Subject: wont start

Question:
hiya wiz,
right then mayb u can help...
my car will turn over but wont start.
its not the fuel pump coz ive bridged the wires an it works. its not the fuel pump relay(1 behind the fuses) as this has been renewed.
now for the tricky part...ive carried out all the tests in the haynes manual to fault find on the electronic ignition and the results half point to the ecu. however how are you supposed to check the timing sensor gap without removing loads of stuff first? there is no spark at the king lead although the coil checked out ok in the tests. can i use a coil from ne 5 or just the 1 from a gtt?
sorry its long winded i just want to sort it out now.

cheers, ur help is much appreciated,
sonof.

Answer:
Easiest thing is to replace the ecu with a known good one from another gtt and see if it works.
Have you tried the relay near the ecu that supplies its power as these have been known to fail and have dodgy wiring.
Also there is no point trying to check the gap, just replace the sensor with a known good one to eliminate it.

Subject: Smoke in my eyes!!!!

Question:
Alrite Wiz,
I was drivin along and my car just suddenly cut out-all electrics, radio, everything. Pulled over and smoke came through my air vents for about 4 seconds!!! Tried to start it and there was no respnse- although the dash lights and radio were now working.
I popped the bonnet and there was an electrical burning smell. Looked at the battery and there is a wire coming through the bulkhead by the carb( i assume this is to the starter motor) and it had burnt off at the battery end. Is this just a case of reconnecting the wire and my 5 will fly again??
thanks
Liam.

Answer:
Assuming that the wire or any close to it haven't burnt through the insulation then it should be fine to fit a new end and reconnect it.

Subject: Testing a relay

Question:
hi wiz, I was wondering if their was any simple way to test if a relay is working - in particular the relay to the cooling fan./ I ask this as i got hold of a secondhand one but everything is pointing again to the relay. thanks in advance

Answer:
Simply, if the relay clicks then it is activating, whether or not you are getting a good contact is a different matter!
You can usually bridge the two thicker wires to it to get the power to the fan direct but this should only be used as a test not perminantly.

Subject: running rough!! again!!!

Question:
Hi wizard,
Thanks for your reply.

i had the same problem again with it not ticking over and when i looked i had lost the air screw again so i have put yet another 1 in but im not sure how much its suposed to be screwed in, it runs better when you unscrew it a bit but then i end up loosing it. Is there a a certain amount of turns you should give it to get it right??

Thanx again

Sam x

Answer:
Turn it in all the way, but be carefull not to do it tight as you will damage the point. Then screw it out 2.5 turns to be about right. After you get it set correctly, put some silicon sealer or even a genuine Renault plug in the hole.

Subject: Not running right

Question:
thanx in advance for your wizdom ,wiz.on friday night i was driving along and everything seemed ok , but then the car started to judder quite bad. so i pulled in and the car wouldnt tick over. as soon as the revs dropped below 1000 revs it would cut out. so i moved the tick over screw a bit and everything seemed ok for about 100 miles but now it ticks over ok ,but every 20 miles or so it gives a judder and stalls. if i wait 2 minutes and start it again its ok for another 20 miles. thanx again .

Answer:
Sounds like classic fuel pump relay problems.
Try replacing it with a known good one.

Question:
ok,

listen i really need to fix a problem i have,

after being armed my alarm keeps going off,

hence it being switched off, shame really, some f***er breaks in,

the interior light seems to be on with the doors shut,

what do i do to eliminate every thing so it works, please help me, i think i'll try jacking the doors up a bit, but i need to look at the switches on the door,

Answer:
I would say it was a short or problem with the door switches not making the circuit when the door is closed.

Subject: delocking

Question:
ok, sorry for all the questions at once,

basically whats involved in a delocking, is it a simple matter of removing the locks and filling hole???

and will a 'normal' bodywork shop do it for me,

whats the cost normally, i know the bloke so he can probably do me a deal , but i need to know what it normally costs

hope you can help me,

many thanks

Luke(ralph)

Answer:
A proper job involves a metal plate being welded into the hole but if done incorrectly this will warp the door skin.
Any body shop should be able to do it but i cannot say how much as you will need the door respraying as well.

