Subject: Starts shit, kangaroos, fuel starvation?

Question:
Hello wizard, sorry this is a bit long!
I own an '89 5 GTX, since i have owned her, she has always been crap to start in the mornings..normally stalls.
Feels like the fuel isn't getting to the engine since even when I put my foot down on the throttle the engine will splutter and die.
I have put up with the prob cos normally after a few minutes and a 100 metre drive the prob sorts itself out! Today, the whole way down the 7 mile by-pass the car would only rev in intermittent bursts with my foot down and even pumping the throttle sometimes. Managed to pull into a petrol station, kangarooing my way to the entrance in 1st gear as the engine would keep failing to run consistently with constant throttle!
Most embarrasing and annoying!
What do you suggest wiz? It fells like the fuels only being delivered in bursts??? HELP!!!!

Answer:
Try fitting a new fuel filter and if this doesn't work it could mean a new pump.

Subject: Thermostadt

Question:
I've had my thermostadt out now since April and have had no problems (yet). I've read through other questions regarding the stadt but there is nothing clear on what damage this could be doing. The temperature usually remains at 1/4 on long journeys and 1/2 in the town. Is it because it's not getting up to working temp, cavitation of water pump?

Thanks

Daz

Answer:
You could get cavitation of the pump which is not healthy and also you will cause more engine wear as it will take longer to warm up.

Subject: hoses water boost fuel

Question:
Hi trying to rebuild my renault 5 gt turbo phase 1. I have put the engine back together but now i am stuck with all of the hoses. Where do they go i have tried the haynes manual and its doesn't show. Can you help? Do you have a diagram? What boost can i run safely on a standard turbo and head gasket?

Answer:
Try looking at the profile pictures and the diagrams in the files section for help.
The easiest thing to do is to fit the obvious ones and see what is left.
As for the boost, i would say no more than 12psi on standard jets and 16 psi max. Any more and the turbo will wear out too quickly.

Hi, wiz thanx in advance for your knowledge. As the winter nights are nearly upon us i am planning to take the car off the road. Is there anything i should do to it when its in the garage i.e start it up once a week etc...

You should leave the car on axle stands or blocks to prevent tyre problems and run it to working temperature at least once a month if not weekly. Leave the handbrake off to prevent seizure.

Subject: Oil gone bonkers??????

Question:
I had just got my 5 running fine, the first for ages. i got in her last nite, started it up and the oil light stayed on????? the oil pressure was at 0 and the red light on the temp gauge also stayed on. I drove it a little way and i am getting a really loud knocking noise from the engine, sounds like near the front- it subsides a little when i take my foot off of the accelerator.

I have checked both my oil and water levels and they are both fine. It drives like normal still but it has this crappy noise and as mentioned earlier all the dash lights are tellin me things aint right....confused

Could this indicate that the oil pump has given up the ghost or is it something much more sinister???

Thanks.

Answer:
Sounds like the oil pump has gone and you driving it with no pressure will have wrecked the bearings etc.

Subject: lead substitute

Question:
i am currently using millers vsp plus lead substitute and octane booster. it comes in a small bottle and i use a bottle every time i fill the car up with lead free four star. Do you think this is ok?

Answer:
I would suggest swopping to optimax or super unleaded and just put the odd bottle of lead substitute in if you can't find a garage that sells real 4 star.

The vaccuum will keep the dump valve open at idle unless you get a stiffer spring fitted.

What turbo/carb and valve is it?

Subject: Windscreen seal

Question:
Wiz, I'm trying to lay my hands on a front windscreen seal. Unfortunatley Renault are only listing one seal, which is a one piece unit (the one that I have taken off is a two piece unit, one of which presses into the other and then onto the screen) the screen is also bonded. It would appear that the one which I have been supplied with just isn't wide enough. Can you shed any light?

Thanks.

Answer:
Try mobile windscreens as they do the fitting kit and bonding set.

