Subject: which dump valve Question: being new to the gt t scene what type of dump valve is best to fit my motor is completely standard is it worth putting one on cheers .... Answer: If the car is std it will only really benifit in the noise you get from a dv. A filtered valve will prevent any dirt entering the system but a normal diaphram type is usually louder! |

Subject: Boost reduction Question: Since having fitted a front mounted intercooler, my max boost is only around 13/14psi before i could make 20 psi + no problem (hybrid 360 thrust bearing), i have a soleniod type bleed valve under the bonnet, even with the screw taken out i can't manage any more boost! i understand that there would be pressure losses to be taken into consideration. the car does feel alot different to when i ran 14psi without the front mounted jobbie, i checked for air leaks, realised there was no restrictor in the actuator pipe have now put one in, seems to have made a small difference, please could you shed any light on this matter for me , p.s the turbo and actuator are about 8 months old/1500 miles. best regards michael. a couple of people hve said i possibly need a bigger turbo , is this the case or have i just answered my own question! Answer: I expect the boost reduction is actually due to the extra air needed to fill the intercooler and pipework. Your little turbo can only move so much air and this system obviously needs more than you can supply. My recommendations would be to either try a bigger turbo (On loan from a friend?) or refit a smaller intercooler and see if the boost goes back up to normal. |

Subject: Ultrasonic Detonation. Question: Hi wiz, My engine is coming back on monday after a head skim. The engineers told me that the were definatley signs of detonation around cylinders 2,3 & 4. I have a Stage 1 Turbo techniques and its been blowing at about 16 psi (just under). I have never heard any detonation from the engine, the engineers told me it could be ultrasonic. I wanted to ask how much I should lower the boost by to avoid the detonation?? What is the easiest way to increase the boost and avoid the pinkin probs?? I got and alloy intercooler rejetted carb, copper rad etc. whats next charge cooler, water injection/spray?? Thanks Answer: If you are using normal 95 ron unleaded or LRP 4 Star then that is probably your problem! If you are using 97 ron unleaded or REAL 4 Star 98+ then try retarding the ignition timing a couple of degrees if you have an adjustable timing sensor. Make sure the car is set up correctly on a rolling road. If all else fails, try 14psi or less for safety. |

Subject: Rubbing Wheels, not so groovy Question: Dear Wiz, I've recently bought some 2nd hand 15"" MasItaly VT5R wheels fitted with 195/45 Yokos. Unfortunately when on full LH look the inside of the drivers side front wheel rubs against something. I've looked at the wheel and a small groove has been scrapped on the corner of the rim. The groove follows the whole circumference of the wheel. I've had a look underneath but can't see what's rubbing, the wheels came of another 5 so I assume the offset is correct. What's causing the rubbing, why only on one side and how do I fix it? Cheers, Nick Answer: Have a good look at the brake lines or for any protruding metalwork on the inner wing. |

Subject: push rods Question: I have a bent push rod, will it be ok just to change the bent one or should i change them all, and would this let oil into the engine and burn it off as black/grey smoke? Thanks for your help Ben Answer: You can change only one but obviously a full set is better if you have the money! Oil burns blue and fuel/carbon burns black usually. It could be that the bent rod is also a bent valve and this has dislodged carbon from the cylinder. Have a look if the head is off or get a compression check if it is still fitted. |

Subject: RATTLING Question: A FEW WEEKS AGO I TOLD YOU I WAS FITTING 17s AND AVO COILOVERS. I VE FITTED THEM AND AFTER A WEEK THE N/S/F SHOCK IS STARTING TO RATTLE.EVERYTHING IS TIGHT I.E NUTS PLATES ETC. COULD THERE BE A FAULT IN THE SHOCK ITSELF OR MAYBE THE BEARING IN THE TOP PLATE?IF THE SHOCK IS AT FAULT AM I ENTITLED TO A EXCHANGE AND WOULD I HAVE GOT A GUARANTEE WITH THEM. THERE FROM GT TUNING. ALSO THE CAR HANDLES TERRIBLY. IVE GOT THEM SET ON SOFT AND I HAVE NOT DROPED THE BACK ONLY THE FRONT IS THIS THE CAUSE? Answer: If the shock is at fault then GT Tuning are bound to get a replacement or rebuild that shock for you under warrenty. The unbalanced drop you mention will affect the handling so drop that rear suspension! Also, try setting the shocks a bit harder as this will make a massive difference. The soft setting is as soft or softer than standard! |

Subject: piston dumpvalve Question: hello wizard iv had a piston dumpvalve fitted for about a month now and have had no problems [ ie sticking] but i have heard a lot of bad stories about the piston valve i am only runing standard boost but im not sure weather to change to a diaphram type thanking you exellent site Answer: The piston valve will be fine as long as you have no oil getting in from the turbo or breather system as it is these that cause the sticking to be worse. Make sure you strip and lubricate it occasionally. |

