Subject: Pinking Question: Hi, could you explain what causes pinking and what it is. Thanks Answer: Pinking is premature detonation of the fuel/air mixture. This can be down to poor or low fuel octain rating (the GTT should run on 97ron), too much ignition advance, a large buildup of carbon in the combustion chamber, too high a compression ratio or fuel mixture is too lean. |

Subject: Moving the header tank Question: I am thinking of moving my header tank to where my anti perc fan used to be . Apart from having slightly less coolant (i.e. the volume of the 2 bottom pipes that will be shortened) can anyone think of reasons good or bad for doing this? Ta! Answer: The scuttle tray would be better as it is higher to prevent airlocks. You can run the pipework through the wing too if you fit it here. |

Subject: fuel pump? Question: Hi Wizard! I have an odd problem every now and then my car just cuts out and won't start. After leaving a bit it starts again! When I checked it there was a spark going to the plugs and they are new plugs so replaced the fuel pump but that makes no difference. I read some where it could be a faulty relay near the fuse box but I cant find which 1 it is. Now when the car cuts out I found that a few taps on the fuse box and the car starts right away! Help please 1 very sick 5! Answer: It is either in the bottom corner of the fusebox or additionally on the rear of the box on its own. |

Subject: Push Rods Question: Hi, I have heard that in a GTT using a Piper 285 cam, when it comes to setting the valve clearances, some of the tappet nuts are only hanging on by a few threads. Is this true, if so is it a problem? Have they ever been known to come off? I have also heard that using Renault 5 Gordini push rods this problem can be solved. Have you ever heard of this and is it true? Do they cause any other problems? Thanks Answer: If the adjusters are done up tight then they are fine. You could try other pushrods but you shouldn't need to. |

Subject: Roughly how much? Question: Hi Wiz. I've got the cooling sorted etc and at 14psi, shows as 140bhp. Is that about right? What sort of power/difference with a group a carb, headgasket (for reliability), and a stage 3 turbo. I'd just like a rough idea if you could hazard a guess. Cheers Answer: Power is simplified to how much boost you run. (as long as cooling and fuelling are adjusted to suit.) You may get a couple of bhp from the carb and thats it. The bigger turbo will run the same boost but move more air so you pick up a couple here too as long as there is enough fuel. |

Subject: rev counter keeps going Question: ive just fitted my new revlimiter/full throttle shift. when i floor it the limiter kicks (about 5500 rpm), but the needle keeps travelling past this although the engine isnt going any faster. Your input to this strange occurance will be much appreciated, cheers Answer: If the engine speed is not increasing then i would say it is just a glitch in the sensors signal. |

Subject: Back seat head rests Question: How do I fit head rests to my back seat? Is there a proper way of fitting them or are there just holes made in the top of the seat and the head rest just placed in these holes? Answer: You could fit them into just a hole in the seat but it would not be very secure unless you strip the seats and fit the proper runners from the front seats to hold the headrest. Alternatively you could fit the seats with metal brackets to hold the headrest against the rear of the seat which will be easier and very cheap/free. |

Subject: Standard Boost Question: Hi i was wondering if you can tell me what the standard boost should be reading (P.S.I.) on a gauge that is conected to the pipe comming from the bottom of the carb to E.C.U. And what safe pressure can i increase it to on a new standard turbo, taking the reading from this point. Cheers Answer: I have never measured a standard turbo from below the carb but it would be somewhere around 5-8 psi i would say as it is about 7-9 above the carb. You could go to 14psi but i would suggest a rolling road setup to check and adjust jetting to suit. |

Subject: still got excessive rear body roll Question: Hello, I have checked tyre pressures, loose bolts/ parts etc. and nothing appears to be knackered. Can't move the axle where it mounts to the chassis but would it be noticeable wear if the bushes were that worn? Is there anything else that you know of which could be causing this problem, apart from shocks, because they are only 10 months old? Thanx Answer: The torsion bars may have become soft over the years, this will deffo cause the symptoms you discribe. |

