Subject: fuel pressure

Question:
when fitting a malpassi fpr and setting the pressure after taking out for a drive and engines up to temp the gauge has dropped. removed the fpr and tried a standard one and doing the same is this normal.

Answer:
try taking the petrol filler cap off when the car is up to temp. - if this sorts the gauge out, then you have a breather issue with the fuel tank.

Subject: breather system

Question:
is it nessersery to have all those breather pipes all i have is a breather from the rocker.

Answer:
you need the oil seperator pot. the top hose off that can go into a container. the hose from the middle of the pot can go to the rocker cover. you can block the manifold connection and the one to the turbo inlet.

Subject: Campus 1.4 Engine

Question:
Can I replace my 1.4 turbo engine with the non turbo 1.4 engine? What are the differences with the bottom end and cylinder head? I notice the compressions are a lot hight than my turbo engine! Is the camshaft different? Is the head different?
Thanks

Answer:
heads are usually different, altho some later campus' had the same heads as gtt's. The pistons are different, so is the cam, the oil pump and the chain tensioner.
the block and crank are the same though!

Subject: Odometer not working

Question:
speedo seems to be working fine but odometer is not clocking up any miles . Is it controlled by same wire that comes from speed sensor and any ideas why its not moving thanks

Answer:
you need to take the clocks apart and check the gears that turn the numbers, I had one once that had been damaged slightly through overheating and some plastic had bent slightly meaning that the gears never turned.

Subject: Window washers problems

Question:
Hi wizard,
My front window washer has packed in. My rear works fine. I bought a new motor and that didn't resolve the issue. So checked the terminal and I have 11.5 volts at the terminal so I know im getting power to the pump. So im thinking I must have an issue from the stork to the pump??? the wipers work on all other settings just not to clean the window. Im new to this so don't know what my next step is?? any advice would help
Cheers

Answer:
when you pull the stalk to activate the washer unit, does the voltage at the plug connection go from 0 to 11.5, if so, then you have a problem elsewhere. i reckon you have a blockage in the clear pipe that runs to the washer jets or the washer jets themselves are blocked?

Subject: Fan issue

Question:
Hi,
My fan kicks in twice with my new low temp fan switch fitted around a year ago and then will not kick in again so then my temp starts to build very high. It has worked fine for around a year or so always kicking in and out as it should and keeping the temp as it should but now after fetching her out of the garage for this years antics it only kicks in twice and then won't again? I need to sort asap before I genuinely hit a traffic jam early one Sunday morning maybe? Thanks.

Answer:
try buying a new fan switch. - sounds like yours is breaking down.

Subject: Window washer problem 2

Question:
Cheers for the reply, yes I have voltage at the terminal when I use the stork but the pump makes no sound and the wipers don't move. I know the pipings not blocked as I've blown down them and can here the air coming through the jets. It must be from the stork side of it but don't know how to check or where to look
Cheers again

Answer:
okay, so you press the stalk, the motor doesnt run, the pipework is free from crap.
so its either the stalk or the pump motor.
if you connect a battery directly to the pump motor it should run. - if it doesnt then its faulty. if its does then either the wiring to or from the stalk is faulty, or the stalk itself.

Got 1995 campus 1.4 engine. Is the cylinder head the same and can I use it on my 5 turbo? Which Part of the block is useable for turbo engine? I know piston will be too high compression and the cam might be different profile. Your advice would be appreciated.

Subject: engine setup

Question:
Hi wizard im ready to build my engine for my rallytrack car the car is coming back from the paint shop on Mon I'll be putting a 285or 300cam plus springs and adjustable pully in plus a big jim type downpipe I have a new turbo I got from turbo dev it is a t25core 360deg bearing it has a -35 exhaust machined to fit, compressor is-48 I hope to run 20psi I will be getting a custom 2 1/2 inc exhaust made for it with the right jetting and setting up is 180bhp possible im getting a mate who builds rally engines and has a rolling road to build the engine and time the cam in . I see Russell Thorpe has adaptronic engine management would that help and dos it have a limiter .hope you can help many many thanks Tommy.

Answer:
engine management will always give more gains than carb alone. 180bhp will be easily achievable with just a carb.

Subject: wont rev over 3000rpm under load

Question:
been rebuilding my car for a few years now, finaaly got it ready to go out for first run and in first gear i set off and it wont go over 3000-3500 rpm, it just stays there and goes no further, any ideas?

Answer:
you need to make sure that the turbo overboost sensor is NOT connected and that the dizzy rotor is correctly aligned. - you may have to remove and reinstall the cam mesh gear that sits under the dizzy, so that it sits at 6 and 12 oclock.
the reason why it wont rev, is if the rotor is in the wrong place, as the spark advances, it goes off the end of the brass contact at the end of the rotor and misfires.

or you might not be getting full travel off the accelerator pedal.... - re-adjust at the back of the carb!

Subject: only cold air from interior heater

Question:
Although I can get a good flow of air from the dashboard heaters, it only blows cold.im pretty certain im getting water through the matrix because I can bleed coolant through the bleed valves on the pipes?. There seems to be little resistance to the heat dial when turned although it isnt physically broken so I was wondering if theres something breakable "behind the scenes" that can be replaced ? Or the best way of checking. I have also not found any waterleaks in footwell.

Answer:
the centre two dashboard vents only ever blow cold...... the outside ones blow hot...

