Subject: Dump Valve Removal Question: Hi Wizard I want to remove the two Bosch dump valves and try the car before getting a forge recirculating one. Just wondered on the connections. Presumably all the larger hoses fit as normal but need all the holes relating to the dump valves plugging? But what about the small hose feeds from the carb to the valves? Many thanks again Ian Answer: just put small bolts in the vac feeds to the carb. temp of course :) |

Subject: Door Hinge Bushes Question: Hi Wizard Managed to get the old door pins out by brute force in the end ! The diagram in Haynes is not that clear but appears to show the bushes fitting top and bottom of the drilled holes in the door support coming from the body of the car.Well if that's the case then the hinge from the door will not slot on cos it is so tight fitting the heads of the bushes get in the way !! Now Mr Haynes shows 1 spanner for this job meaning its something for my 8 year old daughter !! So do the bushes go where I assume and I give my girl an electric grinding tool or do the bushes go top and bottom of the door not body part of the hinge? In which case I need a pair of glasses for the diagram and the bottom bush will fall off ? You great advice is desperately sought as I can see my neighbors laughing at the car now ****** Answer: i thought the rollpin fitted directly into the piece that attches to the car body? - no bush involved? were there bushes in it when you took it apart? |

Subject: Which Forge Dump Valve Question: Hi Wizard Got the door on fine with the bushes and it's nice and straight and smooth operation, thank you. There are different Forge recirculating BOVs that seem to replace either one or both of the Bosch ones that I have? If so, then which one :fast road; fast road closed loop; single piston ram; RS atmospheric? I guess fast road closed loop for quieter operation but is the performance any different? Many thanks again Ian Answer: fast road suggests mild sportiness, and the closedloop type is no different in performance to the atmospheric type. - its just quieter as you said. the piston type can suffer problems - the o rings dry out and then they leak vacuum from the aei line, which can cause lean conditions in the engine. the normal diaphragm type can split, but its usually very obvious! |

Subject: Door Hinge Bushes Revisited Question: Hi Wizard In the supplement to Haynes it shows these uprated torx pins with bushes which were, it says, fitted to later models.Well mine is 1990 and you've not heard of them so maybe they were planned for the Millennium model. I got them of eBay. Got my daughter sorted with the angle grinder, great job,and about to fit the door now -- at worst the door will touch the ground and save me buying those things for the exhaust emitting fire. At least the kids will think it's fancy ! Ian Answer: good good |

Subject: Salmon Pink Wire Question: Hi Wizard Hope you can help. I've got this loose wire I found underneath the car dangling below the passenger wheel. It goes up into the engine bay fairly deep down right at the side of the passenger wheel and joins the ridged plastic casing containing other wires which runs towards the middle of the car with some wires coming out towards the computer module ???? Any ideas?Seems important?? Many thanks Ian Answer: sounds like the brake pad wear warning wire... just leave it disconnected. |

Subject: Great News! Question: Hi Wizard Great news! Just took car for MOT and it failed! But only on a front wheel bearing and highish passenger light! They were gobsmacked about everything else especially the underbody. Really pleased and gives me encouragement to continue this project. I trawled through the Haynes electrical diagrams and found the salmon pink wire is for the brake disc sensor I think but have been told not to bother connecting it. Well I have and will see what happens. Let me know what you think please. Many thanks Ian Answer: ok :) good luck! |

Subject: Original remote central locking plip and sensor Question: Hello Wizard again ! I managed to get an original matching plip and sensor which I fitted with ease and it worked ........ until recently when I did some work on the passenger widow motor. I've checked and double checked the solenoid plug connection and checked in the small interior footwell connections and checked the interior light connections (although I'm going to try a new one I have as the last one one a case of purse and sows ear although the two lights work ok)but to no avail. The batteries in the plip are new.The doors both lock fine from the central console. Also, when I press the plip there is no sound at all from the doors if they were even trying to do something. There is very little info in Haynes on this, even in the wiring diagrams. Thus, I wonder if you could comment on the following with your extended knowledge (I would like to keep the remote original); 1)Do you know where the wires for the sensor travel to from the roof console so I may follow them? 2)Apart from the obvious fuse in the fuse box, is there another relay or connection somewhere? 3)Is there some kind of actuator in the solenoid I've heard of which may cause the problem? 4)Is there any way to test the sensor in case it has expired all of a sudden? 5) any other thoughts apart from getting a 21st century remote? Your help is invaluable and greatly appreciated. Thank you. Answer: http://www.rtoc.org/files/?path=Technical Files/Recoding an oe R5 Central Locking Plip/ this may show the connections you need to be getting for the thing to work? |

Subject: Cutting out when hot Question: Strange one for you... Car runs a bit lumpy when cold but is drivable, when hot the damn thing cuts out if you come to a stop say for example coming to a set of lights or parking. Subject: AFR Question: Hi Wizard and hope you are well. Can you tell me if I'm right in thinking that having an in-car AFR allows you to self diagnose air fuel ratios when the car is running in different driving conditions(I don't mean rain or snow!)and then to adjust the carb plus other things yourself? If the car is taken to a 5GTT knowledgeable place with rolling road would they not set these things up for you?So the AFR is if you are more hands-on? Is there a wide band reasonably priced, easily fitted AFR you could recommend? Many thanks for your enlightenment. Ian Answer: the afr is a must if you like tinkering. i recommend this product: http://www.efi-parts.co.uk/index.php?productID=303 |

Subject: Set-up Question: Hello Wizard. From bedtime reading of the Wizardry archives, am I correct in thinking, that with an unaltered car you would recommend 7x15 35et PCD 100 wheels with 195/45x15 tyres (toyo T1R ok?)and lowering the car from 40mm (standard?) to 35mm for best all round compromise of looks, handling and performance? I understand that lowering the car will alter its tyre stance on the road so would the camber/toe etc need adjusting by this amount of lowering? Many thanks again Ian Answer: you can't easily adjust the camber - only way is with camber adjust bolts. - most people dont touch the camber to be honest. toe in/out needs to be checked though. stick with a moderate drop. |

