Subject: don,t boost all the way

Question:
when i bougth my car it was well set up and boosting good.the turbo went and i replaced it with a ktr 230 hybrid .my problem is it don,t boost all the way, boost goes up slow and the gauge on the dash only goes up 3 quatres as before the needle went right round.o and when fittin a boost gauge do u fit it to the carb pipe where the boost gauge on the dash board,as i have a split fire boost gauge.please help me, gettin done by rs turbo,s

Answer:
It could be that the actuator on the new turbo is set a lot lower than your old one.
The slower boostup could be a problem or just a bigger turbo with more lag.
Try talking to K-Tec about it.

You can fit the new gauge to the same pipe as the std gauge for above the carb boost or you can fit it to the ignition module to carb pipe for at the engine boost and this will give a negative reading when not on boost.

Subject: Smokey exhaust

Question:
HI,
About 1 month ago I changed my spark plugs as they weren’t all firing. This solved the ""put-put"" problem I had. Then last weekend I started it up and the problem is back. I took out the new spark plugs and they are all covered in carbon again. Also now when I rev it black smoke comes out the exhaust and leave a black stain on the road. What’s the problem and how do I fix it?
Thanks m8

Answer:
You are over fuelling.
Get the car rolling roaded to sort out the fuelling.

Subject: Turbo timer

Question:
Hi,

how does a turbo timer work?

would my alarm/immoboliser interfeare with it.

I am getting fed up of sitting in it, to cool down when I am late for work.

Thanks

Answer:
Some alarms do not work with turbo timers due to the power drain.
They just bypass the ignition until the timer runs down.

Subject: Cutting out?

Question:
My engine keeps cutting out!!
It starts up ok, but after about 5-10 mins of driving the engine revs fall + it stops. It happens wether im driving or sat idling. Any ideas boss?
Craig (2536)

Answer:
Could be a dodgy fuel pump relay.
Try replacing it with a known good one or bypass the relay by running a positive straight from the battery via a fuse to the pump.

Subject: bad bad noise

Question:
Right then I was going along on a dual carriage way and all of a sudden i heard a loud very weird noise. Hard to explain but imagine u had a tube full of water and u were blowing over the top, then u let out the water gradually so the note went down.....well it did that, then i heard a bang and it was like something was scraping along the ground really loudly but nothing is. Happens at idle aswell and gets worse with revs, really loud. But engine seemed to drive normal.

I know it sounds weird but have you got any ideas?

Driveshaft? Gearbox? or is my engine just screwed

Answer:
Wow that is weird!

Very hard to diagnose.
I think you will have to go to your nearest tuner or decent garage to get it checked out.

Sorry i can't be more help.

Question:
hi, can u tell me where the oil pressure switch is on the engine, and where i can find where which wire goes where on the alternator, because the muppet who took my engine out did not label any of the wires. thanks.

Answer:
The oil pressure sensor is on the bottom of the turbo oil feed pipe by the block/sump.
The wiring for the alternator is in the blue haynes manual. Try asking someone to scan it and upload it for you.

Subject: Handbrake - low effort

Question:
Hi Wiz

1st time here, hope ya can help.

My car recently failed mot. The cause was cited as ""low effort on parking brake performance & service brake performance"". I've been told it may be the calipers, are there any test I can do to be sure of the cause & will changing the rear brakes + discs cure it??

Help plz...many thanks in advance.

Answer:
The rear callipers are prone to seizing as they don't do an awefull lot of work.
Try working the brakes whilst someone else looks for movement in the calliper. Recon callipers are not too expensive from GSF.

Subject: carb sensor

Question:
Hi mr wiz
i wanted to know what the sensor on the base of the carb does it seems to operate the air valve on the bulk head also what colors are the wires going to it?
cheers
JP

Answer:
The sensor on the carb is the same as the one on the turbo, it works the anti perc fan. Wires are orange and brown i believe.

Subject: Oil meter

Question:
Hi Wiz,
My oil meter ready keeps flappin' round like a madman at the moment - should it do that or do i need to replace the lot - the car was sitting idle for quite a while before i got it - has it lost its viscosity?
Cheers

Change the oil and filter and see if that helps. If not then check the wiring to the sender and gauge.

Subject: Heat meter

Question:
Ahh we meet again...

Can you tell me what the ideal running temp is on a standard dash gauge? - I was driving recently and my perc fan started smoking... does the perc fan do anything, is it really needed and is that affecting my engine temp?
Ta

Answer:
Most cars sit around the middle of the gauge when up to temperature.
The perc fan is to assisst in hot starting and should be removed or replaced if smoking as it will catch fire eventually.
It does not effect the normal engine running temp.

