Subject: Limiting Maximum boost

Question:
Heyah, I've already got an in-car boost setup in my car but I want a way to limit the maximum boost on the dial to save my engine.
I've purchased an under-bonnet bleed valve but I get the feeling it won't do the job because it'll always bleed air from the pipe.
Any ideas how I can use what I have to set up a maximum boost or do I have to buy a spider valve?
Many thanks, hear from you soon.

Answer:
You need a three way bleed valve under the bonnet with the actuator pipes going through it and the bleed leading into the car and the in car adjuster (two way) One side of the two way valve is the input from the under bonnet valve and the other is the exhaust to go back into the engine bay and out to fresh air.

Is this ok?

Question:
my turbo is supposidly pushin 185 brake i recently changed my clutch and fitted a volvo 440 turbo 3 in 1 clutch kit about a month ago now the bloody thing is slippin when i come onto boost i keep gettin beeten by rs's xr's etc is it the clutch or do i have problems else where and would it be possible for me to fit a flywheel and clutch fom a -91 volvo 44o as these have a 215 mm clutch not 200

Answer:
You need the timing sensor lugs on the flywheel so i expect the volvo one will be no good. If it is a cheap recon clutch then it could be slipping but a decent new one like Valeo or Borg and Beck is fine up to and maybe past 200bhp.

Subject: Reserve fuel tank pump

Question:
Just to refresh your memory I asked a while ago about what could cause my reserve tank fuel pump to run all the time. Now i've finally had chance to spend some more time with my 5 i've taken the tank sender unit out and electrically it behaved correctly in relation to the float position. I've put more fuel in the tank and the gauge is now showing a good half, but the reserve light still flicks on and off, the relay in the back panel keeps clicking and the reserve pump still runs!! If I wiggle the wires on the actual pump I can make it stop running. So my question, do you now think it's a faulty relay, or is the actual pump that's loopy?

Answer:
If you can wiggle the wiring to make it stop then i would say the wiring or pump connectors are dodgy.

Subject: re door pins

Question:
hi again wizard...i've been having another look and the passenger door bolts off at the hinge yet the drivers door doesn't,whats that all about? lol.
so the n/s is the easier to do but it's the o/s thats the main prob...do you know if it's normal for one to bolt off and not the other?
or is it the french way of revenge?
pete

Answer:
I expect that the screw type has been drilled out to fit a pin or the whole hinge has been replaced at some point.

Also my in-car boost is currently three-way, can I bung one of the holes, if so which one is is it?!
Cheerz again for your pearls of wisdom!

Answer:

Subject: Alarms and Gromits

Question:
Hi,
Just a few questions. Firstly I’ve been trying to fit an alarm but I cant find any grommets to run the cables through (I’ve checked Haynes!). Secondly the alarm says it needs to be connected to a constant power circuit such as the courtesy light but must be able to handle 15a or more (courtesy light only has a 5a fuse, can i just change this fuse or is there somewhere else I could connect this to.
Thanks.

Answer:
There is a large grommet around the pedal box area up under the dash.
You may be better off getting an auto electrician to sort the alarm fitment.

Subject: air filter

Question:
hi wizz i'am getting a filter next week and wonderd if i will have to cut my original pipe to the air box to fit the green air filter,i want to be able to sell my car with the original air box cheers terry

Answer:
Most induction kits can be fitted in 3 ways.

1) Using original ""U"" pipe to get filter next to turbo.

2) Using 1/2 the ""U"" pipe to bring the filter nearer the intercooler area.

3) Fit it directly to the turbo inlet.

Your choice.

You said:
""Torque is needed to pull uphill better as a lightened engine drops off the revs faster as well""
Don't the revs drop off faster because there is simply less momentum within the engine to keep it rotating?

Yes.

Subject: choosing a dump valve

Question:
yo wiz, just wanting to know that while i have the cash, what the best all round dump valve/ blow off valve.

looks are unimportant, its mainly the louder the better and the more effective the better

cheers

Answer:
If money is no object then you could try the Blitz blow off valve or the Amazing valve that K-Tec have on their demo car.

If you mean normal dv's then i recommend the Forgemotorsport group A.

I checked the earth strap and it was loose, starts every time, cheers.

Just another quick question :-

Is there any little tests I can do to tell whether my clutch is on its last legs or not?

Low revs in 4th gear and boot it. If the clutch is going then it will spin up faster than you accelerate.

Subject: rear axle bearings/bushes?

Question:
Hi Wizard,

Just posted a message on the boards about this but I'll ask u too. I am getting alot of rear body roll when the car is warmed up. it has had new shocks in the last 12 months and the torsion bar has been lowered. I didnt notice it that much until I had new tyres fitted on new 15s. Do you think it could be axle bushes or anti roll bars? It is making me a bit nervous at high speed although when cornering hard it seems stable.

Answer:
It could be worn axle bushes but it could also be down to things like tyre pressures.

Subject: BLEED VALVE

Question:
wiz,
cheers for answering my question. My boost adjuster doesn't adjust. The kit i used was a basic 3way valve from rally design and the way i plumbed it was the front pipe going from the actuator to one side of the valve and the other pipe going from the valve to the pipe coming from the carb elbow, then the one on the underside of valve is used for the waste air.If could shed some light i would be very greatfull

Answer:
Sounds right to me.

What size bore pipe did you use, should be 4mm.

Subject: Tailgate

Question:
Hi Wizz.

Got a few things I need to get of my chest. I have just bought a Renault 5 Campus tailgate to replace mine which is rusting. This tailgate will not have the little rivets that the spoiler fits onto. How can I fix it so that the spoiler stays on and wont fall off when I close the boot. I want to keep the original spoiler.

Secondly. Do renault 5's have exhaust heat shields because my car makes a ringing noise when it gets over a certain rev range. It then seems to fade out. I have no power loss and BB have checked the car for pinking and they dont know what it is. It has only started doing this since I had a BB SS put on. Any ideas.
Your help is much appreciated

Answer:
Use something like ""No more nails"" to fix the spoiler.

I expect the exhaust is touching the heatshield around the fuel tank area.

Subject: Boost

Question:
Wiz,my boost adjuster now works, cheers. Two things ,when i open the adjuster the maximum psi i get is only around 15 ,is this normal?if so how do i get more boost.i've got a new turbo on it and the actuator has never been adjusted is this the right way to do it.If that's the case what's the simplest way to adjust the actuator i'e number of turns for 1psi +what psi should the gtturbo run at standard.thanks loads

Answer:
Standard boost is around 7-9psi depending on the car.
I expect the pipe bore is too large to get more boost.
Adjusting the actuator will effect minimum boost.

Subject: Oh No What Have i Done

Question:
me and my mate thought it would be intresting if we took out the bleed valve and just let all the air flow through it did but it went off my boost gauge scale 30psi+ when we stopped it was smoking white smoke straight from idle i think im running it a bit rich at the mo cos weve been experimenting with flames which we did get on 30psi+ with rev limiter. it has smoked alot recently as i suspect the turbo seals are starting to go only on idle after a while. my question is what other damage have i done ive already ordered new gaskets is there ne thing else i could of messed up... also if i were to build an engine to use at 30 psi at drags, are forged pistons easily available what else would be sensible

Tar

Answer:
I would put money on either the head gasket gone or a liner split for the white smoke.

Forged pistons are available but are expensive and not really necessary. Standard pistons are fine as it is the liner that is the weak point at that boost.
