Subject: replace flywheel

Question:
hi again, ive realised why my car makes a terrible noise when trying to start it its because the flywheel teeth are worn. what is the best method for replacing the flywheel can i do this without removing the engine? any advice will be apprciated.
ps can i use the flywheel of a normal 1.4 engine?

Answer:
I am not sure if you can use a standard flywheel but i would suggest that there are enough flywheels around to get a GT one.
You will have to remove either the engine or the gearbox.

Subject: Flames on demand

Question:
Hi Wiz,

How do you get flames from the exhaust on demand, as seen at most cruises and Modded Car Shows? Is there a switch on the ignition or what?

Will

Answer:
You can fit a system to do this or you can just have an excess of fuel and a rev limiter!

Subject: digital dash

Question:
we hear it's possible to fit a digital dash out of an astra gte into a 5 turbo how would we go about this?
thanks in advance, paul

Answer:
You will need the gearbox speed sensor from the same car that the dash came from as they are matched. You will also need to rewire all the sensors to match the dash to the car wiring.

Subject: Anti Perculator Fan

Question:
Hi Wiz. I think the perculator fan's broken on my car. I don't remember hearing it work since I've owned my '89 5 GT turbo. If it's not working, is there a thermostat or switch that needs to be replaced or do I need a new perculator fan unit? Or is there a fuse that I need to replace maybe?

Answer:
There should be a fuse fitted in a fuse holder near to the perc fan (it was a Dealer mod) and a relay that also goes near to the fan.
You will have to check the wiring to the sensors on the carb base and turbo heat shield as well.

Subject: RE: Air pipe

Question:
Hi Wiz,

Sorry to crow on but i may not have asked the last question properly.

The pipe in question is the one that comes from the top of the air box and goes to the back of the turbo, under the heat sheld. Its about 1 inch diam.

Thanks for the great answers.

Steve Keating

Answer:
You mean the hot air feed pipe.
I would forget about this and fit another cold feed from the bumper up to that point if i were you!

Subject: noise.

Question:
how's it going oh wise one.my problem for today is my car makes a loud hissing noise as i boost up.the noise sounds a bit like paper tearing and is almost as loud as my dumpvale at 13-14psi.whilst looking for leeks i noticed that the caseing around the perc fan is cracked.could this be a cause of noise and boost loss.the noise does not sound like metal on metal and my turbo has only done 5,000 miles the old one had done 83,000 and was still pulling fine but mabye not as quick as it could be.
many thanks.........

Answer:
If you still have the pipe connecting the perc fan to the top boost hose then i would say that the valve attached to the bulkhead has gone.
Try blocking off the take off at the boost hose end and see if the noise goes away.

Subject: on and on!!??

Question:
Wiz, what would be the cause of the boost gradually rising from 9psi, and keeps going?? Could it be a possible actuator spring gone weak, or an extremely small boost leak? Also this boost prob, seems to be irratic, in that the boost level on the gauge never reads the same???

Answer:
I would say it would be down to actuator or its small pipe having a split that sometimes opens more than other times.

Subject: Grinding Noise

Question:
Hi Wiz,

Yet another problem to plague your brain cells with!!!!!

At idle everything is fine but then if i start driving, at about 20mph+ i get a funny whining noise from the front of the car. This is continual and gets louder the faster you go?? BUT the noise stops when i turn left..what the heck can it be cos it is really getting on my nerves.

Thanks

Answer:
I would think that your problem is related to the right hand wheel bearing but i may be wrong!

Question:
dear turbo wiz i have just purchased a stunning leather interior from a 19 valver, the backs went straight in! any idea how the fronts might go in? the subframes are about 150 mm wider but i cant seem to get anywere with the subs on the 5 seats cos they are integral to the seat
mmmmmhhhh! im stuck please help

Answer:
You have three choices.
1) Modify the 19 subframe to fit the car.
2) Modify the car to fit the subframes.
or
3) Cut the subframe off the 5 seat and weld the 5 subframe to the 19 seats.

Subject: Door drops

Question:
Hi Mr wizzzzzzzzzzz

Ive got a bit of a problem with my doors its just that there is more play in them than there is in school playground at lunch time what can I do to sort this out . Many thanks in advance
Dan

Answer:
You can jack up the door to line it back up again using a trolley jack and bit of wood on the outer end of the door. This will bend the hinges back into line but will still have play. or you could renew the door hinge pins possibly with bigger pins if you have the old type.

