Subject: Valve stem oil seals

Question:
I've just taken the rocker cover off to adjust the valve clearances and noticed that one of the valve stem oil seals has been dislodged, the car has been spluttering really badly on boost lately could this be the problem?

Answer:
Not very likely unless oil is getting onto the spark plug in that cylinder.
Remove the plug and see.

Subject: intercooler

Question:
hi wiz
just a general question on which would be a better purchase a front mount intercooler or a charge cooler kit advise is usefull cheers
sean

Answer:
Depends on how you use the car really.
A front mount will be better on the open road with good airflow but the charge cooler will be better if you stop start a lot.

Subject: OIL PRESSURE GAUGE

Question:
HELLO WIZARD, I KNOW THE STANDARD OIL LEVEL PRESSURE GAUGE IN THE FIVE CAN BE A BIT PRONE TO MALFUNCTION HOWEVER I AM WORRIED AS IT CHECKS THE LEVEL FINE WHEN YOU FIRST TURN ON IGNITION, BUT THEN WHEN U START THE CAR THE PRESSURE SEEMS FINE NEAR THE TOP, THEN ITS FINE FOR A WHILE BUT THEN AFTER ABOUT 5 MINUTES, WHEN I AM ON BOOST IT DROPPS RIGHT DOWN TO ZERO AS SOON AS I EASE OFF IT COMES BACK UP, DO YOU THINK ITS A FAULT WITH THE SENSOR, OR THE DIAL ITSELF IS IT A COMMON PROBLEM? ANY HELP MUCH APPRECIATED

Answer:
The oil level and pressure gauge may be in the same unit but the senders are two seperate items.
The sender may be dodgy but it could also be your oil thinning out.
I believe the sensors are only a few pounds from GSF so try that first.

Subject: knocking

Question:
hi wiz need some help mate, just rebuilt my 5 with a new head after the gasket went when taking it for a test run the bottem end is knocking at low revs, pistons were all good do you think a valve could be hitting, seems to be coming from the turbo end of the engine could it be the small end any ideas would be much appreciated cheers

Answer:
If it was a valve you would be down on power from that cylinder.
It could be small end but also it could be any of the other bearings.
Is it defo in the engine and not a manifold gasket or turbo leaking?

Subject: reply to knocking

Question:
hi wiz, it does not seem to be down on power just sounds like a bag of ****,can the turbo knock it is def coming from that end dont think it is the manafold gasket also i think the petrol pump has gone its very noisey and it wont idle. have to really keep it reving else it just stalls cheers for your help wiz

Answer:
Now this stalling sounds like a loose or missing carb mixture screw but it is unlikely related to the knocking.
The cam/followers and bottom end bearings will all make noise and still produce power.
Sounds like you may have to strip it down to check it all.

Subject: removing torsion

Question:
hi wiz,
can u please tell me how to take out the torsion bars?
thanks

Answer:
I guess this means you don't have a Haynes manual.

You need to soak the ends of the bars with a releasing oil for a couple of days before attempting removal.
Remove the shock bottom mount from the trailing arm.
Using a slide hammer or suitable tube type puller, remove the bar enough to free off the inner mount.
Adjust the trailing arm height to suit and refit.

Subject: standard carb with a hybrid

Question:
I'm running a standard carb with 135 main jet and uprated air correcter
with a t25 hybrid, seems ok but do you think the fueling is ok for the turbo .

Answer:
The turbo has nothing to do with it.
It is the boost you have to worry about.
I expect your jetting would be ok to anything up to about 20psi but a rolling road setup is the only sure fire way to make sure.

Subject: intercooler

Question:
hi wiz
would ktecs front mount intercooler fit behind the a&j tuning front bumper(subaru style)

Answer:
Wouldn't put money on it as the intercooler was designed to fit in the K-Tec Combat kit.
Try asking Andy at A&J about fitting a cooler like GaryR had on his.

Subject: Anti Perc System

Question:
I've just bought an intercooler kit from K-tec racing and the way the pipes lead it doesn't connect to the Anti Perc System is there a way of removing it completely and if there is are there any diagrams.

