Subject: How sensible/crazy can a 5 go

Question:
Ive got a 5 with 80,000 on the clock. Am going to get a brand new wengine from GTTuning when Head Gasket goes etc. But i wanted to know, with a brand new engine, how sensible is it to run 18-20psi boost on a 1.4 engine, not all the time just when necessary, standard will be 8psi. I dont want to be replacing heads, and gearboxes every 30,000 miles, so what psi would make my new car engine last, will practice on my own engine to see what breaks at big boosts, so i can get it uprated on my new engine. Will have the cyber cooler on my car, so if you know what this is from GTTuning then is that okay for 25 psi on special occasions. Sorry to keep going on like this. but what turbo should i be looking for with this sort of boost. a small one, or hybrid, i want fast spin up. Cheers.

Answer:
At 14psi, very little will go wrong on a standard engine.
All alloy intercoolers are tested to at least 30psi, the GTTuning item is no exception.
If you want fast spool up, then a small turbo is the way togo, but it will not last that long at 25psi! You could spend big bucks on a roller bearing turbo that will spool up as quick and then last at 25psi.

Subject: that dreaded perc fan

Question:
Hi Wiz

my '88 phase II has 1 anti perc fan sensor under the carb. I've put a brand new sensor from Renault on but still nothing. If you take the wires off and put a paper clip between them, the fan comes on though.!! any ideas.

ps how can i buy a couple of those rtoc big window stickers.?

Many thanks Nigel

Answer:
maybe the sensor isn't getting hot enough to work!
Take it out, put it in a pan of water, heat the water up, connect a continuity detector across the terminals, make a note of what temp the water gets to when the switch comes 'on'...if it dont come on then you know its fecked! if it does, then you know that you're not getting up to that particular temperature!

speak to Rach H about the stickers.

Subject: Tailgate

Question:
Hi Wizz,

Hope you can help. I have just bought a tailgate from a scrapyard as mine is rusting round the window. As i am getting it re-sprayed I was wondering whether the bottom plastic trim could be moulded on permenantly to the tailgate and smoothed off so that it looks like one piece. My concern is whether I would ever need to remove it and whether it is likely to crack when I shut the boot. Is there an alternative for a DIY modder with basic mechanical tools. Thanks once again for your help.

Answer:
I personally would leave the strip alone. You need to be able to remove it, when you change the boot lock! (these do break!)

Subject: Jet washing the Engine

Question:
HI,

I was thinking of jet washing inside my engine bay, alot of crap has built up in 11 years, but I don't want to get water into anything it shouldn't.

Which specific areas should I cover up or avoide spraying altogether.

Thanks

Answer:
all the electrics! *lol*

make sure you don't blow the little white wire that attaches to the starter motor off, else it wont try to start!

just try to spray away from the electrics!- or even better don't try to start the car, until it is completely dry!

Subject: Popping out of 5th

Question:
I have the 1.7 monaco lowered and all that, whilst going down some country lanes 2 nite it keeps popping out of 5th!. There is a lot of play in the gear stick when in gear and u can feel the engine rocking.... is this the engine mounts?
If so can i buy uprated ones? prima racing etc??
Cheers

Answer:
Check the engine mounts first of all, by jacking the engine up and checking them individually. If they are all ok, then you've got to start looking at the gearbox. The internals could be knackered :-(

Subject: Turbo chip

Question:
GTTuning do a Turbochip for £100 which gives you 160bhp, what exactly does the chip do to you're car??? and are they safe???

Answer:
It contains some carb jets, an underbonnet bleed valve and some tubing.
It makes the turbo push more air into the engine , by bleeding off alittle of the air contolling the wategate, fooling it into keeping closed for longer!- hence more boost!

they are safe, as long as you follow the instructions supplied with them. If in doubt, speak to the manufacturer of the kit. :-)

Subject: Rattling

Question:
Hi Wiz,

Just got a new side exit exhaust fitted, seems to be some rattling, could it be the downpipe is loose? Also it seems to pop a lot and sometimes sounds like it is blowing.

Answer:
Could all be down to a loose downpipe joint but some popping is normal with most side exits.
Hold a rag tightly over the tailpipe and check for leaks.

Subject: stuter in 1st gear

Question:
hi wiz,

my car seems to struggle in first gear if you try and boot it. if you need the power down quickly it stutters, almost like its stalling before the power comes in any ideas???

Answer:
does it do it when the car is cold or warm?

have you checked your plugs?

It could be your carburettor, needing maintenance...ie a new diaphragm kit...or just a general clean.

I've also found that most carb problems seem to sort themselves out after a very hard run down the motoway for a couple of hours ;-)

Subject: tappets or manifold gasket?

Question:
Hi,

My car's made a slight tapping noise since I bought it about six weeks ago. I've always assumed it was the 285 cam, but just now, after a fairly hard thrash, the tapping's got louder. It seems to be coming from the top of the engine and is there whether the engine's under load or in neutral.

