Subject: Termite Mesh Question: Wiz Whats the best way to attach termite mesh to the back of a GT Tuning open grille, bearing in mind that the actual surface area for contact is just a thin lip around the hole. 'No more nails' has been suggested a few times, will this be good enough to contact to the small area? cheers Chris Answer: No more nails is a good choice or you could use fibreglass or filler to do the same job. |

Subject: ENGINE TUNING Question: I'm the lad with the Monaco, the clutch is dead so i have decided to take the engine and box out.i have full access to a garge and ramp so it shouldn't be a problem. While the engine is out I want to replace the oil pump gaskets and sump gaskets and also the engine mounts,as well as a clutch.Could u recommend a decent clutch price. so far i have been qouted £120 from my local reno dealers.I also have a 1.7 cyl head,I thought about gettin it skimmed polished and ported and then fitting a high lift cam on, and some bigger carbs. How much power increase would i get from this?. Would bigger valves help as well?. Once this is done i want to get it set up on the rolling road. Any idea's advice would be great.. Answer: Clutch shold be the volvo 440 turbo one as it is heavy duty. Should get one for about £60 from local parts place. Doing the head and cam should release some decent power but it depends on spec as to how much. 20-30 bhp should be possible. Big valves may help but may be expensive. |

Subject: Fuel Pump Question: Wizard - I dont suppose you know the Part Number for the High flow Bosch fuel pump, or any type of high flow fiel pump sold by the 5 Tuners do you ? Or are they just standard copies that have a higher flow rate and finally - do they come with the necessary fittings etc to bolt straight on ? Many thanks - Rikx Answer: I do not know the part number for the pump, try asking the tuners! They do bolt straight on, i can tell you that much! |

Subject: Drive shaft Question: How much ruffly is a new rubber bit that goes round the drive shaft on the passenger side nearest the engine !!! Have you got any tips on engine removal and refit and while im doing it what I should check or replace!!! Cheers Wiz Answer: Try asking GSF (Formally known as Andyspares) for prices and availability. Number is in the contacts section. Hire an engine hoist to help remove the engine. About £20 per day. Check or replace the clutch while you have it out and examine all pipes and connection for wear or damage, replacing as required. |

Subject: Which Ones Question: Hi Wiz Hope you can help me i was looking at the front of my car tonite and found that the passenger side brake disc had started to crack. I want to replace the discs but with which one should i go for x drilled, grooved or combination ones, and is there any difference in performance. plus i want new pads aswell and recomendations ta JP Answer: Its all down to personal choice as all will improve braking abilities. If you have 15"" wheels then try a big brake conversion as these are well worth the money. I recommend EBC Greenstuff pads for road and occasional trackday action, but these are just my personal favourite. |

Subject: Starter motor wont turn Question: I recently changed the starter motor on my GTT cos the old one stopped working, when you turned the key it was just dead, I had checked all the connections etc prior to changing it, and now after 2 weeks the new ones doing it too!!!!! sometimes it will turn ok, and other times I get that clicking noise then other times its just dead, the batterys new so theres no problems there, and the new starter was a reconditioned unit and it makes no difference if the engines hot or cold please help!!!! cant handle pushing it anymore!!!!!! Answer: Sounds to me like a dodgy connection or a dodgy rebuild! Try cleaning the connectors again and fit star washers to get a better contact. Clean the alternator and battery terminals too. If all this fails, send it back under its warrenty. |

Subject: tracking and camber Question: i'm doin the tracking and setting the camber soon. the car has been lowered alot and has 15 inch wheels on with 195/50 tyres on. the front has 5mm spacers and the rear has 3mm on. when i set the track and camber up do i set it to the original spec?. at the moment the wheels are facing in at the top. Is this negative camber? the front has spax on and there is adjustment there... i think?. Do u know any setting etc. i.e positive camber negative etc?? By the way it's the monaco 5 if that matters.. cheers Answer: A little negative camber is a good thing for handling and camber correctors are available on the market for heavily lowered cars. Set tracking to std with minimum tolerances. |

Subject: Very Light Steering problem Question: I have a Black E-Reg GT, problem is that when the car is at a stand still, the steering is fairly lose in either direction. When the car is moving above 30mph the steering feels very unresponsive in both directions, still drivable though, but feels unsafe. The steering column feels secure though at first inspection. Any idea what this could be? Answer: I would get all the individual steering componants inspected by a professional (MOT?) inspector and replace as neccessary. It could be anything from a worn track rod end, to a worn steering rack to the universal joints in the steering column. |

Subject: back fire Question: My 5 idles good and drives well at low speed with no boost but when i accelerate and the boost comes in the turbo will spin but the car goes know where. After a few seconds it will back fire, there will be some smoke then but at no other time. When it back fires the rev gauge drops to nothing but then if you take you foot off the car will drive normally. I have had the carb cleaned and am hoping that you have the answers. Could it be the fuel regulator ? Thanks Answer: I suppose it could be the fuel regulator but i have never known one to go! It is more likely a leaking or split pipe going from the boost circuit to the regulator. This i have seen a few times. Try also checking the overboost switch isn't faulty by removing the wires to it. (it is in the short turbo boost hose) |

