Subject: Leaky sump Question: Hello Wiz my man, can you advise me what to do about my leaking sump, when I bought my Phase II it had a dent in the sump right next to the sump plug, I know that I need a new sump, where is the best place to buy one. I have managed for nearly 4 years using thread seal, but now it drips. it's doing mi head in! cheers, Jim. Answer: You can get them new from Renault for a small mortgage but you could try GSF for a cheaper option or go second hand and get one from an old engine. |

Subject: 200bhp Question: How? I have a mate that has got a mk2 xr2 with a rs turbo lump running at 140-160bhp and it is quick as fu@k. I simply want to beat his ass. Please give some advise as to getting the magic number as my car is standard at the moment. Thanks Answer: I would say you need about 20+ psi on an engine fitted with uprated intercooler, fuel system, exhaust, inlet and probably head and cam. A reliable engine consisting of a lightened and balanced bottom end and uprated clutch. |

Subject: Cooling fan circuit Question: Hi wizard Ive got a problem with the cooling fan circuit. Ive tested the fan with a direct feed - works ok - replaced the thermostat switch. And am now looking at the relay/wires. Would I be right in assuming the circuit is working correctly if I connect the 2 thermostat switch wires and the fan comes on - as when i do this the fan does not come on and so think it could be a problem with the relay. Cheers for any help in advance Answer: Yes the thoery is correct and the relays go for a past time! |

Subject: dashboard again Question: ok, heres a interesting question, when fitting a new speedo, i obviously have to make the mileage right on the current, speedo, so is it clocking, when i fiddle with the mileage reading, i only ask as if i ever come to sell the car, i wouldn't want to make it look dodgy, it has a full history upkept by all owners, and i would right in that the dash was changed, do i need photos of old clock next to new one to prove this come tell me what you think Answer: I would just put a signed paper in the docs to say when the speedo was renewed and maybe even keep the old clocks. |

Subject: steam from engine Question: hi wiz, im getting a burning oil smell from under the bonnet, as well as steam which seaps out from the rocker cover, and also when i take the oil cap off. its not the gasket coz the car boots ok and there isnt any mayonaise under the oil cap. The top radiator hose is boiling hot whereas the rest are cold, and theres no pressure in the header tank thats cold too, have i gotta blocked radiator or a faulty water pump?? help!!! Answer: It could be the impellor has seperated from the water pump or the thermostat may be faulty. Try removing the stat, testing it and check the pump before refitting. |

Subject: Vacuum spring clips Question: Hi wiz, do you know if there's a special tool available to unclip and reclip the standard spring clips on the vacuum hoses to the actuator etc. I want to keep the engine bay looking factory fresh, so don't want to replace them with motorfactor jubilee clips! I've tried all the tool manufacturers and they don't seem to do anything, are they renault specific? And if so is a tool available? Answer: I have never heard of a tool for this purpose as i think they are just pressure fitted. I expect Renault will sell you the clips, at a price of course! |

Subject: Main Fan not Working Question: Hi Wiz, My fan stopped working last night so obviously my car was getting hot in traffic, from what I can gather I need to do the following: 1/ Touch the two wires together that go into the switch on the rad. 2/ If the fan comes on then the switch is screwed. 3/ If it does not then I need a new relay. And just another quickie, if I need to replace the switch then I would buy a low temp one - would I need to buy a low temp thermostat as well? Cheers in advance Andy Answer: You don't need to buy the stat but it isnt a bad idea. |

Subject: Strange noise Question: wiz, After taking the car for a spin the other day i've noticed a 'Squeeling' noise comming from the engine. i've checked the drive belt and that seems fine, any ideas of what it could be. The noise only seems to be there when accelerating and it can't be heard if the engines just being revved at stand still. Thanks, Answer: It could be the drive belt slipping under load or something maybe rubbing as the engine moves. |

Subject: DRIVESHAFT Question: Hi Wizard of wonder!! I have a reacurring problem... I have previously changed a RHS driveshaft as it came out of the wheel and was hanging off... lucky i was on my drive... got it fixed with 1 off another car, about 6 months downs the line it has popped out again .... pls help i want 2 do it myself what do i do basics is it easy as i am mechanically minded... and why do u think it came out just like that and if i was on the MOTORWAY!!!!! ups..... it has 3 spanners in the haynes manual can u advise plssssssssssssssssAnswer: Was the new shaft from a gtturbo? It could be that either the drive shaft or hub are wrong but the large nut on the hub end of the drive shaft should stop it coming out so i assume you mean the CV joint has come apart. To replace it you must first undo the large driveshaft nut on the outside of the hub. Next remove the roll pins that hold the inner section of the drive shaft to the gearbox shaft. Remove the ball joints holding the hub in place and remove the shaft. |

