Subject: BATTERY TRAY Question: I NOTICED ON THE 5 THAT THERES A BUILT IN BATTERY TRAY WHICH IS UNUSED [ON DRIVERS SIDE] BUT ON THE OTHER SIDE THERES ONE MADE UP AND BOLTED IN I WONDERED IF U KNOW WHY THAT IS SO I COULD MOVE THE BATTERY OVER TO THE DRIVERS SIDE1 THANX DAE Answer: It is to do with weight distribution, putting the battery on the opposite side to the driver to balance the car more. RHD has battery on passenger side LHD has battery on its passenger side which is our drivers side. Car was made in Frog land for LHD therefore ours is an after thought. |

Subject: She canne take no more, captain! Question: Hey, Wizz! I have a '89 5gt which had no perc fan, no overboost protection, no thermostat when I bought it. It still has none of these things and I have since upped the boost and done the carb overhaul thing with bigger jets and strapped the 'cooler. It runs between 16 and 18psi of boost acording to the guage and I have no problems of any kind with it. Do you see any long term problems with the set up as it is now? Cheers for any help.... Answer: I would suggest replacing the thermostat at least for the winter as the car will warm up much faster (good for the heater/demister) and will actually run better as the engine oil etc will get to temperature much quicker and burn off the harmful deposits it acquires along the way. I would also recommend refitting an adjustable overboost protection if you can and set it to say 20psi just in case! Apart from that, happy 5ing! |

Subject: stalling when flooring it ! Question: Hi Wiz, When I put my foot down the car sort of stalls, the rev counter drops but u can still hear the engine running, only slightly, then it stalls, I then have to wait a few minutes before it`ll finally fire up again, it only happens when I put my foot down abit. I heard a noise from the direction of the fuel pump but it has been checked and seems ok. I have tryed putting other ignition modules on aswell and I can hear the relay near it clicking too when I try and start it, so that seems ok aswell. Its refusing to start now and its starting to piss me off, would you be able to shed some light and maybe work a little of your magic on it kind sir, before I resort to pushing it off the end of a cliff. thankyou in advance wiz BATMAN Answer: First things first, forget the cliff, you know you love(and hate) your car! I take it you have enough fuel in the tank and are not running on the reserve tank pump. The main fuel pump should be nearly silent if in good condition so i would consider it as a possible problem if you can hear it really loudly. Also, you could try running a 12volt supply straight to the pump to cut out the relay etc just to make sure that you are getting a good supply of fuel. It may be that you have an intermittant problem which is causing you all this grief. Let me know how you get on. |

Subject: breathers Question: WHATZZ UP! Im building re-building my r5 at the moment and i was wondering whats the best way to modify the breather system? I'm planning to run 30 psi Max boost ,instead of me blowing my dip stick through the bonnet. thanks Dae Answer: If you are getting a lot of crankcase pressure then you must have excess blowby on the rings. You may have less after the rebuild. You could try using a breather filter or two on the standard pipework or bin it all completely and just put the breather into a catch tank. |

Subject: Engine stalling and missfiring when cold. Question: When I start my car first thing in the morning it always fires up first time. But its just started playing up. I can drive the car off fine, but then soon as I push the clutch it stalls. Then when I restart it and hold the accelerator down a little (around 1500-2000rpm) to keep it running, it sounds like its only firing on 3 cylinders. I've ordered some new HT leads to try that out but I'm also running a GrpA carb, so no choke flap.! The car never used to stall when it was cold, its kept in a garage every night so I dont even think theres any damp getting in but I've been over it with the WD40 just to make sure, but now I'm at a loss as to what it could be.?? please help.... Barry Answer: I think your car needs to be set up correctly on the rollers to get the fuelling and ignition right. This will also show up any problems you may have in your systems. |

Subject: strange shreiking noise Question: My 5 has developed a nasty shreiking noise when engaging the clutch in 1st and 2nd especially on hills or when the car is full. At first I thought belt, got that replaced and it still did it. Then the alternator ceased so I thought that may have been causing it, got a new one, no luck, still doing it. The only other thing I can think of is the clutch but I had it looked and they said it was in fair condition. Any ideas as it's really begining to get on my man tits! Answer: I would say it was likely to be a clutch fault, probably the release bearing gone dry. |

