Subject: Breather Pipes/Oily Intercooler and boost hoses Question: Hi Wiz, One of my breather pipes has been totally been mangled ! The hose in question is chucking out petrol smelling fumes like a steam engine ! I was wandering whether this is affecting my engine/performance, causing the erratic idle and an oily intercooler and boost hoses. If not, do you know what could be ? The only breather pipe I can see connected is to the back of the rocker cover, can u point out where the others should go. Its the other one connected to the little pot that s gone 'walkabout'. Youre help is greatly appreciated ! Big Up the Wizard ! Answer: If you have a standard setup then the pipe to the pot will go along the rear of the rocker cover and go to a ""T"" piece then onto the turbo ""U"" bend inlet pipe and the rear of the manifold. Any pipes disconnected or leaking will effect idle as it will be sucking in more air than normal and running leaner. The oily intercooler and pipes could be down to worn turbo seals. To test this, remove the pipe that goes to the turbo ""U"" bend and block the hole. Clean all the pipes and intercooler and go for a test drive. If there is new oil in the pipes then it is most likely turbo. If the pipes are clean then it may be valve stem oil seals. |

Subject: Not enough boost Question: When i accelarate hard in 4th the boost goes upto about 3/4 of the gauge and then the engine just stops accelaerating and kinda has a little stutter, the turbo should do 20psi and i know the actuater isn't opening, whats the problem? Could it be that the fuel flow can't keep up? Answer: is it poss for you to get hold of a pressure gauge to measure fuel pressure if yes fit it and note the fuel pressure off boost when you start to boost the pressure should rise with boost. hear is some figers (36, 24, 36, nice).....engine running at idle speed: 275+or-25mbar. fuel pressure=turbocharging pressure + fuel pressure at idling speed. this will tell you if you got a fuel pressure prob if its low start with reg its under the servo make sure all pipes are on correct exp the one from the carb top (boost). I hope this helps THE MASTER |

Subject: New carb? Question: Dear Wiz Need your help About a month ago the CO2 screw blew out, I replaced it but could'nt get the idle right took it round to a local garage, who thought it could be the carbs gaskets. Then took it to BB who replaced the gaskets and put a new alloy plenum carb top on, on the way home the car ran crap (jumping back and forth, using loads of petrol (150 miles to a tank!) cutting out now and again and finally poor starting). Took it back to them they replaced the bottom half of the carb, but I still had the probs just not kagarooing as bad . Took it back yesterday replaced a couple more things still not right, BB said it could be wear inside the carb which means I will need a NEW carb. Can you think of any thing else it could be or is it a case of a new carb if this is the case were should I try cause BB said they have ordered them but wait there is a 6 month back log. Sorry for the long a***d question but need your help P.S I am running adj boost but turned down to standard and standard jets etc Answer: If the car was ok before the screw blew out then i would say it was still leaking around the new screw or it's end was crushed when refitting. If it was doing this before then i would renew the fuel filter and get it on a rolling road to check what the fuelling is doing before shelling out a small fortune on a new carb. |

Subject: very heavy clutch Question: hi wiz!! when i bought my car the clutch was awful, u could bring it up to just before the bite point then it would just spring up so fast and heavy it jumps you forward and make you look like a learner driver! ive now fitted a 2nd hand gear box with 80k on it and a k-tec grp-n clutch 1k miles ago. But the problem is still just as bad! i know the car had a new clutch cable fitted just before i purchased the car and it might not be genuine, could this be the problem??? any other ideas what the prob could be cos im fed up of looking a nob round town in traffic and on hill starts??? cheerz wiz & i look forward to your reply Answer: Got a feeling you have got a modified clutch pedal try to find a std one and compare the two you might find that yours is longer above the pivot point. i have heard of clutch pedals like this for racing. a little tip find a shaft that fits in the bushes snugley make the shaft abit longer than the width of the pedal and bushes built up. build the pedal assy onto this shaft put cable onto pedal hold pedal in place and push your made up shaft out with the one thats on the pedal box.............i hope this helps |

Subject: Air cooled turbo Question: Hi Wizy just wondered if you could help me out I'm at the moment have a turbo customised to fit my five. The only thing is that it's an air-cooled turbo that I'm fitting to my phase 2 GTT! Am I right in thinking that the phase1 used an air-cooled turbo? What parts would I need off a phase 1 to air-cool this turbo on my phase2! Many thanks Log!! Answer: Yes most phase 1's were air cooled. You can use an air cooled turbo on a phase 2 but you will need to adjust the cooling pipes as they are no longer required to cool the turbo. |

Ive found that my rear fog light/reverse light aint goin. When i press the fog light switch the light dont come on in the dash but ive checked the switch with a working 1, fuse, junction in engine bay and even changed the cluster to 1 that was working on another 5 but still no fog light. The same with the reverse light, dont work, checked fuse connections etc. but still wont go. Subject: Boost Hose Question: 1/ I just bought Samco boost hoses. When I took the original hoses off, I saw that there was a sensor of some description (connected by two spade connections) on the short hose (left side of intercooler). What is this and is it a vital component? 2/ I can't find the sensor that sits on top of the heatshield. What's it's purpose, do I need it and, if so, how can I trace where it's at? 3/ Slight fuel leak in fuel line under chassis. (very fine jet when engine running) Could this be causing my starting problems? Thanks Brian Answer: 1) Overboost switch, esscential if you want to prevent overboosting if you get a problem. 2) This is one of the anti perc fan sensors and should be connected to the other sensor on the carb base. 3) Maybe but get it fixed NOW as fuel vapour and turbos equal FIRE!! |

Subject: Knock Knock!!!!! Question: Hi ya Wiz, i asked u a question a week ago about my lack of oil pressure!!! i put on a new oil pump and my pressure has returned and all the warning lights have gone off again..BUT.............. now i have an awful clackety noise from the bottom of the engine. it doesnt do it on idle and it doesnt do it when u take ur foot off the accelerator-only on acceleration does it occur. it is quite a loud continual noise. so what sort of damage did drivin my car w/out oil pressure do? the turbo is fine by the way. Does it sound like i will need new thrust, big end, or main bearings. if so can these be done with the engine in the car still? sorry 4 all the questions but i just want my 5 running perfect again. Answer: It does sound like bearing failure. Big ends can be done in situe but i expect you will have to remove the crank to replace the rest. |

Subject: Oil Question: Hi Wiz. Just a quick question.... what oil mixture should i be using in my engine? I've heard the fully synth oils are the best. Answer: Fully synthetic oils are designed for modern engines with low tolerances and the poor old 5 has quite large tolerances. I suggest a normal or semi synthetic oil 15W50 is about the best. |

Subject: Loosing Water Question: Hi Whizz, I seem to be having a little problem at the mo. I have to top up the water every two weeks and I dont use it the car much. The other day I noticed that air was leaking form the expansion cap. Is this likely to be because the seal has gone or is it because there is too much pressure in the water system. There are no deposits in the oil and it does not seem to be blowing out any water apart form a bit on startup. Should I replace the cap and can this be done without buying a new tank or could it be a pressure issue. Can this be tested at all. Thanks for your help Answer: Go for a new cap, a few quid from Renault. |