Subject: Smokey joe

Question:
Hey Wiz, I have recently rebuilt my engine which included changing all the rings and replacing a liner and a piston ( not with new parts, well except the rings) It seemed to be running fine until about 80 miles into it when I stopped at a roundabout and plumes of smoke came out of the exshaust which was oily smoke. I have a funny feelin its coming through the oil breather and dumping into my turbo, its very intermittent. At first I thought the turbo had gone but its boosting well ( a bit to well maybe) and the oil pressure holds a steady 4 on the gauge. It starts up easy although idle speed is not very smooth as it varies from 1000 - 1500 when sitting still, I have just rebuilt the carb though and I am not sure I set up the jets correctly. As well as a cure for my smoke could you suggest how many turns the mixture screw is out from all the way in? Its a phase 1 running a stage 2 turbo that never seem to stop boosting until i ease off the acellerator. Is that normal too? I am sure if I just kept on accelerating it would just carry on boosting until it went pop. Cheers for you valuable time smile

Answer:
the turbo can carry on boosting, even if the oil seals have blown. This unfortunately sounds like what has happened to your beasty....
Although.....
It might be summat else....try putting an oil breather filter on the return pipe to the U shaped air filter pipe...this stops oil being returned to the turbo inlet...and hence stops smoking....

Subject: dont be stupid

Question:
is it possible to make my renault 5 gtt into a 4wd is this expensive, and would it be faster

Answer:
Yes it would be VERY expensive.
The GTT engine is the wrong way round, as all 4 wheel drive cars as far as im aware have the engine and gearbox inline, pointing down the centre of the car.
so you are looking at a few options.
either:
stick another 5 turbo engine in the back. a la Europarts...
or
take and engine and complete running gear out of a 4x4 car and graft it into a 5. this has been done before and cost around £8000 for a cossie lump and running to fit!

Subject: missing a beat

Question:
Hi wiz

my prob is that when the car reaches full turbo pressure currently about 15psi it cut out really badly. U then release then right foot and drive steady its fine but tickover is high 1400rpm. The car has many mods including grpA carb body but i suspect fueling, any ideas?

cheers soapy

Answer:
It sounds like you are hitting the overboost switch.
If you still want it connected then you will have to adjust it so it is a little higher than the boost you are running. If not then just disconnect it.

Subject: Induction Kits

Question:
Bonjourno oh noble 1. I recently spent my hard-earned cash on a mint 5 turbo, completely standard apart from a bailey valve. Its got a K & N panel filter inside the standard box, and the temperature always stays in between the first and second needle even during and after a good old thrashing. Can you recommend the BEST Iduction kit, expensive or not, and one that wont make the temp rise cause there so close to the turbo!!!
(Had a piper x on my old one and the engine practically fried, but it didnt have a heat shield...???) any ideas?

Answer:
you could try repositioning the airfilter, by cutting the U shaped tube so that it is a 90° bend instead of a 180°...then the air filter will lie behind the intercooler instead....
best to check for room first though ;-)
alot of the filters are very similar....so i can't really give you a pointer to the best one.

Subject: Flywheel

Question:
Hi, Im considering getting a lightend and balanced flywheel what difference will i notice...(if any)????

Answer:
The car will pick up easier between gear changes. It'll also not idle as well, cos there is less weight to keep the engine turning over properly at low revs ;-)

Subject: Oil pressure gauge.

Question:
Wiz,
the oil pressure gauge on my new motor, is, want for want of a better word...Dodgy!
It sits at 2-3 bar, and never goes above this. The car has only done 10,000 miles from new, so I can't imagine that it could be wear. Is it the sender, or the gauge. Or could it be the oil pump. I'm worried in case it's knackering the engine. How can I test all these components.

Thanks
Bryn

Answer:
sounds like the sender connections may need looking at.
It sounds very unlikely that its the oilpump, as that should pump more oil as you rev the car...i.e its very design means it can't maintain a constant pressure at differing revs! (impossible!?!)

