Subject: timing sensor

Question:
is the gt tuning ajustable timimg sensor better than say 4 instance a bb tuning 1 which has 6 degrees of advance,if so performance wise wot will it do??

Answer:
Adjustable timing sensors are good for optimising timing on modified engines but the 6 degrees or advance will give extra torque low down.

Subject: ***TUNING***

Question:
Hi there matey just a quickie over winter i want to mod the engine on my 5 but before i start modding the car i want to upgrade all that needs doing but what is most important? head gasket ? hoses ? swirl pots? at the mo i just have full exhaust air filter and 13 psi 151 bhp (flywheel i presume) when it was last dyno'd i just dont want things splitting cracking blowing etc cheers dude

Answer:
I would remove and check all pipes etc in the cooling system and replace all those that are less than perfect. This includes the radiator and thermostat. Next fit an uprated head gasket and bolts etc for reliability before starting the mods.

Subject: Petrol smell

Question:
I am getting a really strong petrol smell coming through the engine bay into the car. The smell is worse when the car is in slow traffic (20mph) and after it has stopped. Ive replaced some broken hoses but still the smell is there???

Answer:
It could be a leak in a pipe or the carb may be flooding but this is less likely.
Are you sure it is coming from the engine bay? It could be a leak at the tank that you can smell due to the plastic bung under the rear seats.

Subject: turbo talk

Question:
hi wiz i'v just got off the phone from turbo technics, they've told me if you increase the amount of intake ie bigger turbo and then increase the amount able to flow you'll have decreased lag.
what do ya think old wise one?

Answer:
You are allways better off with increased flow unless it it reducing exhaust backpressure then it is bad.

Subject: Dump Valve

Question:
hi wiz, further to your reply im just writing to tell you that the diaghram is fine in my dump valve so could there be another problem which would answer the question of why theres no tssssssh?????

Answer:
It must be down to the ignition module to carb pipe then, split maybe?

Subject: Boost gauge

Question:
For no apparent reason my standard booster gauge has stopped working, any ideas what it might be? thanks.

Answer:
Sometimes the pipe that runs from the carb top to the gauge comes off right near the bulkhead grommet.

Subject: Loss of battery power

Question:
after a couple of days the charge from the battery runs out. The light comes on when braking, indicating and using anything electrical. When this happens, i stop the car, restart it and 9 times out of ten the light stays off and the battery gets charged. This problem is happening more often than not and is leaving me to push start the car on a regular basis.
The light sometimes comes on when i get higher up the revs.

Answer:
If the alternator belt is tight and in good condition then i would suspect the wiring and connectors to the alternator before the alt itself.

Subject: Anti perc fan

Question:
Although the engine is not that hot, the fan cuts in while driving and stays on almost constantly. Then when the car is off, the fan continues to run for about 40 minutes. This is draining power from the battery. I have changed the fan and the sensor but the problem still occurs

Answer:
I would say you have a wiring problem, maybe a high resistance in a joint or wire.

Subject: iN CAR BOOST CONTROL

Question:
I HAVE RECENTLY BEEN GIVEN AN IN CAR BOOST CONTROL FROM A CRASHED RENAULT. THE ONLY PROBLEM IS THAT THE PERSON THAT TOOK IT OUT HAS CUT THE HOSES AT THE BASE OF THE UNIT IN THE DASH BOARD. IS IT NOW USELESS OR ARE THERE MORE COMPONENTS I HAVE TO BUY. ALSO IS IT POSSIBLE TO FIT THIS DIY? IF SO. HOW?

Answer:
There are two ways to fit the valve.

1) Use it in conjunction with a max boost limiter and plumb it into a single line from this.

or

2) Cut the front most actuator pipe and extend it into the car through the valve and back out again.
This can cause extra lag due to pipe lengths.

Subject: Sounds like a diesel

Question:
Wiz
My 5 sounds like a diesel when you first start it from cold and it trys to stall as if the engine is flooding.
The noise is similar to a pinking noise although its a louder ticking, it also carries on as you accelerate untill you reach about 3000 rpm, and you cant hear it anymore. The performance of the car seems unchanged.
I was hoping you could suggest some possible causes and solutions.

