Subject: Steering wheel removal

Question:
Hi what size socket is required to remove the standard steering wheel boss? Any tips or is it a case of full lock left and crack her loose?
Thanks

Answer:
i cant remember off the top of my head, but i usually use a wheel brace! - its one of the sizes on there! - full lock, undo it all the way, then screw it back on a couple of turns.
get your knees behind the wheel, and your hands behind the top of the wheel. then pull.
then with your hands wobble left and right, top and vottom pulling towards you at all times. - this usually works.

Question:
Thanks for the advice, I ask because I plan to fit a snap off steering wheel to stop potential joyriders.
Could you recommend a suitable torque setting to put the new boss on? I don't usually get so precise but I've just bought a new torque wrench and i'm dying to use it. I also don't want it to come off whilst driving lol

Answer:
i would personally use thread lock and the setting of FT on the gauge. - i dont have a Nm setting, just F****** tight will do.

Subject: Float level

Question:
What should my float level be set to and how can i go about de choke the carb? Thanks

Answer:
the float level is preset in most carbs. the problem is that if you mess about with the level it alters the richness of the mixture.
you could try and fit a thinner washer under the float chamber jet or us ptfe tape on the thread and remove the washer completely. - that way the float sits higher in the chamber and thus allows it to fill up with more fuel. - if it dont work, put the washer back in :)

i wouldnt personally dechoke the carb as the visible cross section of an open choke flap is minimal. - but to take it off you need to undo the two small screws that hold the flap into the spindle. - then slide the spindle out and block the hole with a nut and bolt....

Subject: PSI & Compression Ratio

Question:
Could you please tell me what PSI the standard R5 GT Turbo engine will take before the compression ratio goes way out and the engine knocks?

Answer:
the standard gt turbo engine can take i'd say at least 23psi on a standard cam.(maybe even more) - provided the fuelling is correct and it has better intercooling. dont forget, as soon as you put a performance cam in, the dynamic compression drops. - i.e from 150 psi down to about 125psi per cylinder. althought static compression remains the same ;)
why do you ask?

Subject: upgrading rear brakes

Question:
not really a tech question but, has anyone managed to fit different calipers to the rear, i've been given a set of 4 pots from the front of a nice fast bike they will fit over the disc, i was thinking of a similar set up to an r8 the original caliper being used only for the handbrake the the 4 pots mounted seperatly as the brakes, it isnt really needed as the rears are very capable,
what possible problems have i overlooked?

Answer:
you will need to make the master cylinder much larger to cope with the extra fluid needed to move the 4 pots....

Subject: Turbo Heat Shield fitting

Question:
Hi Wizard try as I might I just cant seem to wrestle a turbo heat shield back onto my car.I`m replacing a stainless steel shield with a new oe one and I cant for the life of me get it into position.I`ve removed the stainless breather pipe off the back of the turbo elbow and the bracket that bolts onto the block for bolting the starter/turbo heat shield to,to see if this can give a path through and I still cant wangle it through. Also wereabouts does the hot air feed pipe/bracket bolt to? (the hot air feed to airbox pipe) many thanks for any help..

Answer:
have you tried taking the carb off yet? - usually brute force can help, but if its spangly and new then you might not want this approach. - im assuming it is a full one - that covers the whole exhaust manifold?

from memory I think there is bracket with a hose connector for the hot air hose, that sits under the heatshield and is bolted to the side of the turbo?

Subject: Using a Trolley Jack and Axle Stands

Question:
Hi, where would be the best place to jack up my 5 using a trolley jack, and then where would be the best place to position the axle stands? I appreciate this may seem obvious, but having never carried this out before I want to make sure the car is properly supported when I remove my wheels.

Thank you

Answer:
i'd avoid the jacking points that's for sure!
I use the chassis rail - its about 1 foot inboard from the sill. - failing that the front subframe is good too.

Question:
Hi wiz which way should the clutch plate face when fitting please,i have searched site for diagram but couldnt find, maybe a haynes would help but id rather ask you. many thanks

Answer:
the bit that sticks out, sits inside the clutch cover. if you get it the wrong way round, the clutch springs will wear a groove into the flywheel bolts.