Subject: sooty Question: Hi wiz I have a problem with constant sooty spark plugs. I have to clean them every couple of weeks cos it starts running on 3 or less cylinders, then its usually fine after they are cleaned. Until now, it is still running on 3 cylinders even tho ive cleaned them and the revs needle started going a bit mental. Do you have any idea wot it could be cos im stumped. I am now on my 3rd carb due to being told I needed another one alot and the CO2 is set at 2. hope you can help wiz cos I am really missing driving the little beast :) cheers, BATMAN Answer: Could be that you have too big a main jet. (this is very common on the 5) or You may need new plug leads or plugs as they may not be producing a good enough spark. |

Subject: speedo on the blink Question: My speedo recently started to work and then not work. Now it has gone completely dead and refuses to work. I removed the clock and the contacts were in good condition and well connected. So i had a look at the sender in the engine bay and the wires were all in good condition and the conections were good. So i ask is there another place to look? does the sender get its signal from another postion that i am un aware of. Cheer soapy Answer: The sender is on the gearbox near the drivers side driveshaft but there is a connection which is renowned to go wrong located next to the standard airbox. It has grey leads with a black plug about 1/2 to 3/4 inch in diameter. |

Subject: Paint colour Question: wiz, I have a Silver GTX (G reg). Which number in the engine bay is the paint colour for that silver? Cheers Chris Answer: Look near the drivers side suspension turret in the engine bay, on the bulkhead. There is a silver plate with a few sets of numbers and letters. The paint code is usually a lone 3 figure number. |

If not then any AVO dealer can get the shock returned and rebuilt. |

Subject: More Traction Question: Please help me Mr Wizard! I need more traction from my 11 turbo when pulling away! I have heard about ""locking the diff"" What is the diff? where do I find it? and how do I lock it? When its locked will I be able to unlock it? Will this affect driveability? and how much does it cost? is it a good idea? also I have been told my baulk ring is no good (ooh err) whats that?? Answer: To ""Lock the Diff"" (also known as the differential gears) in the gearbox you have to weld it up so that it no longer allows different driveshaft speeds. This is fine and dandy for off road or straight line performance but makes the car almost undrivable on the road. A better bet for road use is a ""limited slip diff"" (also known as an LSD, about £900) but these also make it harder to turn corners if set too high. If your baulk rings in the gearbox are worn then it becomes harder to get into gear without exactly matched gear speeds. I think a replacement or rebuilt gearbox with LSD may be what you are after but expect to pay at least £1000 for a new one! I hope this answers all your questions, if not don't hesitate to ask me more! |

Subject: What is THAT!! Question: Wiz What is that thing that sits in the passenger wing behind the header tank it has two pipes coming from it and one of them goes to a little filter under the main air filter, what is it, what does it do, there is nothing in the Haynes about it and i want to know I have put it back in correctly if you know how Tell me please!!! Cheers P.s. Wiz how fast is your car?? I've beeen dying to know Answer: It is the compressor for the standard air horn. The pipe with the filter is the inlet, the pipe to the horn is obviously the outlet. If you fit them the wrong way round it will either make a funny noise or not work at all. |

Subject: Thermostat switch Question: Is is still possible to get the plug that plugs into the Fan thermostat switch? The car had it originaly, but when it knackered I cut it off. The fan has been irratic for the last year as the wires connecting direct are not too reliable. Do Renault still stock these??? Chris Answer: Your best bet is to contact Renault as I am not sure if they do them seperately or only as a part of the wiring loom. |

Subject: Monster clutch Question: Thanx for the info on the diff thing Mr Wizard! Perhaps you could answer me something else! What would be a good clutch to use with good road manners and capable of holding 400bhp (yes thats 400bhp)? as nobody seems to be able to tell me! They reckon you can't get 400bhp from this engine! What do you think?? Answer: Theoretically 400bhp is possible, but even if you had that much power you wouldn't be able to measure it unless the engine was fitted to a dynomometer. As for the clutch, some people think ceramic paddle clutches will take that sort of power, but they would chew the standard flywheel in a matter of seconds and have poor road manners. You could try getting a flywheel machined out of a higher spec material to prevent this happening, but it would be very expensive due to the intricate design for the timing pick up etc. Some race spec Gordini's were capable of producing over 400bhp, but they have a different flywheel and clutch assembly to the GTT. |

Subject: seat bolsters Question: howdy wizz do you know is it possible to buy replacement foam bolster inserts for the gtt if so do you know where from I am absolutely certain I have seen these addvertised in REVS car mag for around £70 a pair but that was a while ago ..cheers Answer: Yes you can buy replacement seat bolsters and they are about £70 (+ vat?) from GT Tuning. Don't know if you can get them from anywhere else so try phoning around the tuners or Renault. It may be a better idea to just buy new seats from someone who has replaced them with buckets, up to you! |