Subject: blue smoke? Question: hi wiz i wonder if u can shed some light on this problem what it is my m8 has got a phase2 and his car started to smoke every now and again so eventually we diagosed it as the turbo,we changed the turbo + the intercooler, for new items, the problem is that the car still smokes quite heavy only now and again and only when idling, the oil gets changed regular+has the right amount in,last nite we took the intercooler bak out and it was full of oil also were the boost pipes and carb top,the car has done plenty of miles since the turbo change wot else could b the problem?valve stem oil seals, oil control rings, many thanks jay ![]() Answer: The two common faults are turbo seals and valve stem oil seals. Try removing the breather pipe to the ""U"" bend before the turbo and fit a catch tank. (old coke bottle?) This will tell you if it is turbo seals or coming from the engine. |

Subject: Juddering Part 2 Question: Wiz, i have noticed that this juddering only happens when i have washed my car and take it for a run, or it is raining, i dont think its fuel starvation, will replace my pump and carb jets though, anything else it could be, also, i have received a catalogue from Racetech, they used to be a contact on this website then got taken off, just wanted to know why, and also they sell a tomcat turbo for £600 and it is capable of 35psi, this seems quite cheap, are they a reliable company, they do huge club owner discounts, and the turbo sells elsewhere for £1100, is this a dodgy place and are they just cheap quality. Cheers Answer: Sounds like some of your electrics are getting wet and probably earthing out due to the water. Never used Racetech but i think you can get a better suited turbo than the tomcat one for the same money. |

Subject: OIL PRESSURE Question: I HAVE MY ENGINE RE BUILT 6 MONTHS AGO. EVERY NOW AND THEN I GET OIL LEAKING FROM THE OIL BREATHER WHICH I HAVE FITTED AND IT EVEN THROWS THE DIPSTICK UP AND LOSES OIL THROUGH THERE ALSO. SHOULD THERE BE THIS MUCH PRESSURE OR ARE THE RINGS PLAYING UP AS SOME PEOPLE HAVE SAID. Answer: I would expect that your rings are either faulty or just not bedded in properly for the boost you are running. Try getting a compression test to check. |

Subject: wabbly springs. Question: Dear Mr Wiz, Could you help me out please, My steering has become quite heavy and makes a clunking noise when I change the direction of steering. I have taken the road wheels off and checked the track rod ends (OK) but when I turn the steering wheel the upper part of the whole spring / shock absorber seems to move at the top of the strut assembly. What could this be. Mad Andy. Answer: Sounds like the strut top bearings have gone. |

Subject: Rough Running Question: Hi Having a serious problem just rebuilt the engine on my E plate 5 (new rings, BB tuning headgasket and rebuilt turbo). I bought the car smoking with an idiling problem (won't do it) just presumed other work would sort it. So the problem i'm having is wont idle and oil pressure around 1 bar plus a ringing noise (not engine related) Answer: I would check that the idling screw on the side of the carb is not damaged and that the idle jet (one behind a large brass screw on the side of the carb) is not blocked. Oil pressure could have been due to worn bearings or pump and that is probably what killed the turbo. |

Subject: rev happy Question: what sort of rev's are the r5 safe to my friend rev's his to 7000 all the time with no problems. so whats safe. Answer: Most cars with a standard cam run out of power at about 6000 rpm so it is not worth revving it higher but the bottom end or the GT is nearly bullet proof if good oil is used. I would say 7000 should be ok (ish) |

Subject: Please not the turbo!!! Question: I took my boost hoses off and discovered oil in the i/c and i/c to carb hoses. There didn't seem to be much in the turbo to i/c hose. Any ideas what this could be? Answer: Try cleaning the pipes, going for a run and rechecking them. Also remove the breather pipe from the turbo inlet and fit it to a catch tank to rule out oil from the engine. |

Subject: Tappet Setup Question: Oh Wizard of Turbo Knowledge. When i had my head off when i blew my last head gasket i didnt have a set of gauges to hand so i set the tappits so they had a tiny amount of play, today i got hold of a new set of gauges and thought itd be a good idea to set them up properly i went through the rule of 9 twice i had to slack each adjuster off quite a bit. but it only made the tappits really loud i was using 025 for exhaust and 020 for inlet i was using the gauge between the top of the valve and the tappet. i dont think i have a hot cam. Whats going on? Answer: You should set them to 8 thou inlet and 10 thou exhaust. I am guessing you are using imperial and not that new fangled metric for measurements. |

Subject: fuel pump relay Question: where is it, what colour is and how many prongs has it got on,a few short jabs under the dashbored soon sorts it out getting annoying now Answer: you gotta remove the panel surrounding the fusebox. once you've done that, to the right of the fuses, there are several relays. attached to the upper right hand corner of these 4 relays is a large grey and black relay, this is the fuel pump relay, it has 6 connections. Replace it if necessary. |