Cheers.

Answer:
Check the exhaust manifold gasket and nuts as it could well be these.

Subject: Tracking

Question:
Wiz, i have had problems with my tyres wearing on the inner side.Would you be able to tell me what would be the most appropriate tracking setting for my car.I have 16inch wheels and its lowered 35mm.Also can gtturbos run on LRP as im running on super at the mo and there isnt many places that sell it around my way.cheers wiz.

Answer:
Standard tracking is fine it is the camber wearing your tyres. Consider fitting camber correctors, adjustable top mounts or elongating the strut mounting holes to reduce the camber to standard again.

I have heard bad rumours about LRP and turbos but have no proof.
I would stick to super or normal plus octain booster.

Subject: Fan problems

Question:
Yo Wiz,

A few questions (sorry!)

Car ran its battery flat the other day. The radiator cooling fan simply will not deactivate normally, so I'm forced to take the fuse out when its parked at the mo to stop it turning- a right pain in the a***! I don't have any manual fan switches or anything so I'm a bit confused. Any ideas?

My doors have dropped on their hinges and as the car is going into a body shop soon I want to get it sorted. Any ideas as to the best way of getting them fixed?

Finally, I had my manifold gasket changed by a local mechanic just 500 miles ago as it was blowing. Its now gone again...very annoying. Is there any reason it might have gone again so soon or does it come down to poor workmanship? Don't want to go in guns blazing without knowing the facts!

Cheers for your time and sorry to have so many questions.

Tom

Answer:
I would say your fan switch is knackered to be on all the time.

Jack the doors up to ""adjust"" the hinges if you don't want to renew them.

Manifold nuts must be metal lock nuts as anything else will work loose and may blow .

Subject: Installing new starter

Question:
Mr. Wizard,

I have had to get my starter motor exchanged as my last one broke! The old one came out, eventually. BUT I seem to have lost (or not had) the starter motor guide pin thing that old Mr. Haynes goes on about.

Do I need this to get the new one in okay, or can I face up the starter to the bolt holes and then put all three bolts in at the same time?

I have heard that putting a new starter in can wreck my timing. Again, Mr. Haynes is a bit thin on the ground here. I didn't fit the last one, but am putting this one in (and after taking the bust one out, it can't be *that* hard).

Any advice from experience would be great!

Cheers,

Jon.

Answer:
The starter has nothing to do with timing so it is fine.
The guide dowel is good but not essensial

Subject: HOW BIG

Question:
Hi Wiz Im debating at the mo' whether to put on 17inch alloys 205 40 or 16inch 195 40 whould it make a difference to the speed with 17s and what would you recomend for my 5 Turbo

Answer:
17's are cheaper for tyres usually and are better for looks.
Both may effect the steering and handling due to there larger rolling radius.

Subject: Fitting a turbo

Question:
i was wondering if i cud fit a turbo to a 1.4 gtl as iv it done up..i cud run it on low boost etc...can it b done and cud i do it..whats all needed..i got a turbo, intercooler etc.

Answer:
You would need to lower the compression ratio using turbo pistons, run the turbo head, etc etc etc.

It will be easier to fit a turbo engine complete.

Subject: should be faster 2

Question:
I have just modifyed my GT Turbo and expected a massive change, but have not noticed any.
Modifications i have done are below.

Aluminium intercooler,
Stage two hybrid turbo,
Performance exhaust,
Baileys dump value,

The car seems to be working ok and boosting ok, but just like standard. Should i notice a big change?

Answer:
If the boost is the same as before then you will have about the same power as before!

Subject: Flush

Question:
Wiz,
I'm about to change the oil to mobil 1 motorsport, and was wondering the best method for flushing, or whether a flush can be used, the car has done 36000 miles and has had an oil change every 1000 miles since new.
Just want it to be nice and clean!

Answer:
Use a cheepo oil in the engine for about 1/2 an hour to loosen any crud and then drain.
DO NOT use an engine flush as this can damage the turbo.

