Subject: Pulling for 2nd Question: Hi,when I brought my phase 2 I checked that it pulled well in every gear and went in easy. Since it's done no miles as I have fully restored it,i have lowered it to the max and uprated the clutch, ever since it seems "loose" in 2nd like if you pull hard in 1st and go for 2nd it doesn't want to go in??. By any chance lowering the car to much make this happen as it was fine befor? Or just a coinsidence and gear box is shagged??? Thanks. Answer: its purely coincidence although check your engine mounts aren't bust, as this could cause gearchange issues... |

Subject: heaters and oil pressure sensor Question: First of all I know the heaters always blow cold air from the centre dash and hot from the sides of the dash but mine also blows hot air on my feet all the time when driving how can I stop this what are my options please? I would also like to know why my oil pressure gauge works when I turn the ignition on but once the engine starts the reading on the gauge dies. Thanks. Answer: if the dash dial doesn't alter it, then the flap isn't working, or the clip that holds the wire onto it has fell off. you will have to have a good look at the centre console aarea and see if you can view the cable end. the oil pressure gauge shows oil level first, then pressure. - the pressure sensor at the bottom of the turbo oil feed could be faulty, the wiring to it is most likely fubared too! - have good look in that area. |

Subject: Speedo/Mileometer/Oil pressure gauge not working Question: Got a real problem on my hands... The 9 Turbos speedo, odometer and oil pressure gauge aren't working.... We've checked everything, connections etc. replaced the upper and lower speedo cables and the oil pressure sensor with new ones. Power is flowing as far as the dash panel at which point it dies... I have been told that it is normally the copper tracks on the dash panel that through time crack. My question is, can this be fixed? Really starting to bang my head off brick walls here so any help would be really really appreciated! Answer: you may have to delve deeper and do continuity checks from the connector to the actual gauges themselves. - Renault 5 gt turbo clocks also fit, so if you could borrow someones clocks and see if they work, that may answer a few of your questions. |

Subject: oil pressure Question: hi, does a ph 1 and a ph 2 run the same oil pressure?? im talking about two standard engines, not tuned engines. the reason I ask is im considering using a phase 1, 2 terminal sender unit and using my 2 single wires for warning light and pressure guage to the one sender unit from a ph1. just wondering do they both run the same oil pressure. any thoughts on other problems this might cause?? thanks in advance. mark Answer: yes the two engines run the same oil pressure. there are no problems I could see running the differing oil senders. |

Subject: engine hesitation Question: when car is idling and i try to rev the engine, the engine hesitates and the revs, also does this at low rpm when trying to drive. when rpm is raised to above 2000rpm it miss's slightly but will then rev asoon as i put foot down. many thanks Answer: your accelerator jet nozzle is slightly blocked. - its the brass tube that is bent over the top of the venture. this will cause hesitation as you try to accelerate. |

Subject: Spark at king lead, but not at plugs Question: Hi I've got spark at the king lead, but not at the plugs. Replaced dissy cap, rotor arm plugs and leads and still now joy. Any ideas? I was just driving along when everything died. Thanks Answer: have you checked to see that the rotor is actually turning? you could have a messed up timing sensor, which would cause sparking at the wrong times. do the leads to the plugs spark too? is the fuel pump trying to run? |

Subject: Rear brakes bias valve setting up Question: Have recently replaced the rear brake valve. I have the plastic tool but no idea in the procedure to set it correctly as every time I try it always seems to end up loose and the brakes rattle until A tiny bit of brake is applied or the handbrake pulled up a notch. I've bled the brakes up when fitted and they do work but it seems to be under normal driving conditions the rattling starts. I've checked the fitting of the pads themselves and all the retaining springs and key are fitted correctly. Thanks Answer: have you fitted the L shaped bracket correctly, that stops both the inner and outer pads rattling? you have to tap it in and fit a small spring clip through the inboard hole. |

