Subject: Reverse Light Switch Question: Heyah, my reverse light won't go out from the point when I start my car! I've taken the bulb out for now and even after consulting my Haynes manual I can't easily locate the switch. I guess its on the gearbox, please can you tell me specifically where it is before I try to jack up my lowered beastie. Cheerz, Jamie. Answer: Reach down the side near the ineer wing and it is on the end of the box with a wire leading up to behind the passenger headlight. |

Subject: Side-Skirts Question: Hiya, My side-skirts are falling off after a drunken collegue used one as a step out of my wagon. What would you recommend to refit them in a permanant manor?! I was thinking of bonding on a L-shaped strip to the bodywork so I could have a flat perpendicular surface to glue the side-skirt to. Whadda you think? Thank you, Jay Answer: Get the proper side skirt clips from Renault as they are only a few pence each and allow it to move rather than break if someone else steps on it! |

Subject: converting from ph1 to ph2 Question: I am converting my cooling system from ph1 to ph2. Where is the place to put the bracket for the degassing chamber. The bracket only has a single hole to fit it. Niels Answer: It goes to the stud that secures the bottom of the headlight. |

Subject: increasing boost Question: I have just rebuilt my engine with steel liners and forged pistons. The headgasket is 2,4mm. How far is safe to increase the boost, for a realiable drive. How far in gauge shaded area and which jets. Niels Answer: With forged pistons and steel liners you could run over 30psi! For reliability I would say right to the end of the gauge with 135 main jet will give you about 16-18psi and enough fuel for 160-180 bhp. |

Subject: Sudden loss of acceleration Question: Sometimes when i start the car from cold, once i get to 3rd gear and up, there is a sudden loss of power above about 3500rpm, i can bury my foot yet the car will not accelerate. If i try to push the point the engine starts to splutter, but the turbo sounds like its still spinning away hapilly. Strange thing is though, if i pull over to the side of the road, turn off the engine, wait for 5 to 10 mins and restart, the problem is gone and it drives perfectly. Is this fueling or something more serious? Ta. Answer: It could just be a jetting problem but it could also be a dodgy fuel pump relay. Try replacing this with one from another car that you know is good. |

Subject: Adjustable Boost not adjusting boost Question: When i bought my baby, it came with a boost pressure adjuster mounted in the cockpit. Yet it seems to do nothing. It has two hoses coming out of it, on goes to nowhere (which i assume its meant to) the other connects into the jungle of pipes up near the carb. What would prevent it adjusting the boost? Could it be somehow bypassed yet still look connected? Answer: The hose under the bonnet must go to a ""T"" piece in the frontmost actuator pipe to adjust the boost. |

Subject: Electric Windows Question: My (tinted) electric windows both seem to be dis-attached from the ""thing"" (showing my technical knowledge here :-) ) which drives the window up and down. When i lower the window, the motor goes, then the window follows a couple of seconds later under the power of gravity to rest on whatever it has been disattached from. When i raise the window, it goes up fine until you get to the end of the slant at the front, then the front edge fo the window seems to stick but the back keeps going, so i have to apply pressure to the back of the window so it rises straight. Also my passenger window seems to have ""come of the rails"" as I can hear the motor rotate, but no movement on the window. The window can be pushed down by hand though. Cheers (i think this is the last question for the moment =] ) Answer: You will need to strip out the door panel to gain access to the mechanisms and see what is loose or broken before getting back to me. |

Subject: ticking noise Question: hiya wiz, right then here goes... when i first start my car after its been left for a few hours its very spluttery and seems to be firing on only 2 or 3 cylinders. if i leave it to idle on full choke it will sort itself out in about 30 seconds or so but if i give it some revs it will pick up quicker but i can hear a distinct metallic ticking noise. this can still be heard at low revs whether the engine is cold or hot. to add insult to injury the temp gauge has started rising quite quickly when on boost, from first segment to top of second in about 30 seconds, dropping back down when off boost. im starting to think that its either the head gasket or a piston ring/s. ive just fitted silicone hoses(the 2 bleed ones) and a green cotton air filter. any help would be greatly appreciated. cheers, sonof. Answer: The ticking noise could be a loose manifold nut or two or maybe a blown manifold gasket. If the inlet side of the gasket is blown too then you may be running lean with the filter making it worse and be heating up due to this. Are you sure you have bled the cooling system properly as this will show up as well if there is air in the system. |

