spelling i kmow im bad)the best way to do it is get the inj comp reprogramed |