Subject: Were all springs made equal? Question: Hello Wizard again? When lowering the car with new 35mm coils does it matter paying more for them if I'm going to replace the shocks from standard to something a little more stiffer performance wise? Any recommendations on both that will increase road-holding but not shatter my porcelain crowns or rupture my girls implants? Also you recommend when doing this to change the bushes and bearings? Which ones and why so (do they need to be uprated)? Many thanks again Ian Answer: just get new rubber mounts or even poly top mounts, also get new top mount bearings, whilst you are at it. just have a look at the boards to see what most people recommend. - named and recognised brands ae a must as cheapy cheaps tend to lie about the amount they drop and may use substandard steel. |

Subject: Archived Questions Question: Hi Wizard, After answering all my recent questions and using the brain cogs and after my bedtime archive reading I did want to remind you of some funny questions and answers you may or may not remember. They are from memory so not fully accurate Q:Lowering tortion bar (That is the question) A:Do you mean torsion bar? (That is the answer) Q:How do I ............etc and who are you? A:you .................etc Ps.It's on a need to know basis and you don't need to know ! Q:How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood? A:(Wizard exuding pissed offness)There are no woodchucks in this country so it is a stupid question anyway. Many thanks again Ian Ps I'll send you some rebuild pics of my car if you send me your real name, bank details with pin number and a semi clothed pic !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (joking) Answer: i'd just stick the pictures on the rebuild section of the boards, mentioning all the help i've been giving you. - that'll remind the rest of the committee that i'm here, doing a job no-one else can be arsed to do for around 10 years now. i wouldnt even mind, i dont even own a bloody renault, let alone a 5 now. |

Subject: RTOC Original Dials Question: Hi Wizard, I've recently had a set of these delivered and installed, bit of a pain as you have to remove the needles(also bought a used clock and took the oil level/pressure unit out and put it in my original set of clocks. It looks great! However:Do you know where to replace the needles, I mean at what level when the clocks are removed from the car because the petrol is very low but the red light is not on (I replaced all bulbs(I guess the needle needs moving up))but more importantly with the oil/pressure needle. You see the needles can be put right at the bottom but then don't seem to work accurately. Just any ideas thanks Ian Answer: you've made a fundamental mistake. you should have looked at the position of the needles, taken a picture with you phone and then copied the position with the new dials in place. - the only thing you can do now ias fit the clocks with no plastic cover, loosely fit the needles and then see if they ae OK - if not, just move them. - if they are, then press the needles on properly. |

Subject: Gear linkage adjustment Question: Just had my gearbox rebuilt, but really struggling on linkage adjustment. Is there a proper procedure as its been 4 years since I removed engine and gearbox. Thank you. Answer: trial and error im afaid. once you get the position of the stick where you want it, then mark it on the knurled rod. you will need a helper to put it into gear whilst your underneath. - getting reverse and 5th is a bit of a balancing act, but it does take that long. :) |

Subject: Fan on when driving Question: Hi Wizard, Just went for a hardish trial run up and down a straight dual carriageway about 2 miles and noticed after 3/4 mile at the roundabout that the fan was on. I'm glad it works but with the oil cooler and extra intercooler and the bonnet vent to the piper air filter I would have thought everything would be cool without the fan for a simple trip. Is there a problem do you think or am I wrapping my child in cotton wool? Many thanks Ian Answer: what did the gauge say? the 5 engines do generate quite abit of heat you know.... |

Subject: Fan On and New Dials Question: Hi Wizard The temp gauge was not overly high at all.Don't forget in my recent post I told you about replacing the dials and where to set the needles! Withe the car standing and running the fan comes on at about 10o'clock so about right I think; So the questions are: 1) In light of the above do you reckon it should have been on in relation to what I described in my last post? and 2)To get the needle position correct on the fuel dial:is the low fuel level red light triggered by the fuel level gauge in the tank or the dashboard gauge? Because (light and bulb working)if it is the fuel tank gauge then I can wait for the low petrol light to come on and then reposition the needle appropriately.Simple !?! Thank you Ian Answer: have you bled all the air out of the water system correctly? - this can cause hot spots and the fan can kick in at odd times. - if the hoses feel hot to the touch and the fan is on, then the water temp can be about the 45deg / 10.30 |

Subject: Oil Question: Hello Wizard. I've been running on thin oil since I changed my last oil and filter recently to try and clean out the gunk as the oil in it when I bought it was like sludge. I sent my nearest and dearest to get me synthetic 15w50.The nice man in the shop said he had something much better for older classic cars ... 20w50 which I thought was ok and did the oil change only to realise it is mineral not synthetic. Any problems with this? thank you Ian Answer: yes, the 20w50 may well react with the remaining fully synth and form a horrible thick gunk. Drain it, flush it and refill it with semi or fully synth - change the filter too. |

Subject: Fan On and New Dials 2 Question: Hi Wizard Yes I've bled the system multiple times and coolant comes out of both screws on the samcos.Early this morning when no one was up I blew hard into the header tank with no result(and I used to be an excellent trumpet player in my youth!).The pipes feel red hot, hotter than 45'as does the alloy radiator itself(I do have low temp gauges in the fan and hose). I don't know if there is an oil leak somewhere cos after a short drive I noticed oil inside the new alloy on the drivers side.Could this cause it. All help most gratefully recieved. Ian Answer: so the fan comes on, the temp doesnt rise..... sounds like its working ok to me. the oil - where exactly is this? - alloy what? |
