Subject: Speedo reading & Tyre pressures

Question:
Hi, what kind of pressures should I be running in my 195/45/15 tyres?

Also does anybody do a replacement speedo face which show the correct speed when running 15"" wheels? This would stop me from having panic attacks when passing plod and gatsos!

Cheers

Phill

Answer:
around 26-32 psi, it depends on personal choice.

you have to adjust this yerself, with alittle guesswork :-(

Subject: boost readings

Question:
ok ,

what you think of this,

got of my a***, and installed my boost gauge today,

half way through i realised shit, better test the gauge actually seeing as i didn't know it worked, so i took the supply from the back of the dash boost gauge and whacked it in,

took for a spin and the gauge was reading 15 psi, the spider valve was preset at Power engineering on rollers at 1bar, fine i thought, as 14.7 psi would be hard to judge on the needle,

then once i finished it, i plumbed the gauge in properly, into the ecu line,

started her up, and had vacuum, about -10psi

on full load however it was only reading 12psi, now what i thinking is that the boost gauge in dash is shit, now correct me if i'm wrong but it comes off the carb boost circuit, so what i'm tring to say is

when the boost was setup at PE i remember him plumbing in gauge into carb circuit, so basically, its not running at 1bar but 12psi, which would explain why the car dosen't feel as powerful as it used to before it went there, at the time PE said it was boosting well over its supposed 16psi setup, but now i reckon it wasn't

sorry for long post, but what i'm saying is if i now reset boost so my new gauge reads 16psi, it should ,make more power

btw the fuelling is spot on

Answer:
you are probably reading from a differnt point to what PE were reading from.
you are reading what the engine actual sees from the ecu line....rather than what the top of the carb sees like the standard gauge reads.....usually a difference of a few psi...

Subject: oil in expansion tank

Question:
i have definately isolated the prob to the turbo, it is definately smoking near the exhaust housing seals.

With some smoke out of the exhaust now and again. There is no play on the turbo shaft at all, i have also noticed oil in the expansion tank but none in the rocker cover and the car does not overheat in any way. The head gasket has been replaced recently with a grp a from k-tec.

HELP !! what my options ?

Answer:
could be oil being fed back into the turbo from the breater system. get an oil breather filter.
if this dont work then still suspect the turbo.

i wouldn't worry about the oil in the water unless it noticabley gets worse

Subject: Difficult to start

Question:
When i first start my 5 it just about idles but sounds as though it will cut out. If you so much as touch the accelerator it cuts out instantly but revs like made if i pull the choke out. Once it its been started it runs OK and will start again (soon after being turned off) with no problems.

Is this more likely to be just an air leak at the base of the carb, so just replace the gaskets, or will i need to overhaul the carb?

Thanks

Answer:
the carb is still cold, it needs to heat up alittle to help vapourise the fuel properly.

do you still use a choke?

Subject: Car wont start

Question:
Hey Wizard

I cant get my car started it just turns over and then dies it is occasionally back firing as well!!

I think that I have a carb problem and maybe a blocked hose but how do I find out which one??This first happened the other day and I had to leave it over night then the next day it started fine but now it wont do anything

Answer:
sounds like it could be a broken timing sensor wire. check to see is it hasnt come in contact with the turbo and fried...

Subject: erratic idle

Question:
When i have been giving my car a hard run it sometimes cuts out or the idle becomes erratic. i pull the car over lift the choke up start the car and it goes from 5k to 1k revs it keeps on doing this until i switch the ignition off leave it for a minute the turn it over again, but when i rev it whilst in gear if the turbo kicks in the car stalls again. Have had the manifold gasket replaced and the fuel filter changed now confussed.

Answer:
sounds like it could be a case of overfuelling.
after a good run your plugs could be sooted up...check them and report back. ;-)

Subject: what size

Question:
whats the biggest turbo you can use on a r5t not to bothered about lag thats only a little problem lookin for top speed so need a turbo that not going to get out of puff at 6000 to 8000rpm.

Answer:
a T3/T25 turbo comes on boost around 3.5k revs and carries on going.
a T3/T3 or bigger is going to come on really late, and you'll have to rev it to about 10k i think to make it worthwhile!!!

Subject: Engine flushing

Question:
Please could you advise me if an engine flush is a worthwhile task when changing the oil, and what oil do you think is best.

Answer:
its probably not a good idea to use an engine flush on such an old engine...its better to flush it out with really cheap nasty oil a couple of times. then put in the semi or fully synth stuff ;-)

Subject: yet another perc question.

Question:
Hi wiz,

I have read all the perc answers but non seem to answer my question.
ok here it goes - my perc fan died and some wires melted and caught fire, i have fixed them apart from one.
Its the brown wire that goes to the switch on the manifold that i am asking where does this actually connect to as i only have the end attached to the switch left, am i right in saying that the other wire(red/greyish) goes to the alternator as well?
Btw i dont have a sensor on the heatsheild as the car has never had one since ive had it.

