Subject: boosting?!? Question: How far along the gauge is the needle ment to go as mine stops at the middle and the engine seams to lack power, i have a larger bore sorst could this be the problem? my mate suggested a bleed valve is this the solution? Cheers Matt Answer: If your car is standard apart from the exhaust then it should boost to about the B or O of the word turbo on the gauge. The larger exhaust may be affecting the boost level so you could adjust the actuator a little to bring the boost back in line. |

Subject: boosting still?!? Question: As before but i forgot to mention that the car is fitted with a dump valve as well, it appears to be working ok but could this be a cause? Answer: A slight leak from a dump valve will loose boost and still make the dumping sound. Take it apart and physically check the diaphram. |

Subject: Handbrake removal and refitting Question: Hi, I bought myself one of those ""universal"" replacement handbrake handles. To fit it i cut off the old leather one and unscrewed the handbrake button. Now I have put everything back exactly as it was with the spring and button and the handbrake wont click (it’s always on). I’ve tried removing everything, putting it back to how it was but it still doesn't work. The Haynes manual doesn't help at all so I don't understand how the mechanises works. Please can you help? Thanks! Answer: The button releases the ratchet from the pawl that holds the hand brake on. |

Subject: Heater fan Question: Wiz,my fan has stopped working, every time i turn it on i get a burning smell.how hard is it to change the heater fan assembly on the R5turbo.thanks Answer: Go under the bonnet, remove the plastic cover around the bonnet catch to gain access to the top of the fan. Remove the cover grill, two plastic butterfly nuts i think. Pull fan and motor assembly out, clean and refit. If this doesn't work then renew. |

Subject: Sticking in gear when hot Question: Hi Wiz Since changing my clutch cable/ pedal (genuine Renault parts), the other day (as getting it in gear was a bit of a pain sometimes), I have found that when the car gets hot, it sticks in gear, and I have to turn the engine off to get it in. I’ve tried changing the gearbox oil and putting a few washers in to increase the travel, but nothing works. But if you move the clutch lever coming from the gearbox whilst trying to get it in gear, it will go. Also the lever coming from the gearbox is very floppy! It moves in all directions. Do you think it’s a clutch problem? It was changed 52,000 ago. Cheers in Advance (Soz 4 the essay) Rich Answer: Sounds like the little plastic bush on the clutch arm has worn or broken away completely. |

Subject: Hellmans? no i Question: Wiz - please help I am getting some mayo at the top of my rocker cover and on the oil filler cap, i think it may be coming thru where the breather pipe connects, as it seems to be collecting where the little baffle plate is on the inside, i have cleaned out the oil seperator pot ages ago and it did have crud in it,as did the pipes.......could the seperator be the problem? i really dont think the head gasket has gone, and it hasn't had much use since i replaced the head/gasket/uprated bolts Answer: Short journeys will cause condensation in the breather system that looks like mayo. Clean out the whole breather system including the seperator and go for a long, long drive. If there is mayo there straight away then get a compression test to rule out the headgasket. |

Subject: Markings Question: Hi Wizard I have a replacement engine for my 5, it looks right, carb, inlet, exhaust, everything. But the markings on the engine says F18, should'nt it have said C1J, or something like that. Do you know if this is a GTT engine, if not what is it ? Thanks Answer: Try asking Renault as it may be different numbers for the new engines. |

Subject: no oil pressure & no hair left Question: hi wiz me again re:running out of hair to pull out. i've done the things you asked me to do and fitted a new rad thermostat and fan switch.i've asked on the boards about my oil pressure probs everyones been really helpful but i dont think they understand my real prob.the oil pressures fine even when the temp guage is up on 3/4 its only when i go on the motorway at 70/80 mph or give it some wellie round the lanes then let it go down to tickover it drops to zero and wont move up.i thought of detination and richened up the mixture and even lowered the boost but it still does it and the water temp is o.k heeeeeeeeeeeeeeellllllllllllllllllllllllllllp before i cook my turbo or torch my car!! p.s it's had a new oil pump and big end bearings,i've tried every type of oil and oil filter known to man the only noise from the engine is a rattley timing chain.if the tensioner is hydraulic could the oil peace out through that and cause a drop in pressure the same as big ends/mains do when they go? Answer: Sounds like it is a sender or wiring fault that is aggrivated by heat if it is not a physical problem. Never heard of a timing tensioner leaking oil like that. |