Subject: Strut brace problem

Question:
I have tried and failed to fit two different types of strut brace to the front of my Gt turbo , as the suspension struts are too far apart , I trial fitted the same braces to a different car and they fit ,
Is my chassis twisted or are there differences in the body of some cars ?

Answer:
doesnt sound good. - although yours might have had new shock turrets welded in. - did you get to measure both cars, bolt hole to bolt hole and see what the differences were?

Question:
Hi Wiz,

I drove past some chaps late last night at my local tesco's. They looked like they were having some kind of meeting or convention, possibly about baseball caps, shell suits or athletic clothing. I could not tell.

What I could see however was a long list of brands down the doors of the vehicles they were driving and this left me wondering. Have they done this purely as a fashion statement or as a tuning upgrade providing more power? If I were to plaster Heinz, Cadburys, etc down my door would my car be quicker?

Thank you,
Sol

Answer:
unfortunately, you appear to be living 5 years in the past. i too see the youths lurking in the car parks, but they seem to be talking 'stance' with cars wheels poking out at angles that suggest their rear stub axles are bent. ;)

Subject: release bearing type for volvo clutch arm

Question:
Hi, i have a longer arm which is from a volvo box and unsure what correct bearing would be suitable as ones have tries will not allow fitment as it snaps the pegs off due to arm thickness, what would you recommend?thanks

Answer:
if you are using a volvo clutch arm, doesnt that suggest you should be using a volvo release bearing too?
if you are, maybe you need to 'thin' the metal at the end of the arm alittle with our old friend 'mr angle grinder' - never heard of the prob before, but theres always a first time :)

Question:
Hive recently purchaced a 5 with a 182 box fitted to it?

The speedo does not work and i was wondering if there was a way to get it working?
I belive that the speedo drive in the 182 would be electronic and the 5 manual

Answer:
the gt turbo's speedo is electronic too, although im not sure they use the same way of communicating with the clocks..... i assume the 182's speedo feed reports back to the ecu and that the tells the clocks what to show the driver. - if that is the case, you might be better off fitting a gt turbo box.....

Subject: aftermarket Rear Bias fitting.

Question:
Hi

I want to fit an aftermarket rear brake bias valve to my track car as my original has failed.

I would also like to run the lines internally and use a single line to feed to the rear if possible.

My question is regarding the master cylinder and how to plumb it. Do I just blank one of the rear supply ports and feed the rear using one, or do I have to join the two after the master cylinder and then split it later in the circuit?

Also would this be road legal?

Many thanks

Adam

Answer:
i would just block one of the master cylinder ports and run the single line to the back. as long as the brakes work, i wouldn't have thought that it would have been illegal.... as long as it passes an MOT?

Hi was wondering if you could help, was on my way home from work today, she was running fine bout 10 to 1 on boost then it went to 22.4 to 1 and started poppin and cutting out. After leavin her for 10 15 mins she ran fine agen but as soon as boost kicks in she starts runnin at 22 to 1 agen and wont even tick over will only run if I flap my foot on throttle or turn her off for 15 min or so Not sure if it carb or fuel pump? She running 22 psi on t28 hybrid with cat custom cam any ideas would be much appreciated :(

Answer:
check that your dump valve diaphram hasnt split, or with a baileys type, that the O rings arent leaking. - also check the hoses that connect the inlet manifold to the dump valve to the ignition unit. i have a feeling that this is likely to be your problem.

Subject: Testing oil pressure

Question:
Hi, I've seen from Haynes that using a oil pressure gauge that it should be 0.7 bar at idle, 3.5 bar @ 4000 rpm. Is that realistic?

Answer:
thats not too bad actually. Most people tend to see about 45psi at 4k, however, if you rev the engine past that, you would really hope that the oil pressure rises alittle bit more. (although in almost all cases it doesnt) - which is one of the reasons prolonged high revs kill the c1j engine )