Answer:
Only one wire goes to the alternator, the other goes to the perc fan relay.

Subject: Cams and stuff

Question:
Hello Wiz,
Right....I have been checkin up on the whole cam thing...I have been told that thoose profiled for N/A cars are no good for turbo cars...which is not surprising....what I want to know is do you know if the tuners have had their cams specifically profiled to deal with the attributes of the R5 turbo engine. I.e. the overlaps, duration etc....

Also I understand that the cams can give a good amount of power provided that it is the right one and that it is done in conjuction with things like a flowed head...more airflow..etc....will flowing or skimming a head reduce the strength of the block...or even the lightening and balancing of the bottom end ?

I have also heard about Head Fasteners as opposed to head bolts..supposed to give a tighter hold while stressing the block less? have you come across these ?and what is your opinions on these ?

Answer:
Tuners used to just use the standard piper 270/285 cams, but now they use combinations of the 2 even, the piper 300...

flowing and skimming the head will not reduce the block strength. it will increase the air flow and the compression ration.

i have heard of these head stud thingies...but mainly on yank tanks.
maybe not such a good idea on the 5 dues to the tight space in the rocker cover....

Subject: Top speed

Question:
Wiz,

On the motorway in my five. Got it 2 bout 100mph and the needle just froze there. Turbo was spinnin, the engine did not seem to be straining. Could the speedo just be out cos im on 17"" wheels or is it something more sinister such as inadequate fueling? p.s (haven't had my carb rejetted yet). Any ideas?

Answer:
the needle actually corkscrews out slightly as it moves...check to see it aint actually stuck on the inside of the dash glass!

Subject: BANG!

Question:
one dump valve on my GTTURBO recently and not long after had heard a hissing sound, which sounded like a air leak. I checked all boost hoses and couldn't find the leak. So frystrated i booked it with Prima Racing in Nottingham which is the closest to Leicester. Anyway they spent 10 mins on the car charged me £50 frown and sorted the problemsmile.

It was the the dump valve not sitting properly on the T-Piece.

My problem now is that when i drive normally with the turbo boosting above half way the car runs MINT. However when flooring it makes a loud bang scary one, and the revs/turbo drop for a split second then i carry on driving and it is o.k.... Could you suggest how this could happen.

PLS i have a little boy and i don't wanna scared the lights outta him. Cuz it only happens on full boost floored and is very SCARY!!!!!

Cheers.

Answer:
there is a boost pressure sensor on the pipe that goes from the turbo to the intercooler...pull one of the black wires that are attached to it off. then take it for a run..... there should be no more bangs.

ALSO IF THE SWITCH ON THE SMALL BOOST HOSE WAS NOT WORKING I.E (INTERCOOLER TO TURBO) WHAT WOULD HAPPEN???

PLS i have a little boy and i don't wanna scared the lights outta him. Cuz it only happens on full boost floored and is very SCARY!!!!!

Answer:
if the switch didn't work nothing would happen, it detects boost pressure. if you boost to high it cuts the engine...which is what is happening to you.

Subject: How low can I go?

Question:
Hi wiz how are you mate?

Just pondering on how low I can go with 195/45/15 on? I have the car down 35mm at the mo and want to slam it after seeing a gtt with the a*** on the deck!!! smile, can i get it down 90mm without fettling the arches and can i fit 90mm springs to the standard struts?
oh yer and will my tyres get eaten on the inside at that hight?

thanks loads
Adam

Answer:
For a car to be slammed 90mm you really need to fit coilovers or a modified strut as the shocks will be bottomed out and not working correctly.
You will probably need to do some arch work too.

Subject: Oil Pressure

Question:
I have a problem with Oil pressure. I have just bought a Renault 5 GT Turbo (89) It has a knackered turbo. We noticed really bad oil pressure, bellow 0. We have replaced the oil pump, oil Filter fresh Mobil 1 15w50 oil and a shinny clean sump.

The gauge now when the engine is stated sits at about 2 then drops down to 0. When your rev to 2500 - 3000 the pressure goes up to 2,3,4 ish. Any ideas as I do not want to put a new turbo on and below it.

Answer:
the gauge in the dash is only a guide..if the clocks have been replaced with a white dial kit then more than likely the needle has been replaced incorrectly.

Subject: electric windows

Question:
my drivers side electric window has packed in. I have tested the fuses and its not that. what you suggest it is the motor??
also i have managed to get the window stuck half way down and i cant force it back up, so therefore i cant use the car until i sort it out. any idea how i could get the window back up??

cheers wiz

Answer:
you need to take the interior door card off.
you'll probably find its actually just the connection to the top of the window motor that needs cleaning....as water just happens to drip on it and corrode it!