Subject: air filter!?

Question:
hi again, ive got an pipercross induction kit and was thinking about putting on a breather filter! now i was told that these are a waste of time?what do u think and does it make any difference and also what do you use to blank of the hole in the inlet pipe on the turbo?many thanks ken!

Answer:
Breather filters are fitted by people who do not want the oil fumes being recirculated back through the turbo. You can use many things to block the hole like a bolt cut to fit or even a proper blanking plug that you can get from Forge motorsport.

Subject: smokin

Question:
hello again wiz, i have yet more smokey concerns. On the start up i get oily smoke for about 5 mins and then it clears...today i was driving for about an hour with no smoke until a give it some and i got light oily smoke for about 5mins and then it cleared after about 20 mins i opened it up again. It smoked again for about 3mins and then cleared,i'm not red lining it when i do this. the previous owner had change the turbo and i believe it's not done many miles,i don't know what state the turbo was in before he brought it I'am changing the valve stem rubbers next week end anyway but do you think it could have a secondery prob or could i be burning oil deposited by the worn valve stem rubbers while driving at an easy pace?
cheers pete

Answer:
If the valve seals don't cure the problem then it may be one of two things.
1) Worn/leaky turbo seals
or
2) It could be oil from the sump getting past worn piston rings or if you still have the standard breather setup then it could be excess crank pressure from the worn rings blowing oil into the breather system and on through to the turbo. If this is the case then try removing the breather pipe from the turbo ""U"" bend inlet pipe and blocking the hole, put the loose pipe into a makeshift oil catch tank (coke bottle?) and see if you collect much oil.

Subject: Is this normal?

Question:
Hi Wiz

Just a quick question: When I accelerate from rest, or am getting back on the gas after changing gear the boost reading will rise from 0 up to 15 psi and then it will back off to 14 psi where it will settle. Is this normal?

Will

Answer:
That is the actuator equalising the pressure and is fine unless the boost drops a lot.

Subject: Smoothed tailgate question.

Question:
I'm thinking of smoothing my tailgate - removing everything wiper, washer (no need with the Carisma spoiler) and hopefully taking off the lock but I'm not sure how to get around it - what do I need to use as a sort of popper - I was considering wiring it using the rear wiper button and electrics already in place as this would be redundant - is this a viable options or are there any other ways???

Answer:
That sounds like a good idea to me.
You will need a solenoid valve and linkage to activate the lock but it is simple enough.

Subject: top speed??

Question:
hello wiz,

what is the top speed you can get out of a standard GT turbo. My speedo says 135 is that right???

Answer:
It should be right as the gearbox signals an electronic speedo but it can be reading up to 10% high so i would say your top speed is more like 125 assuming you are at about 6000rpm.

Subject: Very cheap intercooler

Question:
Hi Wiz,

I've been told that a Toyota Starlet Turbo's Intercooler is huge and thin enough to fit in the recess between cross member and bumper on the R5. As you can get these intercoolers for about 70 euros (about 40 quid) in Dismantlers in Ireland - I think its well worth it - but will it fit? Has anyone done it yet? Any info appreciated

Will

Answer:
I have never heard of that before so why don't you do it and be the first! (Well the first i have seen anyway)

Question:
Hi turbo wizard.Since i have lowerd my 5 by 50mm on the front and 35mm on the back if has developed a vibration when under load but stops when you back off the power.i think it might be drive shaft. What do you think it might be.one thing i have a o/s wheel bearing going could this be the problem.please help.thanks Adam Pakenham

Answer:
I would check out the driveshaft before you do the wheel bearing as if it is worn then it will save you stripping everything twice.

Subject: Dump Valve

Question:
Wiz,

I've heard a rumour that a piston dump valve can do damage to a R5 engine. Is this true??

Answer:
Only if it is sticking.
Some of the older dump valves had problems with the seals sticking which caused pinking due to a lean mixture.
The newer ones have different seals but you are still advised to strip, clean and lubricate them periodically.

Subject: Anti Perc Fan

Question:
Hi Wiz

My Anti Perc fan appears to have stopped working. I have read previous answers and have short the 2 wires on the turbo sensor, and it still doesn't work. I have checked for a postive voltage on both of these wires and nothing. I have tried to locate the fuse, which I eventaully found (I think) it is connected to the alternator (not good) The fuse is ok.Can you tell me A) where the fuse should be wired to, and secondly do you think its the relay thats gone or the motor.