Subject: rebuild Question: Dear wizzard, I am about to embark on a full engine rebuild. The brief i have set myself is to replace all moving parts so at the end ive got a brand new engine. My problem concerns the crankshaft and whether or not i should replace it with a new one. Having spoken to renault it appears a new one is a budget busting £455+vat. What i wanted to know is, can my existing crank be reground and matched with oversize bearings, and will the result of this be as effective as purchasing a new one and standard sized bearings? Also it says in my haynes manual that the gudgeon pins need special tooling to seperate them from piston/conrod is this the case and if so would i be best advised to replace the con rods with the new pistons/pins? Also any useful tips on assembly would be greatfully appreciated Cheers Bryn Answer: Your best bet for an engine rebuild is go get the crank reground and get the whole bottom end lightenend and balanced. This can be done for less than £100 and is better as the crank will be like new but improved!! As for the con rods, you have to heat them or use a press to remove the pin so is best left to the the engine remanufacturer that does the crank! New pistons, gudgeon pins, liners and liner seals are a must and are available as a set for about £300. While you have the engine apart, why not get some headwork done and maybe a cam? Replace all seal, gaskets, bearings and timingchain/tensioner while you have it all apart. I would also recommend painting the block and all the brackets etc as it looks better and holds back rust etc. |

Subject: dont sound good to me Question: Having changed the head, turbo and carb on my 5 from that of a older year, but with less milage, i am having a few problems. The engine fire's up and the car can be driven (not too far) but it sounds like a taxi. Isn't it possible someone nicked my engine and dropped a diesel in over night???????? If you can help please do, the wife is telling me to sell it know because i spend more time with the car than with her. Thanks for your help, Ben Answer: I am assuming you have correctly set the tappets as these can make it sound like a diesel. I hope you didn't drop anything into the bores or the manifolds when changing them. Do a compression check to see if the valves are sealing. |

Subject: Not Very Horny! Question: Ey up Wizzy me old Mukka roo. My horn (ooo-er) on the 5 has never been particularly good. I once took the 'barrell' off the front wing and managed to get a bit of WD40 in to it. It improved for a week or so then obviously 'dried out' even though i drenched it. Also, when the main beam and especially foglamps are on it basically fails to work unless you press it for about 5-6 second then is very weak. What do you think the problem is? IS there something to do with the horn behind the front bumper sumwhere... if so what is it and if i clean it will that help? Thanks Steve Answer: The horn on the 5 is notoriously poor in its performance. You may have dodgy electrical connections on the compressor (behind the header tank) or elsewhere in the system. or It may be that the horn or compressor is seizing up and requires renewal or refurbishment. |

Subject: Rear Bumper Question: Wiz I want to remove my rear bumper, ive had a look round it looks a nightmare. Any tips on how i can remove it ??? Thanks Kingscott Answer: Unscrew the two side and two bottom mounting bolts (10mm?) and withdraw the bumper from the car. It's that simple! (OK you may need to jack it up or remove the rear wheels for access but that is dependant on your car.) |

Subject: perc fan Question: Hello Wiz! I just bought one of these dodgy R5 GTT's and I have a question about the perc fan. Should it always come on after the engine is switched off or just when there is need? Also, is it supposed to come on during driving, if needed? Answer: The perc fan is on its own circuit and will run at any time it is needed! If it doesn't come on at all, then you should start to worry. |

Subject: Turbo Query Question: Hi there, I currently have a standard turbo running at 18psi and I have noticed signs of wear on the turbo. Is it worth buying a Stage 1 Hybrid Turbo or should I stick to the standard one? Would I notice any difference with a Hybrid turbo, seeing as it is already running at 18psi? Cheers for your advice. Answer: A hybrid with a 360 degree bearing and greater flow capability, will be more capable of sustaining the prolonged use of 18psi. This is very close to the limit of the standard turbo and it wears out very quickly at this sort of boost. |

Subject: Extra van torsion bars Question: Hi. I've got saggy bars at the mo and i've got seventeens on. I also fitted AVO's but i know where there are some extra diesel torsion bars which i've seen you say fit. I understand this would sort my prob as they are a heavier rating. The only thing that worries me is i drive a commercial for work and i know you can get different weight ratings on vans. My mate tells me there were two weights for the van and that the heaviest won't fit. Is there a way of telling which is which as the rating plate on the van has gone and i dont want to give my robbin scrappy 40 quid for them not to fit. Ta v mucho. Answer: I was told by a Renault parts man that the bars fit but he neglected to say there were two sorts. Are they just weight differences or year of manufacture? Try measuring the diameter of the bars on the van and compare them to the 5. If they are similar then try them! Better than paying £350 for a set of new bars. Also try speaking to Prima racing as i hear they do ""Uprated"" bars and they may let some info slip. |

Subject: Still not horny Question: Ok Wiz, ta for that. But why does it struggle even more when the fogs are on? And is there sumthing to do with the horn behind the front bumper? Answer: Sounds like the current drain from the fogs means the current is unavailable for the horn. It draws a large amount of ampage even when it works properly so will be affected by drains from elsewhere. The horn ""Snail"" is affected by water and dirt ingress due to its position behind the bumper. |