Subject: re-setting the o/boost switch Question: hi wiz, im about to fit an in car boost adjuster and would like to set it to a max. of 16 psi but would like to keep the o/boost switch how do i re-set it? it is the type with the small screw in the middle. also what size jets would you recomend? thanks you doing a great job alex Answer: Just turn the screw (in i think) to increase the max boost allowed. You can test it by removing the actuator hose (not recommended but easiest way) As for jets, i expect a standard main with say 90 or 100 air corrector or a slightly bigger main will do the job. Best bet is to get it rolling roaded. |

Subject: running like a tractor Question: hi wiz i have recently brought a 5gt for £100 and it runs like a tractor, the bloke that had it before ran it with no oil for a couple of miles,so could you tell me the likely causes it has done and where to start rebuilding . i know its a big job but any help would good thanx. Answer: Realistically I would say go for a new engine as lack of oil will have damaged most of the internal componants due to heat and metal to metal contact. But the best thing to do is strip the engine completely and check everything. I expect the turbo will have knackered bearings as well just to add to the expense and work. |

Subject: compression Question: Wiz Checking my engine prior to fitting new turbo On compression test all 4 cylinders registered 152 psi Is this ok?- Can't find figures in Haynes man Cheers Keith Answer: Sounds a little high like the head has been skimmed a bit but as long as there is no pinking then it will actually give you more power when off boost compared to a normal car. |

I think Halfords sell a filler that is flexible to a degree but the name escapes my old brain. |

Subject: Wheel arch mod Question: Can you recommend someone in the south west that can modify my arches? I want to go to 17"" but my car is quite low on the back. Answer: Why not follow the fitting guide on this site and do it yourself? It is not as hard as you would think. Also i do not like to recommend people i have not used myself so i cannot help you much on the bodyshop side of things. Any decent place could do it for you. |

Subject: boost gauge Question: Hi wiz,a friend is thinking of buying a 5gtt, he's taken it for a run and said it goes well but is worried about the readings on the boost gauge. When the car is ideling the rev counter is at 900rpm but the gauge is not on zero but showing -10, could you shed some light please, cheers.... Answer: This is normal for a reading taken below the carb, ie from the ecu line. It shows the depression at the engine as well as boost. |

Subject: Whats the best exhaust Question: Hi wiz, am looking at upgrading my 5 with a chip and s/s exhaust. What chip and exhaust combo do you suggest for performance without 4"" noise? Answer: There is no ""chip"" for a 5gt turbo as it has no ecu chip to change, just an ignition module which most people call the ecu. You can up the boost a little (14psi?) and fit a decent exhaust like scorpion, mongoose or one from a tuner. |

Subject: Adjustable suspension Question: hi wizard, just bought my 5 a couple of months ago and the car has been lowered but not professionally. So i'm going to have front and rear adjustable kit fitted. What do you recommend also what do you suggest for stiffening front and rear Answer: AVO do a good kit for the 5 but it can be a little on the hard side for some people. Try the tuners as they seem to be getting them adjusted to their own specs these days. |

Subject: recon my turbo Question: hi wiz how often should you have your turbo reconditioned and how much will it cost? Answer: You only need it reconned if you don't look after it! Change the oil for good quality stuff and run it up and down before boosting will ensure long life. It is a couple of hundred to get a standard recon but you are better off going for a hybrid if you need to change the turbo at all. |

Subject: Track day Question: Hi wiz What tyres do you suggest for occasional track days and hard road use looking for good performance and average wear. These will be fitted on standard 5 wheels Answer: There is not a lot of choice for the standard 13"" wheels but try the Pirelli's or other top names. For occasional track use you could allways get a second set of wheels and get some colway or maxsport remould rally tyres. Bruce Hockley has used them for years on his road/race 5 as they are much softer and grippier than normal tyres. Try mailing him for more details, he may be able to help. |

