Subject: HEAD GASKET??? Question: Hello Wizard,My problem is that i seem to have a little of that lovely goo under the oil filler cap, which i believe is a classic sign of head gasket failure, but i don't seem to have any of the other signs normally associated with this problem such as a loss of power, pressurised coolant, oil in coolant, white smoking, etc.I wondered if this can be caused as a result of crap crankcase breathing,as i know some old CVH engines could be prone to this.Could this be possible?,or am i just thinking wishfully?.If this is the case, what is the acid test for head gasket failure?,is it compression testing? Thank you in advance,Chef. Answer: I would recommend a compression test to see if the gassket has gone but i expect it is just condensation. If the compression check is ok then try warming up the car with a good long run, dropping the oil and filter and putting fresh in. After this you will need to remove and clean out the breather system to get rid of the gunge you already have. |

Subject: Squealing Noise Question: Hi Wiz, my alternator belt came off today-so i went to good old halfords and bought a new one. I fitted it and now i have a squealing noise which is louder at idle but is still there when u accelerate. I have put wd40 on the belt and this didnt help at all!!! Any ideas?? cheers Liam Answer: First of all you shouldn't use WD40 or any oil on your belt as it will make it slip or worse perish. You will have to either put up with the noise or shell out for a genuine solid type belt which will not sqeal like the toothed type. |

Subject: slipping clutch Question: Hi Wiz I am fearing the worst here, but I think my clutch is on the way out. When I floor it in 3rd, 4th or 5th the revs rise from around 2500 to 3500 quickly without the kick of acceleration, it then drops about 500 revs when I assume the clutch bites, it then accelerates as normal. This only happens in gear, it dosen't happen when I accelerate hard from 1st to 5th. Is it the clutch, if it is, is it adjustable or will it need replacing. It is a standard clutch on a standard car, no engine mods as yet. John Dolan Answer: It sounds to me like it is on its way out. Try getting a heavy duty R5 clutch/ volvo 440 turbo clutch as a replacement. Should cost about £60-80 from your local parts place. |

Subject: Carb Jets Question: Hello wiz I wonder if you could give me some idea of what jets to run on the following engine spec Group A head gasket and bolts Dump valve Strapped and flowed intercooler Cup actuator circuit, in-car bleed valve and boost gauge scorpion exhaust Jr air filter Alloy carb top I want to run 16PSI boost with my standard turbo, any ideas I will also get it set up at the rolling road Answer: I would say that either a standard main jet with a smaller air corrector (90-100) or maybe a 130 main with the same air corrector. This should provide enough top end fuel without causing overfuelling too badly at the bottom end. |

Subject: clutch pedal Question: wizard, my clutch cable snapped at about 6 months ago, it snapped at the top of the pedal i fitted a new cable it works fine but the pedal sits really high?? any idea why?? also my clutch pedal feels different to what it used to because yesterday a metal spring clip fell of, the clip go' s on the end of the rod which holds the clutch pedal on but i cant figure out how this clip goes on???? ive heard that renault do a modified clutch pedal what do these do and are they hard to fit?? cheers for your help, lee Answer: The modified clutch pedal is required for use with the genuine cables as Renault no longer sell the older type cable. It has a different quadrant on it i believe and is a different colour to the standard item. It is fairly straight forward to fit. |

Subject: Fuel gauge???? Question: hi wizard, can you help me???? my fuel gauge is flickering and jumping up and down when i am driving. sometimes it gives a reading, then it just sits on the bottom. how can i fix it?? also my driver side lock won't lock on central locking any ideas of what the problem is cheers mate Answer: The fuel gauge could be a bad connection, a dodgy gauge or a bad earth problem. Try removing the dash and checking the connection on the rear. As for the lock, i expect it needs adjusting or lubricating on the mechanism. Try removing the door panel and spraying the workings with WD40 or similar. |

Subject: Boost Gauge Question: What would be the best thing to wire the gauge into for the lighting on it and how is this done...???? Answer: It all depends on where you are mounting the gauge. The best place to take the wiring from is the side light circuit positive and an earth. If you are fitting the gauge where the clock was then you can tap into the normal wiring loom for the clock to get the illumination and earth from. |