Subject: Rusted Clutch Question: The car has been unused for almost 2 years and as a result i think the clutch has rusted to the fly wheel as i can't change gear. Is there any way i can seperate the two with out droping the gear box out.. Answer: I would say that if repeated use of the pedal doesn't free it then you could try removing the inspection plate from the bottom of the flywheel/gearbox area and lever it from there. |

Subject: wont start Question: i've just bought my first gtt. i was told that it needed a new head gasket, so i changed that. the car is turning over but not starting. there is only 12 volts comming from the coil. i think it is the Immobiliser. how can i get it started. Answer: 12 volts from the coil? I take it you have checked for a spark and there isn't one. Check out the ignition timing sensor wires are connected and not broken and then if the fuel pump is quiet also then it could be the relay by the ignition module. |

Subject: Windscreen Question: Hi wiz , how are you? After following a jarvis rail Van at a resonable distance (the two second rule) a large object was flung at my screen and left me with a lovely bullet hole behind the rear veiw mirror. I was wondering is is a easy job to change the windscreen on a 5GTT cos Autoglass have quoted me £205 for a new one with a new seal kit that is apparently required. I would rather get a second hand screen and fit it myself but can I re-use my old seal (looks in good condition). If not can I buy a new kit? Any help would be SMASHING ![]() (sorry bad un) Cheers Adam Answer: You are best off getting new as it is bonded in place as well as the seal. Most insurance companies will do windscreen claims for excess only and it won't effect no claims bonus. |

Subject: CUTS OUT Question: just put my engine back together took it out for a test drive ,when the revs get round to 5000rpm the engine cuts out ,when you let your foot of the gas its alright the engine picks up again. Subject: smoke Question: i have just done the head gasket put it all together and when it gets warm there is grey smoke smoke out of the exhaust?? i was told to change the turbo so i done that still the same but the engine never smoked before the gasket went?? it dont smoke when under pressure only at idle or when you let off the throttle!??? Answer: If you have allowed all the crud in the exhaust to build up with the blown gasket then it may take a while to burn off. If the exhaust is free of crud then it must be either valve stem oil seals or turbo seals. |

Subject: Water leak Question: When it rains the passenger side door seems to let water in through the speaker hole and through the top of the door. Ive taken off the trim and sealed up the membrane around the speaker but it still seems to be doing it. Any suggestions? Answer: It could be that the seal across the door around the window base is leaking. Try blocking it up with duct tape or similar and see if it cures the problem before shelling out for a new seal. |

Subject: 21 Turbo Lump Question: Alrighty then, asking this question on behalf of a friend. My mates got a Renault 19 16v Phase 1 and he was wondering if it was possible on fitting a Renault 21 turbo engine phase 1 or phase 2 and gearbox as he loves his car but it's so slow. 1) Can i use the original engine mounts 2) Has anyone or company ever done this conversion 3) Is this conversion possible? 4) Do i use the 21's driveshafts, gearbox e.t.c. Sorry to be a pain. I know that if is possible i'm going to get roped into it unfortunately. Cheers Turbo Wizard Answer: Anything can be made to fit in any car but i have never heard of anyone doing this convesion before. Try comparing the bits from each car by measuring etc and see for yourself if you think you can do it. |

