Subject: How long to warm up???? Question: Hi again Wiz, How long should my gt turbo take to warm up??? I go on a 20 minute journey and still it struggles without the choke on and the temp gauge is only just above the 1/3 mark and the heaters dont get warm at all!! If i replace the thermostat, will this help?? or will it make my 5 run a lot warmer?? Cheers Wiz. Answer: In this wintery weather it is a must to have a thermostat fitted to get the car warm enough to get to working temperature. If you haven't got one in then fit one now. |

Subject: Electrical Question: Just a little one really (i hope) 1.The main console lights have gone off are they on a fuse or relay? 2.do you know any decent scrap dealers as i need a drivers window motor? Answer: 1. Fuse or try the wires on the dimmer switch as they may have fallen off or come loose. 2. Try any of the breakers in the contacts section or one of the tuners like Europarts. |

Subject: still stalling when cold Question: hi wizz I am still having bother with my 5 stalling on v cold mornings it only happens when you fire it up revs pick up then it dies this may happen a couple of times then everything is fine I have checked mixture added some comma carb magic but it still seems the same have you any other ideas as too where to look..thanks Answer: I have had a few cars lately that have been a little like this and then run fine after they have got warm. I think that it is just a little condensation in the electrics/HT circuit, and a good spray of a water displacing spray/oil seems to do the trick. |

Subject: Strange noises Question: I've taken my GTT off the road because I am so scared by the noise it is making. Hopefully I'm just being paranoid. I can best describe the noise as a metallic tinkling noise (if you get what I mean). Like ball bearings in a baked bean can. I reckon it might be pinking....but it only seems to be making the noise between 2500 and 3000 revs, and on a trailing throttle, say 1000 revs. It doesn't seem to be making the noise as I approach the rev limiter....but with a Grp A exhaust, and pipecross filter it might just be being drowned out. Any ideas? I've mailed BB tuning who I live about 50 miles away from...but I'm petrified to drive the car there as I can't afford to trash the engine. Pleeeease help. Tom Answer: First of all i would check for anything loose in the engine bay that may be rattling. If not then if you are using normal unleaded or have had the head skimmed then it could be pinking. For a test, try pouring some octain booster into the tank if you can't get hold of super unleaded or real 4 star, run it around for a few miles to get it into the carb and see if it still makes the noise. |

Subject: R5 GTT BRAKE DISCS/PADS Question: HI Wiz! I am considering the following new brake setup for my car and would welcome your words of widom and advice! My car is heavily modified and used 70% on the road and 30% on the track. I have the following in mind... - TAR-OX G88 DISCS WITH EBC GREENSTUFF PADS. - GOODRIDGE STAINLESS BRAKE LINES. - UNSURE AS TO WHICH BRAKE FLUID IS BEST SUITED. I'M NOT TOO KEEN ON BIG BRAKE CONVERSIONS AS THEY ARE HASSLE AT THE DRAG STRIP. CHEERS, VINCENT. Answer: Sounds fine to me. Use Dot 5 if you are willing to change it regularly as it absorbs water or Dot 4 for every day usage. |

Subject: Turbocharger Question: I have been given a RB turbo to test, but on inspection the actuator feed appears to be taken off the compressor housing. Is there any advantage to having this setup on a 5 over the normal actuator setup. Thanks in advance Answer: It means your boost is controlled from the actuator spring pressure only unless you ""T"" into it for adjustable boost. |

Subject: Strange noises part II Question: Ok....checked the engine to see if anything is loose or rattling. Certainly nothing I ( a mechanical numpty) could find there. The car has not had any head work (to the best of my knowledge) and is always run on super unleaded or optimax. There's silicone hoses, a dump valve, and a bleed valve under there (approx. 15 psi). Other than that the engine is pretty standard. Is there anything hard to find that might be rattling? The noise seems to be coming from inside or underneath the engine block itself. Any ideas as to what it might be? I'm getting worried here as I've got to go back to uni next week. If I can't fix it then the cars going to be standing for 2 months. Nooooooo! I call upon your almost infinite wisdom once again cheers. Answer: Try looking from underneath for a loose starter motor shield, exhaust heatshield, exhaust mount or bracket. |

Subject: Adjustable Timing sensor Question: Dear Wiz, I have a 1988 GTT which I belive has had an adjustable timing sensor fitted. Does the adjustable one look any different? If i do have an adjustable sensor fitted how do I adjust the timing to prevent pinking under high loads? Thanks Malcolm.M. Answer: If the sensor is a GT Tuning one then it will have no metal cover and an alloy clamping piece. If it is a home made one then it will look like a standard one maybe without a cover. Just slide the centre section of the sensor in the desired direction to retard the ignition slightly. |

Subject: both pieces??? Question: Hello oh wise one!! is there any restriction in the center section of my exhaust on my 5?? Ive bought a back box but will buying the center piece give me any more poke??? cheers and happy new year craig kerry. Answer: The centre box is not as restrictive as the rear box but is better off removed altogether if you don't mind a little exta noise. |