Subject: Me Clutch Again Question: Thanks for the reply Wiz. I tried to put the clip back on, but it didnt work. I also have tried adjusting the pedals self adjuster. I was clicking it up towards the top of the pedal, as soon as I reconected it all, it just clicked back down again. All I get now when I try to engage a gear is a load of grinding and if I try to select first or second the car actually moves foward. Should I just give up and have a new clutch fitted. I had the RAC out this morning and he thinks that it could be the clutch aswell. Answer: It does sound that way i am afraid. You could always get a local tuner or mobile tuner to check it for you first though. |

Subject: Pinking Sensor Connection Question: I have managed to get a pinking sensor from one of the people on the sales and wants board. The sensor has a round plug with three pins, i have a renix 209 ecu. Can you tell me which terminals the anti-pink sensor should be connected to? Thanks in advance Answer: You will also need the extension wire that runs from your round 3 pin plug to the flat 3 pin plug on the renix unit. This will enable you to plug it straight in. |

Subject: Wet Patch Question: Hi, Oil was leaking out of my sump plug,so, because an oil change was due, i thought a new compresable washer and oil filter etc would do the trick. But 'no' it is still leaking from the sump-even more than before!!!! Any clues Wiz? Answer: I expect the sump is slightly bent out of shape or the threads in the plug hole are worn. Try fitting a new plug and washer with some PTFE tape around the threads to make a better seal. |

Subject: oil pressure Question: help me wiz my oil pressure gauge seems to be too high around 5.5-6 could you suggest anything that could be causing this and any damage it could do, could the turbo be causing this its just i dont appear to be burning any oil. Also what will happen if my timing chain was to snap, i have heard all sorts of wierd and wonderful rumors from the blokes at work!!!! Answer: It could be that your oil level is too high, your pump is uprated, your pressure regulator is set wrong or faulty or just that the gauge is reading too high! If you are not loosing any oil then i wouldn't worry about it. As for your timing chain, i have never heard of one breaking but it is possible. It is more likely to rattle which indicates it has stretched a bit or the tensioner is worn. If you are worried get a new chain fitted, they are not expensive. |

Subject: RENAULT 5 ON UNLEADED Question: Ive just joined the r5 club so uve proberley been asked this alot! ive got an 86 model running on LRP can i use unleaded or will i have to get hardend valve seats thanx DAE Answer: You can use unleaded but you may suffer from pinking. Use either super unleaded or the new optimax fuel unless you have and adjustable timing sensor. If you do then you could retard the ignition slightly and use normal unleaded. |

Subject: Pipe on top of the rad Question: Hi wiz, what is the long black hose that sits ontop of the radiator. Its got a white mesh thing on the end. And what does this hose do??? cheers wiz Answer: A black pipe with a white mesh bit would suggest a breather. There are two similar ones. One from the gearbox top and the other from the air horn compressor but neither normally sit on the radiator, in fact nothing normally sits on the radiator! |

Subject: Please help Question: Thanks for all the help you have given in the past, i couldn't have got this far with out u. So time for some more. 1 I have a noise from the front wheels, how do i find out if it's the bearings or the drive shaft? 2 I have fitted a new head and have done a compression test and the result were good, but i'm getting a lot of smoke from the tail pipe as the turbo spins up, i have checked for oil in the intercooler and it's fine, any ideas? 3 Why cant i find a website for carisma Thanks for all your help and no doubt i'll speak to you again soon, Ben Answer: 1. Jack up the car and waggle the wheels from the top and bottom to see if it is the bearing and grab the driveshaft and waggle. Too much movement in either will be a dead give away! 2. If you have the standard breather system, then remove the pipe that goes into the ""U"" bend before the turbo/ after the filter. This will stop any oil from the breather system getting put back through the engine. You will need to put the end of the pipe into a catch tank or just fit it with a little breather filter. 3. I don't think they have one! |

Subject: wastegate problem Question: Hi wiz man Can you help (phsII)? Recently I changed over to the single actuator port mod, after a few weeks I decided to change back to the original actuator system, as I didnt think much to it ! After getting everything piped back in correctly, I have an overboost problem ? the wastegate has not been re-adjusted and the diaphram is ok! Is the small restricter on the port from the carb realy important ? as I think mine is missing Also when you buy an ally carb top, are the port holes manufactured so as that a restricter is not needed ? Thanx loads Kingscott (The fidddle master) Answer: You need the restrictor to limit the max boost otherwise the actuator see's the same boost on both sides. As far as i know the alloy carb tops come with whatever ports you need, just ask the tuner when you buy one. |

