Subject: How 2 Set Boost Limit (2)

Question:
What sort of restrictors are available? Are they bleed valves?
How can a bleed valve be used to set boost limit?
Is it simply plumbed in between the carb top and front actuator pipe and the amount of air that is bled off sets the max limit?
Is a spider valve two bleed valves in one?
Thanks

Answer:
Restrictors range from a piece of metal with a set sized hole in it to the spider valve.
3 way bleed valves can be used under the bonnet with an extra 2 way in the car. The 3 way sets the max bleed and the 2 way sets the bleed between nothing and the preset max.
The spider valve is like a 3 way bleed valve but also can be set to lower boost below the normal standard for economy.

Subject: The shakes

Question:
Hi,
my car has been fine up untill today. When I start it it shakes like its stalling and driving it it makes a noise like a steam train. It also has no power now when i put my foot down (skoda syndrome). My m8 recons its the spark plug but I'd rather hear from you.
Thanks

Answer:
It could be a plug or lead.
It could also be down to a manifold leak so check this after the plugs and leads.

Subject: P***** off

Question:
Hi wiz,
where shall i start. When driving my 5 for a short while no prob, when drove for a long while - 2nd-3rd crunches + vice versa ,1st starts to crunch, and pulls off when clutch to floor.Ive checked the clutch tension on the pedal and its ratcheted right up ,the clutch also slips a bit when really floored. Is there a way to check the cable as when i bought the car there was a nut between the fork and the end peice.Thanx hope you can understand

Answer:
Sounds like either the cable is stretched or the clutch is nearly worn out.
Put another nut in the cable and see if it gets better.

Subject: Ignition Light part 2

Question:
Hi Wizz,

I asked you about a week ago for some advice on my alternator. Since then it has been running fine.

Over the last two days the ignition light has not been appearing when I turn the ignition on! Slowly it has been harder and harder to start. Until tonight when it just would not start. Again no ignition light and it doesn't even turn and the starter motor does not even click or anything. I have not had a chance to look at it yet but is there anything that you can suggest that I look at first.

Cheers

Chris.

Answer:
Sounds like the exciter circuit has failed and the alternator has not been charging.

Subject: in car boost control

Question:
i have recently bought a gt turbo and it came with a gt tuning in car boost adjustor, however the muppet who had it before disconnected it and now only one pipe goes to the carb area and the other seems to be driping oil into the engine as it is not connected to anything could you please tell me where they should both go

Answer:
There should be a ""T"" piece in the front actuator to carb pipe which leads into the car to the boost adjuster. Another pipe should run back into the engine bay to expel the bled off air.

Subject: Hot air feed ...

Question:
Hi Wiz,

The K&N instructions tell you to take the hot air feed and attach it to the side of the airbox. Mine is so tatty can i just take it of the Turbo ? Is that going to cause damage ?

Thanks

Answer:
I would say to bin the hot air feed and add an extra cold air feed instead. There is enough heat in the GT engine bay as it is!

Subject: price of rear brakes!

Question:
I need new brakes on the rear of my raider, but was horrified to be told that it will cost £306.61,because i need a wheel bearing kit aswell as discs and pads.who, where or what could help to get this price down, coz that is a bit much.cheers.

Answer:
I think you should speak to K-Tec or another tuner as they do the lot as a kit for around £200 or less.

Subject: Breather System

Question:
Hi Wizz, i recently fitted a JR mini breather filter (from K-tec) by blocking the hole in the telephone hose and bringing a pipe upto the filter which sits next the carb top. However now i come to think about it doesn’t the breather system operate using the suction of the turbo to pull the gases around. If so by removing the feed pipe to the turbo/air filter pipe am i limiting the efficiency of the system? Would a better solution be to 'T' in the filter and still use the connection to the telephone, thus using the filter as a sort of 'clean air vent' and still using the suction of the turbo. I'm probably talking poo cos none of the tuners have taken this approach, your opinion will be welcomed. Jon0

Answer:
Removing this pipe removes the chance of oil getting into the inlet system and coming out the exhaust as smoke. It is better for the oil to be returned to the sump via the seperator.

Subject: holding back

Question:
Wizard, I have a problem where the car under hard acceleration holds back, the turbo is boosting but it is not going as well as it should. This normally only happens in third gear upwards. I have ajustable boost and it does it with standard but more with the ajuster unwound. I have just got this done and it has has a new wiring loom, new plugs, leads, rotor arm and ht cap what else can i try as it is getting expensive. ( it is also burning more fuel) Many Thanks

Answer:
I would say it was a fuelling problem, maybe even a knackered fuel pump.

I expect it is a backup of pressure or just the usual dodgy sender/gauge!

Subject: White smoke??

Question:
I have just done a full engine rebuild, and my car was fine for a day or so, but now there is a lot of white smoke coming out of the exhaust and it is losing loads of water.

This is however not on start up but a minute or so after. What have i done wrong or is it a head gasket and how do i check. Sorry for the large amount of text but your help is very much needed.

cheers

matt.

Answer:
Sounds like either a head gasket or liner problem.
Did you torque the head down correctly? Was it skimmed prior to refitting?

Subject: Knock Knock

Question:
Oh Masterful Wiz

Even though ""Gordie"" asked u this question not so long ago, I feel I have to ask u again.
If I'm driving along and I take a left turn whilst accelerating a loud knocking noise will occur and my steering wheel will sometimes vibrate (dependant on the corner). I've had new Koni's all round a couple months back and just had a new driveshaft & bearing done at great expense, and it's still knocking : (
It's really beginning to frustrate me coz it's such an annoying thing.
What would u do?

Ta!

Answer:
Check all the bushes and balljoints for play.

Subject: NOS fuel pressure.