It's quite loud - more of a 'clacking' than a tapping really. Loud enough for people to look at the car as it goes past! Is it likely to be the manifold gasket or something else? At least one of the manifold studs is missing.

Thanks in advance for your help,
Alex

Answer:
When the manifold gasket goes, it sounds louder than you usual tappetty noise, it may also be louder when the car is cold. Missing or loose manifold nuts are the most likely cause of the problem! you may also be experiencing a slight loss of power, as not all the exhaust gas is being fed to the turbo. Make sure you sort the manifold nuts out, and then come back to me.

Dear Wizard,
Still await your diagnosis of my latest problem/s.Meanwhile I'll keep you up to date with my labours!I have now connected an old mini oil pressure guage to the turbo oil feed pipe--still no oil presure.I have now fitted another oil pump not new but known to be working---still no oil pressure..f...ck! In desperation I have refitted old big end bearings!-- no oil pressure..f..ck ...f..ck..f..ck!!!!!
I have now given up and booked it in to Prima for diagnostic check.Hopefully Neil can find the problem before the labour charges go sky high. This has really pissed me off. Any last minute suggestions, it goes in Thursday?

Subject: Trouble with water injection

Question:
I brought my car with water injection already fitted. It has never worked. Im not sure if it has been fitted with all the wireing. I have now got a live to the pump. If i adjust the pressure switch it stays on all the time. Do you know where i can get a wireing diagram? Do you know whats wrong.

Answer:
what system is it? if it is Aquamist then ask them (ERL) for a diagram, and explain what is wrong.
If you've got a homemade system, probably best to ask the person you bought it off!

Subject: No Gears

Question:
Hi Wiz,

I went on a longish drive in the last few days when it has been very hot and found that i couldnt get into any gears unless i really pull the stick hard.

It has never done this before (ever) and i need your help...

Many Thanks
And keep up the good work Wiz.

Steve Keating

Answer:
Sounds like the clutch may be on it's way out.....
did the gears crunch when you forced them in?
if not, you could first of all check to see the state of your gearbox oil...if it has a silvery sheen to it when you take it out, you know summat has started to wear away inside the box!

Subject: Bleed valve

Question:
Hi, i have got a bleed valve fitted to my car and was just wondering, wot the exact purpose fot it was, i think it has been set to 15 psi by graham goode when i serviced it. However if i took it off wouldn't it mean that too much boost was going through it all the time??? i.e at the moment i can set more or less pressure to go through!!!

Answer:
if you removed the bleed valve and did nothing with the tubing that was left behind, then the turbo would give as much boost as it possibly could, and blow your engine up! If you wanted to remove it properly, then you would have to trace the tubing back into the engine bay and join the cut actuator pipe back together. this would then run at whatever boost the actuator rod was set at. (hopefully it sould be low boost- but you never know...so be careful!

Subject: What carb

Question:
Can you tell me if there is a kit which up grades my carb or do i have to buy a carb already done? Im running 16p.s.i of boost on a standard carb. I have a uprated turbo with a different actuator. Thanks for your time.

Answer:
you can buy a grp 'A' carb kit from renault, that includes an enlarged venturi.....i think it used to cost £40 + vat.

If you fancy a go at upgrading your carb yourself , then its probably better to reduce the size of your air corrector a little, and increase the size of the main jet a tad too.
It really depends what you wanna do with your car.

Subject: Cooling and electrical

Question:
Hi wizz,
Just little old KiP here again. just wondering if you could shed some wisdom on me ikle GTT. as you know i have a GT now and am well chuffed with the performance. begining of red zone is more than enuf for me at the moment but i have a prob or 2 i need to sort first before i can do any proper long runs with it.

1. i need to get the speedo working. GAV had a look at the 3pin connector under the bonnet on the Passanger side wing and cleaned it out, and it still doesnt work. everything else on the dash seems to be spot on. am i right in assuming that either the sender unit on the box has gone(can it be tested???) or the actual unit in the display has gone??

2. I have a manual fan switch inside the car and the electrics seem to have a dodgey connection sumwhere so im wondering if i can just connect it to either the connections for the fogs(as i aint got ny in at the mo) or lead a new thicker set of wires to the fan from the switch setup to take power straight from a power connection which powers up when the ignition is on.(any wiring diagrams for this or is the haynes a good source?)

3. i have found the standard renault wiring plug for the radio(orange block and it seems in good nick) so i was wondering if iots safer to connect my new £350 worth of blau radio via aRenault =) ISO adapter or get an ISO connector with bare wires and wire it up that way???

Thanks for your help again,
KiP

Answer:
1) get Gav* to take his clocks out (assuming they work in his car) and stick them in your car...if his speedo works, then you know its your clocks that are knackered. If his suddenly stops working when in your car, assume the wiring to the back of the dash is dodgy......worst case scenario is that the sender in the bos is boogered.
2)Either really...just down to your personal choice...lets hope the fog lamp relay isn't knackered else you still won't get power to the fan switch!
3) cant you get a renault> blaupunkt adapter from Halfords?- or any othere ICE shop? saves chopping wires....

