Question:
Hello sorry to bother you again oh great one. I want to renew the ends on the turbo oil return hose as they are rubber and don't look to good, can I use silacone water hoses on the ends, As I have some spare ones? Or do they need to be oil rated? If so what would you recommend?

Answer:
they are supposed to oil resistant.... however I have personally just used water hose on them and they have lasted just as long as a 'special' hose....

Just failed test on rear brakes inc handbrake especially drivers side.
no leaks from caliper seals and all slides and pistons moving freely(manually)
I have managed to get passenger side to work better but o/s is very poor
Any ideas?

Answer:
have you tried winding the piston in then pushing it out a few times? if not, you may be able to get a rebuild kit for it, or its gonna be a new caliper time.

Subject: Rear Toe

Question:
Hi there! I recently had my car tracked and was told the tracking is out on rear left. - 0.46' The right side is okay - 0.16'. Total toe = 102' My Renault mechanic said some late R5's came with adjustable rears to tweak toe but not all. Is this true and if so, which cars? If not, any suggestions to get toe and camber straight? I'm thinking of getting some rear camber adjusters. The front top mounts - left is black and right gold? Are the adjustable top mounts kinda diamond shaped and universal? Apologise for all the questions ;)

Answer:
Vinny me ol' mukka, from memory the rear stub axle is pushed into the trailing arm - not allowing any adjustment. unless you start heating up the stub axle and bending it with a long bar you may have to consider a replacement trailing arm. the fronts generally have moveable slots, but beware, some require you to chop out the OE strut tower tops - ie cut out the round hole.

Is their a thermo switch or wire for a switch that would make it conk out. Help give me answers please.

Answer:
Hi,

The wizard does seem to be away. However I received your General Enquiry Contact Form and have popped in here to see if I can be of assistance.

There is an electric module that send power to the fuel pump. It located near the fuses. There is an article in the articles section about it.

Can't be sure of course, but if there no power at the pump that one thing to look at.

There were some new fuel pump relay modules for sale from the RTOC shop although the existing ones can sometimes be repaired.

You could ask in the members section of the forum and see if anyone has any other suggestions.

Cheers,

Subject: T25 turbo

Question:
Hi I've just bought a rover tomcat t25 turbo sending it away to be rebuilt and having a 360 thrust bearing fitted and billet compressor wheel upgrade... Well that's what's been recommended to me is there anything else I have to change before I send it off.. What's this 0.96 a/r rear stuff ?? I don't quite get it and Will it fit straight on my 5 also having a down pipe made cheers rich

Answer:
Hi, The rover T25 tomcat is a pretty much bolt on unit for the R5 GTT with it's T2 style manifold flange. Replacing the bearing with a 360 bearing will allow you to have more boost reliably. To fit the Tomcat You will need to rotate the compressor housing, the core so the oil feed is facing upwards and the rear housing will also need rotating. If you are having a professional company rebuild be worth asking them to leave the bolts slightly loose so you can rotate housing easily. The A/R size on rear housing basically relates to flow and without going into to much detail the larger the rear housing the laggier the turbo, the smaller the rear the more punchier the turbo is but smaller will run out of puff so to speak soon.
You need to get the correct sizes for your setup. The tomcat turbo comes with a .49 rear which is pretty well suited to the R5 not to laggy and not to small they are able to flow nicely for around 200bhp with additional mod's to setup.

Subject: Clio gearbox

Question:
Hi wiz I just fitted corsa power steering to my track car just to get wiring done now very easy conversion to do the reason I fitted it I'm going to fit a lsd do the clio 182and197 jc5 gearbox fit the cij I can buy a lsd for her own jb3 box I hear it won't be strong enough what your advice on the best way forward I won't be using any kind of speedo cheers tommy

Answer:
Hi, What Sort of power is your C1J currently @ or going to be running?
Fitting an LSD to the JB3 eliminates the original issue of the C clip failing due to excessive power, or general abuse from hard driving. The 172 phase 2 cup car's and 182's have a bolt in diff and are considered to be more reliable due to the bolted in diff's. But then if you are fitting an LSD to the JB3 you are eliminating the failure of the C Clip. It's really all down to the ratio's you require for the track and the age and condition of the box you have. I have seen 300 BHP C1J's use the std JB3 box with a quaiffe diff and suffer no issue's.