Question:
ihave been told a NOS kit for the 5 has not got an extra fuel pump and the fuel is taken from a T to the standard feul line. this pressure is only just above boost pressure unlike an injection system that would be 2 or 3bar above boost.
is the pressure on the 5 enough to give the NOS system the fuel it needs
for a good spray pattern.

Answer:
You are best off speaking to the NOS system manufacturer as i am a turbo wizard and not the wizard of nos! He is found at High power nitrous's website!

Subject: Ignition Light update!

Question:
Hi wizz,

I managed to have a look at the motor this evening.

The battery has been on charge for the last couple of days. Putting a meter across it, it has 12.4v. Turned the ignition on, still no light. She did start first time though. Put the meter across the battery whilst she was ideling and it was reading 12.2v! I took her out for a run and checked things when I got back. put a meter across the battery whilst she was ideling and it was only reading 11.94v. Then the main fan cut in and the reading started to go down whilst I had the meter across the battery. When it turned off it went up slightly but not a lot. I checked that earth cable and it was fine. There is a good earth on the body of the alternator too. Am I right in saying that the two wires going into the regulator have something to do with the ignition light cos it has a good positive but the earth is 0.3v!

Have they given me a duff alternator? Is the rating of the alternator 60A or is it supposed to be higher?

Wizz I need your help cos I am well stuck!!

Cheers

Chris.

Answer:
Alternator ratings vary from 45 amps upwards. The wires should have 12v min from the battery. This will mean the alternator is not charging but it may just be a dodgy wire to the alt that is doing it.

Subject: Boost Gauge Vacuum Reading?

Question:
A boost gauge can be plumbed in below the throttle, this will allow a vacuum reading. Why would you want this?

To see engine condition/faults.

Subject: Renault Laguna starter motor

Question:
Hi Wiz,
Just been lookin through the members car bit and i saw that somebody has fitted a Renault Laguna starter motor.Do they go straight on and what do you gain from doing this?

Answer:
The Laguna motor is a higher cranking capacity than the GTT and i believe it is a straight fit.

Subject: 1/4 mile

Question:
Dear Wiz,

I run a highly modified 5 and will be hoping for some good times down the strip this year at USC.I run 15's with 195/45's on. The problem is that the wheels im running are very heavy, and I cant put the original wheels on coz ive had a big brake conversion. If I could get hold of some lighter wheels like compomotives(still 15's), etc, will these make any difference to my times. Or could you suggest some that are even lighter?

Cheers, Phil.

Answer:
Magnesium wheels are light but very expensive.
I doubt you would get more than 0.1 of a second anyway.
Keep the wheels the same until you can consistantly run the 1/4 mile to a maximum for your car and then start looking for more time saving bits.

Subject: Superchip

Question:
Dear Wiz,

I had a new engine put in my 5 about 500 miles ago,and am currently running it in. Ive had it all done to top spec by Ian at Europarts. I was just wondering, I never hear of anyone chipping a 5 turbo, and in the engines current state of tune, would it make any difference?Or are chips just expensive ways to increase the boost?

Cheers, Phil.

Answer:
There is nothing to ""chip"" on a 5.
If someone is selling a chip kit for the GTT then it is usually a boost upgrade and maybe a new jet for the carb. You can do this yourself for virtually nothing.
Just speak to Ian as he is very knowledgable.

Subject: Ignition light update 2

Question:
Hi wizz,

Me again!!

Just checked all the connections to the back of the alternator and they are fine. Put a meter across the back of the alternator whilst running and it was only putting out 12.2v! Should it not be putting out about 14v? Checked the regulater wires and they are both getting 12v with the ignition and whilst running.

Does this not mean that the alternator is faulty? Or is there something else?

Cheers

Chris.

Answer:
I would say the alternator or regulator is faulty.
You should see at least 13.4V

Subject: oil pressure part 2

Question:
whooooops sorry wiz i got my last question wrong it should have asked you why does my oil pressure (mechanical gauge)drop when the boost kicks in?

Answer:
the turbo will drain oil faster as it spins so back pressure in the system will be less therefore overall pressure will read less as the reading is usually taken from the turbo feed pipe.

Subject: FLAMING NOT

Question:
i recently got my car setup at 15 psi with larger fuel and air corrector jets.
i have a full ss scorpion zaust and back box, standard cam, no filter, and hybrid stage 1.
i just fitted my new rev limiter/full th gear shift and set it at 5000 rpm,
when the limiter kits in it sounds great and i get a cloud of black smoke which i take is burnt fuel, so where is the flames?
do you ned to be over fuelling by quite a bit? do you know what would be the rough rpm range to increase the chances of fire?
also to be a menace, if my fuelling/car is setup for 15 psi and i turn the boost down a little after this would it mean i would be overfuelling cos i dont know how the fuelling corrects its sell on the renaults.

thanks for bearing with me through my life story but i have every bit of faith you can help wizard old boy!!!
cheers

Answer:
Even a standard car will make power to 5500 rpm so 6000 is a better limit and revs help for flames.
I expect there isn't enough fuel to flame all the way to the backbox.
You will be overfuelling at low revs all the way to full boost if it is set lower than max.

Subject: Clio 16v Gearbox

Question:
Hi,
(1)Do you know weather a Clio 16v gearbox has a longer or shorter ratio than the GTT one, or are some gears longer and some shorter or some even the same?

(2)Will only the 16V box fit on or will other clio boxes fit as I have bought a GTT and the bloke that I bought it off said that it was a clio box.

(3)Do you know how I could identify it?

Thanks

Answer:
1) I believe the ratios are closer try checking in the Haynes manual for ratio's and final drives.

2) I expect all will fit but 16V is stronger.

3) Look for the metal tag fitted to one of the bolts on the box and take the number to a dealer.
