Subject: Upgrading Turbo

Question:
Hi Wiz me again,

I've got a hybrid for my 5 which has just blown it's oil seals, now i was thinking, as it's off could it be upgraded to give more power and boost? It's a T2 turbo with T25 internals, so would it be benefical to put T25 housings on it? or is this not advisable?? help as i'm in a pickle.

Or would it be cheaper to buy a T25 turbo??

Cheers ears

Stu

Answer:
Depending on the parts already used it may well be cheaper to buy a T25 complete.
Just ring the turbo manufacturer and get a quote for both eventualities!
The T25 will have more lag but will move more air overall.

Subject: whistle

Question:
wiz, when i take my car up to 90-100mph i get like a high pitched tone like a whistle.and its not the wind.what can it be?

Answer:
It could be related to an air cyclone in the air filter or turbo itself. It could also be related to a wheel bearing or similar. It is quite hard to suggest answers to problems like this with out seeing the car. Try getting a local member to assisst you in solving this dilema or even take it to a rolling road and see if they can find it.

Subject: Sill repair panels

Question:
Could you please tell me where i can get sill repair panels for my 5 GTT
Andyspares and Allparts do not list them for the Turbo, only the standard models which i assume won't have the fixings for the side skirts etc

Also what size tyres should i use with 14"" rims?

Answer:
Sills are available from Renault and any good body panel dealer. Try the yellow pages or local trading estate.

195/50 or 185/50 may do the job. 15's would be better thou!

Subject: OIL PRESSURE GAUGE

Question:
HI WIZ

EVER SINCE I BOUGHT MY CAR THE OIL PRESSURE GAUGE HAS BEEN DODGY. SOMETIMES IT READS GREAT ABOUT 5-6. OTHER TIMES IT WILL ONLY READ ABOUT 2, THEN SOMETIMES IT WILL NOT READ ANYTHING AT ALL. EVEN THOUGH I KNOW IT HAS OIL PRESSURE.

WHY IS IT THAT IT WILL READ GREAT WHEN IT IS WINTER MOSTLY.

Answer:
It could be down to your oil being too thin for summer use or it could just be a dodgy sender or gauge.
Try a thicker oil like 15w40 after flushing the system with cheap oil. (Don't rag it with the cheap oil in or use engine flush as it is too thin for turbo cars)

Subject: TO BE DUMPING OR NOT T0 BE DUMPING!!

Question:
Howdy Wiz

When I bought my 5 nearly 10 months ago I was told it had a dump valve. Then when i got home with it and checked there was no dumpy their, but it dumps off everytime I lift off the accelerator. Then a mechanic told me it was a Blow Off valve. The engine is currently in bits getting new piston rings but the garage fixing it cant find a Blow-Off valve either.

can you please shed some light on the situation for me please, I would be very gratefull

DB

Answer:
A dump valve or blow off valve will usually be situated somewhere in the top boost hose from the intercooler to the carb top. It has been known for them to be put into the short boost hose from the turbo to intercooler as well.
It should be obviously sticking out from the pipe with a small (4-6mm) diameter hose running from it towards the ecu to carb line.
If you don't have this then it could be that you have it built into a hybrid turbo casing. (similar to a tomcat turbo)

Subject: Anti-Perc

Question:
Wiz,

How can I test if my anti-perc system is working? I know the fan works but it never comes on! The entire wiring loom is brand new so it can't be the wiring. Could it be the sensors that are broken and how do I test them? Is it as simple as joining the wires together that go to each switch?

Cheers

Chris Roberts

Answer:
Simple answer YES!

Touch the wires together from either switch and the fan should start.
If it doesn't, try the in line fuse or the relay for the perc fan. Both are situated near the perc fan motor.

Subject: Ignition Adjustments for 16 PSI boost

Question:
I am in the process of rebuilding my Phase 1 Renault 5 GTT and am looking to run 16 PSI boost controlled by an in-car bleed valve and strapped intercooler.
I have the correct carb jet sizes for this level of boost but can you tell me how the ignition should be modified (i have heard rumours of swopping terminals)
And should i disconnect the overboost sensor or can it be modified or replaced
best regards
Kelly Jones

Answer:
The ignition can stay as standard as long as you don't get pinking.
If you do then just retard it a bit. (Assuming you have an adjustable timing sensor fitted.)
You can disconnect the overboost switch if you don't have the adjustable type. (Hole in between the two contacts.)

Best thing to do is get the car set up on the rolling road for top results.

Subject: Smoking at Idle

Question:
I've just got a T25 hybrid that has done about 5000k and is totally wicked but every so often and only at idle and after the car is warmed up, white clear smelly smoke come out of my exshaust. Ive been told its the turbo but it needs running in and a good service would get rid of the problem is this true!!! Or should i be worried that the turbo is knackered

Answer:
Could be that the seals are not bedded in, but white smoke is normally coolant and it is very sickly sweet smelling when it burns. This could be due to the water jacket in the turbo being cracked or it could be condensation from the breather system if you still have it connected to the turbo inlet elbow.
Try changing the oil/filter and clean out the oil seperator and breather pipes to see if this fixes the problem.