Subject: loss of power Question: My car is 196bhp at 20psi but lately it is really slow i just had it tuned and it made no difference, now instead of jamming your head to the back of the seat it just about over takes metros. the big power loss is at higher revs and tonight i heared a knocking noise at idle but it wasn't the tappets when i last had the engine out number 4 piston had a little movement side to side. I know i need to replace my other drive shaft but my engine feels like it wants to blow up at 4000rpm rather than being smooth and fast do you know what i mean?? Help (starting to get well pi$$ed off) Answer: If no.4 piston is slapping about then you will be losing power by the bucket load in blowby. The knocking noise could be the piston or bearings on no.4 (or any of the others really) Get a compression check to see if you are losing compression on no.4 and rebuild the engine if need be. |

Subject: Oil in boost pipe! Question: Hi wizzard! My boost pipe seems to be covered in oil. It is the turbo to intercoooler pipe that is the one with the problem. Oil has gushed out of the pipe when I have thrashed the car and run higher boost 12-15 psi. When i had a look inside the pipe I could see thick black oil deposits. I have a k&n breather filter fitted and I have removed the little resirictor out of the breather pipe. The pipe also does not seal properly on the intercooler, would a silicon hose provide a better seal?? Regrds Imran Answer: I expect your turbo is overboosting to compensate for the losses you will be getting through the leaking pipe and has worn the seals. Yes a silicon hose will seal better than an old crusty hose. |

Subject: T3 Turbo Question: I have in my possession a T3 turbo from a Cossie. I'm itching to get it on but need some advice (or names of people who can) get it modified so it will go on. It could also do with a rebuild (as the bearings aren't perfect). People I've spoken to so far say it is too big for a 5 - prove them wrong!!! Answer: A T3 is a bit too large for a 5 unless you don't mind waiting ages for it to boost up! This turbo will be lag city!!!!! There are turbo's out there using T3 compressors but they use smaller exhaust turbines to keep the spin speed up. It is up to you but i would recommend you spend your money on another turbo rather than rebuilding the T3. |

Subject: Original stickers Question: Hi Wiz, Me again. I am looking for the original stickers for a white 5. Cannot find them anywhere. Do you know of anyone who can get them. Alternatively, I heard some companies make stickers to your specification. Where could i get a good copy of them to use as a model. Phil Answer: If Renault cannot supply the stickers then you will have to go to a specialist graphics company. You could try scanning in a decent photo and they may be able to copy that. |

Subject: panels Question: Hello again. Sorry forgot about this last time. My interior panels are severly tired now and need replacing. Are all renault 5 interior panels the same shape for 3 doors (ie speakers and handles in the same place). Are they all made of chip board as I woiuld like some plastic ones which are more solid so I can retrim them myself. Thanks Phil Answer: You should go for a set of plastic trim from a phase one GT if possible but any old panels should be fine. |

Subject: boost gauge Question: hi wiz i just bought a boost gauge and on the instructions for installation it says to run the pipe off the inlet manifold by drilling and tapping a hole or there will be a plugged one already in? is this all necessary or can i do it another way cheers matey!! Answer: You can use a ""T"" piece to break into the Ignition module vacuum line if your gauge has minus and plus readings on it or you can just ""T"" into the pipe from the carb top to the standard gauge for a positive only reading. |

Subject: dipped headlights not working Question: Hi wiz hope you can help me, whenever i switch from sidelights to dipped the headlights turn off, all of the other lights remain on and full beam works fine, could it be the switch connected to the steering column as i could not see any obvious problems with the wiring?thanks. Answer: I presume you have checked the fuse as there is a seperate one for dipped and main beam. If the fuse is ok and you have checked the bulbs are not blown then it is probably the switch gone. |

Subject: Car cuts out Question: Wizard, Just recently when the car is running it will just cut out on me and die...When I try to jump it in 2nd it will back fire. I leave it for a while and then it will start. I could go the rest of the journey with no problems and then it will happen again the next day. What could this be? It has only started happening since the tappets were done. Could something of been knocked when the rocker was taken off etc? Would it have anything to do with the timing sensor lead as Ive had problems with this before and it was fixed by connectors and Im wondering if they have split inside...Please help.. many thanks Iain Answer: I would say you have dislodged the wires in the timing sensor when you did the tappets as this definately sounds electrical. |

Subject: Rear Torsion Bar Question: Happy New Year Wiz! I've just bought some -50mm springs for my Reno, the mechanic I went to see said fitting those would be no problem at all, but adjusting the Torsion bar was a huge job that would take all day and involve stripping everything (brakes, shocky's etc...) and said this would be an expensive job. My mate has a Reno 5 and when he had his done he said it was a peace of p**s. I know a fair bit about car's but not enough to start delving into adjusting the ride height of my car! I plan to take it to my usual mechanic once he's back from holidays but that's 3 weeks away and I'm an impatient bugger! Can you give me some lowdown on the work involved? Oh, and you were spot on about the problem with my Turbo not kickin in, a pipe had come loose! Cheers Tud. Answer: Too make the job easy, soak the torsion bar ends and shock lower bolts in a decent releasing agent like plus gas a day or so in advance. Then just follow the guide in the articles section of the site. |