Cheers

Zoomy

Answer:
I would try the relay first as they are prone to filling with water and failing.
The fuse gets its power from the alternator rather than the battery as it was a modification made after the cars were recalled and it is cheaper to do it that way rather than rewiring the whole engine loom.

Subject: stud patterns

Question:
hi wiz i was just wondering do you know what other wheel stud patterns are the same as the r5.
pete

Answer:
Other Renaults have the same stud pattern and some have the same offset.
Other makes have the same stud pattern (100mm pcd x 4stud) but as far as i know none have the correct offset of 35mm.

Subject: Boost loss

Question:
Hi wiz,

When I floor it the boost go`s up to 21psi
and then go`s back down to 15psi as the revs saw.
Have I split a hose. There still standard at the moment.

Cheers Daniel

Answer:
I would say more likely a tired actuator spring but it could possibly be a hose.

There are many shades of Tungston grey so just look at the paint code on the VIN plate in the engine bay near the drivers suspension turret.

Subject: 1/4 mile time?

Question:
hi wiz, just a bit of advice i am going dwn t the meet at santa pod please could u advise me of wot 1/4 mile time categry i should go in i run 15 inch wheels 195/45/15 tyres and run 16 psi boost standard just about everything else, and also is there a recomended tyre pressure 4 this tyre size on the five? cheers jay!

Answer:
I would say normal tyre pressures between 26 and 30 psi but if you have a pump then you can lower them to about 15psi on the front for the strip and pump them back up for the trip home.
I would expect times in the 15's

Subject: Engine Mods.

Question:
Could you give me an idea of what modification/tuning steps I should take to get more power. I don't want ""blistering pace"" but I do want faster and I definitely want reliable. My head's bursting with all the jargon. (I ain't no mechanic) Cheers. Bri.

Answer:
I am assuming your car is standard at the moment and will start from the beginning. After you give the car a full service including fuel filter then:-

1) Decent 2 1/4"" exhaust
2) Air filter/cone filter with cold air feed.
3) Strap and flow the intercooler or replace it with an alloy one.
4) Using a bleed valve or the actuator arm, up the boost to 14psi/1 bar.
5) Get it set up or rolling roaded.

This will give you a reliable 140+ bhp and plenty of torque.

Subject: More power

Question:
I recently read your tips on gaining more power, just one question, you recommend ""Using a bleed valve or the actuator arm, up the boost to 14psi/1 bar."" Is this safe to do with the standard head gasket. Can you run at 14 for long periods of time without causing damage to the gasket.

Just a thought as i cant afford to replace it :)

Cheers

Jon

Answer:
As long as the fuelling is correct then you can run over 20 psi on a standard gasket so 14 psi is fine.

Subject: Mappable ignition

Question:
How easy/hard is it to get a mappable ignition system for the R5? Preferably one that will take account of boost, engine load, charge temperature, etc. and alter the timing to suit. I've asked GT Tuning, BB Tuning and a few others, but none of them have such a piece of kit.

Thanks,
Alex

Answer:
No one does one specifically for the 5 as it is an expensive bit of kit and will probably cost more than a lot of peoples cars.
Try looking through the back of mags like CCC (Cars and Car Conversions) and ring the companies advertising the sort of thing you want.

Subject: Knocking Noize @ Left Turns

Question:
Oh Wiz Master,

Recently, when I turn left doing anything more than 5-10 miles per hour there's an audiable knocking noize and small vibrations thru the steering wheel. It's only when I turn left, and only when my foot is down on the accelarator. The second I ease off the pedal the knocking stops. Any ideas?

Mucho Gracias : )

Tud.

Answer:
I would check the driveshafts and all suspension conponants for wear.

Subject: How much can u do with £1800

Question:

Hi wiz

well i have saved up £1800 and i want to start work on the engine.
The car has in gttuning in car boost control its lowered and on 15s and thats it.

Plus i was thinking of moving the header tank to where the pec fan was would this upset the car?
thanks
simon

Answer:
Your best bet is to speak to David at K-Tec if you are down that way as he will put together a package for you which i am sure will include some discount if you spend that much at once.

You want the header tank as high as possible to prevent air locks in the system so if you move it it will be better in the scuttle tray on the drivers side.