Subject: thermostat

Question:
I have just fitted a new rad, water pump and hoses. The temp is fine without the thermostat, but when it is in place the temp is higher and the top rad hose collapses in when you rev the engine. The system is bled + I drilled a 3mm hole in the thermostat, so why is it doing this? Do I have a dodgy/wrong thermostat? (it is an 86c one) when I tested it in boiling water the valve opened about 5mm is that right why is it important to have the thermostat fitted as I have heard various reports and a few people remove them in the summer...many thanks..

Answer:
The car is bound to run a little cooler if there is no resistance to the flow of water, but it will take longer to heat up to working temp on short journeys or in winter. I would recommend fitting a low temp thermostat as i believe it is better to have one than not. It is normal for the top hose to collapse a bit.

Subject: Air filter

Question:
Good afternoon wiz!
I have just bought a Pipercross cone air filter (PK062) the one that comes with a heat shield. The problem is that the standard heat shield is in the way , does this mean I don't need the shield that came with the filter? can I just leave it. The other problem I have is that in the instructions they tell you to take the hot air pipe off the back of the turbo by removing 2x M8 bolts but again I can't get to these because of the heat shield . After all this I put the filter on with out using any of the bolts or other stuff in the box or removing the hot air pipe ,will this ruin the filter as I don't want to waste 65 notes please help!

Answer:
It will not hurt the filter as long as the heat near it is not too great.
If it gets too hot then remove the std heatshield, fit your filter shield and another type of turbo heatshield available from the tuners.

Subject: intermittent misfire

Question:
Hi there,

My Renault 5 turbo runs fine but every now and then will develop quite bad misfire, and the rev counter goes up/down quite violently. What could it be, ive checked plugs leads cap arm etc and wondered if you had any ideas. Could it be the coil/ecu unit maybe?? Pretty sure it isnt a fuelling problem!!

Cheers Wiz

Answer:
It could be that the vaccuum advance unit has either gone or it may have a small leak in the pipes etc.
You say you have checked the leads etc, how? On a Crypton tuner?
The fault sounds electrical to me.

Subject: still hot hot hot

Question:
thank for the answers but ive had a low temp stat put on the rad, and ive put a switch in the car for the fan and the temp stat that goes in the water pipe was taken out ages ago i was wondering if it could be the water pump????

Answer:
Water pump seems to be the next step.
You can check to see if the pump has sheared off by removing the top rad hose and looking into the back of the pump. Any signs of water or coolant crystals under the pump pulley will indicate that the pump seals have gone.

Subject: oil breather filter

Question:
Hello again!
I have just bought a mini oil breather filter can you please tell me were and which hose it go's
on.
Thanks in advance!!!

Answer:
You can fit it in a couple of places depending on how your breather system is set up.

1) Remove the hose that goes to the turbo inlet elbow, block the hole in the ""U"" bend and fit the filter to the breather pipe near the turbo.

2) Shorten the above pipe to get the filter nearer the middle of the engine bay.

3) or you could modify the pipework severily and fit the filter wherever you like!!!!

Subject: hybrid or not

Question:
I have brought a 5GT and was told it had a md14 hybrid turbo and group A carb, there's no receipts so how can i tell whether or not they are, thanks.

Answer:
The Group A carb will have been bored out in the venturi tube to around 28mm rather than the standard 25mm.

The MD14 turbo will have a manufacturers number or plate on it. Take this number and phone Turbo Dynamics and ask them what it is.

Subject: thermostat

Question:
Thanks for the advice on cooling question what temp thermostat would you recommend?

Thanks.

Answer:
You can use the 83 degree stat from another 5 model or go as low as 72 degrees if you really want to.
Either speak to the tuners or try your local Partco or whoever and just compare parts from other models or cars.

Subject: How much boost should I have?

Question:
I have a standard R5 GTT (apart from cosmetic changes).

When the turbo is on full boost, the turbo gauge goes up to about 3/4. Is this what it should be, or should it go all the way to the end of the gauge?

Answer:
The standard boost should be approximately in line with the B or O of the word turbo on the gauge. Any further than this will probably mean that the actuator rod has been shortened to give more boost.

Subject: Rolling Road or Re-build?????

Question:
Wiz, my engine has done 128,000!! High I know, but it's been well looked after with a LOT of service history. I want to start doing a few more mods to the engine. I've already done the basics i.e. bleed valve dump valve etc, but I,m worried that the engine and standard turbo may not be able to handle the extra power. I want a hybrid turbo (so if anyone has one for sale let me know (gtturbomad@yahoo.co.uk)) but before I replace my old turbo should I get my car rolling road tested or would you suggest an engine re-build?

