Subject: Starting Problems

Question:
Hi Wiz,

Well...had my fuel lines replaced on Saturday believing that the fuel leaks were causing my starting problems. But...the scenario is: Car starts with a bit of choke (sometimes) then I can drive for 1/2 mile, turn ignition off then car won't start. But, if I try a ""bump"" start the engine starts at the turn of a key. I'm baffled. Any ideas?
Brian

Answer:
do you mean a bump start ie pushing it or do you mean jump start from another car or battery. sorry need to know as it could make a differance

Subject: has it gone again?

Question:
hi whizz need some help pls, just as i think shes sorted another problem comes along, my turbo has a little play in it, a little oil in the hoses going to it, but it spins fine, when i start it theres alot of smoke at idle and under load, and is really lumpy. my oil sensor has also been playing up,ie starting at 6-4 then droping after a few miles down to o then the warning light comes on, but shes been fine to drive, boost well and is smooth at idle and under load, could it be the oil seals on the turbo?or something to do with the ignition and timing as ive a really bad tappet thing still happening, it was booked to be sorted today but all this happened last nite at the club meet/way home, thanks in advance glenn

Answer:
It could be that the low oil pressure is due to thinning oil or just a dodgy sensor.
If it is low oil pressure then the noise could be more than a tappet and the turbo sounds knackered but it could also be valve stem seals.

Subject: Cylinder Head Gasket.

Question:
I own a R5 GTurbo and have recently put a new standard turbo on it. i took the car to a performance garage where it was tuned,(only a standard tune for the turbo) but two days later i have noticed the oil gauge moving up and down all the time and the power starting to go on and off. When i had a look at the dip stick the oil was a bit bubbley and under the oil cap there is a trace of white residue.

Answer:
Sounds like it could be the gasket.
Get a compression test to make sure.

Subject: No Response

Question:
ive recently installed a new turbo, cylinder head, and head gasket and put a new battery in.
After having the car start eventually (felt like it was vibrating trying to start, splutting oil out exhaust), we had it running but quite rough as it was misfiring. We turned the engine off, but it wouldnt restart, sounded like it was killing itself trying to start.
Eventually after jumping it, it finally did.
Now, it wont start at all, turning the key in the ignition only turns all dials on, but the engine refuses to start, there is no noise or movement from the engine, its absolutley dead like there is an immobiliser on it. Please help?

Answer:
It may be that the relay near the ignition module in the scuttle has gone as this controls fuel pump and ignition module.

Subject: Starting probs

Question:
Hi Wiz...maybe I should add...I've changed to new plugs, changed leads, rotor arm and cap are fine (apart from a retaining screw is missing but cap still secure)
Cheers, Brian

Answer:
If the cap is lifting slightly then it may be making it harder for the spark to jump the gap between the rotor arm and dizzy cap contacts. Try fitting a new screw and let me know how you get on.

Subject: Choice of Clutch?

Question:
Hi, I'm looking to buy a new clutch for my R5 (phaseII). Can I buy a paddle clutch? - What does this actually do? Who produces them for an R5? And what sort of price should I expect to pay?

Answer:
Unless you have 250+bhp then just go for the ""Uprated"" volvo 440/480 turbo clutch. Expect to pay around £60-80.

Subject: Smoking Exhaust

Question:
when i rev my r5 turbo from idle alot of white smoke pours out the exhaust. Could this be water evaporating to create steam and if so could it be linked to what i believe is a knackered head gasket or is this perhaps a turbo water seal?

Answer:
Get a compression test to check headgasket.
Unlikely water is from turbo, could be from carb/manifold heating though.

Subject: Oil Cooler Feed

Question:
Hi, just fitting an oil cooler to the little rocket and would like to know which is the best way to have the incoming oil feeds. Should the oil feed into the top of the oil cooler or should it feed from the bottom?

Also would there be any problems in having the cooler infront of the rad(assuming it fits!!)

Cheers

Phill

Answer:
Pipe entry is best from top as it keeps oil in the cooler rather than letting it drain out.
Airflow to rad will not be noticably effected.

Subject: Starting

Question:
Hi Wiz,
I meant a bump start. ie. A (very) short run after a push then a quick ""bump"" while in 1st/2nd/reverse gear then the ignition fires up with a turn of the key.

Answer:
sounds like starter motor jamming but first replace the terminal on the white wire that goes to the starter normal blue type connector will do just make sure its crimped on properly

Subject: bleeding the braking system

Question:
wiz, i recently discovered that the main seal had gone on my master cylinder, letting fluid into the servo. I changed the servo and the master cylinder, but now i can't pressurise the braking system. I have brought a brand new master cylinder and still it is the same. I get pressure in the drivers side front and passenger side rear but the other 2 just dribble. i have tried to bleed them in every way possible with/without bleed bottles and just pumping the fluid through with the nipples undone (not removed)but the pedal still goes to the floor. What the hell am i doing wrong? please help before i torch the car whilst in it. thanks.

Answer:
try this: if you can get a pressure bleeder that goes onto res this normaly works

Subject: Starting

Question:
I'm having problems starting my 5. I've just replaced the head gasket and once back together it started fine however about an hour later I went to start it and it would turn over but not fire. I took the fuel line off the carb and fuel wouldn't pump though. Went back the next day to check fuel pump, when connected to the battery the fuel pump works but now the starter motor won't turn. Also the fuel pump doesn't seem to work. Does the fuel pump bring the fuel lines up to pressure before the engines turning? Any ideas whats wrong?