Subject: Starting

Question:
my 5 turbo recently went into the garage cos it wasnt starting, a new starter motor was fitted, the wiring to the alternator was redone as this was badly done previously and the ht leads were put back on correctly (their job was just to get it to start and not to run properly).
now, i went to pick it up and it started eventually but when i drove away and stopped at a yellow line it just cut out. i re-started it eventually with my foot to the floor on the accelerator and got it going again. it was idling fine and reving fine when i put my foot down but when i went to drive off it stalled again. i got it re-started, same scenario but then another yellow line came up and it cut out again, this time it starts when i put my foot to the floor but it only keeps extremely low revs and as soon as i take my foot off the accelerator it dies again. i kept my foot on it for a while in case it cleared but it didnt.
any help would be appreciated wiz

Answer:
I would check that your idle screw is still there and if it is then check for a blocked carb jet/fuel pipe.

Subject: Unleaded Fuel

Question:
Hi Wiz,
I have a R5GTT phase II on a 'J' Plate
date of Registration 02 Aug 91
I have used unleaded fuel since I bought it 20 April 1998 It has been really reliable except for a broken hand brake cable which I replaced and it was a pig of a job.
Can you tell me if Renault converted this model to unleaded fuel?
The only clue I have is that the filler cap is colour coded green if that means anything. I put 4 star in it prior to the change over to LRP and it run shite,

Your thoughts oh wise one!

Answer:
Putting 4 star into your car should be good not bad even if it has been converted to unleaded. A green cap usually means unleaded.

Subject: stage 3 T25

Question:
hi wiz,i've just put on a S3 t25 and i think i've lost power.
the turbo's running about 14psi but is capable of 30psi.
it comes in around 3000rpm but when i floor it at 3000rpm it doesn't seem to spool up as quick as the std turbo.
the std turbo was running 10psi.
i've not re-jetted the carb as i have a group A carb to go,once this is done i'll put it on a rolling road and get it jetted.
is this lag and can it be cured by turning the boost up or am i being really vague and you have no clue what i'm on about?

Answer:
It sounds to me like your turbo is not suited to your engine spec.
You are getting terrible lag due to i expect too large a turbine wheel. Jetting and setup may help as would a manifold like K-Tecs.

Subject: Offsets

Question:
Wiz,
Just another question about offsets, i know the correct offset is 35mm for 5s, but would the car be ok if i slapped on some 16s with a 37mm offset. Is there anything i should do to put these on or any problems they might cause.
Nice one.

Answer:
As long as the tyres don't rub anywhere then that 2mm won't make a massive difference.

Subject: torsion bar lowering

Question:
Hi, i've had my five about a year now and i've lowered it about 10 times now(changing wheel size). i'm runing 17's at the moment at have lowered the front 60mm and the back about 50. i lowered the rear today about 20mm, but when i took the car off the jacks it is exactly the same height!!! does this mean iv'e reached the lowest i can go with standard shocks? it used to be lower when i had 15's though! cheers if you can solve this problem.

Answer:
15's will be lower as they have a smaller rolling radius than 17's.
It could be that your shocks are bottomed out but you should be running shortened (Clio?) shocks with the car this low.

Subject: PULLING

Question:
Wiz,

Sometimes when driving on noraml roads at slow speed I have noticed my car pulls to one side quite a bit. Do u think this could just be down to the fact that Im running 17"" wheels and they're following the track of the road or could it be something more sinister,

Cheers fella,
Semra

Answer:
It could be ""Tram lining"" or it could be worn suspension or steering componants.

Subject: TORSION BAR

Question:
GOT SOME 15"" WHEELS ON MY 5 TURBO WANT TO LOWER IT THE REAR END, GOT ONE BAR OUT BUT THE OTHER SIDE WILL NOT COME OUT TRIED EVERY THINK, WD40,LARGE HAMMER STILL WONT F**KING COME OUT ANY HELP PLEASE(WOULD DIFFERENT SHOCKS MAKE IT LOWER)

Answer:
Try getting a smaller bar to line up with the stuck one and use a sledge hammer to free it!
Shorter shocks will allow it to go lower not actually lower it.