Answer:
Just unbolt the perc fan from the inner wing, remove any wiring that it is connected to and same for the pipework up to and including the valve on the bulkhead.
Don't forget to remove the turbo heatshield sensor and its wiring and the wiring from the carb sensor too.
The fuel feed pipe to the carb runs up through the perc fans pipework so you will have to remove this pipe and refit the fuel hose.

Subject: ""Cup Mod""

Question:
I've heard alot about Cup Mod what is it and what does it do. Are there any Pro's and any Con's and where can i find any diagrams on it. Sorry to be a pain

Answer:
The cup mod is basically the removal of the boost compensation circuit from the turbo elbow, carb and rearmost actuator pipe.
It is said that it reduces lag but i haven't noticed any differences.
It does make the engine bay a little neater as does the removal of the anti perc system from your last question! smile

Subject: Bugger !!!

Question:
My turbo makes a loud whining/screaming noise when accelerating/boosting (12 psi) up but theres no significant power loss.

I looked at the turbine blade after i took the air filter off and they seems a bit bent on the edges. It also moves slightly up/down and side to side...very slightly.

Is the blade the cause of my whining cos its imbalanced or rubbing the casing and will I need a new blower ?

If a new blower is needed, what should I be looking to pay to get it rebuilt to oem spec.

Its a Stage 4 Hybrid beauty from GT Tuning by the way.

Once again I thank you

Answer:
Sounds exactly like the blades hitting the casing.
You will need new wheel and bearings minimum and new casing, shaft and exhaust wheel possibly.
Anything from £200-1000 depending on who does the work.

Subject: little fingers

Question:
Hi wiz, what is the best way too stop little fingers turning up my in car boost, so it won't go bang. cheers.

Answer:
Get the max boost limited to a safe level under the bonnet.
Try using a three way bleed valve under the bonnet set to your max and a two way bleed valve in car to adjust from min to max or just buy a max boost limiter from one of the tuners.

Subject: heavy smoking

Question:
my car has just had a full rebuild but is smoking heavily the compression on cylinder 2 is way down and the plug is fouled up bad its under warranty but hes trying to fob me off but im not thick.hes saying its the valve guides or sommet in the head because the smoke dosent come out of the dipstick but piles out everywhere else if you put oil in the cylinder the compression comes up which obviously shows something in the cylinder or a ring promblem but he is still saying its in the head.give us a clue on what you think?

Answer:
It must be down to either valves not seating/bent/burned or rings not sealing/broken/incorrectly fitted.

Subject: MINOR REBUILD PT1 ETC

Question:
HI WIZARD. SOME QUESTION I CANT GET ANSWERS TOO BUT U WILL KNOW IM SURE! 1) WAS GIVEN A OIL COOLER BUT DONT KNOW WHAT TEMP IT SHOULD RUN AT?
2) WHAT SIZE JET AND CORRECTOR SHOULD I USE TO RUN 13 PSI.
3) IS THERE ANY DIFFERENCE IN THE PHASE 1 & 2 CAM ?
4) ON MY MINOR REBUILD IM RENEWING THRUST WASHERS, BIG AND MAIN BEARINGS, PISTON RINGS, BOTTOM HALF GASKET SET,VALVE STEM OIL SEALS, UPRATED HEAD GASKET SET AND HEAD BOLTS,TIMING CHAIN,AND ADJUSTER. IM THEN INSTALLING A FAST ROAD CAM AND RE JETING THE CARB WHAT ELSE SHOULD I DO. PISTON LINERS MAYBE?.
5) IF I MADE A SCREEN WASHER PUMP AND JET INTO MY BUMPER TO SPRAY WATER ON TO A FRONT MOUNTED INTERCOOLER WHAT WOULD SHOULD I MAKE IT DO/ WILL IT MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE? PS. I DO PLAN TO RAISE THE BOOST LATER WITH A BETTER TURBO. CHEERS WIZ UR THA MUTTS NUTS.

Answer:
1) About 80 degrees is normal, try a thermostat from someone like Mocal.

2) You may get away with standard jets for 13psi but a rolling road set up is allways recommended.