Subject: Revs increase well then stagnate and then recover?

Question:
I recently bought a 5GT Turbo which was running OK but clearly needed tuning. Following tuning it runs much better but there is a distinct reduction in acceleration as the revs pass 3000. From 1000 up to 3000 there is a constant rate of increase then at 3000 there is a slowing of the rate of increase before the initial rate returns from about 3500 up to 4500. The turbo boost needle is almost at max which seems higher than my previous car. Grateful for any advice.

Answer:
Hi, Firstly you mention tuning? this tells me the carb has been fettled with recently? what was done and what is the spec of the carb now? was the carb tuned using your engine and a wideband AFR setup?? What happens after a carb is fettled you may end up with bit's of swarf within the carb and it may need a flush through with some carb cleaner to flush any small blockages up.
Also have you changed the fuel filter recently?
Have you got an afr in the car what was it doing when you noticed the problem?
Was this issue present prior to the tuning?

Subject: Initial Carb Setup

Question:
How to get a starting point on the carb mixture air and fuel adjustment eg 3 turns on air and 1 turn on fuel just rebuilt carb with standard jetting any ideas would be great cheers

Answer:
Rule of thumb is adjust the mixture screw on the carb base so it's fully in (But not to tight as you don't want to snap it in the carb base) then slowly undo the mixture as you say 3 & 1/2 turns, this should get you near the correct mixture for idle. You may need to increase the carb idle screw this is also on the carb base (Flathead screw). Do you have an AFR gauge in the car to assist you so you can see what it's doing? or you can listen to the note of the engine to see where it sits comfortably.

Question:
What is the correct aei for phase 1.5 is it 208 or 209

Answer:
Being a crossover model it could have either as Renault were using up the stock of the Phase 1 part's . Ideally if your looking for a replacement you want to look for a 209 d model which is the last model done with a slightly better ignition curve within the module

Hello my gearbox is weeping from the end casing between the front and the lower end casing fixing bolts, I tried replacing the rubber gasket with a new one but it didn't cure it,are the end casings prone to warping any tips on how to cure the weep thank you James.

Answer:
The gaskets on the 5th gear end casing if not seated correctly do pinch up and leak, you could attempt to remove it again and put a bead of sealant around it aswell as the gasket and this should do the trick for you

Hi Tom, What you really want is a one piece downpipe which has the elbow built in.

Fellow RTOC member Matty made a couple for the club recently, I would suggest contacting him for a one piece

Hi wizard,

Hope your good.

Just wanted to know if Evans waterless coolant is safe to use on
Renault 5 gt turbo engine.

Thinking of using this product.

Hope you can advise me on this.

Many thanks.

Answer:
Yes it is perfectly fine to use, mixed reviews on if its worth while over the normal coolant though. For cost wise nothing wrong with the normal Renault Type D coolant it is more than up to the job. If you have an overheating issue you have other issue's in the coolant system that need to be looked at.

Also what are you afr's at idle?

Subject: Gaz springs

Question:
Iv brought a gaz coilover kit from Cgb
They came with a small black spring on top of the blue ones do I need to use that bit if I'm lowering it? Or can I do away with it?

Answer:
The small spring's are spacer ring's so when the car is on the MOT ramps and raised it takes up the gap between the original spring's and allow's it to pass the MOT. You can run without them but if the spring gap is loose when wheels of the ground then it's a MOT failure.

Subject: Dropping the back torsion bar

Question:
I'm about to attempt to lower the rear of the Renault .

Is there any tool to take the bit from the torsion bar out?
Iv seen people using home made things not sure on them what's the best and safest way to attempt it.

Answer:
Firstly to take the torsion bar out I would WD40 up the outer and inner splines a few times for a few day's prior to attempting to remove the bar's allow the WDO40 to penetrate.

Slide hammer is always good. As you say some peeps like to use an old gearbox bolt, a larger socket that will allow the torsion bar to slide into it and a bolt so you are basically turning the bolt in which will pull the shaft out into the socket eventually, does work but the main thing is to Un-seize the bar's first.

10/60 is quite a thick oil from cold on a c1j if your not tracking the car every day. I would use a 10/40 oil for daily use and it will be fine

Sounds more like an over boosting issue is causing all your issue's have you checked or replace any of the vacuum pipes to and from the actuator?? I assume the boost is set as std normally