Subject: juddering.......................... Question: Hello wiz, right i warm my car up for ten mins, give it a run, without using the turbo, then as soon as i start to floor it it judders and doesnt suck any air in, it did this for about 5 mins of me testing it, it just kept juddering and splutting, like there was enormous back pressure, but after a couple more mins of hitting the throttle on and off, it was fine, wound up a treat, turned up the boost to 14psi, and it flew, what could cause this to happen, its done it twice in the last month, could it be oil starvation, and how can i solve this, cheers Answer: It could be a fuel pump/relay problem or just a blocked carb jet or similar. |

Subject: over heating Question: my engine overheats in traffic, apart from fitting cooler for radiator, fitting alloy intercooler, fitting bigger radiator, venting the bonnet and turning the fan on to hot into the car can u help? Answer: I take it you have done these things as these symptoms usually mean a blocked radiator or a non operating fan. Try fitting a ""Chicken switch"" to the fan to get it to stay on all the time in traffic to help. |

Subject: spring rattle? Question: Dear Wizard, Now that I have resolved the problem with the wife's engine etc, it's time to turn my attention back to my own car! Just after Xmas I fitted adj. Konis all round + lowering springs(35mm) to the front.I adjusted the torsion bar and fitted 15 inch wheels.Top of skirt i.e first seam to ground height at the front is 20cm at rear is 21cm.Trouble is, I'm experiencing a rattle on all but the smoothest of roads. The suspension was tight prior to this and the bearings at the shock tops seemed o.k.Handling seems o.k. as well but this front spring rattle is annnoying .Whats the problem? Regards Steve Sheldon. Answer: It could be the springs not seated properly or a worn componant. Try jacking the car up and checking to see if the springs move. |

Subject: 16 inches! Question: hi wiz just replaced my clio 16v wheels fitted with 195/45/15 eagle f1s for some megane 16 ive fitted 195/45/16s but i seem to have lost a bit of traction and handling, wot could be the prob?r the megane wheel the wrong offset? please help! Subject: imbalance? Question: hi wiz another prob, when hard braking my car tends to skip out and twitch at the back end,it has always had this problem but since buying it ive replaced the shockers, rear discs+bearings, rear hoses+compensator what could be the problem? Answer: I expect the compensator needs adjusting to reduce the braking effort going to the rear. Try taking the car to a rolling road brake tester and get the rear brake balance set to about 10-30% and try it on a closed road for safety purposes. |

Subject: Side Exit Exhaust Mountings Question: Heyah, just a quick question, I can see where the rubber exhaust mount should link on the support near the tail-pipe of my PowerFlow side exit exhaust, but not sure where to loop the other mount since there is a support on the right-angle part towards the back after the silencer box. Hope you can help, Jaymee! Answer: I think you need to get the car up on a ramp and just have a good look as to where to fit the mount as a powerflow exhaust can be different to anything else. |

Subject: suspension Question: wiz,i have tried to lowerer the back of my car and the torsion bar is totally seized.what your best way of doing it,is it possible to transfer a non turbo[i'e 1.4 prima]bar to the turbo or will the disks not fit.also i'm about to purchase some new front suspension,i.ve had problems with tyres wearing on the inner side because of excess camber, what kit would u think best, not that keen on adjustables, what do you think of the ktr/jr full kit or do bilstein do shocks for the r5 .thanks loads wiz Answer: The KTR/JR kit has had good reports from friends who have it fitted. If you are going to change the rear suspension then replace it with another GT one. If loads of releasing oil, a large hammer and heat don't budge the torsion bar then nothing will! |

Subject: Wont Start Question: This may be a long question(s) but basically i have recently purchased a renault 5 turbo and everything used to be fine but now, when i try and start it, theres just not enough power to turn the engine over, at first i suspected the battery but i have since recharged it to full power but it still wont start. i have come to the conclusion that it must be the starter motor cos its turning over but very very slowly until after two or three attempts it wont even turn at all. its been three weeks so far and ive been forced into using a mk2 ford fiesta 1.1 for transport, please help Mr Wiz Answer: I would do a double check by trying another battery before going for the starter motor. It could also be a poor connection to the starter causing a larger current drain. |