Subject: ENGINE CUTS OUT ON ACCELERATION

Question:
Hi Wiz
The cars been running fine,I have just done a hill climb
and blow a boost hose off the carb,Replaced this and now
engine cuts out on acceleration.( but not all the time )
It feels live a blocked jet but i have cleaned the carb.
Any sugestions.

Answer:
what are the symptoms up to the point when it cuts out. - might have over revved it? bent pushrod ( unlikely i know ) - failing that chekc the compression on the pistons to make sure the engine is still ok. - then look at the carb AGAIN! :)

Subject: NO brakes

Question:
hi , i had brakes yesterday but driving home it felt like only 1 front brake was working , it was getting really hot and other was cold . This morning i stripped the hot one and piston and slides were working fine . i thought it might be the other sticking so i stripped that down and piston was a bit tight when pushing it in with a clamp , then i went to pump brake pedal to push it back out and no brake pressure at all , pedal goes straight to floor and wont pump up or push piston back out , is this the master cylinder gone or brake servo

Answer:
you need to use a pressure bleeder like eezy bleed and see what happens. - you could have a flipping huge leak or the master cylinder gone!

Subject: ECU Pin out please 1990 Raider

Question:
hi mr wizard
could you please point me in the direction of an ecu pin out diagram as i want to piggyback my zeitronix zt2 afr ,rev ,boost ,temp ,etc etc gauge onto the ecu

my Car is a G plate 1990 Raider

many thanks
Pete

Answer:
you don't have an ecu on the gt turbo, only an ignition unit. you really need to buy a Haynes manual and see what the connections are. - but I can tell you now there is a positive, negative and a tdc sensor feed. - oh and a pinking sensor that no one really uses.

you will have to fit a lambda probe, boost sensor, IAT sensor etc etc and manually connect to them.

Subject: Removing the front hub nut

Question:
The caliper, carrier disk and pads are all off the front hub.
I'm struggling to undo the hub nut. I've shoved a m10 bolt through the hole to lock the hub - but the bolt bent.
Before trying to find some scrap metal and building a tool (as per the haynes manual), is there anything else i can try to lock the hub?

Answer:
put two wheel bolts in and use a breaker bar wedged against the floor and threaded between the two wheel bolts, so that when you try to undo the hub nut the wheel bolts push against the breaker bar, locking the hub.
failing that refit the caliper loosely ad use a screwdriver down the centre of it and into the vents of the disc to stop the hub turning.

Hi wiz i have just been given a t25 turbo off a saab 95 52 plate needs a rebuild do u think i will be able too make it fit without any trubile chhers

Answer:
it might be a bit of hassle to get it to fit. - you need to check that the turbo elbow fits the exhaust housing of the turbo. you will probably have to twist the housings round too. you will also need to get a new turbo oil feed

Subject: Electric windows GTT

Question:
My Electric windows won't go down on both sides and I have checked and improved spade connections to the motors. Runners seem fine to me as well. When I press the switch up they make a click noise as if the power is there but when I press them down no click noise just dead? Which fuse is for the electric windows as well as I don't know which to change.

Answer:
try connecting a battery directly to the window motors, if that does move them up and down, nothing will, which would suggest a fecked motor or really sticky mechanism....

Question:
I have recently fitted a rebuilt t25 and my car is smoking badly once up to temp , it's blue so it's oil but I have done a compression test and seems fine (140 each cylinder) , it's a phase 1 so no stem seals , I did some investigation and can see oil dripping from where the hot side of the turbo meets the bearing cartridge , I also removed the breather pipes and vented them to a catch tank and still smoking , do you think the seals are knackered ie not fitted properly ???

Answer:
the turbo is knackered :(

Subject: Occasional large backfire on over-run then again when accelerating after

Question:
I thought I cured this by removing my adjustable boost valve and then earlier it did it again twice. The car now boosts fine in 3rd, 4th 5th now and I removed the leads for over boost off the connectors and tucked them away, but tonight the dreaded loud backfire came back just over running off the throttle in 3rd and then when I pressed the throttle it misfired then accelerated. It did it twice but I thought I had cured this last season and I feel it may deteriorate again after more spirited drives. My car has always excessively burbled and popped on over run and myself or no one else could stop it and I know gtt's do it anyway but then these backfires and then a misfire is starting to come back again and I don't know what to do? Lead, plugs ignition etc are all good and boost leak is ruled out now I would say. It only did it twice tonight for the first time this year and in between them the car was driving great. please advise, many thanks.

Answer:
try sucking on the aei vac capsule. does it hold a vac , or continue being able to suck? if you can continue sucking, its fckd. this will cause alot of running faults.

Subject: backfire/misfire question 2

Question:
Hi wiz, following on from my last question the car did an occasional misfire and then even cut out when in neutral, so I am going to check the vac capsule on the aei like you said but when I was at the side of the road earlier I connected back up my tucked away spade connectors on the over boost and then the car didn't do it again and ran fine? Why is it doing this and I want to disconnect my over boost again soon and turn the psi up from 10 to 14 in time as she is just approaching 2k miles from her rebuild (standard). Sorry about this but thanks anyway.

Answer:
just pull one of the terminals off.... :)

Subject: Oil pressure gauge

Question:
Hi my oil pressure gauge doesn't move on start up...and doesn't work until at least 10-15 mins of engine running and a spirited drive :)
I'm running 5w 30 oil semi synthetic.
Is the sender on its way out ?

Answer:
5w 30 is far too thin for a c1j engine. you need 10w60, or 15w 50 fully synthetic. At the very least run 10w 40 semi!!! try that first and see what happens to the pressure.