Subject: erm stalling at idle Question: Hi wizzy! I have just fitted my home made front mounted intercooler and pipework. i removed the dumpvalve and the pipe which goes thru a solinoid to the perc fan housing as i forgot to weld the nessasary pipes onto it. doh! Anyway when taking it for a drive for the first time i noticed its running 1-2 psi more than normall, not a problem! but on the way home (10 min drive) not booting it, it started to stall at junctions. I have had this problem b4 when my idle screw fell out, but this time its still there? I have fitted new plugs and checked they r all sparkin, is it fueling side? no splits r on any of the vacume pipes so its not that, it runs at 2000 rpm and above but badly, except increasing the throttle it doesnt splutter. Could it be swarf left in the intercooler getting stuck in a jet. never took a carb apart u see. please help me. Answer: I would remove the idle jet and check it isn't blocked and then check the rest of the pipework for splits etc. |

Subject: hybrid????? Question: Hi wizz, I bought my 5 a few months ago, and was told it has a hybrid turbo on it, but i have since noticed a garret badge on it, does this mean its standard, or a hybrid in a garret case? ps, is there much differance in a standard turbo and hybrid ( say 0-60 times ) if there both run at same pressure??? cheers! Answer: The garret badge is due to them making the turbo and possibly them modding it too. The only wat to tell if it is a hybrid is to take it off and compare it with a std one. There will be little if any difference at the same boost but the hybrid turbo will do it more reliably |

Subject: Turbo Replacement Question: I've recently purchased a H reg R5GT. I had the car now for about 6 months and its only recently that when i give the car a little boot, i get quite abit of smoke from the exhaust. I was told that my turbo needs replacing, which i believe is correct. Is this right.? I'm looking to change the turbo. Either a standard (£300)or a hybird turbo(£500). Which do you think is best for my car. It runs at 160 BHP @ about 12 psi, but i also have a boost controller where when used pushes the car to about 18 psi. I have a dump valve fitted for your reference. I was told using this will decrease the life of the turbo. Is this right? What the best turbo to get for my cars set up please.? How much power increase will i get if a hybird was fitted.? Look forward to hearing from you. Kind Regards Rory Buttle Answer: I would say go for a hybrid every time if you run more than std boost. A hybrid will not really increase power at the lower boost you are using but at 18psi it will flow much more air than a std turbo and will do it more reliably. You may see a few more horsepower. Try something like the K-Tec 180 turbo (£399) or similar from another tuner. The dump valve will increase life of the turbo as it reduces the backpressure shock waves that can damage turbo blades. |

Subject: Easily Removable Timing Cover? Question: Dear Wizard, Have you ever seen one of these 'easily removable timing covers'- if so what do they look like? Can they be made from a ordinary timing cover? The reason why Im asking is that i have an adjustable cam timing wheel on the ol' Shed, and i really don't wanna keep removing the fackin cover just so i can adjust it, if you see what i mean! many thanks o' wise one ;-) Answer: The cover you are on about is easily made for a man with a shed and golden fingers! Just cut out a hole big enough to access the adjustable timing wheel, and fit a plate to cover the hole. You may need to build up the surrounding metal to get a decent flat surface and you will probably need to use a gasket on the plate as well. Let me know how you get on and maybe you could even do an article on it! |

Subject: door pins Question: i think the door pin in my driver door has bust as the door moves up and down, how hard are these to replace and where can i get new pins from? cheers wiz, dan Answer: Door pins are available from Renault for a couple of quid i think. They are either a straight knock out knock in, or a screw in type. Trouble is, there is usually wear in the hinge as well as the pin so even with new pins you still get some dropping of the door. The way round this is to drill out the holes and fit bigger pins instead. |

Subject: keepin cool Question: how can i keep my 5 cool even although system is checked out ok Answer: I assume your car is running hot on the gauge? (Above 2/3?) Try a low temp radiator switch and low tep thermostat available from any of the tuners. If this doesn't work then try flushing the radiator or replacing it altogether with a copper one. |

Subject: Extra Dialage Question: I want to get some dials to fit into the centre vents, 3 x 52mm showing boost pressure, oil pressure and volts but don't know how to plumb them in! Where do the hoses go to get accurate readings for all 3 gauges? Answer: If you buy the gauges from a decent supplier you will get full fitting instructions with them! The boost gauge needs to go above the carb (carb top?) for boost only or below the carb (Ecu line) for boost pressure and manifold depression. The Oil pressure gauge needs to connect to either a sender provided or the standard sender on the front of the engine. The voltmeter needs to go preferably to an ignition switched 12v positive source. |