Subject: car weaker with RE209 than with phase1 ignition Question: I swapped my previous phase1 ECU to an RE209, which is almost new, so it is definetely not faulty. The car runs, but it is weaker than before. Is there a difference in the timing sensor for phase1 and phase2? Answer: The sensor is the same except for the length of the wires as the fitment positions are different. Am i right in thinking you have a different renix unit to std anyway (RE239 or something?)Could it be that your plugs are wrong for this type of renix unit? I take it the car is fine if you refit the original unit? |

Subject: Boost going AWOL Question: When i accelerate the boost goes from the beginning of the red (original renault boost guage) then about 1/2 second later it jumps to almost the entire red section. Just wondering what the problem is and how i can resolve it. The 11's been modified with airfilter, scorpion exhaust and engine mounted adjustable boost. Cheers Wizard. Answer: Sounds like the gauge is sticking if there is no fluctuation in power delivery. |

Subject: Question: Hi, gotta problem with the thermostat.. It´s way too hot.. wont keep the carburator cool enough. It has signed with ELTH 90-84 measures. I bought it as genuine part from RENO. Do you happen to know is there any ""colder"" ones which I formally owned also but it burned with other wires when the fan blowed. I know that theres also 2 kind of size in connection end in inlet, 8mm and 10mm (which is used in 11 turbos I think). So where to ask for colder thermo or do you know is other car manufactors using same kind of systems ??? Thanks in advance.. -S- Answer: I am not 100% sure what you are after but as far as i know there is only one type of anti perculation fan sensor for the 5. |

Subject: Ignition Light Question: Hi Wizz, i have a slight problem so I will start from the begining! About 2 weeks ago my battery light started flashing up on my dash. So I looked in the Haynes manual and it said the alternator or the belt. I replaced the belt about 2 months ago so I tightened it up a bit. The light went off then. It then came back on Tuesday and stayed on so I thought it was the alternator. I put a voltmeter across the battery and it was only reading 11.5 volts. So I went and got a new alternator for it today, put it all on no probs. Then connected it to my girlfriends car to give it a jump start. It started first time. I left it running for about 5 - 10 mins. I then put a meter across the battery and it was reading just under 12v. I put that down to the battery loosing some of it's charge. But whilst it was running the battery light on the dash was still illuminated! So I thought that I would just check to see if it would start of it's own accord and it did after about 3 attempts. The battery light is still on! So i thought that I would try it again. It didn't want to start. The engine does not even turn. And there is a clicking noise about every 5 seconds when trying to start. Yet it will jump start fine!?! Any suggestions? Cheers Chris. Answer: I expect that the battery is holding a slight charge but when it is left for a while it looses it. This could be down to an alternator fault, a current drain (stereo amps left on etc) or a faulty battery. Try a good battery from another car to see if this works. |

Subject: Lexus like rear lights ??? Question: Hi again.... Do you happen to know is there available Lexus like rear lights ?? Those would be very ""crystal"" in 5´s.... If you have any hints I´d be very glad... There is no special part dealers in Finland to 5´s or other ""old"" ones.. TIA Answer: There is a german company (SK Tuning) that do the clear rear clusters but there are no Lexus type lights available. You could allways get the standard lights sprayed to match the body colour. |

Subject: turbo timer Question: Hi wiz just got a greddy turbo timer,it went in fine and does the job! except i'm a bit baffled how to find the speedo sensor wire ?? it says in the instructions to connect the purple wire to speedo sensing line,so if you pull away whilst on countdown it will cut the engine. also there is a brown wire for the handbrake any ideas???? Oh and one final question my alarm system cannot be armed whilst engine is running therefore i have to hang around waiting to arm it! any way to bypass this so that it will arm ?? cheers for all your help phil Answer: I would say that you need to slice into the speedo cable which runs from the gearbox, up near the airbox and into the dash. The handbrake wire will need connecting to the handbrake warning light cable. Speak to the alarm manufacturer for more info on bypassing. |