Subject: top speed

Question:
Wizard. Iv owned my 1990 Gtt for 4 years and ran an E reg Gtt for two years before that. Iv never had a problem obtaining the 120 mph max on etiher car until recently. About six months ago the top end droped by 10mph on the m25. About a month later after failing to shake off the white van man it would not go over 100. My turbo smokes a bit when warming up and it’s real old. Can this be the cause?

Answer:
does it feel like your turbo isnt working any more? i had a turbo pack up on my car once and it i couldn't get over 90mph!

If the turbo is still spinning then it could be a compression or ignition problem. i.e under high load the sparkplug isnt operating properly and not igniting the fuel mixture...ie. similar to firing on 3 cylinders.
-Does the engine shake abit when you reach your max speed of 100mph?

Subject: another d/v question

Question:
hi wizzy
about a week ago my dumpvalve stopped making the trade mark ""PPPPCCCHHHIII"" noise and started making a fluttering noise, no prob i thought, diaprams gone.... but it had'nt, ive lost no boost at all, all the turbo hoses seem ok, pipes from the ecu seem ok, im stuck, have u any ideas?
or should i just use this as a excuse to get some nice silicone hoses and see what happens!!!

Answer:
You got an air leak elsewhere.
Try either the T piece from the ecu air pipe. Or the hose connection to the manifold, as it often splits here. all guaranteed to make a 'fluttering' sound....

Subject: Knocking and clunking :( Help!!!

Question:
Hey wizard,

I have this knocking sound coming from the rear which increases as I speed up, such as one knock per wheel revolution maybe? When I go at 10mph or less the knocking changes to a clunking noise, like you would expect the exhaust to be dragging along the tarmac..but it aint! Can you suggest what i should be looking at to get it fixed?? Thanks

Answer:
rear wheel bearings,
or your rear disc is about to drop off! -it does happen!

maybe a little severe..but it all needs checking...take the rear wheel off and have a good look at the calipers and discs.

Subject: Oil Pressure Guage Fluctuates

Question:
Hi, my oil pressure gauge sits pretty when running in the low revs, just under 4 PSI but when I accelerate it drops right down to around 2PSI (fluctuates quite alot in general but only when IU accelerate). Oil levels are fine, the engine is running sweet. I have ordered an Oil Pressure Sender Switch which was £56 so if it ain't that I'm lost. Let me know what you think, cheers boss

Answer:
have you tried cleaning the terminals? alot of crap gathers at the front of the engine!
failing that check the dash circuitry....

Subject: air leak?

Question:
hi wiz i hav an air leak on my car,on idle it wont tickover hardly mixture screw wont adjust, tried another carb still same ,got hold of all new gaskets and jets and rebuit my own, still same check all pipe work 4 air leaks non found ,someone told me to check the ecu diaphram but how do i this?whats the chances of the manifold or gasket failure?any revs above 2000rpm the car is spot on co 2-3percent hc 200ppm,on tickover co0.20 hc 1200ppm!!!!please c if u can help.

Answer:
you check the ecu diaphragm, by sucking on the hose coming from the ecu....if you can suck, then its fecked!

check all the sensors, and one way valves on the manifold too....
one may be loose or faulty...check valves by sucking/blowing ;-)

Subject: Clutch

Question:
When I boot my 5 and in the same gear for long time when taking bends etc. The clutch goes soft and I have to double clutch it to get it in the next gear. I have a comp clutch which is only 6 months old. This problem started about 2 months ago. why is this. Not sure if clutch cable is genuine does that make a difference?

Answer:
the clutch cable does make a difference...worthwhile carrying a spare, as they are £10 from ECP/GSF. £15 from renault themselves.
it sounds like the ratchet at the top of your clutch pedal may be worn, you might need to change it.

Subject: White Smoke

Question:
far as know the gasket has been replaced 3months ago.

But when the car has been idling for about 10 minutes or so i get white smoke comming out the exhaust and manifold area, i also get some oil in the expansion tank.

Answer:
you may have got oil in the water system from when the head gasket was changed last time!

white smoke coming from the manifold and exhaust areas sounds like condensation evaporating.....;-)