Subject: dizzy? Question: Can you help me on this one? My car wouldn't start after a heavy downpour, but i had a spark at the king lead, so thought it was getting lost in dizzy cap, i took it off to find bit of crap buildup on the contacts and slight condensation in there, also there is a crack in it, cleaned contacts, wiped it out (had to remove spark plugs as they were coated in oil after cranking it over for so long) Eventually it started but is misfiring a bit, will stall even when warmed up and is emitting black sooty smoke from exhaust, also the dump valve is dumping as if i were driving normally - i have ordered a new dizzy cap, do ya reckon it will solve this problem? Answer: New dizzy cap is a must. Oily plugs will be due to either valve stem seals leaking or turbo seals leaking. Just leaving the car stood should not cause a problem of fouling. |

Subject: squeaky brakes Question: hi again wiz my problem with the squeaky brakes has retured i did remove the pads and roughen them up!!! with a file... it cured the prob for a day of two.. but they started squeaking again... could i have the wrong pads? i have the 285 big discs with ferodo standard pads any ideas my wiz cheers john Answer: Pads usually squeak when there is something stuck in the face of the pad or they are too hard and glaze up. I would suggest a softer pad, maybe even genuine Renault, or try mintex standard type pads. |

Subject: heat Question: hi wiz ,another question for u old and wise one! when driving my temp guage needle sits just under the second notch, and yet when i sit in traffic etc.the needle quickly rises to the third notch and slightly over, before the fan cuts in, and even with the fan running it still holds at the third notch, i know ph 1s run hotter ,but not that hot??? its got a new copper core rad + thermast in the rad and the water pump hose, any ideas what might cause this!and how i can make it sit cooler in traffic, cheers wiz , Answer: I take it you mean the notch just over half way on the gauge. I have been told that some cars run nearer this line with a so called low temp switch in a copper cored rad as the copper disperses the heat around the switch and it takes longer to cut in than a standard one. If you are really bothered about this then fit a manual overide switch in the dash to turn the fan on when you are in traffic. |

Subject: Driveshaft Question: Hi, The rhs driveshaft has come apart at the c.v joint is this normal as it has done it before? I am about to change it off another GT TURBO. Shall i buy new roll pins to replace at the gearbox side? Also do i have to lubricate anything as i am to replace the whole shaft? i.e the tyre side. Can u give me any tips as i am hopefully to start this t'morrow!! Lastly the car has not been driven for about a month, apart from charge the battery do i have to do any thing different to start it as i don't want to damage the TURBO! Thanks in advance. Answer: The shaft should not come apart so i suggest it is not a turbo shaft. Most new driveshafts come with the pins but if yours hasn't then i would buy some. Just lubricate anything you take apart that moves with copperslip or similar. I would say to take the king lead off and turn the engine over on the starter until the oil pressure light goes out before refitting the kinglead and starting properly to ensure the turbo is lubricated. |

Subject: Still no joy :( Question: Hey Wiz, I took apart my engine a couple of weeks ago cos I thought the liner seals were leaking. I replaced them all and put it back together. I took it out for a spin that night and I was still losing water into the oil. The rocker cover was quickly coated in mayonaise but its not the headgasket as I've replaced it twice, thinking that it was the problem, but both times its been fine. I think its either the head or the radiator. How likely is it to be the radiator leaking water into the oil? I think its the head, but dont want to take it all apart again only to find out its not the head. I am at the end of my tether and am selling the car as soon as its fixed. Cheers, Wadey Answer: Try removing the rad and filling it with water after flushing out. If it is leaking into the oil cooler you should be able to see it. |

Subject: RUNNING ROUGH!!!! Question: Hi, Im a new member and i just want to say how great i think this site is!! i have a H reg R5 and its running like a sack of S**T basically!!!! When its ticking over it pops and wont run smooth, the engine doesnt sound to bad its coming from the exhaust, i lost the air screw out the carb which i replaced but its still not running right! the boost gauge goes about half way and the turbo whistles realy load does this mean its on its way out?? just wondering if you had any ideas you will have to excuse me if i sound really thick but im new to this!!! Cheers x Answer: Do you have a good seal around the mixture screw? This could effect the running as could a leak from the carb top seal or some of the pipework around the carb. Check all this and get back to me if you don't find the fault. |