Subject: parked up for ten years, first start attempt Question: Hi Wiz, I purchased a gtt that has been parked in a barn for the past ten years, obviously the battery is dead. When I fit jump leads the starter wont turn over, although the lights do dim slightly when I try. what do you suggest I try, fit a new starter or is there a few test's I can try to rule it out? try and hand crank the engine to make sure its nice and free? the car hasn't be modified or played with and Is all original, so It hasn't had any wiring loom hacks etc. Although there is a crude emergency engine switch off switch under the dash, I guess the former owner used it as a immobiliser! but that seems all well wired in. any hints or tips to get the starter cranking and the car to fire after all this time will be appreciated :) Answer: just turn the engine over by hand to make sure the engine turns ok. your biggest worry is that the rings have rusted in the pistons and cause the engine to turn slowly but itll be too stiff for the starter to turn the engine quickly enough to start. make sure when you try and jump the car you have totally disconnected the old battery and connected directly to the +ve and -ve wires, else it will be draining the current and not starting. - you can also check to see if the white wire to the starter is actually energising with ignition on - although if the dash lights are dimming it sounds like it might b ok. it is pointing towards the starter being duff though. |

Subject: Soft clutch shopping list Question: Can you please help, the ongoing battle I have with my clutch every day is driving me bonkers! Could you please give me a shopping list of components for a soft pedal conversion. The fun of changing a clutch cable at the side of the road is wearing thin! Answer: you are obviously feeding the clutch cable incorrectly. the proper path is behind the rear engine mount. do not bend the cable too much as it enters the bulkhead. always use a Renault OE cable. that should be fine. if you run the soft pedal conversion remember the pedal will sit higher in the car than it does now as the pedal needs to travel further to get the same movement at the clutch end.... |

Subject: Re: Gaz Coilover Suspension Question: I recently had a problem where the drivers side from wishbone bolts came loose resulting in the front wheel turning in on itself at 15mph. I had the front shock checked and was told it might be slightly bent but can be straightened. The shocks haven't done more than 1,000 miles! I was wondering what you thought the best course of action might be? - return to Gaz or..? Also, I have been told the wheels on my car are tucked too far under the arches for tracking on a Hunter machine and was wondering which other method you might recommend. Thanks Answer: id contact Gaz and get a quote on a single new shock. I wouldn't fancy rolling around with a 'straightened' shock absorber. you will probably have to find a place that will manually just adjust the front two wheels, not all 4 together. |

Subject: Not boosting low power Question: Hi. never had an R5 before so wasn't sure what to expect. The one I bought had some smoke out of the exhaust and disappointing power / lack of boost input. It has a boost gauge taped into the lobster carb and reads about 7 on boost (cup mod setup). I swapped out the turbo for a second hand one and that cured the smoke but not the lack of boost. Fitted a bleed valve and turned boost up to 10. Notice little change in power but hardly anything. Boost takes a bit of time to build but holds at 10. Swapped the carb for another and still the same, seems to be no boost and maxes at 75mph. Can't notice any leaks. Can you suggest what to check next before I take it to the garage. Thanks Answer: check all your boost hoses for leaks. check all your vac hoses for leaks. check the carb top has an O ring under it. you need to find out if the carb has been messed with, which would allow you to run abit more boost than you currently are..... |

Subject: Oil pressure sensor Question: Where is the best place to get an oil pressure sensor from? Are second hand ones ok to fit?? Answer: i'd be wary of fitting second hand as they are well known to be inaccurate. - fit new, with a new gauge. mechanical is preferred, but you need to run an oil feed to the back of the gauge. electrical ones are ok too though. |

Subject: Oil pressure gauge + warning light not working Question: Dear wizard, I think you get this question a lot, but, better to be sorry for asking a stupid question, than to break my beloved car... Yesterday, my oil gauge stopped working completely. The oil level indicator did not work for some time already, but now also the oil pressure indication stopped working too. Also, when I turn the key, without starting the car, the Oil alert lamp is not lighting up. Not sure if it ever did before though. I guess there is a higher probability that I have a problem with the sensor / wiring / dashboard, than that the oil pump stopped working completely and I will wreck my car by driving it? Answer: the wiring to the pressure sensor and the depth level sensor both go through the connector of doom by the passenger side headlamp. please clean it up and check that its ok. I think it could be your problem. |