Subject: oil light and pressure

Question:
Wiz,
my oil pressure gauge doesn't work and i get worried that if the pressure was down i wouldn't know.I don't think my oil light works either because it didn't illuminate when i gave it a service the other day and doesn't illuminate with just the ignition on.How would i go about fixing these,i've fiddled with the wireing at the turbo feed pipe but still no luck.it ocasinaly jumps up but fluctuates from 0 to 6 then dies.where is the oil light sensor????.or how easy is it to install a oil pressure gauge, where does it hook up to.Thanks loads wiz

Answer:
follow the oil feed pipe from the turbo to the engine you will find it ends up going to a union at the block, at which you will find a round sensor with two wires going to it one does the pressure and the other does the warning light if you earth one of these wires(one at a time not both) to earth ie the block, .if both work doing this then its your sensor if one doesnt or both its wiring or dash. be lucky you been talking to THE MASTER

Subject: Hole in Engine!!

Question:
Dear wizard please help me. I purchased a new short engine from Prima Racing a few weeks ago and after 1800 miles No3 piston had shattered and a large hole was made in the back end of the casting. I was still running it in, not going over 2000 revs or 60mph. I changed the oil after the first 500 miles and there was no debris in the oil pump to suggest that the big end had been seizing. The con rod had snapped at the top of the big end (where the long thin bit meets the circle) and was black all around the big end from excessive heat. Although cracked, the piston still has a smooth surface on top showing no signs of detonation and the heat was only at the bearing end of the con rod. There is a mark on the bottom of the cylinder head and prima have said to me that this is where on putting the head on, something must have got in it and been trapped between the piston and head that the piston has struck. Because I used my original engine components, i.e. The head, prima are blaming it on me! Do you think this is their fault or my fault? If something was in there than why did it only smack the piston after 1800 miles? The turbo isn’t blown and the intercooler looks ok. It was running standard boost and ran fine up until the incident. When I took the snapped con rod out of the sump where I found it, one of the nuts on it was on the end of its thread. Could it be possible that on building the engine they weren’t torqued up correctly and one of them came loose, extending the pistons travel enough for it to strike the head? I have pictures of everything if you want them sent or I can phone you to discuss further, your help would be appreciated on this one.

Answer:
i take it that they supplied a comlete bottom end. couple of things that i can think of did it come with a new oil pump and drive boss off the camshaft (dissy drive) if yes, check that the oil pump drive has not rounded off. have you looked at the other big ends are they in any way damaged if yes oil feed prob if no, no 3 bearing has failed they may have left swarf in the oil gallery in the crank to the journal. as for any mark or dent in the piston top this would not damage the big ends. all of the above should be down to them. the only thing that i can think of that might be your falt is have a look at the sump has it been damaged in any way ie dented inwards if it is then that would block the oil pick up and they could say that you dropped the block onto the sump and blame you . please let me know how you get on be lucky you been talking to THE MASTER

Subject: Head Gasket

Question:
Whilst on the way to the RTOC National Day my Renault 5 GT turbo was running fine all the way from Kent.

After 230 miles, I stopped to stretch my legs and when I pulled in the car was fine. Next thing I notice steam from the front driver's side of the bonnet, the temperature gauge rapidly rising and slight smoke from the exhaust.

I was hoping it would be just a split water pipe or something but the RAC man reckoned it to be more likely the head gasket?

Any advice on checking and changing it at?

To make make things worse they gave me a 1ltr Nissan Micra courtesy car - Arrghh!

Many thanks

Answer:
Check that the fan works as this is a common cause of overheating.

If you still think it is headgasket then get a compression check done to see where it has gone.

Subject: Running like a bag of S***

Question:
Just picked up my car from the garage after having new copper brake pipes fitted. The last time i drove it, it was running nicely and was pretty quick.
Since then i've fitted a GT tuning ""Group A"" carb. Everything but the engine internals are uprated although the fuel pump i'm using is off my old phase 1. Now when you boot it, it picks up untill about 2500rpm but won't pull any more after that and sounds as though it's misfiring. The turbo sounds fine and is in good condition.
Is it likely the garage of damaged the fuel pressure regulator when they changed the brake pipes? I'm sure the fuel pumps alright although it buzzing pretty loudly, but has done since i can remember.
Any ideas? Thanks.

Answer:
I suppose the garage could have damaged the regulator or pipes but it could just be down to fuelling due to the new carb.
Try fitting a standard carb to see if the problem goes.

Subject: carb 2

Question:
sorry its just a standard carb the only mod to my engine is polished and ported head, thanks

Answer:
If you screw the screw in then you are making the mixture richer as you are restricting the airflow. Screwing it out a little to weaken the mixture may help but it could be down to other things like a blocked air filter.