Subject: Wont Start Question: Dear Wizard Ive had some problems starting my car over the last few months. Ive replaced the motor twice to no avail, eventually the dash lights (all except handbrake) would go off when the motor was cranked, so I took it to an automotive electrician who said the only problems were a couple of loose connections, but after a fortnight off good starting it still wont start, the starter only makes a clicking sound when turned, you can usually start the car by rocking it on the starter in gear, but sometimes it just wont start, unless it is push started. Ive heard from some people that the ground connection on the engine can cause these problems, so should I renew that, or could it be something else. Thanks John Answer: Yes try the earth connections etc first. It could be a weak battery adding to the problem so get that checked as well. |

Subject: Pulling Tips Question: Hi Wizard, Just a quick one! I used to be able to pull the chicks when i was crusing around the town in my GT Turbo but these days my pulling power seems to have dried up. Is it that girls dont like Gt Turbos any more? I have even got a GT Tuning sun screen on mine and i still cant pull them?????? Answer: I think I have found your problem! The chicks have got used to your car and its GT Tuning sunstrip and are after something new and exciting!! Try a new paint job, bodykit or trendy new www.gtturbo.org sunstrip available from Rachel Head (Club Chairperson) If you still can't pull, then take me out for a ride with you to increase your flagging pulling powers! ;-) The Chick Magnet. |

Subject: NITROUS? Question: hi Wiz, Ive been thinking about using Nitrous for a while now! ive never actually herd of any fives that have run using nitrous not even at drag strips so I was just wondering is the word ""NITROUS"" a big NO in the world of GT turbo`s. Anyway if it is possible to use the laughing gas on my 5, I was wondering what would be the best route to take? ok suppose ive got an uprated cluch and head gasket with uprated head bolts but with a standard turbo, I know to get more power would be to have a bigger hybrid turbo but ive been thinking NITROUS! if it would be a good Idea where would it be best for the nitrous to be injected? in the cylinders or in the induction pipe? if it was injected in the induction pipe that goes on the turbo would it make the turbo spin up too fast or wouldnt it make much difference? would I need a hybrid anyway! im only thinking about using a 50 BHP jet. would this be a possible idea or will I just end up blowing my engine to pieces? thought I would ask you now cos I think people using nitrous will go up after everyone has watched the film ""THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS"" which comes out on september the 14th. cheers WIZ Answer: Nitrous can be used on turbo cars like the 5 and there was a black example at USC this year. (OK so it blew up!) You have to get the nitrous and fuel ratio correct or you will get no end of problems. Inject the mixture into the manifold. A better suggestion for turbo cars is to use the nitrous only long enough to get the turbo spinning up to reduce lag. Do your research arround the Nos sites. |

Subject: Refitting doors Question: I am changing my doors and want to put stronger door pins in. I have heard this will stop them dropping. What size pins should i use and where can i get them. Also I want to smooth the rear bumper. What filler is best to use and paint. Thanks, Chris Answer: You can drill out the present hole to take 8mm roll pins instead of the std 7mm. Any motor factor should sell them. Use fibre glass with a thin skim of filler to finish off. Use plastic type fillers as they allow a little movement. Use normal paint! |

Subject: reliable or not Question: dear wizz I've just bought a 90 5 turbo with 54k no mods at all and in v good order.a lot of people have the opinion the 5 turbo is an unreliable car apart from the main points of turbo clutch head gasket are there any other points to be cautious with.if the car is maintained and looked after correctly should it prove to be a fun reliable car many thanks. Answer: Firstly, congratulations on buying the ultimate hot hatch! The car needs regular servicing with a good quality oil and filters to prevent damage and keep the boost low for total reliability! Make sure all jubilee clips and renaults own clips are tight as leaks can cause problems. Also be on the lookout for loose fan belt or leaking water pump. Relays such as the radiator fan relay are prone to water ingress and failure. Basically a little maintenance will prevent major problems. Enjoy your ownership. |

Subject: Heated carb ? Question: On the standard GT watercooling system pipes go to the carb base and into the inlet manifold (I think) - is this to reduce the chance of icing in cold conditions so that they warm up quicker ? If so is it possible to do away with these over the summer months to keep the charge entering the engine cooler which I would have thought would help for drag strip starts ? If so can I simply place a tube in place of them to keep the water flowing ? Also - To improve oil cooling could I weld fins onto the engine oil sump to cool the oil when the car is moving due to the heatsink effect of the extra surface area or could this overcool the oil ? cheers wiz ! Answer: The water heating in the carb is indeed to prevent icing and it also helps atomisation of the fuel. You can remove the pipes if you wish but i am not sure if it will help you. You do not need to replace the pipe with anything. Suck it and see!!! Fins may help oil cooling but a seperate thermostatically controlled oil cooler will be better and it won't reduce ground clearance. |