Thanks oh great one

Andy Clegg

Answer:
Obviously a full rebuild would be best but money will allways dictate what you can do.
If the car has good compression (get a check) and good oil pressure (above 3-4 bar on the gauge) then I would say it is basically sound.
Give it a full service before starting modifications and keep the boost reasonably low, say below 18psi and it should be ok.
Allways get the car rolling roaded to ensure fuelling and timing are correct.

Subject: Hard pedal

Question:
Dear Wizard,
Recently every morning when I take my GTT on the road, the 1st 2nd or 3rd application of the brakes produces a hard pedal and little stopping effect.Pumping hard whilst stopped brings back normality for the rest of the day.Similar yet different to Alex D's problem 3/12/2000
Any ideas?

Regards,
,G.S.S

Answer:
A hard pedal is usually down to a servo or servo pipe problem. To test the servo, turn the engine off, pummp the pedal a few times to release any vaccuum and the with your foot on the brake pedal start the engine. The pedal should sink towards the floor a bit.
You may also have a problem with the little white one way valve fitted to the pipe that goes onto the servo. Try removing and testing this as well as the valve in the back of the manifold.

Subject: temp gauge

Question:
roughly where should the temp needle point mine is just under half with the fan cutting in just over half I am using an 83 deg stat.is this ok thanks again.....

Answer:
Hi Nick,

Yes that's about right - the temperature gauge should sit at around half way if you stop in traffic and the fan should cut in to prevent it going any higher - so all is well ;-)

Subject: crankshalf pulley seal

Question:
Dear Wizzer,

After hours of grovelling under the car (a R5 GTT), I've found where my mysterious oil leak is. There appears to be oil seaping from behind the crankshaft pulley. Haynes tells me there is an oil seal there, but requires the sump and timing cover to be removed to replace it. Can I get at it by just removing the pulley wheel, or by just removing the pulley wheel and timming chain cover? Apparently to get the sump off you have to lift the engine slightly, and I'd rather avoid doing this.

Cheers mate,

Nick J (lazy barsteward)

Answer:
You will have to remove or drop the sump and remove the timing cover to replace that seal. The engine doesn't have to be lifted but it makes the removal easier as the sump catches on the front engine mount. If you are doing this then you will need both sump end seals and a tube of gasket sealant as there is no actual sump gasket. Seals cost about £5 each from Renault and sealant is about £2-3.

Subject: SHOCKS

Question:
Hi Wiz,
I need some rear shocks and front brake discs and pads to pass my MOT, would I be better off uprating them or keeping them standard?, I hear Green Stuff pads are really good pads to use. Would uprated cost alot more too?.

thanx for your help

BATMAN

Answer:
I allways say uprated is best!

Greenstuff pads are excellent for fast road and a little track work and a set of drilled or grooved disks will help stopping distances as well. You could buy cheap std disks for about £30 but they may warp easily and will deffinately need replacing sooner than the more expensive uprated items.

As for the shocks, go for adjustables if you can afford it and Clio 16V shocks if your car is lowered a lot.

Subject: Bloody pipes

Question:
Having put a new head, carb and turbo on i am having a few troubles as to were my pipes go. I know before you say it, i should have taken notes as to where but you only learn from your mistakes. If you can help or know of any sites that can give a good picture of what goes were it would be of some help.
Thanks for your time,
Ben

Answer:
I do know of some pictures that may help on the web but what about looking at a Haynes manual?
If you put on the pipes that you know where they go and see what is left, this way the task will look less daunting. A lot of the pipes are shaped so they will only fit in one place and then i can help you with the rest.

Subject: big carb and k+n filter

Question:
I OWN A 1.7 MONACO AND WANT TO UPGRADE THE FUELING/ AIR SYTEM. AT THE MOMENT I HAVE A SOLEX TWIN CARB AND A REPLACEMENT K+N ELEMENT IN THE STANDARD AIRBOX. WHEN THE ENGINE IS COLD IT ACCELERATES AND PULLS A LOT HARDER, THAN WHEN ITS WARM. CAN I GET A PROPER K+N FILTER? I THOUGHT ABOUT RIGGING UP SOME WATER INJECTION SYSTEM?? WOULD IT BE WISE TO FIT A LARGER CHOKE CARB? TWIN 45/50'S???
I HAVE ALSO THOUGHT ABOUT FITTING SOME KIND OF COOLING FAN TO BLOW DOWN THE INDUCTION TUBE INTO THE CARB... ANY IDEAS WOULD BE GREAT... THANKS A LOT

Answer:
A K&N filter on the std card will possibly loose power unless you duct cold air from the bumper to feed it due to the under bonnet temperatures. You could allways duct cold air to the standard setup. As for big carbs, they will allways produce big power but need to be set up and checked frequently to get good results. Water injection will only help if you try running big advance for more power.