Subject: Dump Valve

Question:
Recently installed silicon boost hoses with alloy D/V (? GT Tuning). The D/V starts to ""bleed"" air when I accelerate then I get the customaryl ""whish"" sound of air when I take my foot off the pedal. Is this a normal function? Previous D/V didn't bleed off at all until I took my foot off the throttle.
Thanx Wiz

Answer:
Sounds like a bit of a weak spring in the DV.
Try stripping it and replacing the spring.

Subject: Loads and loads

Question:
Hi wiz, please help me.
I have done a comprestion test on my standard 5 and she is all good but i think i have a leak from the manifold gasket, is there any way of testing this? I have also got to change the front calipers and want to know the best way of doing this without have to bleed the whole system down as my rear caliper nipples have snapped and i cant afford new ones just yet. Can you also advise as to the best way to smooth off my rear bumper as i am not sure what to use for the job, filler or ???????? as i am going to get some body mods done while the car is STILL off the road ( i have made a bad boy bonnet and it look the bezz bollox). Thanks for your time and i'm sure i'll have some more questions for you soon.

Answer:
To test for a manifold gasket leak, hold a rag over the exhaust pipe to block the gasses and then any leaks will show up. Obviously you need two people for this job.
Just change the front callipers and bleed them, the rest of the system should be fine.
Use an elastic type filler for the bumper and allow it time to sink before final smoothing and painting.

Subject: PHASE 1/PHASE 2 ??

Question:
WHATS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PHASE 1 AND A PHASE 2 R5 GT TURBO

Answer:
There are quite a few differences ie.
1)Phase 1 has no lower spoiler lip on the front bumper but has vents in the rear arches that the phase 2 hasn't.

2)Phase 1 has vinyl door cards phase 2 has cloth.

3)Phase 1 has ignition module over turbo, phase 2 is next to battery.

4)Phase 1 has air cooled turbo, phase 2 has water cooled turbo.

5)Phase 1 has different cooling system (due to turbo)

6)Phase 1 has different wheels to phase 2.

There are lots of little differences and some of the early phase 2 cars still had some of the phase 1 parts so it can get confusing.

Subject: NOT BOOSTING UP

Question:
hi wiz,

hi have just fitted a group a forge dump valve. the cars running ok but when it boosts it only boost to the U on TURBO on the gauge. i also have a side exit exhaust and cone air filter any suggestions why its only boosting so far?? it used to boost a bit further?

cheers wiz

Answer:
Could be that the extra pipe to the DV is leaking or expanding with boost or the valve may be leaking slightly.
Try checking for leaks and if none are found then just adjust the actuator to sort the boost out.

Subject: twin carbs ?

Question:
would it be possible to fit a twin carb set up i.e weber twin 40's.what sort of power increase could be achieved , i have never heard of someone doing this conversion

Answer:
There are a few people out there who have fitted the twin choke carb from a Lancia Delta HF Turbo and a couple of people who have fitted twin standard type solex carbs. It is more down to better fuel distribution and correct high boost fuelling than actual power gains.
I suppose you could fit twin 40's if they can be pressure fed but i doubt it would be worth it.
Your money is probably better spent on a fuel injection system!

Subject: nos

Question:
hi i have r5gtt running about 180 bhp, the mileage is high at 107.000 miles, but really looked after. is it ok to use nos and how much would it increase the bhp

Answer:
You can use NOS on any car but if the base engine is weak it will blow.
You are best off going for a 25bhp boost but you can add as much NOS/power as you like. I have heard of a 5 with 100bhp jets in it but it has blown up a few times.

It could be that you have no restrictor in your in car boost system so have a look for one and if it is not there then fit one before the carb top.

Subject: How much BHP...?

Question:
Wiz,

I'm currently building a new engine from scratch, any idea what sort of BHP this little lot will push (having been run in and set-up correctly)!? I have a GT Tuning in-car boost kit with spider valve set at 10psi min, and 18psi max.

- Standard airbox with K&N filter
- Hybrid turbo (T25) good for 29psi
- Pace alloy intercooler
- Group 'A' carb
- Gas flowed inlet manifold
- Gas flowed cylinder head
- Brand new piston kit (std compression)
- Lightened & balanced crank, conrods, flywheel/clutch cover
- Piper 285 cam, with vernier pulley
- Hi-flow turbo pipe
- Full Scorpion exhaust

Answer:
I would guess between 160 and 180 bhp.