3) Yes.

4) Pistons and liners would be a good step as would a complete bottom end balancing.
This lot will add about £3-400 to the total rebuild price but would be worth it in the long run.

5) An intercooler spray should have atomised water to soak the intercooler in spray before using bigger boost. This along with the airflow over the cooler can lower charge temps.

Subject: Heavy Steering

Question:
Wiz,

I have noticed recently that the steering seems to be getting heavier and heavier, making my little nimble motor feel like a truck! I have coilover suspension (slightly lowered) and 195x40x16 wheels. I had the UJ and column bearings replaced in the past due to the vague handling of the car which has fixed that problem. Any help would be gratefully received.

Answer:
It could be that one of the steering componants is seizing up so try lubricating them with spray oil.

Subject: Blue smoke at idle

Question:
Hi Wiz,

Sorry to be a pain but here's question number 2 for today. My car seems to be belching out blue smoke and it's getting worse. The smoke is emitted a little bit on idle and when pulling away after idling for a while a huge plume of blue smoke comes out. I have noticed that there's oil in the boost hoses and intercooler but I was told that a small amount is common. I asked the garage to check the turbo last time it was in there and they said that there's no excessive play in the turbo. I have noticed that the turbo makes a squeeking noise on decompression too. Any ideas?

Answer:
If the turbo is squeaking then it is probably the compressor hitting the casing and it is likely to be knackered. This will cause the smoke.

Subject: knock knock revisited.....

Question:
Back again......
i have replaced the crankshaft bearings and this did get rid of the knocking noise for a day but now it is back. it makes much less of a noise than b4 but it is still there-would i need bigger bearings(0.5 instead of 0.25?) It is definetly knocking at the bottom of the engine as u can hear it.
thanks

Answer:
It is possible that the bearings need to be bigger ie 0.5 or it could be wear on the cam journals.

Subject: minor rebulid pt 2 etc

Question:
hi wiz just a couple more questions for ya.

1) while the engine is out so is my rad and was wondering because i have a large spare rad from my 16v astra and was going to fit a seperate oil cooler any way so can this be done and what would i need to do this.

2) im making my bonnet in to a badboy one but dont know wether to weld the extensions on the top or bottom side of the bonnet from the center to far side of the lights.

3) also adding a evo 6 vent how do i stop the engine gettin wet.

4) how can i tell a phase 1 and phase 2 engine apart? cause i got a spare but dont know what phase it is. thanks again wiz .

Answer:
1) If the bigger rad fits in the hole then you will just need to match up the pipes and make sure the rad fan switch is not too high for the 5.

2) Best off asking a welder or a person who has done this mod as i am too old to be a ""Bad Boy!"" smile

3) Don't go out in the rain! wink or make up some sort of deflector or maybe even a cover for when not driving the car.

4) Look at the engine number. I believe the phase 2 was 788 and the phase 1 was something else. (Memory is going!)

Subject: water pump?

Question:
hi wizz,

my 5 is overheating badly and water is being released through the gland on the water pump hose. does this sound like the water pump is knackered or is there another reason?

Answer:
Gland on the water pump hose???????

If you mean the bleed screw then it is a leak and must be fixed.
The only place any water should come out is the expansion bottle cap.
If the thermostat, fan/relay or water pump have failed then it will overheat.

Subject: cooling pipes fill with air when driving

Question:
hi

My top water hose from the rad 2 the pump keeps filling with air when driven.
With the car turned off i have blown into the header until only water comes from the bleed valve on the top hose.
The pipe then is full of water.
BTW - i have also made sure that there is water runnin thru the other pipe from the pump (the only other with a bleed valve).
So with water in the pipes i go 4 a test drive, within 2-3 miles the top hose is full of air again.
If i open the bleed valve air rushes out as does the the header too when i open that, the header releases air and sucks water back in to it from the system.

Im guessing that im suckin air in when i drive maybe thru a hole??
i cant find a hole or any water/air leaks but am getting very confused now.

thansk in advance for any help

cheers

Answer:
It could be the start of head gasket failure.
Try getting a compression test done to see if the gasket is leaking.