Subject: Drives like a Skoda!!!! Question: Hi Wiz, My 5 has been fine until this afternoon. I took it out for a drive and it felt very strange. There was not a lot of power but the renault boost gauge was reading normal and my boost gauge plumbed from the ecu line was reading the normal 8-9psi!!! But it felt distinctively lacking in power. I thought my bailey dump valve might have been stuck open but it was still whooshing when changing gear as normal, although i could hear a kind of flapping noise from the engine bay when i was driving it, and there was quite a bit of shaking coming from the steering wheel. At idle it seems fine!!!! I have checked all the spark plugs and they are all sparking, could it be a cracked exhaust manifold as the emissions from the exhaust are very weak????? Thanks Liam. Answer: It could be a manifold or manifold gasket problem. It could also be a plug breaking down at higher revs/heat. Try looking for loose or missing manifold nuts as these have a habit of coming loose. |

Subject: fuel smell Question: i have got a little problem i can smell fuel when i put my foot down and when the car idles it sounds like it is struggling to stay alive. when you change gear the dump valve sounds a bit like a waste gate. any ideas y it is doing it and how to solve it Answer: I expect your dump valve diaphram has split and you can smell fuel fumes leaking from the dump valve. |

Subject: Nitrous Oxide Question: I'm keen on using a T3 based turbo for big high end boost and want to get around this with using Nitrous Oxide to get around the initial lag. Can you give me some advice, or point me in the direction of people who have experience of this. Thanks as always Tim. P.S. It is going on a road legal race car (only goes on the road when driven to the track / strip) Answer: What sort of racing do you want to do? Most forms of motorsport won't allow nitros at all. Nitros is ideal to get over big lag on a T3 but you will have a massive bill for filling the bottle every couple of days! Speak to the nitros kit manufacturers for better advice. |

Subject: Erratic Idle Question: Hi there Mr Wizard sir, any help with this would be appreciated! I suddenly experienced problems with starting. When I did eventually get it going it sounded terrible & would cut out straight away. Eventually it began to start slightly more regularly (& sounded better) but the revs were all over the place, jumping from 900 to 1500 then back down again - anything below 900 & it would cut out, basically at every junction or whenever I put my foot on the clutch. First off was the starting problem so I changed the plugs, dizzy cap & leads. ...Which made almost no difference. Secondly I got a carb service kit to try & rule that out, which again made no difference. So I bought a second hand carb - you guessed it, still no change. Finally I decided it was likely to be fuelling & if it isn't the carb, the likely culprit was the (still original) fuel filter. Again changing it for a new one has made absolutely no difference to the revs. The car will (sometimes) run with the choke constantly out, but every time I put the choke in it cuts out - won't even idle. Adjusting the idle screw doesn't seem to make any difference, the revs are still all over the place. Also when the car is cruising it judders yet when accelerating it's fine. Ever heard of this before & have you got any bright ideas??? Many thanks! Answer: Sounds like a dodgy timing sensor to me. Try renewing it with a known good one to test it out. |

Subject: center exit Question: getting a 12 "" center exit exhaust made and i woz just wondering if the car will need any mods of any kind and i am getting a carisma rear bumper so is it better 2 get the bumper on before the exhaust is done or the exhaust done before the bumper? cheers wiz Answer: When the bumper is fitted then you will have it meshed i presume? It will be easier to line the lot up if you fit the exhaust after the bumper but before the mesh! |

Subject: rear head rests Question: where could i find some head rests,is there any specialised r5 gtt breakers or anything about? and would it possible 2 use the head rest guides like on the front seats? cheers wiz Answer: I expect you could use the parts from the front seats to put headrests in the rear but i don't know if its been done before. Try asking Jamie at Carisma. |

Subject: hesitation Question: I have a problem with a bad hesitation in 2nd gear and upwards. 1st gear is fine I can put as little or as much throttle as I want on, but when I pull 2nd 3rd 4th and 5th at about half throttle the car seems to lose power then suddenly kick the power in. So to get the car to drive properly its either 1/4 throttle or full which is not good for the tyres (wheel spin city). Have you any suggetions what could cause this. I have been told it could be fueling but would appreciate another opinion. Thanks. Answer: I expect the accelerator pump on the carb has seized or the jets blocked. Try spraying the linkage etc with WD40 or something to free it off whilst moving it in and out. If this doesn't work, then try stripping and cleaning/refurbishing the carb. |

Subject: CAMPUS GTT Question: My mate has just purchased a 1.1 campus, I have a GTT shell with bodykit so we are going to put that on.I also have a cylinder head off a GTT, would it go onto the 1.1 block?, if so I want to polish and port it. ANY BODY WANTING A WHITE GTT SHELL(NO INTERIOR AND BUMPERS AND ARCHERS ETC) CAN HAVE IT. IT'S GOT TO GO BY THE 15 OF THIS MONTH. NAN IS GOING MAD FOR ROOM ON DRIVE!!!!! Cheers wizard! Answer: The head may fit the block but i wouldn't bother trying as the compression would be way too low. If you really must, just port the 1.1 head and skim it a little for a few more bhp. |