Subject: Nitrous

Question:
Can you use Nitrous on a GT Turbo without loads of wheel spin. How much can i use, 25, 50, 100hp???

Answer:
Nitrous on a 5 hasn't really been tried in any great amounts. The main problem is that the cheaper kits are just a 'one hit' kit, where you get a single dose at full throttle. This really strains the transmission and engine. If you can afford a progressive kit, this in theory would be much better for the car. It will probably wheel spin whatever you do anyway, especially in 1st and 2nd. I wouldn't really like to try above 50 or 75 bhp, as you could be asking for trouble.

Subject: DIY Grp A Carb

Question:
Hey Wiz!!
I have problem! I thought I would try this grp A carb lark myself so I had me carb rejetted to a 135 mainjet and took me venturi to the local engineers and had 3mil taken out (25mm to 28mm). Now when it boosts, it stutters really badly and only runs a bit better with the choke on. Have I shaggd it???

Answer:
The stuttering could be caused by underfuelling or uneven fuelling. Have you remembered to reduce the size of the air corrector to a 100 or 90 , as the enlarged venturi doesn't really suck much fuel into the passing airstream.

Subject: DIY Grp A Carb (cont.)

Question:
Hello again wiz,

No, I didn't change the air corrector. I did ask a couple of places about wot was needed for a Grp A carb but they wouldn't tell me!! Also, is 28mm too big??? I was told it might be even tho Grp A are 27mm.

Cheerz Wiz!

Answer:
:-)
change the air corrector to a smaller one, this should help you.
+ As far as im aware 28mm isn't too big.

Subject: Lowering

Question:
I have a standard renault 5 gt no turbo yet but i have the engine waiting 2hopefully go in with no probs.i lowered my car but the back dont seem low enough, it just goes down to were the rubber starts on my 15"" but i was wondering is there another notch down were its just at the top of the alloy?

Answer:
you could lower the back torsion bar another notch. That is the easy bit, compared to putting a gt turbo lump in a standard 1.4 5!!!

Subject: Tappets

Question:
Can i get my tappets tightened as my car sounds like a rattly fiesta? is it hard to do?

Answer:
its not that hard to do.
take the rocker cover off.
Jack one front wheel up in the air.
Put the car in 5th gear.
Follow the haynes manual for the settings of the tappets...turning the road wheel to move the engine to its next position. (i.e not having to use a 19mm spanner to turn the engine!)

Subject: Turbo!

Question:
Hi Wiz

Continuing from the last turbo nightmare.

As you know my turbo went a couple of weeks ago, i had it reconditioned and was told that it had been over boosted and that’s why it went. (Person i brought the car from wound the boost right out!)

I put the new one on after flushing the system /new oil filter, and it blew again after about 10 mins of normal driving? Sent it went back under guarantee and was told i it had gone due to particles of crap in the oil so i had to pay again. So i flushed the system with oil etc as before, and it went yet again, exactly the same way!

Help!!!! what do you think maybe causing this to happen or is it just bad luck?

Cheers in advance
Rich

Answer:
technically speaking...i think you've got crap in your engine:-)

probably the best thing to do is buy a turbo oil feed filter, and not have to worry about shite getting into your turbo!
You can also try sticking a very strong magnet onto your oil filter and onto your sump....this will stop particles of metal circulating your engine!

Failing this, you may have to take your sump off and clean it out, and see what horrors lie in wait for you :-(

Subject: Hard acceleration

Question:
Wiz,

gotr a problem that i need some help with, in my car when driving under light to normal acceleration the car is fine but when under medium or hard acceleration there is a very strong smell of fuel vapour, i cant find any signs of leaking fuel lines but it would leak all the time then. its quite concerning, the performance seems to be down a little bit at the top end aswell. any ideas im desperate?

Answer:
you probably have a leaky seal somewhere.
it could be the manifold gasket or any of the carb gaskets.
try sorting the manifold gasket first, if it doesn't stop the fuel smell then get a carb service kit and replace the gaskets in the carb.

Subject: anti-perc fan

Question:
i've recently bought a 5 turbo which has been garaged and off the road for around 8 years. the cars been fully serviced and runs fine, but when the engine is hot, the anti-perc fan is staying on for around 45 mins. should it run for this long or could there be a problem. the sensor on the heat shield has been changed and its made no difference.

Also the car is running hot but not over heating, yet!! I've changed the coolant and thermostat and it hasent helped. what should i do next, without having to spend too much money?

cheers

Answer:
has the car sat for 8 years with or without coolant in the engine???
either way the liners and internals of the engine will have corroded ALOT!
First thing to change is the radiator, as this is probably the worst affected item. This should transform the car....if not, you've got bigger problems to worry about...:-( (new liners?, head?, blah blah...depression sets in...)