Subject: which fuel is best Question: having read the october 2000 article on lrp fuels,im still not sure whether to try super unleaded,if i do do i have to run the fuel tank dry before filling up and are there any adjustments i should make in trying this, since the changeover,i noticed very quickly that u do lose some power with lrp.i have used redex and done a carb overhaul but didnt notice any improvements,im on 113k so i dont want to bung something else in without any reasurrance, are there any sites that have any more recent surveys or info on fueling?sorry its a bit of a boring question!thanks for the info on the shox, both fronts were knackered, waiting for rebuilds from spax.cheers,tony. Answer: Super unleaded is fine as it is 97 ron octain which is the same as LRP. If in doubt, add a lead substitute ever few tanks. You can just fill up whenever you like, you don't have to drain LRP first. |

Subject: what type Question: Hi wiz, My fives running on standard rims at the moment until i decide which set of 15's to put on. The thing is i want to lower it , but not sure wether to lower it 35mm or go for 50mm. what do you suggest, and will it be ok to drive around untill i buy the new wheels, as i have taken the drive shafts and hubs off to do some work on, and want to know before putting everything back on. And is it really worth getting a strut brace, if so which one and where from? Sorry for the essay.....cheers Answer: If you use 195/45/15 tyres then you can lower it 50mm with no problems. It will handle better and look the mutts nutts! It will be fine with std or 15's. Strut braces are well worth it! Get an alloy one if you like shiny under bonnet or a steel one is cheaper. Solid ones are cheaper than adjustable ones but may need slight elongation of holes to fit correctly. Get it from any strut brace supplier! |

Subject: To much boost Question: G'Day Wiz, Since fitting a gt tuning lobster back carb top my car now runs 17psi on a standard turbo. Could you tell me if there is any way of reducing this to a more reasonable level. cheers, Neal Answer: Try fitting a restrictor in the actuator line. There is one in the std carb top but i expect there is not one now. or Lengthen the turbo actuator arm, every turn is a psi or two. |

Subject: Weight saving Question: Hiya Wiz, me again. With the quest for extra power becoming evermore expensive, I was thinking of the next best way to make my 5 faster. I`ve decided it has to be a bit of weight reduction. Although stripping out everything except the steering wheel and seats is not an option, could I expect anything significant by removing the back half of the interior, inc seats, and any ICE? I don`t like giving lifts anyway! I`m just wondering if I was up against my own car in its previous full trim, whether I`d notice the difference? Or is a full rally style strip the only way to get good gains? Let me know what you think. Thanx Answer: It all depends on how far you want to go. Rear seat weighs in at about 25kg, door panels are negligable. ICE can weigh loads but music is allways good!! If road noise is not a problem for you then try removing the large portion of foam from under the carpets as this is actually quite heavy! Std front seats weigh 14kg's each so what about a set of lightweight kevlar or similar seats. You could also do things like remove spare wheel, remove the rear wiper motor, keep 1/4 tank of fuel, less windscreen washer water etc etc etc (sorry getting silly now!) I know Bruce Hockley's car which has no rear seat, a rear roll cage and normal front seats etc weighs in at about 800kg and DD Autosports car is about 700kg but it is well stripped!!! I have been told that for ever 10kg you save its like having another 1bhp so you will feel some difference, especially on acceleration. Like I said at the start, how far do you want to go?????? |

Subject: running hot!! Question: Is it possible to install a bigger bladed cooling fan? Or fit a manually operated fan in front of the rad, or do you need both because my R5 is running very hot over 3/4 or is there any other solutions?Or could i have a dodgy temp gauge. Answer: Could be the gauge but more likely the rad is blocked. Try flushing it and fit a low temp rad switch and thermostat. |

Subject: anti perc Question: dear wizz could you please tell me where the second anti perc fan sensor is after the turbo heat shield one is it at the base of the carb on the drivers side below the coolant pipes I have a plug here but no wires to it my 5 doesnt appear to have any botched wiring or bits missing does it matter if I only have the one sensor what is the purpose of 2 sensors is it possible to test the sensors the reason I ask is that sometimes the perc fan comes on whilst driving and stays on 4 a while after switcing off is this normal the car starts no probs at all though when hot many thanx Answer: Yes the second sensor is the one on the carb. The wires are twinned from the turbo sensor so may have been removed due to being burnt or broken. It won't make much difference to your car if you refit the wiring as the turbo sensor is usually the one that turns on the perc fan anyway! The perc fan will stay on after the car is switched off to cool the carb and fuel line when it gets heat soak from the engine bay. |