Cheers

Answer:
It could be down to the fuel pump relay or the ignition module relay which also controls the working of the fuel pump.

Subject: Leak From Petrol Tank

Question:
I have a leak from my petrol tank and ivebeen told that its not just my car with the promlem but quite a few have it aswell. ive been told that its most likely to be coming from a yellow plug near the top of the tank on the drivers side.

because petrol just errodes most filling substances i dont know what to do at the mo coz i cant afford a new tank and for it to be fitted.

If anyone knows of some kind of substance that will stop it for a while so i can save up please let me know.

thanx

Answer:
If you are really desperate just keep the fuel level below 1/2 and it shouldn't leak any more.

Subject: dump valves

Question:
when fitting two d/v are they both fitted in the main boost hose to carb or one to the turbo should they both be grp a d/v cheers wiz

Answer:
You can fit them where you like. Some people say it is best to have one dv for each side of the intercooler but i am not convinced.
Any 2 will do but 2 the same look better.

Subject: Incar adjustable fueling

Question:
Is there anyway of being able to adjust the fueling whilst on the move? Would I need injectors controlled by the ecu as opposed to jets? Do you know of anyone who has done this.
Also this might have been asked before, but is it possible to fit a superchip to the R5 ecu or not? And is it possible to fit one of the jap style boost computers in place of a incar bleed valve?
Cheers.

Answer:
There is no way of adjusting the fuelling with the carb so you would have to go to injection. There is no chip to superchip!
You could fit an electronic boost controller if you want but they are expensive!

Subject: Squeeky breaks

Question:
I have recently put big breaks/new pads on the car. When I break they squeak badly, what causes this & how can I cure it?

Many thanks

Lomo

Answer:
try this: remove the pads and clean the bracking surface(friction matterial) of the pads rub them on a sheet of course emery on a FLAT surface then wash the disks and callipers just use soapy water and a brush then rinse and dry properly. dust or a contaminant on the pads and disks is normally the cause. if this does not work then a change of pads to another make is about the only thing that will cure. try to find out if its front or rear to minimise cost

Subject: smoking like a 2-stroke!

Question:
I'm getting excessive smoke from the exhaust. The head has recently been skimmed and the head gasget changed. Are my pistons on their way out?

Answer:
is it overheating this will tell you if headgask gone . it could be the turbo way to check is remove the turbo and look at the inside of the manifold and down pipe if mani is a light colour and the down pipe is black its the turbo if both are black then its engine. when i say black it looks a little oily and not dry looking (dusty soot)

Question:
hi wiz... wondering if you could help? I've got a phase 2 which when it starts to get hot- i.e at the end of a long journey, it judders when pulling off(also when puttin gas down after a gear change). I thought it may be dirt in the carb.So i Blew that out and replaced gaskets, but makes no difference. It seems to happen around town, but on the motorway it's fine.(It feels like a lack of fuel gettin through) Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Answer:
poss cause is the flywheel pickup. or it could be perculating is perk fan working and have you got lower temp rad fan switch as soon as i find out how to do it i will be putting a mod to the perk and rad fans onto my (THE MASTER) picky folder thingy

Subject: actuator

Question:
could you tell me what the pipe's on the actuator are for, what they do and why, cheers, karl.

Answer:
ile try to answer that the best i can. the hose at the front opens the waste gate to reduce boost. and the hose at rear holds it shut. strange sys and only ren as far as i know do it this way i think the hose at the rear is to obtain a much smother waste gate control without chatter as the sys is regulated bye a jet in the carb elbow and a pre ditermined leak off. can i ask wot are your intentions of controling the boost ie varible in car boost adjuster ????

Question:
Right then majour dialena whiz,
about a month ago i blew my turbo big time an lost all water, wen i drove it home about a half mile away with it dead, an temp needle bout 2 rap around the needle stoper twice over. cold air was cumin out the fans 2! jus this wknd i bort a stage 1 turbo (second hand) an a new recon head new spark plugs an leads also a copper core rad. Then wen it came 2 startin the lil buga up masses or steam poors out the exhaust an water bubbles around the exhaust manifold.
Also wen i took the old head gasket off the old cylinder head there was no vissable signs of a break in the gasket. Could this b a cracked cylinder liner?

i appoligse 4 the biography.
B Gell

Answer:
its poss that you got it so hot that the linners have dropped. but first take off your ehx from the point that it joins the down pipe and run the engine. see if you still got the same problem. ehx could be full of water from when it went bang before

Subject: Judering

Question:
Hi, after taking the pipe from my brake servo/master cylinder off the one that goes into the manifold, i get a prob with pullin off. The car kinda juders if thats the way off puttin it, but after intial pull off its ok its as if the breaks r kinda on then there not. I replaced the little plastic one way valve because it broke when i took the pipe off i also replaced the rubber bung loacted on the servo/mast cylinder. Anyway hope that gives u some idea off what prob i got, oh yeah i think the bung may be slightly split could this be the prob.
Thanks anyways cheers, while im here i also have a prob with breakin this isnt a recent prob its been present for a while, my pads and discs r brand new as well, its as if theres some resistance some where when breakin sometimes i dont reckon im gonna stop could this be that the break system needs bleadin.

Thanks again

Answer:
any air leeks on this pipe will give you this prob sray some carb cleaner long the pipe and at joints with engine running. if note or speed of engine change then you got an air leek