Subject: My idle changes when i put my foot on the brake, it goes up Question: is this normal, i ruled out electrical fault due to disconnecting the brake light, could it be a faulty one way valve on the manifold for the brake servo ?? Answer: I expect you have a leak in the pipe between the manifold and servo but it could well be the one way valve on the manifold or the plastic valve on the servo. |

Subject: Liners Question: Hi Wiz I had the head taken off my car it was losing massive amounts of water out the exhaust the headgasket didnt look like it was leaking the head has been pressure tested and its ok the is no water in the oil, the head bolts werent all that tight to undo any ideas??? Cheers JP Answer: I expect the head is a little warped and it is leaking past the gasket if the bolts were loose. On the other hand, you may have a liner split or have a bad seal on one of them. |

Subject: Driveshafts Question: Wiz whats the best way to tell if your driveshafts are on the way out cos at the mo i have a noisy vibration comin from the wheels and i can feel the vibration through the clutch pedal it seems to be worse when the wheels go left and then stop as they come back to straight cheers richy Answer: Yup that sounds like a worn driveshaft. Try jacking the car up and waggling the shafts to see how much movement there is up and down. There shouldn't be much at all. |

Subject: clutch?? Question: wiz, which way would you choose to do a clutch, engine in, or out?? Which method is easiest?? Cheers flower!! Answer: I usually take the engine out but i have done it with the box out as well. It depends on how many problems you have with undoing the driveshafts etc as to which way to go. You could allways just take the lot out and mod it to heaven while you are there. (its only money!!!) |

Subject: Air filter Question: hi wiz, sorry to bother you again just wanted to know what all the hoses are coming off the air filter are??/ i know one is a cold air supply and one goes to the compressor on the turbo but what is the other??? iam thinking of getting a new air filter any recomendations? Answer: There is a hot air feed from below/behind the airbox for cold start and winter use. I would recommend a good quality cone filter with extra cold air feed (summer only) with a heatshield between the turbo and filter to prevent hot air getting sucked in and reducing power. |

Subject: ticking over like a tractor Question: having recently just got my car back a tuners with a new fairly high spec engine,i have done so far 500 miles (need to do at least 1500 miles to run in ive been told) the car out of the blue when i started her up the next day sounded like it was running on 3 cylinders! i've checked all the leads and plugs can't find a problem i also have a fuel injectorkit fitted but this is'nt yet set up because i'm only running 10psi and keeping the revs below 4000rpm,please could u shed some light on any possibilties as i can't drive the car at present back to the tuners and i'm not with any recovery service! Answer: Replace the plugs and leads one at a time with a known good one, even if they are standard to definately rule them out. If that doesn't work, try disconnecting the fuel injector supply just in case it is flooding one cylinder and try a compression check to rule out any mechanical leaks. Get back to me if you need to. Join a recovery service! (Just in case, you know how tempremental the 5 can be!) |

Subject: Can Question: I have had a humming noise coming form the front left wheel. I got the wheel bearing changed which was knackered, and the drive shaft also gone. But I am still getting the homing noise from the front left I THINK. The nosie gets louder then I turn LEFT, could it be the right wheel bearing? Also. How much would it cost to replace the fuel line which runs from the back to the front of the car? My car is doing my head in. Please help Adam. Answer: The noise getting worse on left hand bends would suggest a problem on the right hand side so get it looked at. Also if one wheel bearing has gone then the other can't be far away unless it has been changed recently. I don't know how much the pipe will cost but if you get it made rather than buying it from Renault then you will save loads of money. It will also depend on whether you need new ends on the pipe as to the final cost. Hang in there, the 5 is a wonderfull thing when its sorted! |

Subject: dodgy servo ?? Question: should the servo constantly suck air when the brake pedal is depressed ??? or only enough to push the servo forward ? as mine does it constantly and i thought it could be ralated to my idle problem. Creating an air leak when the pedal is depressed Cheers again wiz Answer: The servo should be a sealed circuit as it works on a vaccuum and should not ""suck air."" I would take a closer look at it for splits or faulty one way valves. |