Subject: car weaker with RE209 than with phase1 ignition #2 Question: I checked every hose, and I did found a split hose (about 1 inch long cut) just before the carb plenum. This is likely to be the cause, nothing to do with the ECU. Answer: Okey Dokey! |

Subject: Lightening Flywheel Question: I have read that lightening the flywheel will reduce the torque from the engine. Is this true? If it is, doesn't this mean less power therefore slower acceleration? Answer: Torque is turning force and a heavier flywheel will have more force but will spin slower as it takes more energy to spin it. A lightened flywheel will spin up faster meaning faster revving and more acceleration as long as the car isn't trying to go uphill! |

Subject: Oil cooler Question: Am planning to fit oil cooler soon. Will this make a big difference in terms of temperature and oil pressure? I plan to fit it myself. what size would i need and where would it go for best results??? Thanks Answer: With a seperate oil cooler you need to fit a thermostat to ensure the oil heats up quickly in the engine and then runs through the oil cooler after it is up to temp. It should make no difference to pressure as long as it is a sensible size. I would say a max of 13 row cooler in the front bumper airflow for best results. |

Subject: Carb blow up :( Question: As you know the other week my car had a little problem with the accel pedal sticking whilst near the floor. now the alt belt has been thrown off(cos the alt is a bit loose) but im going to tighten that up. Thing is when i try and close the carb using the spindle the accel pedal would connect to it doesnt seem to close very far, i would say about 45 degrees still open. i know it shouldnt close totally flat but it should close not to far off that shouldnt it? there appears to be a small item which stops it going any further and im not sure if its there by design or if its something that has broken off and got trapped there due to under bonnet tempratures. a few of the pipes have been damaged by the small amount of flames that appeared under the bonnet and im going to have to replace those, as well as the accel cable. im not sure if the HG has gone but i will get the carb fixed and cleaned up first before i check. what i was going to do was re-fill the cooling system after cleaning the carb and take the waste gate off the actuator and set it fully open so the turbo wont spin up. then leave the carb elbow off and start the engine. This is without a new accel cable by the way. Am i right in assuming this should give the turbo a good amount of protection from any subsucant boost up from the carb being dead and allow me to shut down the engine without worrying if its spinning up??? Also another question on cooling. ive gone thru 2 relays on the electric fan for the rad so im wondering if its safe to get a newer more capable switch for it, and then hot wire thru the switch avoiding relays and any other wiring for it? IE make my own loom up for it. i would have to fuse it so im thinking that a 25 amp fuse should be ok for it? oh and some nice thick wires designed for outdoor use and 250v@13amps? Thanks KiP Answer: The fire will probably have melted part of the linkage to the carb. Renewal of the carb may be required as heat may have warped it a bit. The throttle flap should close to almost touching but not quite as this would stall the engine due to lack of mixture! As for the rad fan, use a decent aftermarket 30 amp relay, a ""chicken switch"" in the dash and proper 12volt wiring of at least 27 amps for safety. |

Subject: Lightening Flywheel Part 2 Question: Hi Wiz, in my last post you said: ""A lightened flywheel will spin up faster meaning faster revving and more acceleration as long as the car isn't trying to go uphill!"" I understand that a lightened flywheel will spin up faster but I don't understand why going up hill will make a difference. If you had two cars exactly the same, except one had a lightened flywheel, wouldn't the one with the lightened flywheel accelerate up the hill faster as the engine has less weight to spin up? Answer: Torque is needed to pull uphill better as a lightened engine drops off the revs faster as well. Does that help? |

Subject: Engine transplant Question: Dear Mr Wizard. I was just wondering whether you knew how difficult it would be to transplant a Gtturbo engine into a standard Renault 5. What components need to be uprated,eg brakes, gearbox, clutch etc? JAMES Answer: You will need to uprate all the braking and suspension componants to at least GT spec preferably higher. You will need to use a GTT or 16V Clio gearbox with GT clutch and driveshafts, hubs etc. You will also need to fit the GT fuel system. I would suggest selling the standard 5 and buying a GTT as it will work out cheaper. |
